Abstract:Kinetics of grafting and chain scission reactions, during maleic anhydride (MA) graftization onto polypropylene (PP) using nanoclay-supported peroxide (o-MMT/DCP) in molten state, were assessed through the development of new methodology and the use a combination of characterization techniques and mathematical data manipulation. In order to inhibit radical propagation and recombination, tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) was used as a free radical scavenger. Rheological stability tests revealed a greater efficiency of TEMPO as a reaction inhibitor. According to kinetics data, using o-MMT/DCP, leads to products with MA grafted levels and MW higher than grafting performed in absence of o-MMT, as well as some changes in molecular architecture. Chain scission distribution function (CSDF) showed that during the MA grafting the PP molecular weight reduces by chain scission, the effect occurring preferably at the longer chains and that the presence of o-MMT refrain the level of PP chain scission, probably due to their recombination on the clay surface.
