Abstract:Color centers in silicon carbide have become potentially versatile quantum sensors. Particularly, wide temperature range temperature sensing has been realized in recent years. However, the sensitivity is limited due to the short dephasing time of the color centers. In this work, we realize a high sensitivity silicon carbide divacancy-based thermometer using the thermal Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (TCPMG) method. First, the zero field splitting D of PL6 divacancy as a function of temperature is measured with a linear slope of -99.7 kHz/K. The coherence times of TCPMG pulses linearly increase with the pulse number and the longest coherence time is about 21 us, which is ten times larger than dephasing time. The corresponding temperature sensing sensitivity is 13.4 mK/Hz1/2, which is about 15 times higher than previous results. Finally, we monitor the laboratory temperature variations for 24 hours using the TCMPG pulse. The experiments pave the way for the applications of silicon carbide-based high sensitivity thermometer in the semiconductor industry, biology, and materials sciences.

Abstract:Nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond are attractive as quantum sensors owing to their remarkable optical and spin properties under ambient conditions. Here we experimentally demonstrated a hybrid fiber-based thermometer coupled with nitrogen-vacancy center ensemble and a permanent magnet, where the temperature sensitivity was improved by converting the temperature variation to the magnetic field change based on the thermal-demagnetization of the permanent magnet. We have achieved both large temperature working range (room temperature to 373 K) and millikelvin sensitivity (1.6 mK/sqrt(Hz)), nearly 6-fold improvement compared with conventional technique. This stable and compact hybrid thermometer will enable a wide range of applications for large-area detection and imaging with high temperature sensitivity.

Abstract:Silicon carbide is a promising host material for spin-defect-based quantum sensors owing to its commercial availability and established techniques for electrical and optical microfabricated device integration. The negatively charged silicon vacancy is one of the leading spin defects studied in silicon carbide owing to its near-telecom photoemission, high spin number, and nearly temperature-independent ground-state zero-field splitting. We report the realization of nanotesla shot-noise-limited ensemble magnetometry based on optically detected magnetic resonance with the silicon vacancy in 4H silicon carbide. By coarsely optimizing the anneal parameters and minimizing power broadening, we achieve a sensitivity of 50nT/Hz and a theoretical shot-noise-limited sensitivity of 3.5nT/Hz . This is accomplished without utilizing complex photonic engineering, control protocols, or applying excitation powers greater than a watt. Abstract: Nitrogen-vacancy quantum defects in diamond offer a promising platform for magnetometry because of their remarkable optical and spin properties. In this Letter, we present a high-sensitivity and wide-bandwidth fiber-based quantum magnetometer for practical applications. By coating the diamond surface with silver reflective film, both the fluorescence collection and excitation efficiency are enhanced. Additionally, tracking pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance spectrum allowed a magnetic field sensitivity of $35$ pT$/\sqrt{\rm{Hz}}$ and a bandwidth of $4.1$ KHz. Finally, this magnetometer was successfully applied to map the magnetic field induced by the current-carrying copper-wire mesh. Such a stable and compact magnetometry can provide a powerful tool in many areas of physical, chemical, and biological researches.

Abstract:An atomic magnetometer based on optically detected magnetic resonance is investigated and demonstrated experimentally. We build an 894 nm external cavity diode laser which is frequency locked to the F = 4 -> F' = 3 transition of Cs D-1 line with DAVLL spectroscopy. With the phase-locked loop, the frequency of the rf coils is actively locked to the Larmor frequency and the magnetometer tracks the magnetic field variations in a phase coherent manner. An ultimate sensitivity of 19 fT/Hz(1/2) and an intrinsic sensitivity of 8.6 pT/Hz(1/2) in the magnetic environment which is close to geomagnetic field have been achieved with the spatial resolution smaller than 2 cm.

Abstract:Quantum magnetic sensing technology utilizing diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers exhibits high spatial resolution, sensitivity, and dynamic range. The practical applications of the NV color centers magnetometer are limited by its complex system and large volume. To expand the range of applications, it is necessary to improve the integration level of NV color centers magnetometer while meeting the requirements of high portability and sensitivity. In this article, we designed a portable integrated NV magnetometer and utilized the continuous wave optically detected magnetic resonance (CW-ODMR) method to detect magnetic field. We coupled a micro self-focusing lens with a fiber to create a fiber self-focusing integrated module (FSFI) and bonded a diamond to the other end of the lens. This module was applied to the integrated NV magnetometer. This arrangement ensured uniform intensity of the laser and expanded the irradiation area on the diamond, thereby improving the excitation efficiency of the NV color centers and the number of NV color centers involved in sensing. The magnetometer integrated a microwave antenna module and a fluorescence collection and processing module. The magnetometer was packaged using 3-D printing technology and occupied a volume of 10 cm3. After conducting experimental tests, the sensitivity of the magnetometer was 9.6 nT/Hz1/2, and the photon shot noise limited sensitivity can reach 0.85 nT/Hz1/2. The maximum detection relative error of the dc magnetic field was 0.848%, and the detection bandwidth was 40 Hz. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the ac magnetic field was 28.107 dB within the detectable bandwidth. The integrated NV magnetometer exhibits excellent performance in detecting magnetic fields and offers strong portability. In various fields, including magnetic anomaly localization, battery current detection, and medical diagnosis, it possesses significant potential for application.

Abstract:Room-temperature (RT) two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets hold immense promise for next-generation spintronic devices for information storage and processing. To achieve high-density energy-efficient spintronic devices, it is essential to understand local magnetic properties of RT 2D vdW magnets. In this work, we realize noninvasive in situ magnetic detection in vdW-layered ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2 using divacancy spins quantum sensor in silicon carbide (SiC) at RT. The structural features and magnetic properties of the Fe3GaTe2 are characterized utilizing Raman spectrum, magnetization and magneto-transport measurements. Further detailed analysis of temperature- and magnetic field-dependent optically detected magnetic resonances of the PL6 divacancy near the Fe3GaTe2 reveal that, the Curie temperature (Tc) of Fe3GaTe2 is ~360K, and the magnetization increases with external magnetic fields. Additionally, spin relaxometry technology is employed to probe the magnetic fluctuations of Fe3GaTe2, revealing a peak in the spin relaxation rate around Tc. These experiments give insights into the intriguing local magnetic properties of 2D vdW RT ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2 and pave the way for the application of SiC quantum sensors in noninvasive in situ magnetic detection of related 2D vdW magnets.

Abstract:We uncover the fine structure of a silicon vacancy in isotopically purified silicon carbide (4H-$^{28}$SiC) and find extra terms in the spin Hamiltonian, originated from the trigonal pyramidal symmetry of this spin-3/2 color center. These terms give rise to additional spin transitions, which are otherwise forbidden, and lead to a level anticrossing in an external magnetic field. We observe a sharp variation of the photoluminescence intensity in the vicinity of this level anticrossing, which can be used for a purely all-optical sensing of the magnetic field. We achieve dc magnetic field sensitivity of 87 nT Hz$^{-1/2}$ within a volume of $3 \times 10^{-7}$ mm$^{3}$ at room temperature and demonstrate that this contactless method is robust at high temperatures up to at least 500 K. As our approach does not require application of radiofrequency fields, it is scalable to much larger volumes. For an optimized light-trapping waveguide of 3 mm$^{3}$ the projection noise limit is below 100 fT Hz$^{-1/2}$.

Abstract:Applied Physics Letters, Volume 120, Issue 19, May 2022. Miniaturization is a trend of development toward practical applications for diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers-based sensors. We demonstrate a compact diamond magnetic field sensor device using a standard microfabrication process. A single-crystal-diamond plate is embedded in a cavity formed with stacking of three silicon chips. Thermal compression bonding is implemented at silicon–silicon and diamond–silicon interfaces ensuring mechanical robustness. The specific construction volume for the essential sensor component is about 10 × 10 × 1.5 mm3. By integrating a gradient index lens pigtailed fiber to the sensor device, 532-nm laser light and emitted fluorescence share a common path for excitation and detection. An omega-shaped transmission line for applied microwave power is fabricated directly on the surface of diamond. The integrated sensor device exhibits an optimized sensitivity of 2.03 nT·Hz−1/2 and over twofold enhancement of fluorescence collection efficiency compared to bare diamond. Such a sensor is utilized to measure a magnetic field change caused by switching a household electrical appliance.

Abstract:Study and design of magneto-optically active single point defects in semiconductors are rapidly growing fields due to their potential in quantum bit (qubit) and single photon emitter applications. Detailed understanding of the properties of candidate defects is essential for these applications, and requires the identification of the defects microscopic configuration and electronic structure. In multi-component semiconductors point defects often exhibit several non-equivalent configurations of similar but different characteristics. The most relevant example of such point defect is the divacancy in silicon carbide, where some of the non-equivalent configurations implement room temperature qubits. Here, we identify four different configurations of the divacancy in 4H–SiC via the comparison of experimental measurements and results of first-principle calculations. In order to accomplish this challenging task, we carry out an exhaustive numerical accuracy investigation of zero-phonon line and hyperfine coupling parameter calculations. Based on these results, we discuss the possibility of systematic quantum bit search.

Abstract:Portable quantum sensors are crucial for developing practical quantum sensing and metrology applications. Fiberized nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamonds have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for compact quantum sensors. Nevertheless, due to the difficulty of coherently controlling the ensemble spin and noise suppression in a large volume, it often faces problems such as reduced sensitivity and narrowed bandwidth in integrated lensless applications. Here, we propose a fluorescence signal treatment method for NV spin ensemble manipulation by the exponential fitting of spin polarization processes, instead of integrating the photon emission. This enables spin state readout with a high signal-to-noise ratio and applies to the pulse sensing protocols for large-volume NV spins. Based on this, we further developed a fiberized diamond-based AC magnetometer. With an XY8-N dynamical decoupling pulse sequence, we demonstrated a T-2-limited sensitivity of 8 pT/root Hz and T-1-limited frequency resolution of 90 Hz over a wide frequency band from 100 kHz to 3 MHz. This integrated diamond sensor leverages quantum coherence to achieve enhanced sensitivity in detecting AC magnetic fields, making it suitable for implementation in a compact and portable endoscopic sensor. Abstract:We demonstrated a fiber-integrated diamond-based magnetometer in this paper. In the system, the fluorescence of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamonds deposited on a tapered fiber was coupled to the tapered fiber effectively and detected at the output end of the fiber. By using this scheme, optically detected electron spin resonance spectra were recorded for single NV centers. The results confirmed that such a tapered fiber-nanodiamond system can act as a magnetometer. Featured with excellent portability, convenient fabrication, and potential for further integration, the constructed system has been demonstrated to be a practical magnetometer prototype.

Abstract:Quantum systems can provide outstanding performance in various sensing applications, ranging from bioscience to nanotechnology. Atomic-scale defects in silicon carbide are very attractive in this respect because of the technological advantages of this material and favorable optical and radio frequency spectral ranges to control these defects. We identified several, separately addressable spin-3/2 centers in the same silicon carbide crystal, which are immune to nonaxial strain fluctuations. Some of them are characterized by nearly temperature independent axial crystal fields, making these centers very attractive for vector magnetometry. Contrarily, the zero-field splitting of another center exhibits a giant thermal shift of -1.1 MHz/K at room temperature, which can be used for thermometry applications. We also discuss a synchronized composite clock exploiting spin centers with different thermal response.

Abstract:Over the past decades, spin qubits in silicon carbide (SiC) have emerged as promising platforms for a wide range of quantum technologies. The fluorescence intensity holds significant importance in the performance of quantum photonics, quantum information process, and sensitivity of quantum sensing. In this work, a dual-layer Au/SiO2 dielectric cavity is employed to enhance the fluorescence intensity of a shallow silicon vacancy ensemble in 4H-SiC. Experimental results demonstrate an effective fourfold augmentation in fluorescence counts at saturating laser power, corroborating our theoretical predictions. Based on this, we further investigate the influence of dielectric cavities on the contrast and linewidth of optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). There is a 1.6-fold improvement in magnetic field sensitivity. In spin echo experiments, coherence times remain constant regardless of the thickness of dielectric cavities. These experiments pave the way for broader applications of dielectric cavities in SiC-based quantum technologies.
