Abstract:In order to acquire better understanding of steel pipe scale constructions and how water quality factors influence iron release process,pipe scale samples of 10 to 15 year-old pipes were collected and analyzed with SEM,EDS and XRD.Using indoor pipe reactor simulating stagnation environment,experiments were conducted to study effects of chloride,humic acid and dissolved oxygen on iron release process under different concentrations.Results indicate that pipe scale surface is covered with shell-like layer and filled with loose and porous course inside.Major elements are Fe,O and C,and main substances are Fe3O4,FeOOH and FeCO3.Concentrations of chloride and humic acid both have significant positive correlation with iron release quantity.Iron release caused by chloride is mainly precipitant state with a proportion more than 85.02%,and water turbidity acts the same with iron concentration with maximum value of 45.5.Under conditions with humic acid,the proportion of precipitant iron decreases dramatically with an average value of 20.41% and maximum value of 39.39%.Thus water turbidity change is not significant.Under low initial dissolved oxygen condition,total iron and dissolved iron concentration increases 54.9% and 67.7% compared to normal condition.

Abstract:A new cloud point extraction——flame atomic absorption spectrometric(CPE-FAAS) method has been developed for the determination of trace iron.1-Nitroso-2-naphthol was selected as the complexing agent and Triton X-114 as the surfactant.The influences of pH value,concentrations of surfactant and complexing agent,and equilibrium temperature and time on the cloud point extraction efficiency and sensitivity of the method were investigated.Under optimal conditions,the calibration curve was linear over the concentration range of 1.25-50 μg·L-1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.996 and a detection limit of 0.42 μg·L-1.The enrichment factor for iron was 32.The proposed method was applied satisfactorily in the determination of trace iron in sea water,lake water and tap water.

Abstract:Pipe scale samples were obtained from two pilot‐scale drinking water distribution systems in an eastern city ,and analyzed with SEM ,EDS and XRD .Results indicate that physicochemical characteristics of two pipe scale are similar ;Pipe scale surface is covered with shell‐like layer ;Major elements are Fe ,O and C , and main substances are Fe3 O4 and FeOOH . By pilot study , correlation between oxidation‐reduction potential (ORP) and iron release in stagnant water was investigated in different seasons ,and was compared with iron release correlations of dissolved oxygen (DO ) and turbidity . Results show that although pipe scales characteristics are similar ,changes in water quality during transmission can cause significant differences in iron release .Iron release from the same pipe was various in different seasons . ORP can be an indicator in predicting iron release .When ORP> 200 mV ,iron release is governed and there is no dissolved iron release . When ORP < 200 mV ,iron release severely and dissolved iron can release .ORP correlates iron release better than DO .

Abstract:An on-line detection system, which detected for mu g/L level of iron, combined the automatic concentrate device and o-phenanthroline spectrophotography. The improved method has four innovations: the automatic concentrate device, the airtight structure of storing ammonia, a temperature sensor controlled the action of the rotating and dumping, an electronic balance with magnetic stirring to control the coloration process. The detection limit for iron was 0.717 mu g/L, the sensitivity of the improved method was 0.020. The obtained results by using the improved method were in good agreement with those obtained from graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry.

Abstract:Abstract The iron concentration in natural water of acid sulfate soils is usually determined by complicated methods of SMEWW 3111B:2017 or ISO 6332: 1988 E in the laboratory for acidified water samples at pH ∼2–3. Therefore, the rapid field determination of iron content in natural water is a very useful method because it limits the error and reduces the experimental time for analysis. In this study, we proposed, developed, and tested a rapid colorimetric analysis method based on the chemical reaction of ferric and SCN ions for an iron concentration range of 0–100 mg/L with a linear equation of ΔE = 0.5955x + 2.0909 and high correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9864. The results from 10 water samples by this method were very close to those by flame absorption spectroscopy with a difference of less than 5%. Besides the biggest advantage of rapid site testing, this method also gives quite high accuracy compared to the molecular absorption method of ISO 6332:1988 E. In addition, this new method can quantify Fe3+, Fe2+, and total iron in water, suggesting a very useful and potential method for determining the iron content of natural water from acid sulfate soils.

Abstract:Flames of 4 different kinds and of various compositions were studied for their suitability for atomic absorption spectroscopy for the determination of manganese, iron, cobalt and nickel. The effects of various other factors such as lamp current, slit-width and position of the burner were also investigated. Interference effects of a large number of ions and compounds were studied. Very few ions were found to interfere and means of eliminating the interferences noted are described. As a result of the investigation, sensitive and selective procedures for the determination of manganese, iron, cobalt and nickel are reported. Sensitivities are Mn, 0.01 mg/l; Fe, 0.05 mg/l; Co, 0.03 mg/l and Ni, 0.02 mg/l for 1% absorption.

Abstract:A direct, rapid and sensitive method for the determination of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in water samples by flame absorption spectrometry coupled with flow injection on-line preconcentration with 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-phen) as the complex agent was developed. Various parameters affecting the complex formation and its subsequent adsorption, such as pH of the mixture solution, 1,10-phen concentration, sample flow rate etc. were optimized. A 2.5 X 10(-3) mol/L 1,10-phen in 2.0% ethanol was on-line mixed with aqueous sample solution of iron in 0.1% (volume ratio) hydrochloric acid and flowed through the microcolumn for 30 s. Fe(II) can be extracted as Fe(II)-phen complex in the C-18 microcolumn and determined within 10 s in the nebulizer of FAAS after being eluted by ethanol. Ascorbic acid (0.1 mg/mL) was used for the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). A good precision (RSD = 1.1%, n = 10), high enrichment factor (19) and sample throughput (80 h) with detection limit 3 mu g/L were obtained. The method has been successfully applied on the water sample for Fe(II) and Fe(III) determination with the recovery 94%-105%.

Abstract:This paper describes and compares the results obtained from determination of total iron in abandoned mine drainage (AMD) from selected sites in western Pennsylvania by UV‐visible spectrophotometry (UV‐Vis) and flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS). As our laboratory possesses both methods, the accuracy and precision of iron results by UV‐Vis, using iron (II) chelator 2,4,6‐tripyridyl‐1,3,5‐triazine (TPTZ), and FAAS are of interest in the event of instrument problems with either method. Calibration curves show excellent linearity (R 2≥0.990). The results show good accuracy (complete recovery of spiked iron) and precision (0.5–3.4% RSD by UV‐Vis, 1.5–7.7% RSD by FAAS), indicating both methods are suitable for determination of iron in AMD. This comparison study is presented as a potential approach to teaching students about UV‐Vis and FAAS and their advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract:The concentration of heavy metals in drinking water is an important standard for water quality evaluation and water pipeline corrosion detection. This research reports the development of a new method based on cloud point extraction for the separation, preconcentration, and detection of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and iron (Fe) using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. This method was used because the concentration of metallic trace elements in the samples was lower than the limits of detection (LOD). The experimental LODs for Pb, Cd, and Fe, were 0.01, 0.01, and 0.3 ppm respectively, which were determined based on a significant sensitivity change in the slope of the standard curve. By using both 2,6-diamino-4-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine and 3-amino-7-dimethylamino-2-methylphenazine (Neutral Red) as chelating agents, and Triton X-114 as a surfactant, these metallic elements were enriched in water samples. The preconcentration procedure was optimized by varying the experimental factors such as temperature, equilibrium time, pH, and the concentration of the chelates and surfactant. After optimization, this method allowed the determination of these three trace elements with 20-times lower LODs and yielded recoveries of 99.8, 97.3, and 99.3% for Pb, Cd, and Fe, respectively.
Spectrophotometry for the determination of trace iron in industrial water containing Zn 2+

Abstract:A spectrophotometry method suitable for the determination of trace total iron in industrial water containing Zn2+has been established.In the buffer solution when pH=9.00,murexide is used for masking Zn2+and the reaction of pyrocatechol violet with Fe2+forms a blue complex.Taking the chromagenic system whose Fe2+has been masked by phenanthroline as reference solution,it is found that there is a good linear relationship between the absorbance of 605 nm and Fe2+whose concentration is in the range of 0.02-0.6 mg/L in the sample solution.Meanwhile,the sensitivity of pyrocatechol violet spectrophotometry is about 5 times as much as that of phenanthroline spectrophotometry,detection limit is 0.012 mg/L,standard recovery rates are from 97% to 100%,and relative standard deviation is 1.16%.The results indicate that the method has superior sensitivity,accuracy and reproducibility.

Abstract:Abstract. Determination of transition metals in ambient aerosols is important due to their toxicity to human health. However, the traditional measurement techniques for metal analysis are often costly and require sophisticated instruments. In this study, we developed and verified relatively low-cost liquid spectrophotometric methods for the measurements of iron (Fe) and copper (Cu), the two most abundant transition metals in ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5). For Fe analysis, we utilized a ferrozine-based colorimetric method, which has been frequently used for water-soluble (WS) Fe determination, and further extended this approach for the measurement of total Fe (water-soluble + water-insoluble). In this method, Fe is quantified through the formation of a light-absorbing ferrozine–Fe(II) complex (absorbance at 562 nm). A similar colorimetric method, which forms a bathocuproine–Cu(I) complex absorbing light at 484 nm, was developed and examined for measurement of WS and total Cu. These methods were applied to 24 h integrated filter samples collected in urban Atlanta. Based on PM2.5 ambient aerosols, total and water-soluble Fe and Cu concentrations were in good agreement with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) measurements (slopes 1.0±0.1, r2>0.89). The water-soluble components, operationally defined as those species in the aqueous filter extract that pass through a 0.45 μm filter, were further characterized by ultrafiltration, which showed that roughly 85 % of both the Fe and Cu in the water-soluble fraction was composed of species smaller than nominally 4 nm.

Abstract:A new catalytic kinetic method for the determination of trace iron(Ⅲ) was established based on the catalytic action of iron(Ⅲ) on the oxidative fade reaction between Arsenazo M(AM) and KIO4 in H2SO4 medium.The optimum conditions and the kinetic parameters were investigated.The linear range for the determination of iron(Ⅲ) by the proposed method is 0.00～0.60μg/25mL,the detection limit is 6.1×10-10g/mL.The method has been used for the determination of trace iron(Ⅲ) in the Chinese herbal medicine and food with satisfactory results.

Abstract:It is reported that by the use of the derivative atomic absorption spectrometry, the sensitivity of determination of some of the metal elements (Cu、 Mn、 Fe、 Zn、 Cd、 Pb) can be remarkably improved. The optimum condition for the determination was studied thoroughly. The extents of the raising of sensitivities of the above mentioned elements are found to be 20~50 times higher as compared with the conventional FAAS methods. The limits of detection are also much lower, improved to the extent of 5 to 11 times. This method has been applied to the analysis of water with recoveries in the range of 90.0%~110.0%.

Abstract:With the aid of Varian Cary 50 spectrophotometer,after using 1,10-phenanthrotine spectrophotometers to detect the iron in the watermelon,this research finds out that the wavelength lying 510.9nm,standard curve is linear,and the correlation coefficient is 0.99973.The best conditions of spectrophotometers are simply specified,including acidity,reagent quantity,color time,color temperature,disturbance,etc.The method is simple and rapid.The accuracy and definition of the detecting result is better to meet the need of sample analysis.

Abstract:A reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography method was developed to determine concentrations of iron(II) In Chinese loess, aerosols, rainwater, and seawater. This method was isocratic, rapid, sensitive, and reproducible. Iron(II) form a stable complex ion with the reagent ferrozine, [Fe(FZ)3]2+ in a pH range of 4-10. By measuring the absorbance of [Fe(FZ)3]2+ at 254 nm, iron(II) concentrations wore determined. [Fe(FZ)3]2+ was separated from ferrozine and was detected in 6 min. Reversed-phase C18 solid-phase extraction cartridges, which were used for the sample preparation, concentrated the [Fe(FZ)3]2+ and increased sensitivity of the analysis. A detection limit of 0.1 nM Fe(II) was obtained. Retention time, addition of known amount of standard, and peak area ratios were used for peak identification of [Fe(FZ)3]2+. There was no interference from Fe(III), Ni(II), Co(II), and Cu(I). The recovery of 10(-8)-10(-10) M [Fe(FZ)3]2+ using the preconcentration step was in the range of 92-99%. The Fe(II) concentration in remote marine aerosols has been determined for the first time by using this new method.

Abstract:A sensitive and selective fluorescence quenching method for the determination of Fe2+ with 1,10-phenandwoline was developed. The fluorescence intensity of 1, 10-phenanthroline at lambda(ex) of 266 nm and lambda(em) of 365 nm was constant in the range of pH 4.0 to 10.0 and decreased linearly upon addition of Fe2+ to its solution. This decrease was mainly due to a static quenching effect caused by the formation of a non-fluorescent complex of Fe2+ with 1, 10-phenanthroline. The total amount of iron was determined by using hydroxylamine hydrochloride to reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+. The linear range was from 5.0 x 10(-7) to 2.0 x 10(-5) mol/L with a detection limit of 2.4 x 10(-8) mol/L at 3sigma. The quenching constant of Fe2+ to 1,10-phenanthroline was calculated to be (5.70 +/- 0.05) x 10(4) L/mol at 25 degreesC. Effects of foreign ions on the determination of Fe2+ were investigated. The results of the new method for the determination of iron in tap water and natural water samples were in good agreement with those obtained by graphite atomic absorption spectrometry.

Abstract:A method is described for the flotation and determination of sub-microgram levels of arsenic in water. A sub-microgram amount of arsenic (III, V) in a 500-ml sample of water is coprecipitated with iron (III) hydroxide at pH 8–9. The precipitate is floated with the aid of sodium oleate and small air bubbles, then separated and dissolved in 5 M hydrochloric acid, and finally the arsenic content is determined by generation of arsine using sodium tetrahydroborate (III) as a reductant and atomic-absorption spectrophotometry with a long absorption cell (60 × 1.2 cm i.d.). This separation technique has been successfully applied to the determination of sub-microgram amounts of arsenic (III, V) in natural waters.

Abstract:With a view to the corrosion in acidic fluids of the steel pipelines used in oilfield,a method for the measurement of iron ions by henanthroline spectrophotometry was developed.The interference of acidic additives on the determination of the iron ions and the countermeasure for elimination of the interference were studied.Thus the method to measure the corrosion rate of the steel oil pipe in acidic fluid was established and compared with conventional method.It was found that the average relative deviation of the established method was 3.65%,indicating that it could be feasible to determine the corrosion rate of the steel oil pipe in acidic fluid by means of spectrophotometry.In general,the method had the advantages of simple and fast operation and good accuracy as well,and could be used for continuous determination of the corrosion rate in laboratory and for monitoring of corrosion in field as well.

Abstract:Atomic absorption spectrometry utilizing electrothermal atomization devices has proven to be the best technique available for the analysis of complex alloys for trace elements of metallurgical interest. The determination of lead, bismuth, selenium, tellurium, thallium, and tin was successfully demonstrated by direct atomization from complex, nickel-base alloy chips with commercial atomic absorption furnace equipment. The determination was carried out by first milling metal chips from the bulk sample. The sample was transferred directly to the furnace and atomized immediately with no preatomization heating cycle. A series of cast alloy standards containing the trace elements were prepared by additions to a nickel-base alloy, then subsequently analyzed by established analytical methods. Of the three commercial atomizers studied, the Perkin-Elmer model HGA 2100 proved to be the most suitable for direct determination of the trace elements of interest. The coefficient of variation of absorbance measurements varied from 7% for bismuth which is easily atomized to 25% for tin which is more difficult to atomize.

Abstract:A new method using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy(FAAS) and Microanalysis to determine high content sodium is developed.The developed method involves the choosing of suitable absorption line of sodium,the optimization of testing parameters and the evaluation of the linearity of the method.The linearity is 0~5 mg/L,the detection limit is 0.02 mg/L and the repeatability is 0.5% RSD.By comparing the measured sodium content with its truth value in some known organic and inorganic compounds,the absolute error is less than 0.3%,the relative error is less than 1%,and the recovery is 99.2%~100.6%.
