Abstract:In this reply, I point out that the comment by Cline (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2410.05826" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.05826">arXiv:2410.05826</a>) on my manuscripts (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2407.00954" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2407.00954">arXiv:2407.00954</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2410.03133" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.03133">arXiv:2410.03133</a>) has overlooked the critical fact that the quantum entanglement between the neutrino's mass and other degrees of freedom would destroy the quantum coherence between the mass eigenstates.

Abstract:It has been suggested that the temporal oscillations in the rate of decay of Pr ions reported in the GSI K-capture experiment arise from interference between different values of the momentum of the Pr ions. It is shown here that any such interference cannot contribute to the decay rate of those ions.

Comment on "Neutrino interaction with matter in a noninertial frame"

Abstract:In this comment, we obtain the complete energy levels for Dvornikov's paper, that is, the energy levels dependent on two quantum numbers, namely, the radial quantum number (given by $N$) and the angular quantum number (given by $J_z$). In particular, what motivated us to do this was the fact that the quantized energy levels for particles (fermions or bosons) in polar, cylindrical, or spherical coordinates depend on two quantum numbers: a radial quantum number and an angular quantum number. From this, the following question/doubt arose: Why do the energy levels in Dvornikov's paper only depend on one quantum number? That is, Where did the angular quantum number given by $J_z$ go? So, using Studenikin's paper as a starting point (as well as others in the literature), we write one of the equations from Dvornikov's paper in a matrix form. Next, we use the four-component Dirac spinor and obtain a set/system of four coupled first-order differential equations. From the first two equations with $m\simeq 0$, we obtain a (compact) second-order differential equation for two spinor components. So, solving this equation, we obtain the neutrino energy levels, which explicitly depend on both $N$ and $J_z$. Finally, we note that for $J_z>0$ (positive angular momentum) with $u=+1$ (component $\psi_3$), we obtain exactly the particular energy levels of Dvornikov's paper.

Comment on "A try for dark energy in quantum field theory: The vacuum energy of neutrino field"

Abstract:It was recently suggested (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2410.06604" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.06604">arXiv:2410.06604</a>) that the small value of the dark energy of the universe could be explained in terms of the scale of neutrino masses through a simple quantum field theoretic mechanism. I clarify that the quantity computed is only a threshold correction to the vacuum energy at the low $m_\nu$ scale, and therefore cannot explain the magnitude of the vacuum energy.

Abstract:New physics in the neutrino sector might be necessary to address anomalies between different neutrino oscillation experiments. Intriguingly, it also offers a possible solution to the discrepant cosmological measurements of $H_0$ and $\sigma_8$. We show here that delaying the onset of neutrino free-streaming until close to the epoch of matter-radiation equality can naturally accommodate a larger value for the Hubble constant $H_0=72.3 \pm 1.4$ km/s/Mpc and a lower value of the matter fluctuations $\sigma_8=0.786\pm 0.020$, while not degrading the fit to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) damping tail. We achieve this by introducing neutrino self-interactions in the presence of a non-vanishing sum of neutrino masses. This strongly interacting neutrino cosmology prefers $N_{\rm eff} = 4.02 \pm 0.29$, which has interesting implications for particle model-building and neutrino oscillation anomalies. We show that the absence of the neutrino free-streaming phase shift on the CMB can be compensated by shifting the value of other cosmological parameters, hence providing an important caveat to the detections made in the literature. Due to their impact on the evolution of the gravitational potential at early times, self-interacting neutrinos and their subsequent decoupling leave a rich structure on the matter power spectrum. In particular, we point out the existence of a novel localized feature appearing on scales entering the horizon at the onset of neutrino free-streaming. While the interacting neutrino cosmology provides a better global fit to current cosmological data, we find that traditional Bayesian analyses penalize the model as compared to the standard cosmological. Our analysis shows that it is possible to find radically different cosmological models that nonetheless provide excellent fits to the data, hence providing an impetus to thoroughly explore alternate cosmological scenarios.

Abstract:General arguments in favor of the necessity of a wave packet description of neutrino oscillations are presented, drawing from analogies with other wave phenomena. We present a wave packet description of neutrino oscillations in stationary beams using the density matrix formalism. Recent claims of the necessity of an equal energy of different massive neutrinos are refuted.

Abstract:The oscillations of ultra-relativistic neutrinos are realized by the propagation of assumed zero-mass on-shell neutrinos with the speed of light in vacuum combined with the phase modulation by the small mass term $\exp[-i(m^{2}_{\nu_{k}}/2|\vec{p}|)\tau]$ with a time parameter $\tau$. This picture is realized in the first quantization by the mass expansion and in field theory by the use of $\delta(x^{0}-y^{0}-\tau) \langle 0|T^{\star}\nu_{L k}(x)\overline{\nu_{L k}(y)}|0\rangle$ with the neutrino mass eigenstates $\nu_{L k}$ and a finite positive $\tau$ after the contour integral of the propagating neutrino energies.

Collapse of Neutrino Wave Functions under Penrose Gravitational Reduction

Abstract:Models of spontaneous wave function collapse have been postulated to address the measurement problem in quantum mechanics. Their primary function is to convert coherent quantum superpositions into incoherent ones, with the result that macroscopic objects cannot be placed into widely separated superpositions for observably prolonged times. Many of these processes will also lead to loss of coherence in neutrino oscillations, producing observable signatures in the flavor profile of neutrinos at long travel distances. The majority of studies of neutrino oscillation coherence to date have focused on variants of the continuous state localization model, whereby an effective decoherence strength parameter is used to model the rate of coherence loss with an assumed energy dependence. Another class of collapse models that have been proposed posit connections to the configuration of gravitational field accompanying the mass distribution associated with each wave function that is in the superposition. A particularly interesting and prescriptive model is Penrose's description of gravitational collapse which proposes a decoherence time $\tau$ determined through $E_{g}\tau\sim\hbar$, where $E_{g}$ is a calculable function of the Newtonian gravitational potential. Here we explore application of the Penrose collapse model to neutrino oscillations, reinterpreting previous experimental limits on neutrino decoherence in terms of this model. We identify effects associated with both spatial collapse and momentum diffusion, finding that the latter is ruled out in data from the IceCube South Pole Neutrino Observatory so long as the neutrino wave packet width at production is $\sigma_{\nu,x}\leq2\times10^{-12}$ m.

Abstract:The pattern of neutrino flavor oscillations could be altered by the influence of noisy perturbations such as those arising from a gravitational wave background (GWB). A stochastic process that is consistent with a GWB has been recently reported by the independent analyses of pulsar timing array (PTA) data sets collected over a decadal timescale by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav), the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA), the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA), and the Chinese Pulsar Timing Array (CPTA) collaborations. We investigate the modifications in the neutrino flavor oscillations under the influence of the GWB reported by the PTA collaborations and we discuss how such effects could be potentially revealed in near-future neutrino detectors, possibly helping the discrimination of different models for the GWB below the nHz frequency range.

Abstract:Neutrino flavor oscillations are analyzed in the framework of Quantum Geometry model proposed by Caianiello. In particular, we analyze the consequences of the model for accelerated neutrino particles which experience an effective Schwarzschild geometry modified by the existence of an upper limit on the acceleration, which implies a violation of the equivalence principle. We find a shift of quantum mechanical phase of neutrino oscillations, which depends on the energy of neutrinos as E^3. Implications on atmospheric and solar neutrinos are discussed.

Abstract:In light of the recent BICEP2 B-mode polarization detection, which implies a large inflationary tensor-to-scalar ratio r_{0.05}=0.2^{+0.07}_{-0.05}, we re-examine the evidence for an extra sterile massive neutrino, originally invoked to account for the tension between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature power spectrum and local measurements of the expansion rate H0 and cosmological structure. With only the standard active neutrinos and power-law scalar spectra, this detection is in tension with the upper limit of r<0.11 (95% confidence) from the lack of a corresponding low multipole excess in the temperature anisotropy from gravitational waves. An extra sterile species with the same energy density as is needed to reconcile the CMB data with H0 measurements can also alleviate this new tension. By combining data from the Planck and ACT/SPT temperature spectra, WMAP9 polarization, H_0, baryon acoustic oscillation and local cluster abundance measurements with BICEP2 data, we find the joint evidence for a sterile massive neutrino increases to DeltaNeff=0.98\pm 0.26 for the effective number and ms= 0.52\pm 0.13 eV for the effective mass or 3.8 sigma and 4 sigma evidence respectively. We caution the reader that these results correspond to a joint statistical evidence and, in addition, astrophysical systematic errors in the clusters and H0 measurements, and small-scale CMB data could weaken our conclusions.

I explain why both claims, and therefore a repetition of these claims in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2410.03133" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.03133">arXiv:2410.03133</a>, are incorrect.
