Abstract:The regularity of refinable functions is an important issue in all multiresolution analysis and has a strong impact on applications of wavelets to image processing, geometric and numerical solutions of elliptic partial differential equations. The purpose of this paper is to characterize the regularity of refinable functions with exponentially decaying masks and a dilation matrix whose eigenvalues have the same modulus. The main results of this paper are really extensions of some results in Cohen et al. (1999) [5], Jia (1999) [17] and Lorentz and Oswald (2000) [28].

Abstract:Stanley decompositions are used in invariant theory and the theory of normal forms for dynamical systems to provide a unique way of writing each invariant as a polynomial in the Hilbert basis elements. Since the required Stanley decompositions can be very long, we introduce a more concise notation called a block decomposition, along with three notions of shortness (incompressibility, minimality of Stanley spaces, and minimality of blocks) for block decompositions. We give two algorithms that generate different block decompositions, which we call elementary and gnomon decompositions, and give examples. Soleyman-Jahan's criterion for a Stanley decomposition to come from a prime filtration is reformulated to apply to block decompositions. We simplify his proof, and apply the theorem to show that elementary and gnomon decompositions come from "subprime" filtrations. In a sequel to this paper we will introduce two additional algorithms that generate block decompositions that may not always be subprime, but are always incompressible.

Abstract:We have introduced the Janet's algorithm for the Stanley decomposition of a monomial ideal I in a polynomial ring S = K[x_1,...,x_n] and prove that Janet's algorithm gives the squarefree Stanley decomposition of S/I for a squarefree monomial ideal I. We have also shown that the Janet's algorithm gives a partition of a simplicial complex.

Abstract:Stanley introduces polynomials which help evaluate symmetric group characters and conjectures that the coefficients of the polynomials are positive. Stanley later gives a conjectured combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the polynomials. Here, we prove the conjecture for the terms of highest degree.

Abstract:We generalize Illusie's result to prove the decomposition of the de Rham complex with smooth horizontal coefficients for a semistable S-morphism f : X -> Y which is liftable over Z/p(2)Z. As an application, we prove the Kollar vanishing theorem in positive characteristic for a semistable S - morphism f : X -> Y which is liftable over Z/p(2)Z, where all concerned horizontal divisors are smooth over Y.

Abstract:We present fully formalized proofs of some central theorems from combinatorics. These are Dilworth's decomposition theorem, Mirsky's theorem, Hall's marriage theorem and the Erdős-Szekeres theorem. Dilworth's decomposition theorem is the key result among these. It states that in any finite partially ordered set (poset), the size of a smallest chain cover and a largest antichain are the same. Mirsky's theorem is a dual of Dilworth's decomposition theorem, which states that in any finite poset, the size of a smallest antichain cover and a largest chain are the same. We use Dilworth's theorem in the proofs of Hall's Marriage theorem and the Erdős-Szekeres theorem. The combinatorial objects involved in these theorems are sets and sequences. All the proofs are formalized in the Coq proof assistant. We develop a library of definitions and facts that can be used as a framework for formalizing other theorems on finite posets.

Stanley decompositions of rings of invariants and certain highest weight Harish-Chandra modules

Abstract:The first half of this paper is largely expository, wherein we present a systematic combinatorial approach to the theory of polynomial (semi)invariants and multilinear invariants of several vectors and covectors, for the classical groups. This culminates in a graphical description of graded linear bases. By applying well-known results of lattice path combinatorics to Weyl's fundamental theorems of classical invariant theory, we write down Stanley decompositions and Hilbert-Poincare series in terms of families of non-intersecting lattice paths, enumerated with respect to certain corners. In the second half of the paper, we revisit the (semi)invariants in the first half as a special case of a much broader phenomenon. On one hand, polynomial invariants of a group $H$ can be generalized to modules of covariants, i.e., $H$-equivariant polynomial functions between $H$-modules. On the other hand, from the perspective of Roger Howe's theory of dual pairs, these modules of covariants can be viewed as infinite-dimensional simple $(\mathfrak{g}, K)$-modules. This suggests an expanded program in which our goal is to apply combinatorial techniques involving lattice paths in order to write down Hilbert series for arbitrary unitarizable highest-weight $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules. As a preview of future work in this program, we present examples showing how modules of covariants -- even those which are not Cohen-Macaulay, and therefore which we would not expect to be combinatorially nice -- can be decomposed in terms of lattice paths. We also extend these methods beyond the classical groups.

The Stanley Conjecture Revisited

Abstract:In the seminal work of Stanley, several conjectures were made on the structure of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for the multiplication of Jack symmetric functions. Motivated by recent results of Alexandersson and the present author, we postulate that a certain 'windowing' property holds for all such Jack L-R coefficients. This property provides a vast set of relations between these coefficients and allows for their direct computation in certain novel cases. We demonstrate compatibility between our windowing conjecture and the conjectures of Stanley, with the hope of illuminating the structures within.

Abstract:Geometric methods proposed by Stallings for treating finitely generated subgroups of free groups were successfully used by many authors to solve a wide collection of decision problems for free groups and their subgroups. In the present paper we employ our generalized Stallings' folding method to introduce a procedure, which given a subgroup H of a free product of finite groups reads off its Kurosh decomposition from the subgroup graph of H.

Abstract:Given a module $X$ and a regular cardinal $\kappa$ we study various notions of $(\kappa,\mathrm{Add}(X))$-freeness and $(\kappa,\mathrm{Add}(X))$-separability. Bearing on appropriate set-theoretic assumptions, we construct a non-trivial $\kappa^+$-generated, $(\kappa^+,\mathrm{Add}(X))$-free and $(\kappa^+,\mathrm{Add}(X))$-separable module. Our construction allows $\kappa$ to be singular thus extending \cite[Theorem~4.7]{CortesGuilTorrecillas}. Bearing on similar set-theoretic assumptions, we characterize when every module $X$ has a perfect decomposition. As a subproduct we show that Enoch's conjecture for classes $\mathrm{Add}(X)$ is consistent with ZFC -- a fact first proved by Šaroch \cite{Saroch}.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a polynomial algebra over a field. We study classes of monomial ideals (as for example lexsegment ideals) of $S$ having minimal depth. In particular, Stanley's conjecture holds for these ideals. Also we show that if Stanley's conjecture holds for a square free monomial ideal then it holds for all its trivial modifications.

Abstract:It is proved that, for a left hereditary ring, an arbitrary left module has a representation in the form of the direct sum of a stable left module and indecomposable projective left modules (if and only if an arbitrary left module has a representation in the form of the direct sum of a stable left module and a projective left module) if and only if the ring is left perfect and right coherent. In that case, the above-mentioned representations are unique up to isomorphism; the latter representation is also functorial. The essential ingredient in the proofs of the above-mentioned statements is a certain purely categorical result. These statements, in particular, imply that, for any principal ideal domain that is not a field, the fundamental theorem on finitely generated modules over it can not be generalized to the case of all modules. Moreover, with the aid of the above-mentioned categorical approach, we give a new proof of the Zheng-Xu He's result asserting that any module of a ring has a unique up to isomorphism injective-costable decomposition if and only if the ring is left hereditary and left Noetherian. The above-mentioned statements, in particular, imply that if the category of left modules over a left hereditary ring is Krull-Schmidt, then the ring is left Artinian. Yet another criterion for a ring to be left hereditary, left perfect and right coherent (resp. left hereditary left Noetherian) found in the paper requires that the pair $(Stable$ $modules$, $Projective$ $modules)$ (resp. $(Injective$ $Modules, Costable$ $ Modules)$) of module classes be a pre-torsion theory. This implies that the pair $(Stable$ $modules$, $Projective$ $modules)$ is a torsion theory if and only if the ring is left hereditary and the injective envelope of the ring, viewed as a left module over itself, is projective.

Abstract:Assuming Stanley's P-partitions conjecture holds, the regular Schur labeled skew shape posets are precisely the finite posets P with underlying set such that the P-partition generating function is symmetric and the set of linear extensions of P, denoted , is a left weak Bruhat interval in the symmetric group . We describe the permutations in in terms of reading words of standard Young tableaux when P is a regular Schur labeled skew shape poset, and classify 's up to descent-preserving isomorphism as P ranges over regular Schur labeled skew shape posets. The results obtained are then applied to classify the -Hecke modules associated with regular Schur labeled skew shape posets P up to isomorphism. Then we characterize regular Schur labeled skew shape posets as the finite posets P whose linear extensions form a dual plactic-closed subset of . Using this characterization, we construct distinguished filtrations of with respect to the Schur basis when P is a regular Schur labeled skew shape poset. Further issues concerned with the classification and decomposition of the -Hecke modules are also discussed.

Decomposing Finite $\mathbb{Z}$-Algebras

Abstract:For a finite $\mathbb{Z}$-algebra $R$, i.e., for a ring which is not necessarily associative or unitary, but whose additive group is finitely generated, we construct a decomposition of $R/{\rm Ann}(R)$ into directly indecomposable factors under weak hypotheses. The method is based on constructing and decomposing a ring of scalars $S$, and then lifting the decomposition of $S$ to the bilinear map given by the multiplication of $R$, and finally to $R/{\rm Ann}(R)$. All steps of the construction are given as explicit algorithms and it is shown that the entire procedure has a probabilistic polynomial time complexity in the bit size of the input, except for the possible need to calculate the prime factorization of one integer. In particular, in the case when ${\rm Ann}(R) = 0$, these algorithms compute a direct decomposition of $R$ into directly indecomposable factors.

Filtrations and recursions for Schubert modules

Abstract:Revisiting Kraśkiewicz and Pragacz's construction of Schubert modules, we provide a new proof that their characters are equal to Schubert polynomials. The main innovation is a representation-theoretic interpretation of a recurrence relation for Schubert polynomials recently discovered by Nadeau, Spink, and Tewari. Along the way, we review several related constructions, and show that the Nadeau-Spink-Tewari recursion determines the characters of flagged Schur modules coming from a broader class of translucent diagrams.

Some combinatorial models for reduced expressions in Coxeter groups

Abstract:Stanley's formula for the number of reduced expressions of a permutation regarded as a Coxeter group element raises the question of how to enumerate the reduced expressions of an arbitrary Coxeter group element. We provide a framework for answering this question by constructing combinatorial objects that represent the inversion set and the reduced expressions for an arbitrary Coxeter group element. The framework also provides a formula for the length of an element formed by deleting a generator from a Coxeter group element. Fan and Hagiwara, et al$.$ showed that for certain Coxeter groups, the short-braid avoiding elements characterize those elements that give reduced expressions when any generator is deleted from a reduced expression. We provide a characterization that holds in all Coxeter groups. Lastly, we give applications to the freely braided elements introduced by Green and Losonczy, generalizing some of their results that hold in simply-laced Coxeter groups to the arbitrary Coxeter group setting.
