Abstract:We define nice partitions of the multicomplex associated with a Stanley ideal. As the main result we show that if the monomial ideal I is a CM Stanley ideal, then Ip is a Stanley ideal as well, where Ip is the polarization of I.

Abstract:Polarization is a powerful technique in algebra which provides combinatorial tools to study algebraic invariants of monomial ideals. We study the reverse of this process, depolarization which leads to a family of ideals which share many common features with the original ideal. Given a squarefree monomial ideal, we describe a combinatorial method to obtain all its depolarizations, and we highlight their similar properties such as the graded Betti numbers. We show that even though they have many similar properties, their differences in dimension make them distinguishable in applications in system reliability theory. In particular, we apply polarization and depolarization tools to study the reliability of multistate coherent systems via binary systems and vice versa. We use depolarization as a tool to reduce the dimension and the number of variables in coherent systems.

Abstract:A major open question in the theory of Gorenstein liaison is whether or not every arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^n$ can be G-linked to a complete intersection. Migliore and Nagel showed that, if such a scheme is generically Gorenstein (e.g., reduced), then, after re-embedding so that it is viewed as a subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$, indeed it can be G-linked to a complete intersection. Motivated by this result, we consider techniques for constructing G-links on a scheme from G-links on a closely related reduced scheme. Polarization is a tool for producing a squarefree monomial ideal from an arbitrary monomial ideal. Basic double G-links on squarefree monomial ideals can be induced from vertex decompositions of their Stanley-Reisner complexes. Given a monomial ideal $I$ and a vertex decomposition of the Stanley-Reisner complex of its polarization $\mathcal{P}(I)$, we give conditions that allow for the lifting of an associated basic double G-link of $\mathcal{P}(I)$ to a basic double G-link of $I$ itself. We use the relationship we develop in the process to show that the Stanley-Reisner complexes of polarizations of artinian monomial ideals and of stable Cohen-Macaulay monomial ideals are vertex decomposable, recovering and strengthening the recent result of Fløystad and Mafi that these complexes are shellable. We then introduce and study polarization of a Gröbner basis of an arbitrary homogeneous ideal and give a relationship between geometric vertex decomposition of a polarization and elementary G-biliaison that is analogous to our result on vertex decomposition and basic double G-linkage.

Abstract:Stanley decompositions are used in invariant theory and the theory of normal forms for dynamical systems to provide a unique way of writing each invariant as a polynomial in the Hilbert basis elements. Since the required Stanley decompositions can be very long, we introduce a more concise notation called a block decomposition, along with three notions of shortness (incompressibility, minimality of Stanley spaces, and minimality of blocks) for block decompositions. We give two algorithms that generate different block decompositions, which we call elementary and gnomon decompositions, and give examples. Soleyman-Jahan's criterion for a Stanley decomposition to come from a prime filtration is reformulated to apply to block decompositions. We simplify his proof, and apply the theorem to show that elementary and gnomon decompositions come from "subprime" filtrations. In a sequel to this paper we will introduce two additional algorithms that generate block decompositions that may not always be subprime, but are always incompressible.
Stanley-Reisner Ideals with Pure Resolutions

Abstract:This paper investgates Stanley-Reisner ideals with pure resolutions. We first describe two infinite families of such ideals associated to highly symmetric complexes. We then prove a partial analogue to the first Boij-Söderberg Conjecture for Stanley-Reisner ideals, by detailing an algorithm for constructing Stanley-Reisner ideals with pure Betti diagrams of any given shape, save for an initial shift.

Abstract:Stanley introduces polynomials which help evaluate symmetric group characters and conjectures that the coefficients of the polynomials are positive. Stanley later gives a conjectured combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the polynomials. Here, we prove the conjecture for the terms of highest degree.

Abstract:We have introduced the Janet's algorithm for the Stanley decomposition of a monomial ideal I in a polynomial ring S = K[x_1,...,x_n] and prove that Janet's algorithm gives the squarefree Stanley decomposition of S/I for a squarefree monomial ideal I. We have also shown that the Janet's algorithm gives a partition of a simplicial complex.

Abstract:The first half of this paper is largely expository, wherein we present a systematic combinatorial approach to the theory of polynomial (semi)invariants and multilinear invariants of several vectors and covectors, for the classical groups. This culminates in a graphical description of graded linear bases. By applying well-known results of lattice path combinatorics to Weyl's fundamental theorems of classical invariant theory, we write down Stanley decompositions and Hilbert-Poincare series in terms of families of non-intersecting lattice paths, enumerated with respect to certain corners. In the second half of the paper, we revisit the (semi)invariants in the first half as a special case of a much broader phenomenon. On one hand, polynomial invariants of a group $H$ can be generalized to modules of covariants, i.e., $H$-equivariant polynomial functions between $H$-modules. On the other hand, from the perspective of Roger Howe's theory of dual pairs, these modules of covariants can be viewed as infinite-dimensional simple $(\mathfrak{g}, K)$-modules. This suggests an expanded program in which our goal is to apply combinatorial techniques involving lattice paths in order to write down Hilbert series for arbitrary unitarizable highest-weight $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules. As a preview of future work in this program, we present examples showing how modules of covariants -- even those which are not Cohen-Macaulay, and therefore which we would not expect to be combinatorially nice -- can be decomposed in terms of lattice paths. We also extend these methods beyond the classical groups.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field and $R=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$. Let $\Delta$ be a simplicial complex on $n$ vertices and $I=I_{\Delta}$ be its Stanley-Reisner ideal. In this paper, we show that if $I$ is a matroidal ideal then the following conditions are equivalent: $(i)$ $\Delta$ is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay; $(ii)$ $\Delta$ is shellable; $(iii)$ $\Delta$ is vertex decomposable. Also, if $I$ is a minimally generated by $u_1,\ldots,u_s$ such that $s\leq 3$ or ${\rm supp}(u_i)\cup {\rm supp}(u_j)=\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$ for all $i\neq j$, then $\Delta$ is vertex decomposable. Furthermore, we prove that if $I$ is a monomial ideal of degree $2$ then $I$ is weakly polymatroidal if and only if $I$ has linear quotients if and only if $I$ is vertex splittable.

Abstract:Bipartite determinantal ideals are introduced by Illian and the author as a vast generalization of the classical determinantal ideals intensively studied in commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, representation theory and combinatorics. We introduce a combinatorial model called concurrent vertex maps to describe the Stanley-Reisner complex of the initial ideal of any bipartite determinantal ideal, and study properties and applications of this model including vertex decomposability, shelling orders, formulas of the Hilbert series and $h$-polynomials.

CM Stability and the Generalized Futaki Invariant I

Abstract:Based on the Cayley, Grothendieck, Knudsen Mumford theory of determinants we extend the CM polarization to the Hilbert scheme. We identify the weight of this refined line bundle with the generalized Futaki invariant of Donaldson. We are able to conclude that CM stability implies K-Stability. An application of the Grothendieck Riemann Roch Theorem shows that this refined sheaf is isomorphic to the CM polarization introduced by Tian in 1994 on any closed, simply connected base .

Abstract:For a monomial ideal $I\subset S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$, we show that $\sdepth(S/I)\geq n-g(I)$, where $g(I)$ is the number of the minimal monomial generators of $I$. If $I=vI'$, where $v\in S$ is a monomial, then we see that $\sdepth(S/I)=\sdepth(S/I')$. We prove that if $I$ is a monomial ideal $I\subset S$ minimally generated by three monomials, then $I$ and $S/I$ satisfy the Stanley conjecture. Given a saturated monomial ideal $I\subset K[x_1,x_2,x_3]$ we show that $\sdepth(I)=2$. As a consequence, $\sdepth(I)\geq \sdepth(K[x_1,x_2,x_3]/I)+1$ for any monomial ideal in $I\subset K[x_1,x_2,x_3]$.

Abstract:This is an expository paper. We will discuss various formulations of Futaki invariant and its relation to the CM line bundle. We will discuss their connections to the K-energy. We will also include proof for certain known results which may not have been well presented or less accessible in the literature. We always assume that M is a compact Kahler manifold. By a polarization, we mean a positive line bundle L over M, then we call (M, L) a polarized manifold.

Abstract:A Waring decomposition of a polynomial is an expression of the polynomial as a sum of powers of linear forms, where the number of summands is minimal possible. We prove that any Waring decomposition of a monomial is obtained from a complete intersection ideal, determine the dimension of the set of Waring decompositions, and give the conditions under which the Waring decomposition is unique up to scaling the variables.

Abstract:The paper deals with two notions: polarized partition relations and product of generalized strong sequences. Strong sequences were introduced by Efimov in 1965 as a usefull tool for proving famous theorems in dyadic spaces, i.e. continuous images of Cantor cube. In this paper we introduce the notion of product of generalized strong sequences and give pure combinatorial proof that existence of product of generalized strong sequences is equivalent to polarized partition relations.

Abstract:Given an ideal $I$ we investigate the decompositions of Betti diagrams of the graded family of ideals $\{I^k \}_k$ formed by taking powers of $I$. We prove conjectures of Engström and show that there is a stabilization in the Boij-Söderberg decompositions of $I^k$ for $k>>0$ when $I$ is a homogeneous ideal with generators in a single degree. In particular, the number of terms in the decompositions with positive coefficients remains constant for $k>>0$, the pure diagrams appearing in each decomposition have the same shape, and the coefficients of these diagrams are given by polynomials in $k$. We also show that a similar result holds for decompositions with arbitrary coefficients arising from other chains of pure diagrams.

Abstract:A symmetric chain of ideals is a rule that assigns to each finite set $S$ an ideal $I_S$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{C}[x_i]_{i \in S}$ such that if $\phi \colon S \to T$ is an embedding of finite sets then the induced homomorphism $\phi_*$ maps $I_S$ into $I_T$. Cohen proved a fundamental noetherian result for such chains, which has seen intense interest in recent years due to a wide array of new applications. In this paper, we consider similar chains of ideals, but where finite sets are replaced by more complicated combinatorial objects, such as trees. We give a general criterion for a Cohen-like theorem, and give several specific examples where our criterion holds. We also prove similar results for certain limiting situations, where a permutation group acts on an infinite variable polynomial ring. This connects to topics in model theory, such as Fraïssé limits and oligomorphic groups.
