Abstract:<p>The investigation aimed to assess the feasibility of creating an interdisciplinary training model simulating endodontic, restorative as well as implantologic treatment procedures by using 3D printing technology. A CBCT scan of the mandible of a real patient was initially taken. The generated DICOM‐data were converted to a STL‐file, which was further processed to design spaces for exchangeable replica teeth, a bone segment and an adapter to fix the model in a mannequin's head. After the manufacturing process, the model was evaluated by dental students performing a root canal treatment, the insertion of a glass fibre post and the insertion of an implant. The workflow allowed a simple and cost‐effective way of manufacturing a single model, which is suitable for several training scenarios in the fields of endodontics, prosthodontics and implantology. The model was rated as being comparable to the real patient situation and offers repetitive treatment simulations. The present workflow is a feasible way of using DICOM‐data and 3D printing for an interdisciplinary training model. The dental schools can design models according to their own curriculum and put the focus on a patient centered education.</p>
Evaluation of Dental Students' Skills Acquisition in Endodontics Using a 3D Printed Tooth Model

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this prospective quantitative study was to assess the improvement of skills among pre-clinical dental students who practiced root canal obturation on a 3D-printed tooth model. Methods: Preclinical students at the dental school (n=145) enrolled in the 2-week endodontic rotation course were invited to participate in the study. Four alphabetically distributed intact groups of first-year students were randomly allocated to either the control or the experimental group that obturated canals of a 3D-printed tooth. The plastic model was obtained from a microCT scan and based on an STL data set. The model was an identical replica of a natural mandibular molar that had been instrumented, ready for obturation. The control group did not obturate the tooth model but received identical instruction. Later in the course all students obturated an extracted human mandibular molar tooth. Technical obturation quality was assessed by two blinded evaluators. Radiographs were used to evaluate obturation length and density. Inter-observer reliability of average performance scores was calculated with the intra-class correlation coefficient for both consistency and absolute agreement. Obturation skills of those who practiced with the model were statistically compared to students who did not use the model with the Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: Inter-observer reliability was very high for both consistency and absolute agreement. No significant differences were found in obturation skills between the experimental and control group (P>0.05). Conclusion: Under the condition of this study, dental students' obturation skills did not significantly improve by further practicing obturation using a 3D-printed model.
Implementation of Patient-Individualized 3D-Printed Models in Undergraduate Students' Education for Various Prosthetic Treatments: A Cross-Sectional Survey Study

Abstract:Background: Due to rapid changes in dental practice, digital technologies have become prominent in undergraduate dental education at German universities in recent years. This shift has prompted a re-evaluation of content as well as teaching methods, particularly in courses where students are prepared for patient treatment. Traditional training on standardized models with resin teeth cannot cover the complexity of individual dental arch configuration encountered in patient situations. This study explores the use of 3D printing technology to create individualized models for prosthetic treatment simulations, aiming to evaluate students' feedback towards their experience with this training setting. Methods: First, the study describes the design and fabrication of individualized models with exchangeable teeth based on intraoral scans, mounted on connected plates with distance holders that can be fixed to standard phantom heads. Second, students provided feedback through a questionnaire, assessing various aspects such as the effectiveness of the 3D-printed models compared to traditional frasaco models for preparation exercises. Results: The results indicated that the design of the realized models was feasible for preparation training (question no. 4: 93% positive rating) and showed positive perceptions of the 3D-printed models, with students finding them effective for preparation exercises and beneficial in bridging the gap between simulation and real patient situations (question no. 6: 69% positive rating). Conclusions: The study suggests that 3D printing technology offers a valuable tool in dental education, providing realistic and patient-specific scenarios for students to enhance their skills and readiness for clinical practice. Further improvements in material properties in hand with cost-effective approaches are essential for widespread implementation.
Evaluation of the accuracy of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) generated tooth replicas with application in autotransplantation

Abstract:Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to assess the linear and geometric accuracy of 3-dimensional (3D) printed tooth replicas when compared to the actual tooth. The secondary aims were to compare the accuracy of three different 3D printers and to evaluate dimensional changes of tooth replicas after sterilization. Methods: A sample of 16 teeth were selected from recruited patients. Segmentation was carried out to generate files from the patient's cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data, Tooth replicas were then printed using three printers making use of Polyjet, laser stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP) technology respectively. These replicas, along with the actual tooth, were scanned by an optical scanner. Replicas were sent for sterilization and scanned again. Paired superimposition of the scans was performed. Results: A mean length difference of 0.36 mm and mean geometric (root mean square [RMS]) difference of 0.56 mm was found. Qualitative analysis showed that the replicas were generally larger in size. Repeated ANOVA tests showed that the Polyjet printer had the highest accuracy (p<0.0001). After sterilization, there was an overall mean length difference of 0.10 mm and RMS deviation of 0.02 mm. Conclusion: This study found that there was a significant difference in linear and geometric measurements of the tooth replicas when compared to the actual tooth. This study also provides evidence that the printer which made use of Polyjet technology was able to produce more accurate models than SLA or DLP printers. Printed tooth models demonstrated clinically insignificant changes after heat sterilization. Clinical significance: 3D printed tooth replicas derived from the patient's CBCT data may be used in autotransplantation to increase predictability of the procedure. In order for this novel digital approach to realize its potential, it is critical to address questions as to how accurate the various printing technologies are in fabricating replicas.

Abstract:In this study a 3D printed tooth with adhesive bridge preparation guide was designed and tested for feasibility and evaluated by students. The tooth, printed by a stereolithographic printer, consisted of two differently colored layers with an integrated adhesive bridge preparation. This showed the extent and thickness of the preparation. 42 dental students in the fourth year of their studies were trained in a voluntary course. The printed teeth were evaluated with a questionnaire using German school grades from 1 (best) to 6 (worst). The production of the printed teeth for the adhesive bridge preparation was feasible and inexpensive. Overall, the students rated the teeth as good (Ø1.9 ± 0.2) in the questionnaire and evaluated the teaching method positively in the free text questions. This method supported the students to visualize the target preparation and develop a self-assessment through the ability to control their work directly on their own. The feasibility of this teaching concept was confirmed. It is suitable for teaching of new preparations forms such as adhesive bridges. The color-coded integrated preparation in the printed teeth and the printed tooth model enabled the students to learn the preparation of an adhesive bridge independently.

Abstract:Introduction The acquisition of skills and manual dexterity in aesthetic dentistry in undergraduate teaching requires preclinical practices with simulation that should approximate real clinical situations. Objective We will present a digital procedure for the creation of three‐dimensional (3D) resin models adapted to the practices of the Aesthetic Dentistry course. Material and method Stereolithography or Standard Tesellation Language (STL) files of a real patient were previously obtained with a 3‐shape intraoral scanner. Using the Exocad computer programme for dental prosthesis design, various modifications were made, such as incisor rotation, surface alterations imitating dysplasias or erosions, the creation of diastemas, or even changes in tooth size. The virtual model was printed in resin for use by students. Once the practices were finished, the students and the teachers evaluated the use of the 3D printed models. Results The result is the typodont model, in which seven laboratory sessions took place: 1‐Restoration of conoid tooth morphology, 2‐Cervical abrasion/ erosion restoration, 3‐Direct Composite Veneer, 4‐Aesthetic correction in a tooth with rotation, 5‐Diastem closure, 6‐Occlusal abrasions/ erosion, and 7‐Maryland bridge. 90.48% of the students evaluated the designed 3D model as the best method for laboratory practice compared to other methods, obtaining a general assessment of 8.3 out of 10. Conclusion The method used has provided a reproducible standard analog model for direct aesthetic dental restoration practice, with a good assessment by students and teachers.

Evaluation of 3D-Printed Dog Teeth for Pre-clinical Training of Endodontic Therapy in Veterinary Dentistry

Abstract:Artificial teeth in dental training have become a valuable tool for students to gain hands-on experience in a safe and controlled environment. This training method allows students to practice various dental procedures and develop their skills without putting patients at risk. Artificial teeth can be used to simulate dental conditions, allowing students to gain experience in dealing with various situations and techniques. Although previous studies in human dentistry have demonstrated the feasibility of using 3D-printed teeth for teaching endodontic procedures such as root canal therapy, similar research has yet to be conducted in the veterinary field. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of creating 3D-printed teeth from an adult dog skull and validate their use as an alternative training tool for root canal therapy in this species. For this, cone beam computed tomography images from a medium-sized dog skull were used to replicate its teeth using a digital 3D printing system. Then, artificial mandibular first molar teeth and a 24-question survey were sent to specialized veterinary dentistry practitioners in Brazil to assess their perception of the model's characteristics during endodontic treatment. In conclusion, it was feasible to create 3D-printed models of dog teeth with high accuracy for the endodontic system. Despite the differences in the properties of the two materials between natural and artificial teeth, it was possible to use the artificial tooth as a training device for conventional endodontic treatment in dogs. The reliability level for the survey was reported as good, displaying a reliability coefficient above 0.86.
Accuracy of 3-dimensional printed dental models reconstructed from digital intraoral impressions

Abstract:Introduction: A rapidly advancing digital technology in orthodontics is 3-dimensional (3D) modeling and printing, prompting a transition from a more traditional clinical workflow toward an almost exclusively digital format. There is limited literature on the accuracy of the 3D printed dental models. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of 2 types of 3D printing techniques. Methods: Digital and alginate impressions of the oral environment were collected from 30 patients. Subsequently, digital impressions were used to print 3D models using digital light processing (DLP) and polyjet printing techniques, and alginate impressions were poured up in stone. Measurements for the 3 model types (digital, DLP, and polyjet) were compared with the stone models. Tooth measurements (first molar to first molar) included mesiodistal (crown width) and incisal/occlusal-gingival (crown height). Arch measurements included arch depth and intercanine and intermolar widths. Intraobserver reliability of the repeated measurement error was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients. Results: The intraclass correlation coefficients were high for all recorded measurements, indicating that all measurements on all model types were highly reproducible. There were high degrees of agreement between all sets of models and all measurements, with the exception of the crown height measurements between the stone and DLP models, where the mean difference was statistically significant. Conclusions: Both the DLP and polyjet printers produced clinically acceptable models and should be considered viable options for clinical application.
Evaluation of a new 3D-printed tooth model allowing preoperative ICDAS assessment and caries removal

Abstract:Introduction: Teaching caries lesion management with operative care requires tooth models with highly realistic anatomical detail and caries lesions that can be assessed using ICDAS. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a new 3D-printed teeth model for ICDAS assessment and caries removal for pre-clinical hands-on education. Methods: Printable tooth with different layers for enamel, dentin and carious lesions was designed and tested by 31 dental students. They were asked to visually and radiologically assess the ICDAS severity of the simulated carious lesions, establish the therapeutic strategy according to CariesCare 4D, and perform a qualitative assessment of the models based on five-point Likert scale items. Results: Concerning carious lesions, the texture was realistic, and the shade was adequate for 94% and 97% of the participants. Ninety per cent of the participants found the model adequate to perform an ICDAS visual assessment. Seventy-four per cent of the students found the hardness adequate. Concerning the difference in shade and the noticeable hardness difference between enamel and dentin, participants have mixed agreement with a proportion of 61% and 55%, respectively. All the participants agreed these 3D-printed models provide a good caries simulation, are suitable for hands-on operative dentistry courses, and that learning outcomes better than the standard model. Conclusion: The present work shows that rapid prototyping paves the way for customized educational models capable of supporting operative but also preoperative skills. 3D printing opens up new opportunities by reducing the gap between pre-clinical training and clinical reality in caries management, which can positively impact the quality of patient care.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, Ahead of Print. A three-dimensional (3D) printing has been contributing enormously across areas of dentistry including treatment planning, prosthesis designing, dental restorations, and surgical procedures. A successful dentistry treatment with minute analysis can be done more effectively, using 3D printing as compared to conventional fabrication methods. In this article, four different 3D printing techniques namely PolyJet, fused deposition modelling (FDM), selective laser sintering (SLS), and stereolithography (SLA) were used to reproduce dental models of five subjects as references. Critical dimensions of these 3D printed dental models including crown height and width were then compared with Standard Tessellation Language (STL) digital image files. Average relative errors for SLA, SLS, PolyJet, and FDM printed models with their respective STL files were calculated as 0.3%, 0.4%, 0.8%, and 1.7%, respectively, for crown height and 0.2%, 0.4%, 1.0%, and 2.0% for crown width in the same order, indicating a relative error trend as SLA < SLS < PolyJet < FDM in ascending order. Raw material cost for 3D printing a single dental model used in FDM ( 3.63), SLA ( 7.84). Time consumed for 3D printing the same model was highest for SLA (180 min) in comparison to FDM (120 min), PolyJet (55 min), and SLS (40 min). Therefore, a combination of factors such as dimensional accuracy, time consumption, and cost-effectiveness essential in manufacturing have been considered to suggest the most suitable 3D printing technique in the field of dentistry for treatment planning, prosthesis designing, dental restorations, and surgical procedures.

Abstract:Background: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of 3D printed teeth and virtual simulation system on the pre-clinical access cavity preparation training of senior dental undergraduates. Methods: The 3D printed teeth were manufactured based on the micro-CT data of an extracted lower first molar. Ninety-eight senior dental undergraduate students were required to finish the access cavity preparation of lower first molar within 20 min on plastic and 3D printed teeth on the manikin system as well as on a virtual simulation machine respectively with randomly selected sequences. Expert dentists scored the operated teeth. The scores from the virtual simulation system were also recorded. All the scores were analyzed and compared. Following the procedure, two questionnaires were sent to students to further evaluate the feelings and optimal training sequence. Results: No significant differences were found between plastic and 3D printed teeth scores, while virtual simulation achieved a valid/invalid area removal ratio of 96.86% ± 5.08% and 3.97% ± 1.85%, respectively. Most students found plastic teeth training the easiest and favored the three-training combination (36.36%). 71.42% of the students thought the virtual simulation training should be put at the first place of the three trainings. Over 80% of students agreed with incorporating 3D printed teeth and virtual simulation into their routine training courses. In addition, the general advantages and disadvantages of the virtual simulation system and 3D printed teeth training received almost equal recognition by students. Conclusions: Virtual simulation system training + plastic teeth training + 3D printed teeth training might be the optimal training sequence. Virtual simulation system training could not completely replace the traditional training methods on the manikin system at the moment. With further modifications, 3D printed teeth could be expected to replace the plastic teeth for the pre-clinical access cavity preparation training.
Comparative Micro-CT Analysis of Minimally Invasive Endodontic Systems Using 3D-Printed Replicas and Natural Teeth

Abstract:(1) Background: This study aimed to compare the shaping abilities of modern minimally invasive endodontic systems using natural teeth and 3D-printed resin replicas. These replicas offer a standardized approach for studying root canal preparation while eliminating the variability and scarcity of natural teeth. (2) Methods: Eleven mandibular molars with Vertucci class IV anatomy and their 3D-printed replicas (n = 132 canals) were scanned using micro-CT before and after preparation with six rotary systems. Shaping abilities were assessed by comparing volume, surface area, and unprepared areas between natural teeth and their 3D replicas, focusing on the apical third. Statistical analysis included the Shapiro–Wilk test to assess data normality and ANOVA and t-tests to compare different endodontic systems. (3) Results: Both qualitative and quantitative analyses revealed high similarity between natural teeth and 3D replicas. No significant differences in volume or surface area were found except in the apical third, where 3D replicas showed slightly larger increases in volume. (4) Conclusions: 3D resin replicas closely mimic natural teeth and provide a practical tool for assessing the shaping abilities of endodontic systems. This study demonstrates that 3D-printed models are suitable for endodontic research, offering a standardized and accessible alternative to natural teeth.

New scenarios for training in oral radiology: clinical performance and predoctoral students' perception of 3D-printed mannequins

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of 3D-printed mannequins on the training of predoctoral students. Methods: Two 3D-printed training models were developed: a traditional model that simulates a sound adult patient and a customized model with pathological and physiological changes (impacted third molar and edentulous region). Students accomplished their pre-clinical training divided into a control group (CG, n = 23), which had access to the traditional model, and a test group (TG, n = 20), which had access to both models. Afterward, they performed a full mouth series on patients and filled out a perception questionnaire. Radiographs were evaluated for technical parameters. Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney test were used to compare the groups. Results: Students provided positive feedback regarding the use of 3D printing. The TG reported a more realistic training experience than the CG (P = .037). Both groups demonstrated good clinical performance (CG = 7.41; TG = 7.52), and no significant differences were observed between them. Conclusions: 3D printing is an option for producing simulators for pre-clinical training in Oral Radiology, reducing student stress and increasing confidence during clinical care.
A Method to Evaluate the Trueness of Reconstructed Dental Models Made with Photo-Curing 3D Printing Technologies

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To establish a reference dental model used for trueness evaluation of photo-curing 3D printing technologies, and to establish a multidimensional trueness evaluation method based on the reference dental model, which can yield a comprehensive objective evaluating result.METHODS:A reference dental model was designed in 3ds Max 2018 software based on the statistical analysis results of dental crown and dental arch of Chinese population in previous studies in order to simulate a real dental model. This model was made up of several simple geometrical configurations, which could minimize the manual measurement error. Physical models were fabricated using three types of photo-curing three-dimensional printers using different techniques: Objet30 Pro (PJ), Projet 3510 HD Plus (MJP), and Perfactory DDP (DLP). The models were scanned by a laser-scanning device and the files were exported in a stereolithography file format. In Geomagic Studio 2012, 3D shape deviations (including overall 3D deviation, flatness error, parallelism error and perpendicularity error) were measured by several commands using the data obtained from the scanning. With regard to the feature size of the simulated dental crown and dental arch, linear measurements (including mesiodistal diameter, buccolingual diameter, crown height of each simulated dental crown and feature size of dental arch) were recorded for selected landmarks using a digital caliper. The measurement results of feature sizes were used to analyze the occlusal plane percentage error and the occlusogingival direction percentage error.RESULTS:For the 3D shape deviation, the results showed that the printed model made by the Objet30 Pro had the lowest overall 3D deviation, the model made by Projet 3510 HD Plus had the best perpendicularity accuracy and the model made by Perfactory DDP had the best flatness accuracy. In terms of the accuracy of the feature size, the model made by the Objet30 Pro was the most accurate in consideration of the results of the occlusal plane percentage error and the occlusogingival direction percentage error.CONCLUSION:The reference dental model and the trueness evaluation method using this model is universally applicable in evaluating the trueness of photo-curing three-dimensional printed dental model and can provide a comprehensive objective evaluating result, which can serve as a reference for the clinical use of photo-curing 3D printing technology.
Trueness of five different 3D printing systems including budget- and professional-grade printers: An In vitro study

Abstract:Problem: Several types of 3D printers with different techniques and prices are available on the market. However, results in the literature are inconsistent, and there is no comprehensive agreement on the accuracy of 3D printers of different price categories for dental applications. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the accuracy of five different 3D printing systems, including a comparison of budget- and higher-end 3D printing systems, according to a standardized production and evaluation protocol. Material and methods: A maxillary reference model with prepared teeth was created using 16 half-ball markers with a diameter of 1 mm to facilitate measurements. A reference file was fabricated using five different 3D printers. The printed models were scanned and superimposed onto the original standard tesselation language (.stl) file, and digital measurements were performed to assess the 3-dimensional and linear deviations between the reference and test models. Results: After examining the entire surface of the models, we found that 3D printers using Fused filament fabrication (FFF) technology -120.2 (20.3) μm create models with high trueness but high distortion. Distortions along the z-axis were found to be the highest with the stereolithography (SLA)-type 3D printer at -153.7 (38.7) μm. For the 4-unit FPD, we found 201.9 (41.8) μm deviation with the digital light processing (DLP) printer. The largest deviation (-265.1 (55.4) μm) between the second molars was observed for the DLP printer. Between the incisor and the second molar, the best results were produced by the FFF printer with -30.5 (76.7) μm. Conclusion: Budget-friendly 3D printers are comparable to professional-grade printers in terms of precision. In general, the cost of a printing system is not a reliable indicator of its level of accuracy.
Spatial Trueness Evaluation of 3D-Printed Dental Model Made of Photopolymer Resin: Use of Special Structurized Dental Model

Abstract:(1) Background: Various 3D printers are available for dental practice; however, a comprehensive accuracy evaluation method to effectively guide practitioners is lacking. This in vitro study aimed to propose an optimized method to evaluate the spatial trueness of a 3D-printed dental model made of photopolymer resin based on a special structurized dental model, and provide the preliminary evaluation results of six 3D printers. (2) Methods: A structurized dental model comprising several geometrical configurations was designed based on dental crown and arch measurement data reported in previous studies. Ninety-six feature sizes can be directly measured on this original model with minimized manual measurement errors. Six types of photo-curing 3D printers, including Objet30 Pro using the Polyjet technique, Projet 3510 HD Plus using the Multijet technique, Perfactory DDP and DLP 800d using the DLP technique, Form2 and Form3 using the SLA technique, and each printer's respective 3D-printable dental model materials, were used to fabricate one set of physical models each. Regarding the feature sizes of the simulated dental crowns and dental arches, linear measurements were recorded. The scanned digital models were compared with the design data, and 3D form errors (including overall 3D deviation; flatness, parallelism, and perpendicularity errors) were measured. (3) Results: The lowest overall 3D deviation, flatness, parallelism, and perpendicularity errors were noted for the models printed using the Objet30 Pro (overall value: 45 μm), Form3 (0.061 ± 0.019 mm), Objet30 Pro (0.138 ± 0.068°), and Projet 3510 HD Plus (0.095 ± 0.070°), respectively. In color difference maps, different deformation patterns were observed in the printed models. The feature size proved most accurate for the Objet30 Pro fabricated models (occlusal plane error: 0.02 ± 0.36%, occlusogingival direction error: −0.06 ± 0.09%). (4) Conclusions: The authors investigated a novel evaluation approach for the spatial trueness of a 3D-printed dental model made of photopolymer resin based on a structurized dental model. This method can objectively and comprehensively evaluate the spatial trueness of 3D-printed dental models and has a good repeatability and generalizability.

Novel method for augmented reality guided endodontics: An in vitro study

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy in endodontics of a novel augmented reality (AR) method for guided access cavity preparation in 3D-printed jaws. Methods: Two operators with different levels of experience in endodontics performed pre-planned virtually guided access cavities through a novel markerless AR system on three sets of 3D-printed jaw models (Objet Connex 350, Stratasys) mounted on a phantom. After the treatment, a post-operative high-resolution CBCT scan (NewTom VGI Evo, Cefla) was taken for each model and registered to the pre-operative model. All the access cavities were then digitally reconstructed by filling the cavity area using 3D medical software (3-Matic 15.0, materialize). For the anterior teeth and the premolars, the deviation at the coronal and apical entry points as well as the angular deviation of the access cavity were compared to the virtual plan. For the molars, the deviation at the coronal entry point was compared to the virtual plan. Additionally, the surface area of all access cavities at the entry point was measured and compared to the virtual plan. Descriptive statistics for each parameter were performed. A 95% confidence interval was calculated. Results: A total of 90 access cavities were drilled up to a depth of 4 mm inside the tooth. The mean deviation in the frontal teeth and in the premolars at the entry point was 0.51 mm and 0.77 mm at the apical point, with a mean angular deviation of 8.5° and a mean surface overlap of 57%. The mean deviation for the molars at the entry point was 0.63 mm, with a mean surface overlap of 82%. Conclusion: The use of AR as a digital guide for endodontic access cavity drilling on different teeth showed promising results and might have potential for clinical use. However, further development and research might be needed before in vivo validation.
3D Printed Temporary Veneer Restoring Autotransplanted Teeth in Children: Design and Concept Validation Ex Vivo

Abstract:(1) Background: Three-dimensional printing is progressing rapidly and is applied in many fields of dentistry. Tooth autotransplantation offers a viable biological approach to tooth replacement in children and adolescents. Restoring or reshaping the transplanted tooth to the anterior maxilla should be done as soon as possible for psychological and aesthetic reasons. However, to avoid interfering with the natural healing process, reshaping of transplanted teeth is usually delayed three to four months after transplantation. This delay creates a need for simple indirect temporary aesthetic restoration for autotransplanted teeth. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a digital solution for temporary restoration of autotransplanted teeth using 3D printing. (2) Methods: Four dry human skulls and four dry human mandibles were scanned using cone beam computed tomography to create 3D models for 15 premolars. Digital impression of the maxillary arch of one of the skulls was captured by intra oral scanner. The digital work flow for the design and fabrication of temporary veneers is presented. The seating and adaptation of the 3D printed veneers were evaluated using stereomicroscopy and micro-computed tomography. (3) Results: Evaluation of the veneer seating using stereomicroscopy showed that the mean marginal gap at all of the sides was below the cut-off value of 200 µm. The overall mean marginal gap was 99.9 ± 50.7 µm (median: 87.8 (IQR 64.2⁻133 µm)). The internal adaptation evaluation using micro-computed tomography showed an average median gap thickness of 152.5 ± 47.7 (IQR 129⁻149.3 µm). (4) Conclusions: The present concept of using temporary veneers that are designed and fabricated with CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology using a DLP (digital light processing) printer may present a viable treatment option for restoration of autotransplanted teeth.
Evaluation of the Shaping Ability of Three Thermally Treated Nickel-Titanium Endodontic Instruments on Standardized 3D-printed Dental Replicas Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

Abstract:Background and Objectives: The aim of the present study is to compare the efficacy of three root canal preparation systems in the shaping of 3D-printed root canal replicas of single rooted teeth. Materials and Methods: Sixty 3D-printed root canal replicas were produced and divided into three groups, each consisting of twenty samples. Each group was shaped with a different instrument: Reciproc Blue R25/08 (VDW GmbH, Munich, Gemany), WaveOne Gold Primary 25/07 (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), and ProTaper Gold F2 25/08 (Denstply Sirona). To ensure the reproducibility of pre- and post-operative CBCT images of the root canals, the endodontic printed replicas were placed in a mould of silicon impression material. A cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) software was used to compare pre- and post-instrumentation images collected at three levels of the root canal length: 3, 6, and 9 mm from the apical foramen. The amount of transportation, centring ability, and curvature angle after shaping were evaluated for each system. The results were statistically analysed and compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Regarding the transportation of the root canal after shaping, significant differences between groups at 3 mm (p = 0.010721) and 6 mm (p = 0.000046) were recorded in the mesio-distal direction, while in the bucco-lingual significant differences were only observed at 6 mm (p = 0.000554). Reciproc Blue removed more dentin from the mesial and buccal wall of the root canal. When evaluating the centring ability of the three systems, significant differences were observed between the groups at the level of 9 mm (p = 0.037258) in the mesio-distal direction, and at the level of 6 mm (p = 0.038197) in the bucco-lingual direction. Significant differences of the canal curvature angle after shaping were also observed between groups (p = 0.000001). Reciproc Blue straightened the curvature the most, while ProTaper Gold the least. Conclusions: All systems produced minor root canal transportation. No instrument was able to achieve a perfect centring preparation of the root canal. All systems produced a small degree of root canal straightening.

Abstract:Background: The study's objective was to assess the accuracy (trueness and precision) of orthodontic models obtained from crowded and spaced dentition finalized for the production of clear aligners. Four 3D printers featuring different technologies and market segments were used for this purpose. Methods: Two digital master models were obtained from two patients featuring respectively crowded dentition (CM group) and diastema/edentulous spaces (DEM group). The 3D printers tested were: Form 3B (SLA technology, medium-professional segment), Vector 3SP (SLA technology, industrial segment), Asiga Pro 4K65 (DLP technology, high-professional segment), and Anycubic Photon M3 (LCD technology, entry-level segment). Each 3D printed model was scanned and superimposed onto the reference master model and digital deviation analysis was performed to assess the trueness and precision calculated as root mean square (RMS). All data were statistically examined to obtain intra-group and inter-groups comparisons(p 0.05). Results: In both CM and DEM groups, SLA 3D printers (Vector 3SP and Form 3B) showed lower trueness error compared to DLP/LCD technologies (Asiga Pro 4K65, Anycubic Photon M3) (p < 0.001). In general, the entry-level printer (Anycubic Photon M3) showed the greatest trueness error (p < 0.001). Comparing CM and DEM models generated with the same 3D printer, statistically significant differences were found only for Asiga Pro 4k65 and Anycubic Photon M3 printers (p > 0.05). Concerning data of precision, the DLP technology (Asiga Pro 4k65) showed lower error compared to the other 3D printers tested. The trueness and precision errors were within the accepted clinical error for clear aligner manufacturing (< 0.25 mm), with the entry-level 3D printer nearly reaching this value. Conclusions: The accuracy of orthodontic models generated for clear aligners can be affected by different 3D printer technologies and anatomical characteristics of dental arches.
