Abstract:<p>The investigation aimed to assess the feasibility of creating an interdisciplinary training model simulating endodontic, restorative as well as implantologic treatment procedures by using 3D printing technology. A CBCT scan of the mandible of a real patient was initially taken. The generated DICOM‐data were converted to a STL‐file, which was further processed to design spaces for exchangeable replica teeth, a bone segment and an adapter to fix the model in a mannequin's head. After the manufacturing process, the model was evaluated by dental students performing a root canal treatment, the insertion of a glass fibre post and the insertion of an implant. The workflow allowed a simple and cost‐effective way of manufacturing a single model, which is suitable for several training scenarios in the fields of endodontics, prosthodontics and implantology. The model was rated as being comparable to the real patient situation and offers repetitive treatment simulations. The present workflow is a feasible way of using DICOM‐data and 3D printing for an interdisciplinary training model. The dental schools can design models according to their own curriculum and put the focus on a patient centered education.</p>

Abstract:Introduction The acquisition of skills and manual dexterity in aesthetic dentistry in undergraduate teaching requires preclinical practices with simulation that should approximate real clinical situations. Objective We will present a digital procedure for the creation of three‐dimensional (3D) resin models adapted to the practices of the Aesthetic Dentistry course. Material and method Stereolithography or Standard Tesellation Language (STL) files of a real patient were previously obtained with a 3‐shape intraoral scanner. Using the Exocad computer programme for dental prosthesis design, various modifications were made, such as incisor rotation, surface alterations imitating dysplasias or erosions, the creation of diastemas, or even changes in tooth size. The virtual model was printed in resin for use by students. Once the practices were finished, the students and the teachers evaluated the use of the 3D printed models. Results The result is the typodont model, in which seven laboratory sessions took place: 1‐Restoration of conoid tooth morphology, 2‐Cervical abrasion/ erosion restoration, 3‐Direct Composite Veneer, 4‐Aesthetic correction in a tooth with rotation, 5‐Diastem closure, 6‐Occlusal abrasions/ erosion, and 7‐Maryland bridge. 90.48% of the students evaluated the designed 3D model as the best method for laboratory practice compared to other methods, obtaining a general assessment of 8.3 out of 10. Conclusion The method used has provided a reproducible standard analog model for direct aesthetic dental restoration practice, with a good assessment by students and teachers.

Preclinical motor chunking and fine motor skill learning in fixed prosthodontics: Contribution of 3D printing and satisfaction of dental students

Abstract:Introduction: In fixed prosthodontics, simulators are essential to students for a progressive transition from preclinical to clinical condition. With the 3D printing technology, we developed resin bars allowing students to better visualise by motor chunking technique. Main objectives of this work were to describe this teaching methodology used in preclinic among different promotions of second, third and fourth dental years and to evaluate students' feedback. Materials and methods: Two hundred seventy resin strips were digitally designed and printed in resin. All participants from second, third and fourth had to fulfil a User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) after the preclinical work. The scales of this questionnaire covered the complete impression of the user experience. Both classical aspects of usability (efficiency, insight and reliability) and aspects of user experience (originality, stimulation) were measured. Results: For the second dental years, 'Attractiveness', 'Stimulation' and 'Novelty' were considered 'Excellent'. For the third dental year, novelty average was considered as 'Excellent'. For the fourth dental year, 'novelty' was considered as 'Good'. Discussion: The resin plates used in this study are original and stimulating for the students, especially for the second-year dental students who found the exercises useful for their learning. This method can also be used by creating scenarios close to the clinical situations encountered in dentistry departments (more dilapidated teeth, preparation of inlays, post and core, etc.). This 3D printed simulation model is not intended to replace the Frasaco® models but is a complement to the learning process.
New scenarios for training in oral radiology: clinical performance and predoctoral students' perception of 3D-printed mannequins

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of 3D-printed mannequins on the training of predoctoral students. Methods: Two 3D-printed training models were developed: a traditional model that simulates a sound adult patient and a customized model with pathological and physiological changes (impacted third molar and edentulous region). Students accomplished their pre-clinical training divided into a control group (CG, n = 23), which had access to the traditional model, and a test group (TG, n = 20), which had access to both models. Afterward, they performed a full mouth series on patients and filled out a perception questionnaire. Radiographs were evaluated for technical parameters. Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney test were used to compare the groups. Results: Students provided positive feedback regarding the use of 3D printing. The TG reported a more realistic training experience than the CG (P = .037). Both groups demonstrated good clinical performance (CG = 7.41; TG = 7.52), and no significant differences were observed between them. Conclusions: 3D printing is an option for producing simulators for pre-clinical training in Oral Radiology, reducing student stress and increasing confidence during clinical care.

Abstract:We have generated 1202.8-Å radiation, one-half the frequency of the1s^{1} S_{o}-2s^{1}S_{o}forbidden transition in He, using resonantly enhanced four-wave optical mixing in Hg vapor. Peak powers of 300 W in a ∼ 15-ps pulse have been achieved using a tunable narrow-band source consisting of a parametrically amplified commercial dye laser. The dependence of the conversion efficiency on the spectral properties of this source is described. Hg is shown to be negatively dispersive for this process, and thus phase matchable.

Evaluation of Dental Students' Skills Acquisition in Endodontics Using a 3D Printed Tooth Model

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this prospective quantitative study was to assess the improvement of skills among pre-clinical dental students who practiced root canal obturation on a 3D-printed tooth model. Methods: Preclinical students at the dental school (n=145) enrolled in the 2-week endodontic rotation course were invited to participate in the study. Four alphabetically distributed intact groups of first-year students were randomly allocated to either the control or the experimental group that obturated canals of a 3D-printed tooth. The plastic model was obtained from a microCT scan and based on an STL data set. The model was an identical replica of a natural mandibular molar that had been instrumented, ready for obturation. The control group did not obturate the tooth model but received identical instruction. Later in the course all students obturated an extracted human mandibular molar tooth. Technical obturation quality was assessed by two blinded evaluators. Radiographs were used to evaluate obturation length and density. Inter-observer reliability of average performance scores was calculated with the intra-class correlation coefficient for both consistency and absolute agreement. Obturation skills of those who practiced with the model were statistically compared to students who did not use the model with the Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: Inter-observer reliability was very high for both consistency and absolute agreement. No significant differences were found in obturation skills between the experimental and control group (P>0.05). Conclusion: Under the condition of this study, dental students' obturation skills did not significantly improve by further practicing obturation using a 3D-printed model.
Undergraduate dental students’ perspective on the implementation of digital dentistry in the preclinical curriculum: a questionnaire survey

Abstract:Abstract Background Digitalisation is an expanding field in dentistry and implementation of digital teaching methods in dental education is an essential part of modern education. Therefore, two digital training modules were implemented in the preclinical curriculum at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. The aim of this study was to assess the students’ perspective on the implementation with a questionnaire survey. Methods Since the fall term 2017/18, students of the course of dental prosthodontics I attended the training module I, where they learned to use computer-aided learning (CAL) approaches for the digital analysis of tooth preparations. In training module II, students of the course of dental prosthodontics II learned how to manufacture a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing restoration. After the completion of the training modules, all students starting with the fall term 2017/18 to the spring term 2019 were asked to fill in a questionnaire regarding the aspects of handling, didactic benefit, motivation, and overall assessment. Results Students rated the implementation of digital aspects in teaching as positive in terms of handling, didactic benefit, and motivation, but gave preference to the assessment of the tooth preparations by dental instructors. In addition, students assessed the feedback from the faculty regarding tips and tricks better than the digital feedback. More than 90% of the students indicated that they could imagine using an intraoral scanner for treatment of patients in the dental office in future. Conclusions The results of the present study revealed a positive perspective of students on the implementation of digital dentistry in the preclinical curriculum. However, difficulties with CAL systems were reported and most students preferred evaluation of preparation by dental instructors. Thus, CAL approaches offer an additional teaching method besides the traditional teaching of manual skills.

Abstract:3D printed models are becoming increasingly popular in healthcare as visual and tactile tools to enhance understanding of anatomy and pathology in medical trainee education, provide procedural simulation training, and guide surgical procedures. Patient-specific 3D models are currently being used preoperatively for trainee medical education in planning surgical approaches and intraoperatively to guide decision-making in several specialties. Our study group utilized a modified Delphi process to create a standardized assessment for trainees using patient-specific 3D models as a tool in medical education during pre-surgical planning.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Clinically, apical barrier procedure can be adopted to create an immediate artificial barrier for tooth with an open apex. Given that the quality of the barrier is crucial, the apical barrier procedure is known for its high technical sensitivity, posing significant learning challenges for dental students. Therefore, a new dental teaching model not only effectively enhances the future clinical skills of dental students but also benefits a wider range of patients. OBJECTIVE: A new dental model for simulating apical barrier procedure in vitro, is helpful for dental students to practice apical barrier procedure. This study aims to design, assess, and evaluate the feasibility of a three-dimensional (3D) printed apical barrier model for pre-clinical dental education. METHODS: A novel 3D-printed apical barrier model was developed, consisting of a tooth model and a matching blind box. Total 200 3D-printed apical barrier models were used to train dental students, and fifty fifth-year dental students participated in this voluntary hands-on course. Each student performed apical barrier procedures on four 3D-printed models. The outcome of the first model served as the representative result for the "direct barrier group", whereas the outcome of the fourth model represented the result of the "post-training barrier group". The quality of the apical barrier procedure was assessed through X-ray examination, and a questionnaire was used to evaluate the 3D-printed model's benefits, with scores ranging from 1 (strongly agree) to 5 (strongly disagree). RESULTS: The overall rating for the 3D-printed model was 2.0 ± 0.6. The model was noted for its high degree of realism, ease of use, and practical applicability. Post-training assessments showed significant improvements in the density of apical barrier fillings (P< 0.05), reduction in underfilling rates (P< 0.05), and decrease in overfilling distances (P< 0.05). Students overwhelmingly agreed that the model was beneficial for training in apical barrier procedures (1.06 ± 0.24), helped identify their shortcomings (1.62 ± 0.53), and improved their operational skills (1.90 ± 0.51). CONCLUSIONS: Both the questionnaire feedback and the quality of the fillings confirmed the feasibility and efficacy of the 3D-printed apical barrier model for dental education. The students had the possibility to learn the correct apical barrier procedure on printed dental models.

Abstract:In this study a 3D printed tooth with adhesive bridge preparation guide was designed and tested for feasibility and evaluated by students. The tooth, printed by a stereolithographic printer, consisted of two differently colored layers with an integrated adhesive bridge preparation. This showed the extent and thickness of the preparation. 42 dental students in the fourth year of their studies were trained in a voluntary course. The printed teeth were evaluated with a questionnaire using German school grades from 1 (best) to 6 (worst). The production of the printed teeth for the adhesive bridge preparation was feasible and inexpensive. Overall, the students rated the teeth as good (Ø1.9 ± 0.2) in the questionnaire and evaluated the teaching method positively in the free text questions. This method supported the students to visualize the target preparation and develop a self-assessment through the ability to control their work directly on their own. The feasibility of this teaching concept was confirmed. It is suitable for teaching of new preparations forms such as adhesive bridges. The color-coded integrated preparation in the printed teeth and the printed tooth model enabled the students to learn the preparation of an adhesive bridge independently.

Abstract:Purpose/objectives Treating intraosseous lesions (IOLs) and interradicular bone lesions (IRLs) is an extremely technical dental procedure in periodontics. Instrumentation of these lesions is often perceived as difficult by students and inexperienced dentists before they perform a certain number of procedures on patients in the clinic. The aim of this article is to evaluate a cost‐effective three‐dimensional (3D)‐printed educational simulator for the periodontal treatment of IOLs/IRLs (including scaling, incisions and sutures). Methods The simulators were first developed digitally, and then manufactured using printable resins and specific materials; finally, they were assembled using different bonding systems. To evaluate the simulators, assessments were gathered from two target populations: undergraduate students and periodontics experts. These individuals tested the simulator and completed a cross‐sectional questionnaire based on a Likert scale with comparative and pedagogical items scored from one to five. The purpose of the questionnaire was to compare our simulator to clinical reality (i.e., operation on human jaws) and to an animal simulator (i.e., simulation of porcine jaws). The results are expressed as the mean and standard deviation and were statistically analyzed with the Wilcoxon signed‐rank test. Results Overall, the results were satisfactory for both groups of testers (4.70 and 4.61 out of five for students and experts, respectively, for global satisfaction). Conclusions The overall educational relevance of the simulator designed herein highlights the fact that 3D‐printed educational simulators could enable efficient cognitive‐functional learning for clinical IOL/IRL treatment.

Abstract:Introduction This study, conducted within an Educational Design Research (EDR) framework, assessed the use of customized 3D-printed tooth models at various difficulty levels to enhance mastery learning and deliberate practice in preclinical endodontic training. Methods The EDR was conducted in a preclinical endodontic training involving 42 third-year students. The study focused on developing and evaluating 3D-printed tooth models customized into three difficulty levels to facilitate mastery learning for the access opening procedure on upper anterior teeth. To promote deliberate practice, we ensured ample availability of these models. The evaluation combined quantitative analysis, using Friedman and Wilcoxon Signed-Rank tests to assess practice volume and performance, with qualitative feedback from interviews and focus groups, analyzed via content analysis. Results There was a significant reduction in practice time across the different model levels, with students using an average of 1.5 to 1.8 models per level. No significant differences in performance scores were observed across levels and natural tooth ( P = .333). Feedback highlighted the models' educational value in enhancing dental training, indicating their effectiveness in improving learning experiences and skill development in endodontic education. Conclusions The innovative design of a 3D-printed tooth model system, which features three levels of difficulty and was developed within an EDR framework, allowed for tailored learning progressions and ample practice opportunities. This significantly enhanced the endodontic training experience and skill development by providing varied and realistic challenges.

Effect of 3D printed teeth and virtual simulation system on the pre-clinical access cavity preparation training of senior dental undergraduates

Abstract:Background: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of 3D printed teeth and virtual simulation system on the pre-clinical access cavity preparation training of senior dental undergraduates. Methods: The 3D printed teeth were manufactured based on the micro-CT data of an extracted lower first molar. Ninety-eight senior dental undergraduate students were required to finish the access cavity preparation of lower first molar within 20 min on plastic and 3D printed teeth on the manikin system as well as on a virtual simulation machine respectively with randomly selected sequences. Expert dentists scored the operated teeth. The scores from the virtual simulation system were also recorded. All the scores were analyzed and compared. Following the procedure, two questionnaires were sent to students to further evaluate the feelings and optimal training sequence. Results: No significant differences were found between plastic and 3D printed teeth scores, while virtual simulation achieved a valid/invalid area removal ratio of 96.86% ± 5.08% and 3.97% ± 1.85%, respectively. Most students found plastic teeth training the easiest and favored the three-training combination (36.36%). 71.42% of the students thought the virtual simulation training should be put at the first place of the three trainings. Over 80% of students agreed with incorporating 3D printed teeth and virtual simulation into their routine training courses. In addition, the general advantages and disadvantages of the virtual simulation system and 3D printed teeth training received almost equal recognition by students. Conclusions: Virtual simulation system training + plastic teeth training + 3D printed teeth training might be the optimal training sequence. Virtual simulation system training could not completely replace the traditional training methods on the manikin system at the moment. With further modifications, 3D printed teeth could be expected to replace the plastic teeth for the pre-clinical access cavity preparation training.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, Ahead of Print. A three-dimensional (3D) printing has been contributing enormously across areas of dentistry including treatment planning, prosthesis designing, dental restorations, and surgical procedures. A successful dentistry treatment with minute analysis can be done more effectively, using 3D printing as compared to conventional fabrication methods. In this article, four different 3D printing techniques namely PolyJet, fused deposition modelling (FDM), selective laser sintering (SLS), and stereolithography (SLA) were used to reproduce dental models of five subjects as references. Critical dimensions of these 3D printed dental models including crown height and width were then compared with Standard Tessellation Language (STL) digital image files. Average relative errors for SLA, SLS, PolyJet, and FDM printed models with their respective STL files were calculated as 0.3%, 0.4%, 0.8%, and 1.7%, respectively, for crown height and 0.2%, 0.4%, 1.0%, and 2.0% for crown width in the same order, indicating a relative error trend as SLA < SLS < PolyJet < FDM in ascending order. Raw material cost for 3D printing a single dental model used in FDM ( 3.63), SLA ( 7.84). Time consumed for 3D printing the same model was highest for SLA (180 min) in comparison to FDM (120 min), PolyJet (55 min), and SLS (40 min). Therefore, a combination of factors such as dimensional accuracy, time consumption, and cost-effectiveness essential in manufacturing have been considered to suggest the most suitable 3D printing technique in the field of dentistry for treatment planning, prosthesis designing, dental restorations, and surgical procedures.

Abstract:Introduction Three‐dimensional (3D)‐printing technology can provide customizable simulations, but its effects on patient care quality have not been well studied. This study aimed to assess the impact of practicing with patient‐specific 3D‐printed teeth models on the quality of patients' dental preparations performed by students transitioning to clinical training. Accordingly, the quality of posterior crown preparations was evaluated by objectively analyzing digital scans and grades in two groups: the study group, which practiced beforehand with patient‐specific 3D‐printed teeth models, and the control group, which did not practice with these models. Methods All 78 fourth‐year dental students who had just finished their fixed prosthodontics course at the simulation laboratory with training on phantom heads and without previous clinical experience in crown preparations were invited to participate in the study. Sixty‐eight agreed to take part and were randomly divided into a study group that practiced crown preparations on 3D‐printed models of their own patient's teeth and a control group that did not practice with 3D‐printed models and started their clinical work straightforwardly after simulation training. Students completed validated perception questionnaires on self‐confidence and clinical skills before and after the protocol, which were compared using a chi‐squared test. Crown preparations performed on 3D‐printed models and then on patients were digitally scanned and objectively graded by prepCheck software for critical parameters, such as undercuts, taper, and occlusion reduction. Non‐parametric tests were used to compare preparations on 3D‐printed models and on patients performed by the study group and those on patients made by the control group. Results Initially, both groups reported similar perceptions of self‐confidence and clinical skills levels. The study group significantly improved both aspects after the protocol. Analysis of the scanned preparations demonstrated that the study group removed less tooth structure from actual patients than from the initial 3D‐printed models. In contrast, the control group showed excess occlusal clearance in their patients compared to the study group. Conclusions Practicing patient‐specific 3D‐printed teeth before performing procedures clinically appears to enhance preparation quality and minimize unnecessary tooth reduction in early clinical experiences.

Abstract:Purpose/objectives The aim of this study is to evaluate students' perceptions of the reinforcement of knowledge via innovative, case‐based, hands‐on learning regarding indirect prosthetic material choice. Methods Six different clinical cases that represented common prosthetics were used in this simulation training. In each case, clinical pictures were associated with three‐dimensional (3D)‐printed replicates of final restorations and PolyJet polychromatic models with the goal of enabling students to deliberate and exchange ideas in small groups. After a debriefing session regarding the therapeutic potentialities of the first three cases alongside teachers, a lecture concerning prosthetic material choices was provided, and a zirconia crown was stained by each student to enable them to obtain a better understanding of the dental technician profession. Finally, the latter three cases were studied and analyzed in the same manner. The students' perceived reinforcement of knowledge was recorded before and 1 month after the hands‐on simulation training experience, and their satisfaction was evaluated immediately thereafter on Likert scales. Students' perceived reinforcement of knowledge was subjected to statistical evaluation. Results A high level of overall satisfaction was observed (4.60). All of the items pertaining to students' satisfaction received scores >3. Abstract:Background: 3D printing is a rapidly developing technology in the healthcare industry and in dentistry. Its application clearly shows that this area of digital dentistry has potential for everyday usage across all fields, including prosthodontics, orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery, and oral implantology. However, despite gaining ground, there is a lack of information about how specialists (dentists and dental technicians) use additive technology. Our research group aimed to investigate the impact of social media on additive manufacturing technology among dental specialists and their everyday usage of 3D printing. Methods: This paper investigated specialists’ everyday usage of 3D printers via an online survey (Google Forms). The survey questions aimed to discover the number of 3D printers used, the accessibility of the devices, the annual cost, and the design programs. Since specialists tend to build online communities on social media, we circulated our study questionnaire using our profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram platforms during our research. Results: A total of 120 responses were received from 20 countries, with the most significant numbers being from Hungary 23.7% (n = 27), the United States 18.4% (n = 21), and the United Kingdom 7.9% (n = 9). Most of the participants were dentists (n = 68) or dental technicians (n = 29), but some CAD/CAM specialists (n = 23) also completed our survey. The participants had an average of 3.8 years (±0.7) of experience in the 3D printing field, and owned a total of 405 printing devices (3.6 on average/person). Conclusions: The impact of social media on this research field is growing increasingly. Hence, we support specialists in joining virtual communities on professional platforms. This article intended to provide a practical overview, feedback, and direction for dentists interested in 3D printing technology. From our survey, we can conclude that additive technology is broadening dental applications and the services that we can provide for our patients.
