Abstract:Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of AZ80 Mg alloy during annular channel angular extrusion (350 °C) and heat treatment with varying parameters were investigated, respectively. The results showed that dynamic recrystallization of Mg grains was developed and the dendritic eutectic β-Mg17Al12 phases formed during the solidification were broken into small β-phase particles after hot extrusion. Moreover, a weak texture with two dominant peaks formed owing to the significant grain refinement and the enhanced activation of pyramidal slip at relative high temperature. The tension tests showed that both the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the extruded alloy were dramatically improved owing to the joint strengthening effect of fine grain and β-phase particles as compared with the homogenized sample. The solution treatment achieved the good plasticity of the alloy resulting from the dissolution of β-phases and the development of more equiaxed grains, while the direct-aging process led to poor alloy elongation as a result of residual eutectic β-phases. After solution and aging treatment, simultaneous bonding strength and plasticity of the alloy were achieved, as a consequence of dissolution of coarse eutectic β-phases and heterogeneous precipitation of a large quantity of newly formed β-phases with both the morphologies of continuous and discontinuous precipitates.

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of pre-ageing treatment on the mechanical properties, microstructure, and fracture behavior of the extruded Mg-9.5Gd-4Y-2.2Zn-0.5Zr (wt%) alloys was studied. The results show that the poor mechanical properties of the solution-extruded (SE) sample with a bimodal microstructure are attributed to the deformation incompatibility between different regions (deformed grain region, fine grain region and bulk-shaped long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases), which is prone to crack initiation and propagation. In contrast, pre-aged sample with various morphological phases (lamellar-shaped LPSO phases, granular-shaped β phases and bulk-shaped LPSO phases) promotes the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) by the particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) mechanism during extrusion, which results in the pre-aged-extruded (PE) sample having a more homogeneous microstructure with a finer and higher percentage of dynamically recrystallized grains. The densely distributed fine precipitates in the dynamically recrystallized region and homogeneous microstructure can enhance the capacity of the different regions to accommodate strain, and avoid premature fracture of the alloy without sufficient work hardening. Therefore, the PE sample has excellent strength-ductility synergy, and its yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (EL) were 408 MPa, 476 MPa and 8.3%, respectively. The YS and UTS of the PE sample after further ageing treatment (PEA sample) increased to 461 MPa and 535 MPa, respectively.

Abstract:In this work, novel turned-bearing extrusions (TBE) conducted by using the dies with the single corner and double corner, named SC-TBE and DC-TBE respectively, are developed to introduce additional shear strain during the preparation of AZ31 alloy sheets, which is expected to improve the strengths of sheets. Numerical simulations are conducted to uncover the effect of additional shear deformation on the microstructure during the TBE. The results show that the high strain during the TBE leads to a high nucleation rate for dynamic recrystallization (DRX), resulting in grain refinement of the extruded Mg alloy sheet. However, the high strain also increases the temperature of the material due to the heat generated by plastic deformation, which provides a great driving force for grain growth and consumes dislocations. As these two effects compete with each other when increasing the strain near the die orifice, the SC-TBE sheet has finer grains and a higher residual dislocation density compared to the DC-TBE sheet or the sheet prepared by the conventional extrusion (CE). Fine-grain strengthening and substructure strengthening work together and enhance the tensile yield strength (TYS) of the SC-TBE sheet. The TYSs along extrusion direction (ED), transverse direction (TD) and 45° direction (the half angle between ED and TD) of the SC-TBE sheet are improved by 32 MPa, 65 MPa and 35 MPa respectively compared with the CE sheet. The findings of this research provide some new insights into the development of new preparation methods for Mg alloy sheets with higher strength.

Abstract:The influence of pre-aging treatment on the microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of the Mg–6Zn–1Gd–1Er (wt.%) alloy was investigated. The microstructure analysis shows that the presence of pre-aging is beneficial to <math>{101¯2}</math> twin nucleation at the early stage of extrusion and inhibits the growth of twins and promotes the formation of <math>[101¯0]</math>-fiber texture components, thus accelerating the complex process of recrystallization. In the middle stage of extrusion, the extruded samples under the condition of solid solution were subjected to dynamic precipitation during severe shear deformation. The precipitation of the second phase particles followed the particle stimulating nucleation (PSN) mechanism, which increased the volume fraction of DRX grains during extrusion. In the extruded samples under the peak-aged condition, the particles appear dissolved during the severe shear deformation strain, which slows down the DRX process. In the later stage of extrusion, the small rod-shaped particles followed the PSN mechanism, and finally formed the strong fiber texture. The extruded alloy exhibits the strongest mechanical properties under the peak-aged state, with ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 346 MPa, tensile yield strength (TYS) of 217 MPa, and elongation to failure (EL) of 13.6%. The improvement of mechanical properties is mainly attributed to the existence of strong fiber texture, small rod-shaped and block-shaped phases.

Abstract:Mg–1Mn–0.5Al–0.5Ca–0.5Zn (wt.%) alloy was fabricated by conventional extrusion at 673 K with an extrusion ratio of 25:1, followed by aging at 473 K. The microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The mechanical properties were determined by the tensile test. The peak-aged sample shows fine recrystallized grains with an average grain size of 1.7 μm. Area fraction of Al–Ca particles in the alloy increases significantly after peak aging. Meanwhile, both 〈a〉 and 〈c+a〉 dislocations were observed to remain in the alloy after hot extrusion. Thus, the peak-aged sample exhibits simultaneously high strength and good ductility with the ultimate tensile stress, tensile yield stress, and tension fracture elongation of 320 MPa, 314 MPa, and 19.0%, respectively.

Abstract:The combination of carefully designed aging, cold-rolling and electropulsing treatment (EPT) was proposed to improve the strength and ductility of AZ91 alloy strip. Prior to cold-rolling, the extruded strip was aged in order to precipitate dispersed beta-Mg17Al12 particles in the alpha-Mg matrix for improving the strength of the alloy. When EPT was applied to the cold-rolled strips, EPT rapidly completed the recrystallization of alpha-Mg matrix within several seconds at relatively low temperature of 508-553 K, and the pre-existed beta-Mg17Al12 particles effectively impeded the alpha-Mg grain growth. The microstructure consisting of fine recrystallized grains and dispersed beta-Mg17Al12 particles was obtained. The ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation to failure of the EPT-samples were 362-370 MPa, 270 MPa and 27.6-28.4%, which were improved by 11-12%, 10% and 70-75%, respectively compared with those of the original extruded-strip. The mechanism of EPT improved the mechanical properties of the AZ91 alloy is discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The microstructure revolution and mechanical properties of as-extruded and peak-aged Mg–6Zn–1Mn– 4Sn–0.5Ca (ZMT614–0.5Ca) alloy were studied by OM, SEM, TEM, hardness testing and tensile testing. The results showed that the as-cast ZMT614–0.5Ca alloy mainly consisted of α-Mg, Mg–Zn and CaMgSn phase. The hot extrusion process effectively refined the microstructure and led to a completely dynamic recrystallized microstructure. The average grain size of as-extruded alloy was ˜4.85 μm. After solution treatment, remained CaMgSn with high melting point played a significant role in pinning effect and impeding the migration of grain boundary. After aging treatment, peak-aged ZMT614–0.5Ca alloy exhibited a good combination of strength and ductility, with yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation being 338 MPa, 383 MPa and 7.5%, respectively. The yield strength of the alloy increased significantly by around 36% compared with that in as-extruded condition, which should be attributed to the precipitation strengthening of β' phase.

Abstract:Repetitive upsetting-extrusion (RUE) is known as a processing method that effectively improves the properties of a billet without changing its initial shape. In this paper, one pass RUE with reduced deformation temperature (re-upsetting at 360 °C and secondary extrusion at 340 °C) and different extrusion speeds (0.5 and 1 mm/s) is implemented to improve the strength and toughness of AZ80 Mg rods, and simultaneous reduction in tensile anisotropy is achieved. Influences of one pass RUE method on the resulting microstructure and texture evolution of the alloy are investigated alongside their correlated impact on its mechanical properties. After RUE processing, the grain structure of AZ80 alloy is characterized by numerous fine dynamic recrystallized (DRXed) grains, combined with large unDRXed grains obtained at high extrusion speed or coarse DRXed grain bands obtained at low extrusion speed. Besides, β-Mg17Al12 particles dynamically precipitated during deformation, acting as strong barrier against grain boundary migration through pinning effect. Through introduction of an interactive stress state, the RUE process promotes dispersion of the fiber texture that typically develops during the extrusion process. The key factor that promotes weakening of the fiber texture is derived from the refinement of basal orientated deformed grains, which form during upsetting deformation, into numerous non-basal orientated DRXed grains during early-stage extrusion. Compared with coarse deformed grains, these fine DRXed grains delay transformation of texture into the typical [10-10]–[11-20] fiber component. Grain refinement is implicated as the most significant factor with respect to simultaneous improvement of strength and toughness in the extruded rods, while tensile yield anisotropy in response to loading along the ED and TD is attributed to unDRXed grains with [10-10] fiber orientation. Compared to the as-cast state, extruded rods demonstrate increases in yield strength, ultimate tension strength, and elongation maximally up to ~2.6, ~2.2, and ~4.9 times, respectively. And when complete DRX structure is nearly achieved, the tensile yield anisotropy of extruded bar is effectively eliminated because the refined grains with relatively dispersed orientation inhibit the nucleation of tension twin and simultaneous enhance the Hall-Petch effect.

Abstract:Ultrahigh-strength Mg-9.2Gd-4.4Y-1.0Zn-0.8Mn (wt%) alloys were produced through isothermal ageing at 200 °C applied to pre-ageing-extruded bars. The remarkable thermal stability exhibited by the β and LPSO phases ensures that the recrystallization state of α-Mg grains and the morphology and distribution of secondary phases in peak-aged alloys resemble those observed in the as-extruded alloys at the micron scale. The microstructure of peak-aged alloys is characterized by bimodal α-Mg grains with a pronounced fibrous texture, with the major strengthening phases consisting of prismatic β' and basal γ' phases precipitated during ageing. Through solid-solution and pre-ageing treatments, the extruded alloy at peak age demonstrated the highest tensile strength, with an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 555 MPa, a tensile yield strength (TYS) of 488 MPa, and an elongation of 5.8%. The considerable enhancement in tensile strength with satisfactory ductility in peak-aged alloys can be attributed to dense number distribution co-precipitation, which increases both basal and non-basal critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS) and inhibits microcrack nucleation and propagation. These findings have significant implications for the advancement of high-strength Mg-Gd-Y-Zn alloys with improved mechanical properties and performance in practical applications.

Abstract:The Mg-Al series alloys are well known for their low density, high specific strength, and superior damping capability. However, the application of Mg-Al series alloys is often limited by inadequate mechanical properties. To fulfill the growing demand for lightweight structural components, ultrafine grained magnesium alloys with superior mechanical properties have gained attention. Mechanical milling and powder metallurgy were used to produce the AZ61 ultra-fine grained magnesium alloy with super-high tensile characteristics. The effects of mechanical milling on the grain size, precipitates, texture, and tensile properties of AZ61 ultra-fine grained magnesium alloy were investigated. The grain size of the AZ61 alloy produced by mechanical milling and powder metallurgy was reduced from 0.91 mu m to 0.68 mu m when compared to that produced by non-mechanical milling. Mechanical milling accelerated the dynamic precipitation and refining of Mg 17Al 12 while weakening the basal texture. The yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation of AZ61 ultra-fine grained magnesium alloy are 393.1 MPa, 431.9 MPa, and 8.5%, respectively, which are superior to the AZ61 alloy produced by other processes. The theoretical grain refinement and Orowan strengthening mechanisms of AZ61 alloy were calculated, and it shows that the grain refinement strengthening contributes more than 90% of the yield strength. The Orowan strengthening was overestimated when Mg 17Al 12 was distributed at grain boundaries. The weakening of basal texture resulted in a reduction in yield strength. The fracture mechanism of the AZ61 alloy without mechanical milling is dominated by oxidation on the surface of the AZ61 powder, which initiates interparticle debonding. The fracture mechanism of the AZ61 alloy with mechanical milling is dominated by deformation mismatch between the deboned powders and the stronger bonded powders, and the increase in the amount of Mg 17Al 12 along the grain boundary.
Study on the Microstructure and Properties of AZ31 Alloy by Hot Die Forging Extrusion

Abstract:Mg-3.18Al-1.00Zn-0.06Mn(wt.%) (AZ31) alloy was fabricated through a combination of hot die forging at 300celcius and extrusion processes (HFE). Results demonstrate that the HFE process can accelerate dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and refine grains effectively while weakening the basal texture intensity. The highly uniform fine grain structure of the HFE sample was attributed to hot die forging treatment prior to extrusion, which facilitates the nucleation of recrystallization and improves the microstructure. After 60 s of hot die forging, the HFE sample exhibited promising mechanical properties. In particular, yield asymmetry ratio (sigma CYS/sigma TYS) improved significantly by 30%. This work provides a new research strategy for obtaining Mg alloys with high economic benefit and satisfactory comprehensive performance.

Abstract:To overcome the trade-off between strength and ductility, a low-cost method comprising room-temperature compression followed by artificial aging and compressive deformation was applied to a commercial AZ61 alloy. The goal of this work was to regulate the microstructure rather than refine the grains. For this purpose, fragmented precipitates decorating the boundaries of narrow twins and stable networks developed by two non-basal slip systems were achieved. With this novel microstructure, a highly improved yield strength of almost 120 MPa was realized with slightly decreased ductility. It is believed that this provides a novel orientation for rationally designing strength and ductility in age-hardenable Mg alloys by tailoring the precipitate scale and dislocation configuration.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Conventional methods for hot extrusion of magnesium (Mg) alloy sheets have limitations for microstructure improvement and mechanical property enhancement. Co-extrusion of Mg alloy with an Al alloy core provides an opportunity for refining the grain size and improving basal texture. This study introduces a novel severe plastic deformation (SPD) method, Direct Extrusion-Continuous Shear (DE-CS), utilizing 6063 Al alloy as the core to fabricate innovative Mg/Al clad composite sheets. Monolithic Mg sheets (non-co-extruded condition) are extruded under identical conditions for comparison. By evaluating the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ31 Mg alloy under co-extrusion and non-co-extrusion conditions, the positive effect of Mg-Al composite billet co-extrusion on AZ31 Mg alloy is established. The grain refinement effect in co-extruded samples is superior, enhancing plasticity without significant reduction in tensile strength. The microstructure evolution and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behaviour of AZ31 Mg alloy during co-extrusion were analyzed comprehensively. The results indicate that, in the initial stages of deformation, various variants of {10-12} extension twins (ETs) play a crucial role in refining the original grains, forming initial [10-10]//ED fiber texture components alongside other non-basal components. Upon entering the shear deformation (SD) zone, deformed twins disappear, and small dynamically recrystallized (DRXed) grains emerge along boundaries of coarse deformation grains and within the grains. Strong shear deformations and compressive stress from transverse direction (TD) induce intensified prismatic and pyramidal slip, promoting continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX). CDRX predominantly affects elongated deformed grains, forming an [10-10]//ED fiber texture through high-energy grain boundary segmentation. Subsequently, compatible stress increases due to the activity of non-basal slip dislocation and the reduction in grain boundary (GB) size. DDRX emerges as the dominant mechanism, generating randomized [10-10]//ED fiber and non-fiber textures within parent grains and at boundaries.

Abstract:AZ31 Mg alloy with heterogeneous bimodal grain structure (smaller grain size of 5–20 µm and coarser grain size of 100–200 µm) was subjected to accumulated extrusion bonding (AEB) at 250 ℃ combined with two-stage artificial cooling in this work, viz. local water cooling and artificial cooling. The microstructure developed consecutively as a result of discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) for the AEBed samples. {10–12} tensile twinning also played an important role for the AEB with local water cooling at the initial extrusion stage in the container. Local water cooling could further reduce the DRXed grain size to ~ 2.1 µm comparing that without water cooling. And the grain growth rate was reduced by artificial cooling out of extrusion die. Under the combination of two-stage cooling, the fine DRXed grains at sizing band were almost retained with average grain size of ~ 2.3 µm after the sheet out of extrusion die, and the unDRXed grains with high residual dislocation density accumulation were also reserved. The tensile tests results indicated that a good strength-ductility balance with a high ultimate tensile strength (319 MPa vs. 412 MPa) and fracture elongation (19.9 % vs. 30.3%) were obtained. The strength enhancement was mainly owing to the grain refinement and local residual plastic strain reserved by the artificial cooling. The excellent ductility originated from fine DRXed microstructure and ED-tilt double peak texture.

Abstract:In this study, interactive alternate forward extrusion (AFE) experiments with varying number of extrusion passes of AZ31 magnesium alloy were carried out. The evolution of microstructure, and texture and their effects on the mechanical properties were studied. The results show that with the increase of loading passes, the grains are significantly refined, and the dynamic recrystallisation (DRX) structure is uniformly distributed in the product, which is the main reason for the increase in microhardness, compressive strength and failure strain. Further, slip and twinning induced DRX behaviour are considered to be the main deformation methods in the early stage of deformation. Whereas continuous DRX is considered to be the main deformation methods for the change in grain morphology in the later stage. During the extrusion process, the deflection angle of the base pole decreases. Finally, the fibre texture is formed; the texture strength is significantly reduced because of the effect of recrystallisation. The AZ31 magnesium alloy interactive AFE process is discussed with respect to the technological experiment and the microstructure deformation, thus providing a vital scientific basis for further application.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic </h3>

Study on the Aging Precipitation Behavior and Kinetics of Al-10.0Zn-3.0Mg-2.8Cu Alloy by Pre-Deformation Treatment

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of thermomechanical treatment process on the hardening behavior, grain microstructure, precipitated phase, and tensile mechanical properties of the new high-strength and high-ductility Al-10.0Zn-3.0Mg-2.8Cu alloy was studied, and the optimal thermomechanical treatment process was established. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms were revealed, which provided technical and theoretical guidance for the engineering application of this kind of high strength-ductility aluminum alloy. Al-10.0Zn-3.0Mg-2.8Cu alloy cylindrical parts with external longitudinal reinforcement were prepared by a composite extrusion deformation process (reciprocal upsetting + counter-extrusion) with a true strain up to 2.56, and the organizational evolution of the alloys during the extrusion deformation process and the influence of pre-stretching treatments on the subsequent aging precipitation behaviors and mechanical properties were investigated. The results show that firstly, the large plastic deformation promotes the fragmentation of coarse insoluble phases and the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization, which results in the elongation of the grains along the extrusion direction, and the volume fraction of recrystallization reaches 42.4%. Secondly, the kinetic study showed that the decrease in the activation energy of precipitation increased the nucleation sites, which further promoted the diffuse distribution of the second phase in the alloy and a higher number of nucleation sites, while limiting the coarsening of the precipitated phase. When the amount of pre-deformation was increased from 0% to 2%, the size of the matrix precipitated phase decreased from 5.11 μm to 4.1 μm, and when the amount of pre-deformation was increased from 2% to 7%, the coarsening of the matrix precipitated phase took place, and the size of the phase increased from 4.1 μm to 7.24 μm. The finalized heat treatment process for the deformation of the aluminum alloy tailframe was as follows: solution (475 °C/3 h) + 2% pre-stretching + aging (120 °C/24 h), at which the comprehensive performance of the alloy was optimized, with a tensile strength of 634.2 MPa, a yield strength of 571.0 MPa, and an elongation of 15.2%. The alloy was strengthened by both precipitation strengthening and dislocation strengthening. After 2% pre-stretching, the fracture surface starts to be dominated by dense tough nest structure, and most of them are small tough nests, and small and dense tough nests are the main reason for the increase in alloy toughness after 2% pre-stretching deformation.
Developing a high-speed-extruded BMZQ5100 alloy with higher strength and microstructural thermal stability than AZ91 alloy

Abstract:A new Mg-5Bi-1Mn-0.5Zn-0.2Ag (BMZQ5100, wt%) alloy is developed and analyzed comparatively its extrudability, microstructure, mechanical property and thermal stability with a commercial AZ91 alloy. The results show that the BMZQ5100 alloy can be successfully extruded at a high extrusion speed (ES) of 30 m/min without surface cracks, but there are a large number of hot cracks occurred on the low-speed-extruded AZ91 alloy surface (ES: 5 m/min). For the 30 m/min extruded BMZQ5100 alloy (BMZQ5100-E30), it exhibits a completely dynamic recrystallized (DRX) grain structure with a slightly larger grain size and stronger basal fiber texture than the 2 m/min extruded AZ91 alloy (AZ91-E2) without surface cracks. In terms of second phase, the former alloy contains submicron Mg3Bi2 phases at grain boundaries (GBs), nano-scale Mg3Bi2 and α-Mn particles within grain interiors, along with the co-segregation of Zn and Ag at GBs. The latter alloy has a continuous network of submicron Mg17Al12 phases along GBs, but no any solute segregation is observed at GBs. The BMZQ5100-E30 alloy exhibits more excellent mechanical properties with a tensile yield strength of ∼ 271 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of ∼ 319 MPa and an acceptable elongation-to-failure of ∼ 8%, compared with the AZ91-E2 alloy. The GB strengthening, precipitation strengthening and solute segregation strengthening on the TYS occupy ∼ 46.2, ∼ 45.5 and ∼ 8.3%, respectively. In addition, the BMZQ5100-E30 alloy has higher microstructural thermal stability than the AZ91-E2 alloy, because of second phase pinning and solute segregation at GBs to effectively inhibit the grain growth during annealing.

Abstract:The effect of Al contents on the properties and structures of AZ80, AZ91，AZ131 and AZ151 magnesium alloys has been studied. The experiments of homogenization treatment, hot extrusion, and annealing treatment are carried out in order to study the effects of these processes to the properties and structure of AZ80, AZ91, AZ131 and AZ151 magnesium alloys. The parameters of homogenization treatment (420°C×24h, 420°C×36h) determined by DSC and metallurgical photo are sufficient which ensure the eutectic phase melt into magnesium matrix greatly. The strength of extruded bars shortly after homogenization treatment increase (Rp0.2 from 232 to 310MPa), but elongation decrease (A from 12 to 2.5%) with Al contents. The differences and causes of structure and mechanical properties of extruded bar after the process of aging are analyzed in detail by tensile experiments, hardness measurement, and optical observation.

Abstract:The effect of large pre-deformation on the microstructural evolution and mechanical property anisotropy of large-sized Al-Zn-Mg alloy extruded profiles with thin-walls and high-ribs was investigated. The increase in pre-deformation reduces the time required for the alloy to reach peak hardness during aging at 120 °C, but leads to a decrease in peak hardness. The undeformed alloy exhibits the highest ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 527 MPa and yield strength (YS) of 497 MPa in the 90° direction, accompanied by a low elongation (EL) of 12.7 %, highlighting significant anisotropy. At a large pre-deformation of 38 %, UTS, YS, and EL dramatically fall, with IPA values of 2.43 %, 3.77 %, and 11.96 %, respectively. Increased pre-deformation promotes the formation of substructures without altering the texture type, which remains predominantly A 1 * and A 2 * textures, but reduces texture intensity. After aging treatment, the primary intragranular precipitates are η' phases, and dislocations generated by pre-deformation stimulate the heterogeneous nucleation of η' phases and their transformation to η phases. Additionally, increased pre-deformation leads to the growth and uneven distribution of precipitates and an increase in the width of the precipitate-free zones (PFZ). The reduced anisotropy is attributed to decreased texture intensity, increased dislocation substructures, higher η phase content, and expanded PFZ width. Pre-deformation between 8 % and 18 % effectively maintains mechanical properties while reducing anisotropy. These findings provide insights into optimizing pre-deformation treatments to balance mechanical properties and anisotropy in Al-Zn-Mg alloy profiles.

Abstract:A large-size AZ80-Ag magnesium alloy support beam was fabricated via isothermal semi-closed die forging (ISDF). Its microstructure features and mechanical properties with or without subsequent aging were systematically characterized. The results indicate that the ISDF at 400°C creates strong basal texture and leads to an obvious mechanical anisotropy between the height direction (HD) and transverse direction (TD). Subsequent aging at 175°C can promote the discontinuous or continuous precipitation of β-Mg 17 Al 12 phases without changing the texture mode, whilst the mechanical anisotropy is significantly weakened as the difference in yield strength between TD and HD decreases from 71 MPa to 6 MPa after aging for 12 h. Such aging-induced anisotropy-weakening effect results from the fact that the HD is a soft direction for basal slip and the precipitate-strengthening related to β-Mg 17 Al 12 is more significant in this direction.
