Abstract:The human’s upright standing is a complex control process that is not yet fully understood. Postural control models can provide insights into the body’s internal control processes of balance behaviour. Using physiologically plausible models can also help explaining pathophysiological motion behaviour. In this paper, we introduce a neuromusculoskeletal postural control model using sensor feedback consisting of somatosensory, vestibular and visual information. The sagittal plane model was restricted to effectively six degrees of freedom and consisted of nine muscles per leg. Physiological plausible neural delays were considered for balance control. We applied forward dynamic simulations and a single shooting approach to generate healthy reactive balance behaviour during quiet and perturbed upright standing. Control parameters were optimized to minimize muscle effort. We showed that our model is capable of fulfilling the applied tasks successfully. We observed joint angles and ranges of motion in physiological plausible ranges and comparable to experimental data. This model represents the starting point for subsequent simulation of pathophysiological postural control behaviour.

Quantification of the Influence of Prosthetic Ankle Stiffness on Static Balance Using Lower Limb Prosthetic Simulators

Abstract:After a transtibial amputation, the prosthetic foot aims at replacing the missing ankle joint. Due to alteration of proprioception and mobility, the static balance of amputees is challenging. The stiffness of most of the usual prosthetic feet cannot adapt according to the situation. Thus, the control of the user’s balance is closely related to the ankle stiffness value. The aim of this study is to evaluate both the impact of the ankle stiffness and the visual system on static balance. In order to avoid bias relative to different levels of residual proprioception among individuals, the study has been carried out on healthy subjects wearing lower limb prosthetic simulators under each foot. This configuration could be considered as a relevant model to isolate the effect of the stiffness. Eleven subjects wearing prosthetic feet with different modules were asked to remain as static as possible both with open eyes (OE) and closed eyes (CE). The center of pressure (COP) displacements and the joint angles range of motion (ROM) were experimentally assessed. The length of the major axis of the COP 95% confidence ellipse was projected on the antero-posterior direction (AP range). Linear regression models of the AP range and joint angles ROM as a function of the situation (OE and CE) and of the normalized ankle stiffness were created. A one-way analysis of variance test was performed on the model of the AP range. Linear regression coefficients and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated between the AP range and the normalized ankle stiffness and between the joint angles ROM and the normalized ankle stiffness both in OE and CE. This study confirmed that static balance decreases when ankle stiffness decreases. The results also showed that a visual system alteration amplifies more significantly the decrease of static balance of people wearing prosthetic feet and has no significant influence on non-amputated subjects. The slope of the linear regression for the AP range according to the normalized ankle stiffness was equal to −9.86 (CI: −16.03, −3.69) with CE and −2.39 (CI: −4.94, 0.17) with OE. Both the normalized ankle stiffness and the visual system had a significant impact on the AP range (pvalue<0.05). The ankle stiffness is an interesting parameter as it has a high impact on the gait and on the static balance of the users and it must be controlled to properly design prosthetic feet.

Abstract:Aging is a crucial factor influencing postural stability control and contributing to frequent falls, yet its underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study aims to explore the effects of aging on postural stability control by comparing differences in postural stability and node strength of electroencephalogram (EEG) brain network between elderly and young people under the conditions of congruent and incongruent visual-vestibular sensory inputs. Eighteen elderly volunteers without neuromuscular disorders and eighteen young individuals participated in the present study. Virtual reality (VR) technology was employed to manipulate visual rotation stimuli (clockwise and counterclockwise), and a horizontal rotating platform was used for vestibular rotation stimuli (clockwise). Based on the directional disparity of sensory input in the horizontal plane, visual-vestibular input consistency was categorized as congruent and incongruent. Postural stability was assessed by the center of pressure (COP) trajectory, and EEG signals were collected and analyzed using directed network analysis to observe EEG brain network node connectivity strength. The results revealed that, under conditions of incongruent visual-vestibular sensory inputs, the elderly exhibited significantly inferior postural stability performance in terms of COP anterior-posterior (Y-axial) sway speed, total path length, anterior-posterior and medial-lateral sample entropy, compared to the young adults. Moreover, the node connectivity strength of visual cortex in the elderly was notably higher, while node connectivity strength of superior temporal cortex was significantly lower than that in the young adults. These findings suggest that the elderly have a heightened reliance on visual information in postural control and an impaired ability to cope with sensory conflicts arising from incongruent visual-vestibular sensory inputs, leading to compromised postural stability. The outcomes of this study hold significant implications for future assessments of balance function in the elder and fall prevention trainings.

Abstract:The walking human body is mechanically unstable. Loss of stability and falling is more likely in certain groups of people, such as older adults or people with neuromotor impairments, as well as in certain situations, such as when experiencing conflicting or distracting sensory inputs. Stability during walking is often characterized biomechanically, by measures based on body dynamics and the base of support. Neural control of upright stability, on the other hand, does not factor into commonly used stability measures. Here we analyze stability of human walking accounting for both biomechanics and neural control, using a modeling approach. We define a walking system as a combination of biomechanics, using the well known inverted pendulum model, and neural control, using a proportional-derivative controller for foot placement based on the state of the center of mass at midstance. We analyze this system formally and show that for any choice of system parameters there is always one periodic orbit. We then determine when this periodic orbit is stable, i.e. how the neural control gain values have to be chosen for stable walking. Following the formal analysis, we use this model to make predictions about neural control gains and compare these predictions with the literature and existing experimental data. The model predicts that control gains should increase with decreasing cadence. This finding appears in agreement with literature showing stronger effects of visual or vestibular manipulations at different walking speeds. The walking human body is mechanically unstable and humans frequently lose upright stability and fall while walking. Stability of human walking is usually analyzed from a biomechanical perspective. We argue that sensorimotor control is an essential aspect of walking stability. We model a walking system as a combination of inverted pendulum biomechanics and a neural feedback controller for foot placement and analyze the properties of this hybrid dynamical system. We find that there is always a periodic orbit and derive a criterion for the asymptotic stability of this periodic orbit. This analytic criterion allows us to characterize the region in the parameter space where the walking system is stable. We use these theoretical results to analyze stability of human walking depending on different sensorimotor control gains. The model predicts that control gains should be larger for slower-paced walking, which is partially consistent with the available experimental data.

Anticipatory and Compensatory Postural Adjustments in Response to Loading Perturbation of Unknown Magnitude

Abstract:In response to sudden postural perturbations, the posture control system uses anticipatory and compensatory postural adjustments (APAs and CPAs) to maintain balance and equilibrium. APAs strengthen as the perturbation magnitude increases, while CPAs remain constant because APAs make the necessary adjustments. However, the magnitude of a postural perturbation cannot always be fully known. This research focused on postural adjustments in response to perturbations with unknown magnitude. Participants caught falling sandbags of three weights on a tray held in their hands. Participants were told about the weight used for the upcoming trial in the KNOWN condition and not told in the UNKNOWN condition. Surface electromyography (sEMG) of the lumbar muscles and displacement of the center of pressure (COP) were recorded synchronously. The results showed that APAs and CPAs were stronger in the UNKNOWN condition than in the KNOWN condition. Meanwhile, in the UNKNOWN condition, the activity of the lumbar muscles and displacements of the COP showed no difference between weight levels. The lumbar erector spinae (LES) and lumbar multifidus (LMF) activated earlier in the UNKNOWN condition than for the heaviest weight in the KNOWN condition. The outcome of this study indicates that APAs and CPAs of lumbar muscles and displacements of the COP are affected by the knowledge of postural perturbations. The central nervous system (CNS) coped with load perturbations of unknown magnitude with redundancy response strategy, based on the maximum assumption of perturbation magnitude.

Abstract:Understanding of the human body's internal processes to maintain balance is fundamental to simulate postural control behaviour. The body uses multiple sensory systems' information to obtain a reliable estimate about the current body state. This information is used to control the reactive behaviour to maintain balance. To predict a certain motion behaviour with knowledge of the muscle forces, forward dynamic simulations of biomechanical human models can be utilized. We aim to use predictive postural control simulations to give therapy recommendations to patients suffering from postural disorders in the future. It is important to know which types of modelling approaches already exist to apply such predictive forward dynamic simulations. Current literature provides different models that aim to simulate human postural control. We conducted a systematic literature research to identify the different approaches of postural control models. The different approaches are discussed regarding their applied biomechanical models, sensory representation, sensory integration, and control methods in standing and gait simulations. We searched on Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed using a search string, scanned 1253 records, and found 102 studies to be eligible for inclusion. The included studies use different ways for sensory representation and integration, although underlying neural processes still remain unclear. We found that for postural control optimal control methods like linear quadratic regulators and model predictive control methods are used less, when models' level of details is increasing, and nonlinearities become more important. Considering musculoskeletal models, reflex-based and PD controllers are mainly applied and show promising results, as they aim to create human-like motion behaviour considering physiological processes.

Does proprioceptive reweighting contribute to reactive balance strategies during slip-like perturbations? a proof-of-concept in healthy adults

Abstract:Falls commonly occur during walking, particularly when struggling to respond to unexpected perturbations. Proprioception plays a significant role in detecting body destabilization even before reactions to perturbations are required. This study investigates the contribution of proprioceptive reweighting strategies to reactive balance during walking. This cross-sectional, proof-of-concept study included fifteen healthy adults (18–40 years). Ankle and back muscle vibrators disrupted proprioceptive input in stance, allowing calculation of the proprioceptive reweighting index. Walk-slip perturbations were then administered on an ActiveStep treadmill. A linear regression model assessed the significance of proprioceptive reweighting in predicting post-slip stability (margin of stability). Participants shifted from an ankle-steered to a central-steered proprioceptive strategy on a foam surface with closed eyes (Difference = 15.70 % (SD=37.87), 95 %CI [0.41, 30.99], p = 0.045). The regression model explained 22.7 % of the variance in pre-touchdown margin of stability, with proprioceptive reweighting on foam significantly contributing to post-perturbation postural control (p < 0.001). Proprioceptive reweighting provides a moderate explanation for the mechanisms of reactive balance, highlighting that the key to effective balance recovery strategies may lie in the person's ability to both detect and respond to imbalances. Further research should explore if these proprioceptive strategies are a matter of directional control and if responses differ in older adults.

Abstract:Despite the abundance of studies on the control of standing balance, insights about the roles of biomechanics and neural control have been limited. Previous work introduced an analysis combining the direction and orientation of ground reaction forces. The “intersection point” of the lines of actions of these forces exhibited a consistent pattern across healthy, young subjects when computed for different frequency components of the center of pressure signal. To investigate the control strategy of quiet stance, we applied this intersection point analysis to experimental data of 15 healthy, young subjects balancing in tandem stance on a narrow beam and on the ground. Data from the sagittal and frontal planes were analyzed separately. The task was modeled as a double-inverted pendulum controlled by an optimal controller with torque-actuated ankle and hip joints and additive white noise. To test our prediction that the controller that minimized overall joint effort would yield the best fit across the tested conditions and planes of analyses, experimental results were compared to simulation outcomes. The controller that minimized overall effort produced the best fit in both balance conditions and planes of analyses. For some conditions, the relative penalty on the hip and ankle joints varied in a way relevant to the balance condition or to the plane of analysis. These results suggest that unimpaired quiet balance in a challenging environment can be best described by a controller that maintains minimal effort through the adjustment of relative ankle and hip joint torques.

Abstract:Successful reactive balance control requires coordinated modulation of hip, knee, and ankle torques. Stabilizing joint torques arise from feedforward neural signals that modulate the musculoskeletal system's intrinsic mechanical properties, namely muscle short-range stiffness, and neural feedback pathways that activate muscles in response to sensory input. Although feedforward and feedback pathways are known to modulate the torque at each joint, the role of each pathway to the balance-correcting response across joints is poorly understood. Since the feedforward and feedback torque responses act at different delays following perturbations to balance, we modified the sensorimotor response model (SRM), previously used to analyze the muscle activation response to perturbations, to consist of parallel feedback loops with different delays. Each loop within the model is driven by the same information, center of mass (CoM) kinematics, but each loop has an independent delay. We evaluated if a parallel loop SRM could decompose the reactive torques into the feedforward and feedback contributions during balance-correcting responses to backward support surface translations at four magnitudes. The SRM accurately reconstructed reactive joint torques at the hip, knee, and ankle, across all perturbation magnitudes (R2>0.84 & VAF>0.83). Moreover, the hip and knee exhibited feedforward and feedback components, while the ankle only exhibited feedback components. The lack of a feedforward component at the ankle may occur because the compliance of the Achilles tendon attenuates muscle short-range stiffness. Our model may provide a framework for evaluating changes in the feedforward and feedback contributions to balance that occur due to aging, injury, or disease.

A neuromusculoskeletal modelling approach to bilateral hip mechanics due to unexpected lateral perturbations during overground walking

Abstract:Background: Current studies on how external perturbations impact gait dynamics have primarily focused on the changes in the body's center of mass (CoM) during treadmill walking. The biomechanical responses, in particular to the multi-planar hip joint coordination, following perturbations in overground walking conditions are not completely known. Methods: In this study, a customized gait-perturbing device was designed to impose controlled lateral forces onto the subject's pelvis during overground walking. The biomechanical responses of bilateral hips were simulated by subject-specific neuromusculoskeletal models (NMS) driven by in-vivo motion data, which were further evaluated by statistical parameter mapping (SPM) and muscle coactivation index (CI) analysis. The validity of the subject-specific NMS was confirmed through comparison with measured surface electromyographic signals. Results: Following perturbations, the sagittal-plane hip motions were reduced for the leading leg by 18.39° and for the trailing leg by 8.23°, while motions in the frontal and transverse plane were increased, with increased hip abduction for the leading leg by 10.71° and external rotation by 9.06°, respectively. For the hip kinetics, both the bilateral hip joints showed increased abductor moments during midstance (20%-30% gait cycle) and decreased values during terminal stance (38%-48%). Muscle CI in both sagittal and frontal planes was significantly decreased for perturbed walking (p < 0.05), except for the leading leg in the sagittal plane. Conclusion: The distinctive phase-dependent biomechanical response of the hip demonstrated its coordinated control strategy for balance recovery due to gait perturbations. And the changes in muscle CI suggested a potential mechanism for rapid and precise control of foot placement through modulation of joint stiffness properties. These findings obtained during actual overground perturbation conditions could have implications for the improved design of wearable robotic devices for balance assistance.

Abstract:The role of the cortex in shaping automatic whole-body motor behaviors such as walking and balance is poorly understood. Gait and balance are typically mediated through subcortical circuits, with the cortex becoming engaged as needed on an individual basis by task difficulty and complexity. However, we lack a mechanistic understanding of how increased cortical contribution to whole-body movements shapes motor output. Here we use reactive balance recovery as a paradigm to identify relationships between hierarchical control mechanisms and their engagement across balance tasks of increasing difficulty in young adults. We hypothesize that parallel sensorimotor feedback loops engaging subcortical and cortical circuits contribute to balance-correcting muscle activity, and that the involvement of cortical circuits increases with balance challenge. We decomposed balance-correcting muscle activity based on hypothesized subcortically- and cortically-mediated feedback components driven by similar sensory information, but with different loop delays. The initial balance-correcting muscle activity was engaged at all levels of balance difficulty. Its onset latency was consistent with subcortical sensorimotor loops observed in the lower limb. An even later, presumed, cortically-mediated burst of muscle activity became additionally engaged as balance task difficulty increased, at latencies consistent with longer transcortical sensorimotor loops. We further demonstrate that evoked cortical activity in central midline areas measured using electroencephalography (EEG) can be explained by a similar sensory transformation as muscle activity but at a delay consistent with its role in a transcortical loop driving later cortical contributions to balance-correcting muscle activity. These results demonstrate that a neuromechanical model of muscle activity can be used to infer cortical contributions to muscle activity without recording brain activity. Our model may provide a useful framework for evaluating changes in cortical contributions to balance that are associated with falls in older adults and in neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Our goal is to gain a mechanistic understanding of how cortical and subcortical systems shape motor output in whole-body movements. Using novel neuromechanical models, we identify how cortical and subcortical control mechanisms differentially contribute to balance-correcting muscle activity across reactive balance task difficulty. Bursts of balance-correcting muscle activity in young adults were decomposed into parallel sensorimotor feedback components driven by balance error but acting at different loop latencies. Corroborating the transcortical nature of the longer latency loop, we showed that evoked cortical responses to perturbations were also driven by balance error. While the contributions of the faster subcortical loop to muscle activity was present in all perturbation levels, the slower cortically-mediated burst of muscle was increasingly engaged with difficulty level. Our computational framework thus dissociates cortical and subcortical muscle activity components of balance control which may be useful to inform balance training and rehabilitation.

Characterization of Human Balance through a Reinforcement Learning-based Muscle Controller

Abstract:Balance assessment during physical rehabilitation often relies on rubric-oriented battery tests to score a patient's physical capabilities, leading to subjectivity. While some objective balance assessments exist, they are often limited to tracking the center of pressure (COP), which does not fully capture the whole-body postural stability. This study explores the use of the center of mass (COM) state space and presents a promising avenue for monitoring the balance capabilities in humans. We employ a musculoskeletal model integrated with a balance controller, trained through reinforcement learning (RL), to investigate balancing capabilities. The RL framework consists of two interconnected neural networks governing balance recovery and muscle coordination respectively, trained using Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) with reference state initialization, early termination, and multiple training strategies. By exploring recovery from random initial COM states (position and velocity) space for a trained controller, we obtain the final BR enclosing successful balance recovery trajectories. Comparing the BRs with analytical postural stability limits from a linear inverted pendulum model, we observe a similar trend in successful COM states but more limited ranges in the recoverable areas. We further investigate the effect of muscle weakness and neural excitation delay on the BRs, revealing reduced balancing capability in different regions. Overall, our approach of learning muscular balance controllers presents a promising new method for establishing balance recovery limits and objectively assessing balance capability in bipedal systems, particularly in humans.

Effects of external loads on balance control during upright stance: Experimental results and model-based predictions

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of external loads on balance control during upright stance, and to examine the ability of a new balance control model to predict these effects. External loads were applied to 12 young, healthy participants, and effects on balance control were characterized by center-of-pressure (COP) based measures. Several loading conditions were studied, involving combinations of load mass (10% and 20% of individual body mass) and height (at or 15% of stature above the whole-body COM). A balance control model based on an optimal control strategy was used to predict COP time series. It was assumed that a given individual would adopt the same neural optimal control mechanisms, identified in a no-load condition, under diverse external loading conditions. With the application of external loads, COP mean velocity in the anterior-posterior direction and RMS distance in the medial-lateral direction increased 8.1% and 10.4%, respectively. Predicted COP mean velocity and RMS distance in the anterior-posterior direction also increased with external loading, by 11.1% and 2.9%, respectively. Both experimental COP data and model-based predictions provided the same general conclusion, that application of larger external loads and loads more superior to the whole body center of mass lead to less effective postural control and perhaps a greater risk of loss of balance or falls. Thus, it can be concluded that the assumption about consistency in control mechanisms was partially supported, and it is the mechanical changes induced by external loads that primarily affect balance control.

Sensorimotor integration in human postural control

Abstract:It is generally accepted that human bipedal upright stance is achieved by feedback mechanisms that generate an appropriate corrective torque based on body-sway motion detected primarily by visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive sensory systems. Because orientation information from the various senses is not always available (eyes closed) or accurate (compliant support surface), the postural control system must somehow adjust to maintain stance in a wide variety of environmental conditions. This is the sensorimotor integration problem that we investigated by evoking anterior-posterior (AP) body sway using pseudorandom rotation of the visual surround and/or support surface (amplitudes 0.5-8 degrees ) in both normal subjects and subjects with severe bilateral vestibular loss (VL). AP rotation of body center-of-mass (COM) was measured in response to six conditions offering different combinations of available sensory information. Stimulus-response data were analyzed using spectral analysis to compute transfer functions and coherence functions over a frequency range from 0.017 to 2.23 Hz. Stimulus-response data were quite linear for any given condition and amplitude. However, overall behavior in normal subjects was nonlinear because gain decreased and phase functions sometimes changed with increasing stimulus amplitude. "Sensory channel reweighting" could account for this nonlinear behavior with subjects showing increasing reliance on vestibular cues as stimulus amplitudes increased. VL subjects could not perform this reweighting, and their stimulus-response behavior remained quite linear. Transfer function curve fits based on a simple feedback control model provided estimates of postural stiffness, damping, and feedback time delay. There were only small changes in these parameters with increasing visual stimulus amplitude. However, stiffness increased as much as 60% with increasing support surface amplitude. To maintain postural stability and avoid resonant behavior, an increase in stiffness should be accompanied by a corresponding increase in damping. Increased damping was achieved primarily by decreasing the apparent time delay of feedback control rather than by changing the damping coefficient (i.e., corrective torque related to body-sway velocity). In normal subjects, stiffness and damping were highly correlated with body mass and moment of inertia, with stiffness always about 1/3 larger than necessary to resist the destabilizing torque due to gravity. The stiffness parameter in some VL subjects was larger compared with normal subjects, suggesting that they may use increased stiffness to help compensate for their loss. Overall results show that the simple act of standing quietly depends on a remarkably complex sensorimotor control system.

Abstract:BackgroundPrevious research on balance mostly focused on the assessment, training, and improvements of balance through interventions. We investigated tools commonly used to study static balance. Differences in postural stability were analyzed using multiscale entropy (MSE) and feature analysis.MethodsA force plate and inertial sensor were used to collect acceleration and center-of-pressure (COP) nonlinear signals. MSE was also used to detect fractal correlations and assess the complexity of univariate data complexity. Fifteen healthy subjects participated in the experiments. Each stood on a force plate and wore a sensor while attempting to maintain postural stability for 30 s in four randomized experiments to evaluate their static balance via a copositive experiment with eyes open/closed and with standing on one foot or both feet. A Wilcoxon-signed rank test was used to confirm that the conditions were significant. Considering the effect of the assessment tools, the influence of the visual and lower limb systems on postural stability was assessed and the results from the inertial sensor and force plate experiments were compared.ResultsForce plate usage provided more accurate readings when completing static balance tasks based on the visual system, whereas an inertial sensor was preferred for lower-limb tasks. Further, the eyes-open-standing-on-one-foot case involved the highest complexity at the X, Y, and Z axes for acceleration and at the ML axis for COP compared with other conditions, from which the axial directions can be identified.ConclusionsThe findings suggested investigation of different evaluation tool choices that can be easily adapted to suit different needs. The results for the complexity index and traditional balance indicators were comparable in their implications on different conditions. We used MSE to determine the equipment that measures the postural stability performance. We attempted to generalize the applications of complexity index to tasks and training characteristics and explore different tools to obtain different results.Trial registrationThis study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of National Taiwan University and classified as expedited on August 24, 2017. Predicting losses of balance during upright stance: evaluation of a novel approach based on wearable accelerometers

Abstract:The study of postural sway during quiet stance has proved to be a useful approach to investigate the function of the balance system. Recent studies have suggested that providing information on postural sway to vestibular patients through biofeedback may improve their balance awareness and therefore reduce their risk of falling. One drawback common to these approaches is related to timing: informing a patient about current balance conditions may not allow enough time to react and avoid a fall. Here we propose a new technique for predicting relevant balance related events based on the recording of inertial information on trunk and thigh movement using wearable devices. We have developed a regressive model for the prediction of quiet stance dynamics of the center of body mass (CM), based on these sensory data. Our preliminary results show that, with careful signal processing, such approach may allow to learn quiet stance dynamics based on the inverted pendulum model and use it in predicting critical balance conditions with a few hundreds of milliseconds advance. When these predictions are then used for event-detection the system provides accurate results and is thus promising for the development of a fall prevention device.

Abstract:The human postural control system can maintain our balance in an upright stance. A simplified control model that can mimic the mechanisms of this complex system and adapt to the changes due to aging and injuries is a significant problem that can be used in clinical applications. While the Intermittent Proportional Derivative (IPD) is commonly used as a postural sway model in the upright stance, it does not consider the predictability and adaptability behavior of the human postural control system and the physical limitations of the human musculoskeletal system. In this article, we studied the methods based on optimization algorithms that can mimic the performance of the postural sway controller in the upright stance. First, we compared three optimal methods (Model Predictive Control (MPC), COP-Based Controller (COP-BC) and Momentum-Based Controller (MBC)) in simulation by considering a feedback structure of the dynamic of the skeletal body as a double link inverted pendulum while taking into account sensory noise and neurological time delay. Second, we evaluated the validity of these methods by the postural sway data of ten subjects in quiet stance trials. The results revealed that the optimal methods could mimic the postural sway with higher accuracy and less energy consumption in the joints compared to the IPD method. Among optimal approaches, COP-BC and MPC show promising results to mimic the human postural sway. The choice of controller weights and parameters is a trade-off between the consumption of energy in the joints and the prediction accuracy. Therefore, the capability and (dis)advantage of each method reviewed in this article can navigate the usage of each controller in different applications of postural sway, from clinical assessments to robotic applications.
