Abstract:Background Balance perturbation studies during walking have improved our understanding of balance control in various destabilizing conditions. However, it is unknown to what extent balance recovery strategies can be generalized across different types of mediolateral balance perturbations. Research question Do similar mediolateral perturbations (foot placement versus surface translation) have similar effects on balance control and corresponding balance response strategies? Methods Kinetic and kinematic data were previously collected during two separate studies, each with 15 young, healthy participants walking on an instrumented treadmill. In both studies, medial and lateral balance perturbations were applied at 80% of the gait cycle either by a treadmill surface translation or a pneumatic force applied to the swing foot. Differences in balance control (frontal plane whole body angular momentum) and balance response strategies (hip abduction moment, ankle inversion moment, center of pressure excursion and frontal plane trunk moment) between perturbed and unperturbed gait cycles were evaluated using statistical parametric mapping. Results Balance disruptions after foot placement perturbations were larger and sustained longer compared to surface translations. Changes in joint moment responses were also larger for the foot placement perturbations compared to the surface translation perturbations. Lateral hip, ankle, and trunk strategies were used to maintain balance after medial foot placement perturbations, while a trunk strategy was primarily used after surface translations. Significance Surface and foot placement perturbations influence balance control and corresponding response strategies differently. These results can help inform the development of perturbation-based balance training aimed at reducing falls in clinical populations.

Abstract:During human walking, the centre of mass (CoM) is outside the base of support for most of the time, which poses a challenge to stabilizing the gait pattern. Nevertheless, most of us are able to walk without substantial problems. In this review, we aim to provide an integrative overview of how humans cope with an underactuated gait pattern. A central idea that emerges from the literature is that foot placement is crucial in maintaining a stable gait pattern. In this review, we explore this idea; we first describe mechanical models and concepts that have been used to predict how foot placement can be used to control gait stability. These concepts, such as for instance the extrapolated CoM concept, the foot placement estimator concept and the capture point concept, provide explicit predictions on where to place the foot relative to the body at each step, such that gait is stabilized. Next, we describe empirical findings on foot placement during human gait in unperturbed and perturbed conditions. We conclude that humans show behaviour that is largely in accordance with the aforementioned concepts, with foot placement being actively coordinated to body CoM kinematics during the preceding step. In this section, we also address the requirements for such control in terms of the sensory information and the motor strategies that can implement such control, as well as the parts of the central nervous system that may be involved. We show that visual, vestibular and proprioceptive information contribute to estimation of the state of the CoM. Foot placement is adjusted to variations in CoM state mainly by modulation of hip abductor muscle activity during the swing phase of gait, and this process appears to be under spinal and supraspinal, including cortical, control. We conclude with a description of how control of foot placement can be impaired in humans, using ageing as a primary example and with some reference to pathology, and we address alternative strategies available to stabilize gait, which include modulation of ankle moments in the stance leg and changes in body angular momentum, such as rapid trunk tilts. Finally, for future research, we believe that especially the integration of consideration of environmental constraints on foot placement with balance control deserves attention.

Abstract:Human bipedal gait is exceptionally stable, but the underlying strategies to maintain stability are unclear, especially in the frontal plane. Our study investigated balance strategies of healthy adults subjected to continuous mediolateral oscillations at the trunk during walking. We used a backpack with a passive inverted pendulum to create perturbations that were fixed, in-phase or out-of-phase with subjects' trunk. We evaluated subjects' corrective strategies and whether they yielded equivalent stability, measured by the margin of stability and the local divergence exponent. The margin of stability measure quantified adjustments in step behaviour relative to the centre of mass, and the local divergence exponent measure characterized the chaotic behaviour of the system throughout the entire trial. Among the conditions, there was no significant difference in the step width. We found a higher margin of stability for the out-of-phase condition and the lowest local divergence exponent for the in-phase condition and the highest for the fixed condition. These results indicate that the in-phase condition was more stable with respect to fluctuations throughout gait cycles, and the out-of-phase condition was more stable in terms of foot placement relative to centre of mass. To maintain equivalent or greater gait stability, subjects elected to reduce the motion of their centre of mass rather than alter step width. The reduction in centre of mass motion without a reduction in step width suggests direct control of the centre of mass to maintain stability was preferred over adjusting stepping behaviour.

Abstract:Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) have become popular in higher education in recent years due to their ability to provide additional and flexible solutions for students and researchers. However, the limitations of VLEs have led to the development of a new generation of VLE – the Personal Learning Environment (PLE). PLEs avoid these limitations and have new features that allow students to control and develop new applications, such as Web 2.0 applications and social networks. Whilst PLEs have resolved some of the drawbacks of VLEs, it is argued that PLEs also have greater potential to cover a wider range of aspects. This paper presents a proactive context-aware architecture for PLE supporting two major objectives: lifelong access and learner-centric study, covering both traditional formal (institution-based) and informal (private, non-institution-based) academic learning. Bayesian Networks are graphical modeling tools that have been used for modeling uncertain knowledge. Moreover, BN has been used in this research to implement the proposed architecture.

Abstract:Despite the abundance of studies on the control of standing balance, insights about the roles of biomechanics and neural control have been limited. Previous work introduced an analysis combining the direction and orientation of ground reaction forces. The “intersection point” of the lines of actions of these forces exhibited a consistent pattern across healthy, young subjects when computed for different frequency components of the center of pressure signal. To investigate the control strategy of quiet stance, we applied this intersection point analysis to experimental data of 15 healthy, young subjects balancing in tandem stance on a narrow beam and on the ground. Data from the sagittal and frontal planes were analyzed separately. The task was modeled as a double-inverted pendulum controlled by an optimal controller with torque-actuated ankle and hip joints and additive white noise. To test our prediction that the controller that minimized overall joint effort would yield the best fit across the tested conditions and planes of analyses, experimental results were compared to simulation outcomes. The controller that minimized overall effort produced the best fit in both balance conditions and planes of analyses. For some conditions, the relative penalty on the hip and ankle joints varied in a way relevant to the balance condition or to the plane of analysis. These results suggest that unimpaired quiet balance in a challenging environment can be best described by a controller that maintains minimal effort through the adjustment of relative ankle and hip joint torques.

A neuromusculoskeletal modelling approach to bilateral hip mechanics due to unexpected lateral perturbations during overground walking

Abstract:Background: Current studies on how external perturbations impact gait dynamics have primarily focused on the changes in the body's center of mass (CoM) during treadmill walking. The biomechanical responses, in particular to the multi-planar hip joint coordination, following perturbations in overground walking conditions are not completely known. Methods: In this study, a customized gait-perturbing device was designed to impose controlled lateral forces onto the subject's pelvis during overground walking. The biomechanical responses of bilateral hips were simulated by subject-specific neuromusculoskeletal models (NMS) driven by in-vivo motion data, which were further evaluated by statistical parameter mapping (SPM) and muscle coactivation index (CI) analysis. The validity of the subject-specific NMS was confirmed through comparison with measured surface electromyographic signals. Results: Following perturbations, the sagittal-plane hip motions were reduced for the leading leg by 18.39° and for the trailing leg by 8.23°, while motions in the frontal and transverse plane were increased, with increased hip abduction for the leading leg by 10.71° and external rotation by 9.06°, respectively. For the hip kinetics, both the bilateral hip joints showed increased abductor moments during midstance (20%-30% gait cycle) and decreased values during terminal stance (38%-48%). Muscle CI in both sagittal and frontal planes was significantly decreased for perturbed walking (p < 0.05), except for the leading leg in the sagittal plane. Conclusion: The distinctive phase-dependent biomechanical response of the hip demonstrated its coordinated control strategy for balance recovery due to gait perturbations. And the changes in muscle CI suggested a potential mechanism for rapid and precise control of foot placement through modulation of joint stiffness properties. These findings obtained during actual overground perturbation conditions could have implications for the improved design of wearable robotic devices for balance assistance.

Abstract:People use the mechanical interplay between stability and manoeuvrability to successfully walk. During single limb support, body states (position and velocity) that increase lateral stability will inherently resist lateral manoeuvres, decrease medial stability, and facilitate medial manoeuvres. Although not well understood, people can make behavioural decisions exploiting this relationship in anticipation of perturbations or direction changes. To characterize the behavioural component of the stability-manoeuvrability relationship, twenty-four participants performed many repetitions of a discrete stepping task involving mid-trial reactive manoeuvres (medial or lateral direction) in a Baseline (no external perturbations) and Perturbed (random mediolateral perturbations applied to their pelvis) environment. We hypothesized people would make systematic changes in lateral stability dependent on both environment (increasing lateral stability in the Perturbed environment) and anticipated manoeuvre direction (reducing lateral stability to facilitate lateral manoeuvres). Participants increased lateral stability in the Perturbed environment, coinciding with an increase in manoeuvre reaction time for laterally but not medially directed manoeuvres. Moreover, we observed lower lateral stability in both environments when people anticipated making a lateral manoeuvre when compared to medial manoeuvres. These results support the hypothesis that people behaviourally exploit the mechanical relationship between lateral stability and manoeuvrability depending on walk task goals and external environment.

Abstract:Region growing has been widely used in image segmentation applications. Iovan et al. (2007) has used region growing technique to delineate trees in urban settlements with Quickbird imagery. However, there is a room for improvement in the extraction accuracy. This study attempts to improve the tree crown detections from high resolution satellite imagery with wavelet transform and region growing. We shall discuss how the biorthogonal wavelet transform is utilized in the segmentation first, and then follow by the grass/tree segmentation by region growing. It is proven that accuracy is higher when wavelets are integrated into the segmentation and extraction procedures.
An interventional exploratory study to assess the effect of footwear on postural stability and strategy during quiet standing

Abstract:A stable quiet stance is achieved by controlling the relative position of the center of pressure and the vertical projection of the center of mass. The best postural performances include efficient strategies to mitigate external perturbations. Footwear impacts postural stability and strategy by affecting cutaneous proprioception and ankle proprioception in the case of heeled shoes. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of four common footwear conditions, i.e. barefoot, sports, flats, and heels, on postural stability and strategy during quiet standing of healthy young women. Postural stability and strategy were assessed overall and in the antero-posterior and medio-lateral directions using five parameters: total sway, average center of pressure (COP) velocity, α value computed using detrended fluctuation analysis, hip over ankle ranges of motion, and power of the COP time series. Significant differences with barefoot were consistently found when wearing heels, namely a decrease in postural sway and average COP velocity. Results seemed counter-intuitive as they indicate an apparent increase in postural stability when wearing heels. A deeper analysis revealed a more complex scheme. A potential tightening of the motion when wearing heels, combined with an increase of the neutral plantarflexion angle, shifts the postural strategy towards a predominant hip strategy. Finally, proprioception did not play a key role. This study highlighted the complexity of the multifactorial interactions between footwear characteristics and postural strategies. Additional work is needed to develop footwear that will enhance postural stability of populations at risk, such as pregnant women or the elderly.

Abstract:The walking human body is mechanically unstable. Loss of stability and falling is more likely in certain groups of people, such as older adults or people with neuromotor impairments, as well as in certain situations, such as when experiencing conflicting or distracting sensory inputs. Stability during walking is often characterized biomechanically, by measures based on body dynamics and the base of support. Neural control of upright stability, on the other hand, does not factor into commonly used stability measures. Here we analyze stability of human walking accounting for both biomechanics and neural control, using a modeling approach. We define a walking system as a combination of biomechanics, using the well known inverted pendulum model, and neural control, using a proportional-derivative controller for foot placement based on the state of the center of mass at midstance. We analyze this system formally and show that for any choice of system parameters there is always one periodic orbit. We then determine when this periodic orbit is stable, i.e. how the neural control gain values have to be chosen for stable walking. Following the formal analysis, we use this model to make predictions about neural control gains and compare these predictions with the literature and existing experimental data. The model predicts that control gains should increase with decreasing cadence. This finding appears in agreement with literature showing stronger effects of visual or vestibular manipulations at different walking speeds. The walking human body is mechanically unstable and humans frequently lose upright stability and fall while walking. Stability of human walking is usually analyzed from a biomechanical perspective. We argue that sensorimotor control is an essential aspect of walking stability. We model a walking system as a combination of inverted pendulum biomechanics and a neural feedback controller for foot placement and analyze the properties of this hybrid dynamical system. We find that there is always a periodic orbit and derive a criterion for the asymptotic stability of this periodic orbit. This analytic criterion allows us to characterize the region in the parameter space where the walking system is stable. We use these theoretical results to analyze stability of human walking depending on different sensorimotor control gains. The model predicts that control gains should be larger for slower-paced walking, which is partially consistent with the available experimental data.

Abstract:Humans typically plan foot placement strategy multiple steps in advance when walking across complex terrain. Planning steps in advance is beneficial for both upright stability and forward progress, but one drawback is that new obstacles can make planned foot placement location unsafe between planning and execution, necessitating a rapid shift to foot placement that impacts stability and progress. This study investigates the bases for selection of alternate foot placement during both straight- and turning-gait. Thirteen healthy young adults walked along a virtually projected walkway with precision footholds oriented in either a straight line or with a single 60°, 90°, or 120° turn to the right. On a subset of trials, participants were required to rapidly avoid stepping on select footholds. We found stereotyped alternate foot placement strategies across turn angles that differed by turn strategy. Alternate foot placement for step turns supported the walker's instantaneous kinematics but not the planned change in trajectory; whereas foot placement for disrupted spin turns supported the walker's anticipated change in trajectory. We conclude that when humans are forced to rapidly alter previously developed motor plans for foot placement, they utilize a rapid stereotyped behavior that changes based on the demand of the turn.

Abstract:Walking without falling requires stabilization of the trajectory of the body center of mass relative to the base of support. Model studies suggest that this requires active, feedback control, i.e., the nervous system must process sensory information on the state of the body to generate descending motor commands to the muscles to stabilize walking, especially in the mediolateral direction. Stabilization of bipedal gait is challenging and can be impaired in older and diseased individuals. In this tutorial, we illustrate how gait analysis can be used to assess the stabilizing feedback control of gait. We present methods ranging from those that require limited input data (e.g. position data of markers placed on the feet and pelvis only) to those that require full-body kinematics and electromyography. Analyses range from simple kinematics analyses to inverse dynamics. These methods assess stabilizing feedback control of human walking at three levels: 1) the level of center of mass movement and horizontal ground reaction forces, 2) the level of center of mass movement and foot placement and 3) the level of center of mass movement and the joint moments or muscle activity. We show how these can be calculated and provide a GitHub repository (https://github.com/VU-HMS/Tutorial-stabilizing-walking) which contains open access Matlab and Python code to calculate these. Finally, we discuss what information on feedback control can be learned from each of these.

Abstract:Background Reactive lower limb muscle function during walking plays a role in balance, stability, and ultimately fall prevention. The objective of this study was to evaluate muscle and joint function used to regain balance after trip-based perturbations during walking. Research question How are lower limb muscles used to recover from external tripping during walking? Method The dominant legs of 20 healthy adult participants with similar athletic backgrounds were tripped using a split-belt instrumented treadmill. High- and medium-intensity trips were simulated by deceleration of the dominant leg at initial contact from the speed of 1.1 m/s to 0 m/s and back to 1.1 m/s in 0.4 s and 0.8 s, respectively. Lower limb kinematics, kinetics, and muscle forces following perturbations were computed to pre-perturbation values using statistical parametric mapping (SPM) paired t -test. Results A greater ankle dorsiflexion angle (mean difference: 5.3°), ankle plantar flexion moment (mean difference: 0.6 Nm / kg ), and gastrocnemius and soleus muscle forces (mean difference: 4.27 N / kg and 13.56 N / kg for GAS and SOL, respectively) were observed post-perturbation step despite the magnitude of the perturbation. Significance This study concludes that adequate timely response of ankle function during a compensatory step is required for a successful recovery after tripping during walking in young healthy adults. Weakness in plantar flexors suggests insufficient ankle moments, which ultimately can result in falls. The findings of this paper can be used as a reference for the joint moments and range of motion needed to recover trips in the design of assistive devices. In addition to that, clinicians can use the estimated values of muscle forces and the pattern of muscle activities to design targeted training in fall prevention among the elderly.
Ankle strategy assistance to improve gait stability using controllers based on in-shoe center of pressure in 2 degree-of-freedom powered ankle-foot orthoses: a clinical study

Abstract:Background: Although the ankle strategy is important for achieving frontal plane stability during one-leg stance, previously developed powered ankle-foot orthoses (PAFOs) did not involve ankle strategies because of hardware limitations. Weakness of movement in frontal plane is a factor that deteriorates gait stability and increases fall risk so it should not be overlooked in rehabilitation. Therefore, we used PAFO with subtalar joint for frontal plane movement and tried to confirm that the existence of it is important in balancing through clinical experiments. Methods: We developed a proportional CoP controller to assist ankle strategy or stabilizing moment and enhance eversion to compensate for the tilting moment with 2 dof PAFO. It was true experimental study, and we recruited seven healthy subjects (30 ± 4 years) who did not experience any gait abnormality participated in walking experiments for evaluating the immediate effect of subtalar joint of PAFO on their gait stability. They walked on the treadmill with several cases of controllers for data acquisitions. Indices of gait stability and electromyography for muscle activity were measured and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to identify meaningful changes. Results: We found that subjects were most stable during walking (in terms of largest Lyapunov exponents, p < 0.008) with the assistance of the PAFO when their electromyographic activity was the most reduced (p < 0.008), although postural sway increased when a proportional CoP controller was used to assist the ankle strategy (p < 0.008). Other indices of gait stability, kinematic variability, showed no difference between the powered and unpowered conditions (p > 0.008). The results of the correlation analysis indicate that the actuator of the PAFO enhanced eversion and preserved the location of the CoP in the medial direction so that gait stability was not negatively affected or improved. Conclusions: We verified that the developed 2 dof PAFO assists the ankle strategy by compensating for the tilting moment with proportional CoP controller and that wearer can walk in a stable state when the orthosis provides power for reducing muscle activity. This result is meaningful because an ankle strategy should be considered in the development of PAFOs for enhancing or even rehabilitating proprioception. Trial registration 7001988-202003-HR-833-03.

Abstract:Falls commonly occur during walking, particularly when struggling to respond to unexpected perturbations. Proprioception plays a significant role in detecting body destabilization even before reactions to perturbations are required. This study investigates the contribution of proprioceptive reweighting strategies to reactive balance during walking. This cross-sectional, proof-of-concept study included fifteen healthy adults (18–40 years). Ankle and back muscle vibrators disrupted proprioceptive input in stance, allowing calculation of the proprioceptive reweighting index. Walk-slip perturbations were then administered on an ActiveStep treadmill. A linear regression model assessed the significance of proprioceptive reweighting in predicting post-slip stability (margin of stability). Participants shifted from an ankle-steered to a central-steered proprioceptive strategy on a foam surface with closed eyes (Difference = 15.70 % (SD=37.87), 95 %CI [0.41, 30.99], p = 0.045). The regression model explained 22.7 % of the variance in pre-touchdown margin of stability, with proprioceptive reweighting on foam significantly contributing to post-perturbation postural control (p < 0.001). Proprioceptive reweighting provides a moderate explanation for the mechanisms of reactive balance, highlighting that the key to effective balance recovery strategies may lie in the person's ability to both detect and respond to imbalances. Further research should explore if these proprioceptive strategies are a matter of directional control and if responses differ in older adults.

A model of task-level human stepping regulation yields semistable walking

Abstract:A simple lateral dynamic walker, with swing leg dynamics and three adjustable input parameters, is used to study how motor regulation affects frontal plane stepping. Motivated by experimental observations and phenomenological models, we imposed task-level multiobjective regulation targeting the walker's optimal lateral foot placement at each step. The regulator prioritizes achieving step width and lateral body position goals to varying degrees by choosing a mixture parameter. Our model thus integrates a lateral mechanical template, which captures fundamental mechanics of frontal-plane walking, with a lateral motor regulation template, an empirically verified model of how humans manipulate lateral foot placements in a goal-directed manner. The model captures experimentally observed stepping fluctuation statistics and demonstrates how linear empirical models of stepping dynamics can emerge from first-principles nonlinear mechanics. We find that task-level regulation gives rise to a goal equivalent manifold in the system's extended state space of mechanical states and inputs, a subset of which contains a continuum of period-1 gaits forming a semistable set: perturbations off of any of its gaits result in transients that return to the set, though typically to different gaits.

Abstract:SUMMARY Stability, high response quality and rapidity are required for reactive omnidirectional walking in humanoids. Early schemes focused on generating gaits for predefined footstep locations and suffered from the risk of falling over because they lacked the ability to suitably adapt foot placement. Later methods combining stride adaptation and center of mass (COM) trajectory modification experienced difficulties related to increasing computing loads and an unwanted bias from the desired commands. In this paper, a hierarchical planning framework is proposed in which the footstep adaption task is separated from that of COM trajectory generation. A novel omnidirectional vehicle model and the inequalities deduced therefrom are adopted to describe the inter-pace connection relationship. A constrained nonlinear optimization problem is formulated and solved based on these inequalities to generate the optimal strides. A black-box optimization problem is then constructed and solved to determine the model constants using a surrogate-model-based approach. A simulation-based verification of the method and its implementation on a physical robot with a strictly limited computing capacity are reported. The proposed method is found to offer improved response quality while maintaining rapidity and stability, to reduce the online computing load required for reactive walking and to eliminate unnecessary bias from walking intentions.

Abstract:Principle Equation of Motion (for walkers) is derived that later results in introducing two piecewise-continuous dynamical systems namely Simplified Walking Model (SWM) and Complete Walking Model (CWM) which both describe the behavior of walker with emphasis on the motion in horizontal plane. By making some realistic assumptions based on human natural walking, a simplified equation of motion named Step-to-Step Equation of Walking is formulated. By imposing repetition condition on this equation, we reach to a significant finding named Simple and Compound Motion Cycles as general solutions of steady walking. Among motion cycles, Simple Forward Motion Cycle represents normal walking pattern. These cycles have marginal stability that in practice cause the motion to diverge exponentially even under slight disturbance. By defining stabilization of walking as guidance of a motion initiated from arbitrary initial states to a desired motion cycle and controlling the motion about it, two major strategies are presented for stability control of the walkers; 1) Continuous altering of Center of Pressure (CoP) within support polygon, and 2) Continual planning of the step length and duration. Using these two strategies and based on Simplified Walking Model (SWM), four methods of stability control named generally as Motion Cycle Stabilizers are proposed and their theoretical aspects are inspected. To consider the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed stabilizers on Complete Model of Walking (CWM), some simulations are performed on a physical model with realistic constraints. to overcome the deficiencies of the Stabilizers, method of Optimal Stability Control is proposed to complete the solution. Simulations show that the proposed approach for stabilization of biped walkers provides us with a more robust solution compared to traditional approaches and maximally guarantee the stability of walkers.
