Abstract:A critical factor in industrial production maintenance is decision-making in fault diagnosis. Motor current signature analysis (MCSA) is an established condition-based maintenance method to make fault diagnosis in induction motors (IMs). The occurrence of multiple interacting faults, as well as emergent behaviour, can be tackled efficiently especially when MCSA is combined with distributed problem-solving artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. Therefore, in this study, an intelligent multi-agent system (MAS) is presented to make decisions on the fault conditioning of a three-phase squirrel cage IM. The incorporated agents represent different health conditions of the same IM, with faults that may occur in the rotor bars. All agents utilise an AI method, and use for training MCSA experimental data. A supervisor agent (SA) initially communicates with agents employing feed-forward artificial neural networks trained with the back-propagation algorithm and performs the final fault diagnosis by evaluating their responses. When a decision cannot be made on the fault type, the SA employs another agent that uses the k-nearest neighbour rule. The proposed method achieves high fault diagnosis accuracy. Its performance is also compared with results previously obtained from the same motor when an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system combined with a subtractive clustering method had been used.

Abstract:In this article, two methods for broken bar detection in induction motors are considered and tested using data collected from the LIAS laboratory at the University of Poitiers. The first approach is Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), in which measurements have to be processed in the frequency domain before training the CNN to ensure that the resulting model is physically informed. A double input CNN has been introduced to perform a 100% detection regardless of the speed and load torque value. A second approach is the Principal Components Analysis (PCA), in which the processing is undertaken in the time domain. The PCA is applied on the induction motor currents to eventually calculate the Q statistic that serves as a threshold for detecting anomalies/faults. Even if obtained results show that both approaches work very well, there are major differences that need to be pointed out, and this is the aim of the current paper.

Abstract:Although induction motors (IMs) are robust and reliable electrical machines, they can suffer different faults due to usual operating conditions such as abrupt changes in the mechanical load, voltage, and current power quality problems, as well as due to extended operating conditions. In the literature, different faults have been investigated; however, the broken rotor bar has become one of the most studied faults since the IM can operate with apparent normality but the consequences can be catastrophic if the fault is not detected in low-severity stages. In this work, a methodology based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for automatic detection of broken rotor bars by considering different severity levels is proposed. To exploit the capabilities of CNNs to carry out automatic image classification, the short-time Fourier transform-based time–frequency plane and the motor current signature analysis (MCSA) approach for current signals in the transient state are first used. In the experimentation, four IM conditions were considered: half-broken rotor bar, one broken rotor bar, two broken rotor bars, and a healthy rotor. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposal, achieving 100% of accuracy in the diagnosis task for all the study cases.

Abstract:This paper presents a new rotor fault diagnosis method for induction motors which is based on the double PQ transformation. We construct the PQ transformation matrix with the positive sequence fundamental voltage components and their Hilbert transformation as elements. The active power P and the reactive power Q are obtained through the PQ transformation of the stator currents. As both P and Q are constant for a healthy motor, they are represented by a dot on the PQ plane. Whereas the P and Q for a rotor broken bar motor are represented by an ellipse because they comprise an additional frequency component 2sf s (s is the slip and f s is the supply frequency). Thus, by distinguishing these two different patterns, the rotor broken bar fault is detected. We use the major radius of the ellipse as the fault indicator and the distance between the point of no-load condition and the center of the ellipse on the PQ plane as its normalization value. We thus arrive at the fault severity factor which is fairly independent of the load level and the inertia value of the induction motors. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed method is effective in identifying the rotor-broken-bars fault and at determining the severity of the fault.

Abstract:The data-based machine learning is an important aspect of modern intelligent technology, while Statistical Learning Theory (SLT) is a new tool that studies the machine learning methods in the case of a small number of samples. As a common learning method, Support Vector Machine (SVM) is derived from the SLT. Here we were done some analogical experiments of the rotor broken bar faults of induction motors used, analyzed the signals of the sample currents with Fourier transform, and constructed the spectrum characteristics from low frequency to high frequency used as learning sample vectors for the SVM. After a SVM is trained with learning sample vectors, so each kind of the rotor broken bar faults of induction motors can be classified. Finally the retest is demonstrated, which proves that the SVM really has preferable ability of classification. In this paper we tried applying the SVM to diagnose the faults of induction motors, and the results suggested that the SVM could yet be regarded as a new method in the fault diagnosis.

Abstract:In an induction motor with broken rotor bars, stator currents contain fault-related components. The fault information propagates to voltages when the motor is in a closed-loop control. The control has an effect on the currents and voltages. Relying solely on the currents or voltages is difficult to obtain an accurate detection and quantification of the fault. A new online diagnosis method, which takes both currents and voltages into consideration, is proposed in this study. A fault severity factor is proposed to evaluate the extension of the fault, which is almost independent of the control parameters. Furthermore, the method can be applied to different control strategies. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method have been validated by experimental results.
A Comparative Analysis of Deep Learning Convolutional Neural Network Architectures for Fault Diagnosis of Broken Rotor Bars in Induction Motors

Abstract:Induction machines (IMs) play a critical role in various industrial processes but are susceptible to degenerative failures, such as broken rotor bars. Effective diagnostic techniques are essential in addressing these issues. In this study, we propose the utilization of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for detection of broken rotor bars. To accomplish this, we generated a dataset comprising current samples versus angular position using finite element method magnetics (FEMM) software for a squirrel-cage rotor with 28 bars, including scenarios with 0 to 6 broken bars at every possible relative position. The dataset consists of a total of 16,050 samples per motor. We evaluated the performance of six different CNN architectures, namely Inception V4, NasNETMobile, ResNET152, SeNET154, VGG16, and VGG19. Our automatic classification system demonstrated an impressive 99% accuracy in detecting broken rotor bars, with VGG19 performing exceptionally well. Specifically, VGG19 exhibited high accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-Score, with values approaching 0.994 and 0.998. Notably, VGG19 exhibited crucial activations in its feature maps, particularly after domain-specific training, highlighting its effectiveness in fault detection. Comparing CNN architectures assists in selecting the most suitable one for this application based on processing time, effectiveness, and training losses. This research suggests that deep learning can detect broken bars in induction machines with accuracy comparable to that of traditional methods by analyzing current signals using CNNs.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel technique for the online detection of broken rotor bar(s) (BRBs) in induction motors, based on the analysis of the air-gap rotational magnetic field (RMF), being it indirectly sensed using the voltages induced in dual search coils installed in several stator regions. The induced voltages allow obtaining three differential voltages which reveal the symmetricity level of the mentioned field along the stator circumference. Under the presence of the broken bar(s), the RMF is disturbed by the rotor magneto-motive force, being these disturbances detected through the fundamental components of the differential voltages using a new time-domain analysis technique. The proposed diagnostic approach is verified by finite-element analysis and also by several experimental tests. A high sensitivity, robustness in the face of unbalanced voltage sources and motor load level variations are the main advantages of the proposed technique. Moreover, it is a secure method for BRB detection, easily implementable in low-cost digital signal processing units.

Abstract:This paper investigates the detection of broken rotor bar in squirrel cage induction motors using a novel approach of randomly positioning a triaxial sensor over the motor surface. This study is conducted on two motors under laboratory conditions, where one motor is kept in a healthy state, and the other is subjected to a broken rotor bar (BRB) fault. The induced electromotive force of the triaxial coils, recorded over ten days with 100 measurements per day, is statistically analyzed. Normality tests and graphical interpretation methods are used to evaluate the data distribution. Parametric and non-parametric approaches are used to analyze the data. Both approaches show that the measurement method is valid and consistent over time and statistically distinguishes healthy motors from those with BRB defects when a reference or threshold value is specified. While the comparison between healthy motors shows a discrepancy, the quantitative analysis shows a smaller estimated difference in mean values between healthy motors than comparing healthy and BRB motors.

Abstract:The diagnosis of AC motor broken rotor bar fault falls into the category of pattern classification in some respects. Support vector machine (SVM) has good performance for classification over small sample set. This paper presents a SVM-based method of fault diagnosis of broken rotor bar in induction motor. As broken rotor bar causes frequency components in stator current power spectra, feature data sets are constructed from power spectra of stator current with a windowing method which reduces the dimension of feature sets efficiently and keeps the fault feature information. Because fault feature frequency varies as load changed in practice, experiments are taken with stable load and with unstable load respectively. Motor rotor conditions tested are health, one broken bar, two neighboring broken bar. Two SVM-based classifiers are constructed; one classifier detects health, one or two broken rotor bar and the second classifier detects fault or health. Experiments show the results are promising for each condition, which means SVM are practical for use to detect broken rotor bar fault. And because the procedures can be finished automatically, it is suitable for online diagnosis system.

Abstract:Broken rotor bars in induction motors can be detected by monitoring any abnormality of the spectrum amplitudes at certain frequencies in the motor-current spectrum. It has been shown that these broken-rotor-bar specific frequencies are located around the fundamental stator current frequency and are termed lower and upper sideband components. Broken-rotor-bar fault-detection schemes should rely on multiple signatures in order to overcome or reduce the effect of any misinterpretation of the signatures that are obscured by factors such as measurement noises and different load conditions. Multiple discriminant analysis (MDA) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) provide appropriate environments to develop such fault-detection schemes because of their multiinput-processing capabilities. This paper describes two fault-detection schemes for a broken-rotor-bar fault detection with a multiple signature processing and demonstrates that the multiple signature processing is more efficient than a single signature processing. The first scheme, which will be named the "monolith scheme," is based on a single large-scale MDA or ANN unit representing the complete operating load-torque region of the motor, while the second scheme, which will be named the "partition scheme," consists of many small-scale MDA or ANN units, each unit representing a particular load-torque operating region. Fault-detection performance comparison between the MDA and the ANN with respect to the two schemes is investigated using the experimental data collected for a healthy and a broken-rotor-bar case. Partition scheme distributes the computational load and complexity of the large-scale single units in a monolith scheme to many smaller units, which results in the increase of the broken-rotor-bar fault-detection performance, as is confirmed with the experimental results

Abstract:In this paper a new integrated diagnostic method based on the current Park's Vector modulus analysis and fuzzy wavelet neural network classifier is proposed for the diagnosis of rotor cage faults in operating three-phase induction motors. Detection of broken rotor bars has long been an important but difficult job in the detection area of induction motor faults. The characteristic frequency components of a faulted rotor in the stator current spectrum are very close to the power frequency component but by far less in amplitude, which brings about great difficulty for accurate detection. In order to overcome the shortage of broken rotor bars characteristic components being submerged by the fundamental one in the spectrum of the stator line current, Park's Vector modulus(PVM) analysis is used to detect the occurrence of broken rotor bar faults in our work. Simulation and experimental results are presented to show the merits of this novel approach for the detection of cage induction motor broken rotor bars.

Abstract:The induction machine plays a vital role in industries. Induction machine failure causes significant process delays, higher maintenance expenses, and income loss. The machine's predictive maintenance becomes crucial to find the primary cause of the defect. This paper focuses on the experimental results of induction machines used in the cement industry. Motor Current Signature Analysis is used to analyze the condition of rotor bars due to distorted input supply causing harmonics. The significance of this test is to determine the primary cause of the unexpected failure. The experimental results of the machine reveal distorted input with harmonics resulting in torque ripples. This might lead to broken rotor bars in the rotor cage with sidebands resulting in poor efficiency of the machine. Motor Current Signature Analysis predicts the lifespan of the machine to avoid unexpected failure. The Finite Element Method is used to design the machine for conditions one, two adjacent, and two non-adjacent broken rotor bars to observe the dynamics of rotor bar currents with numerical results. After a substantial overhaul of the machine, the proposed method is again performed, resulting in improved machine efficiency of 88.83%.

Abstract:Three-phase induction motors are widely used in different applications in the industry due to their robustness, low cost, and reliability. Untimely identification and correct diagnosis of incipient faults reduce cost and improve the maintenance management of these machines. This paper explores a new method for robust classification of rotor failures in three-phase induction motors (MITs) connected directly to the electrical network, operating in a steady-state, under unbalanced voltages and load conditions. Through an innovative methodology, an analysis of the electrical current signals from 1 hp and 2 hp motors in the frequency domain was performed. Such analysis was applied in constructing input matrices for a Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network (MLPNN) to detect faults. Furthermore, this methodology proved to be robust because the samples of the failing and healthy motors include voltage unbalance conditions in the electrical supply and a significant variation in the load applied to the motor shaft. Such load variation was used for the detection of failures of 1, 2, and 4 broken bars consecutively on the rotor and in the condition of 2 broken bars and 2 other broken bars diametrically opposite. The results were promising and were obtained using 847 real samples from an experimental bench used to construct the neural model and its respective validation.

Abstract:A modeling and simulation study is presented to investigate the behavior of a squirrel cage induction motor under rotor internal faults. In this paper, a simple approach for modeling of induction machines under rotor internal faults (broken bar and broken end ring) is developed. This model is represented as a system of differential equations. The actual rotor structure is taken into account in this model. And a d-q model is used to describe the 3-phase symmetrical winding stator instead of phase model. Rotor fault is considered by a so-called connectivity matrix. Abstract:The fault of broken rotor bars in a three-phase induction motor is diagnosed by using the wavelet multi-resolution analysis in this paper. Daubechies wavelet is selected as the wavelet base, and the wavelet coefficient is obtained from the wavelet transform of the current signal of the faulty induction motor. The wavelet reconstruction of a single branch is then processed. This is the signal in each frequency branch as a function of time. A rotor fault in the induction motor is clearly identified from the distinguishing current characteristics on the high frequency branch, compared with the no fault condition.

Abstract:A new rotor broken bar fault diagnosis method for induction motors based on the double PQ transformation is presented. By distinguishing the different patterns of the PQ components in the PQ plane, the rotor broken bar fault can be detected. The magnitude of power component directly resulted from rotor fault is used as the fault indicator and the distance between the point of no-load condition and the center of the ellipse as its normalization value. Based on these, the fault severity factor which is completely independent of the inertia and load level is defined. Moreover, a method to reliably discriminate between rotor faults and periodic load fluctuation is presented. Experimental results from a 4 kW induction motor demonstrated the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:A neural network-based incipient fault detector for small and medium-size induction motors is developed. The detector avoids the problems associated with traditional incipient fault detection schemes by employing more readily available information such as rotor speed and stator current. The neural network design is evaluated in real time in the laboratory on a 3/4 hp permanent magnet induction motor. The results of this evaluation indicate that the neural-network-based incipient fault detector provides a satisfactory level of accuracy, greater than 95%, which is suitable for real-world applications. >

Abstract:As induction motor is one of the most preponderant driving equipment in modern industrial systems, timely detection and maintenance of motor failures can efficaciously circumvent economic losses and catastrophic accidents. Though vast majority of machinery fault diagnosis approaches are based on vibration analysis, there may be circumstances that it is impossible to install vibratory sensors in some sophisticated equipment or harsh environments. In view of this, a fault diagnosis method for induction motor based on multiscale acoustic entropy feature selection and hierarchical adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (HANFIS) with localized recurrent input is presented in this article. First, multiscale entropy features, which can reflect the health state of the running motor, are extracted from the collected acoustic signals. Subsequently, to avoid the dimensionality disaster problem and remove irrelevant features, the Relief-F algorithm is used for feature selection. Next, based on the fuzzy formalisms, a newly designed HANFIS is utilized for motor fault identification, where the localized recurrent input mechanism allows for injecting important features again into the model to prevent it from forgetting significant discriminative information, to further promote the overall diagnostic accuracy. Finally, experiments on two acoustic datasets of induction motor and comparisons with existing approaches sufficiently verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper proposes the use of mean absolute difference (MAD) technique to perform broken rotor bar fault defection in induction motors. Feature extraction is performed on several motor current frequency components according to different load conditions in order to obtain meaningful feature vectors for broken rotor bar fault detection purposes. The MAD between the predetermined reference vector and the feature vector extracted from the input current spectrum is used to determine whether the motor has fault or not. The MAD approach is simple and can be effectively used for broken rotor fault detection, provided that appropriate feature vector for fault information is used. Experimental results show that the proposed method effectively detects the broken rotor bar faults under different load conditions.
