Abstract:Purpose: Daily consumption of food and drink creates rapid temperature changes in the oral cavity. Heat transfer and thermal stress caused by temperature changes in restored teeth may damage the hard and soft tissue components, resulting in restoration failure. This study evaluates the temperature distribution and related thermal stress on mandibular molar teeth restored via three indirect restorations using three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA). Materials and methods: A 3D finite element model was constructed of a mandibular first molar and included enamel, dentin, pulp, surrounding bone, and indirect class 2 restorations of type 2 dental gold alloy, ceramic, and composite resin. A transient thermal FEA was performed to investigate the temperature distribution and the resulting thermal stress after simulated temperature changes from 36°C to 4 or 60°C for a 2-second time period. Results: The restoration models had similar temperature distributions at 2 seconds in both the thermal conditions. Compared with 60°C exposure, the 4°C condition resulted in thermal stress values of higher magnitudes. At 4ºC, the highest stress value observed was tensile stress (56 to 57 MPa), whereas at 60°C, the highest stress value observed was compressive stress (42 to 43 MPa). These stresses appeared at the cervical region of the lingual enamel. The thermal stress at the restoration surface and resin cement showed decreasing order of magnitude as follows: composite > gold > ceramic, in both thermal conditions. Conclusions: The properties of the restorative materials do not affect temperature distribution at 2 seconds in restored teeth. The pulpal temperature is below the threshold for vital pulp tissue (42ºC). Temperature changes generate maximum thermal stress at the cervical region of the enamel. With the highest thermal expansion coefficient, composite resin restorations exhibit higher stress patterns than ceramic and gold restorations.
Sexual risk taking and club drug use across three age cohorts of HIV-positive gay and bisexual men in New York City

Abstract:Abstract This study examined club drug use (i.e., cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine, gamma-hydroxybutyrate [GHB], and methamphetamine) and unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) in an ethnically and racially diverse sample of 166 New York City-based seropositive, club drug-using, gay and bisexual men, ages 19–61, and considered these behaviors in relation to age category (20s, 30s, and 40 +) and number of years living with HIV. Club drug use was common across all age categories, with differences arising only in the type of club drug used. Multivariate logistic regression modeling indicated older participants (30s and 40 +) were more likely to use cocaine and methamphetamine and less likely to use GHB and ketamine than those in their 20s. We examined UAI with casual partners in relation to age category, the number of years living with HIV, and club drug use. The likelihood of engaging in UAI with seronegative casual partners was greater among those in their 20s than those in their 30s or 40+. Further, participants were equally likely to engage in unprotected receptive anal intercourse and unprotected insertive anal intercourse with each casual partner serostatus type. With regard to number of years living with HIV, those living longer with the disease were more likely to report UAI with casual partners with a seropositive status than with a negative or unknown serostatus. Our findings suggest that UAI and club drug use is common among seropositive gay and bisexual men regardless of age category, but that differential patterns of risk emerge in relation to the number of years one has been living with HIV and age. These findings are of significance as both the aging population of seropositive gay and bisexual men and HIV infection rates continue to grow, and demonstrate a need for differentiated and tailored prevention strategies across the age continuum.

Abstract:Background: To evaluate the thermal insulation of protective liners and glass ionomer cement during light-curing procedures. Material and methods: Human third molars underwent Class I preparations with dimensions 5 mm long × 4 mm wide × 4 mm deep in a standardized manner ensured a consistent ±0.5 mm dentin thickness at the pulpal floor. The teeth were attached to a customized oral cavity chamber simulator with a circulating bath at a standardized temperature of 34.2 ± 1oC. The temperature variations at the pulpal floor were captured in real-time by video using an infrared thermal camera (FLIR ONE Pro, FLIR Systems). The materials evaluated were: Dycal (Dentsply), TheraCal LC (Bisco), Activa (Pulpdent), and Fuji II LC (GC). All light-activation procedures were performed with the same light-curing unit (Valo Grand, Ultradent) in standard mode, 1000 mW/cm2, and time of exposure following manufacturer instructions. A power analysis was conducted to determine the sample size considering a minimal power of 0.8, with α=0.05. Statistical analyses were performed using ANOVA and Tukey's test for multiple comparisons. Results: The temperature at the pulpal floor increased above the 5.5 ºC safety threshold difference for clinical scenarios tested. None of the materials provided proper thermal insulation for light-curing procedures (p = 0.25). The higher the number of light-cured steps, the longer the pulp remained above the 5.5 ºC temperature threshold. Conclusions: The materials tested provided improper thermal insulation (Δ > 5.5 ºC). Thus, prolonged or multiple light-curing exposures can be harmful to the pulp tissues. Therefore, for indirect pulpal capping procedures, self-cured materials or a reduced number of steps requiring light curing must be adopted to reduce the amount of time the pulp remains above the 5.5 ºC safety temperature threshold. Abstract:SUMMARY The rise in temperature in pulp tissues is related not only to heat transfer by high-irradiance light-curing units (LCUs), but also to restorative procedures. This research aimed to compare the rise in pulp temperature (PT) induced by three LCUs at each restorative step while considering the influence of resin composite shade and thickness. To accomplish this, the investigators used a proposed experimental model replicating pulp fluid circulation with a controlled, simulated intraoral temperature in bovine incisors. The recorded external and internal PT ranged from 36.7°C to 37.1°C and 32.7°C to 33.0°C, respectively. A significant decrease of internal temperature was recorded during class V preparation, followed by a progressive and representative rise of temperature in the subsequent restorative steps. The temperature was significantly higher during light curing of the adhesive system using Valo compared to light curing using Elipar and Radii Cal. However, none of the analyzed devices produced a temperature that exceeded the pulp tolerance limit (a temperature increase over 5.5°C). The paired test showed no significant difference in pulp temperature associated with the thickness of the increment of resin composite. However, shade was found to have more influence on the amount of energy absorbed by pulp tissue—A1 samples showed significantly higher temperature variation compared to samples using the A4 shade of resin composite. To conclude, the microcirculation and the performance of procedures under constant air-water flux dissipate the heat absorbed by the pulp. Additionally, the data suggest that all three LCUs analyzed can be safely used in clinical procedures, and that the resin composite shade may influence the amount of irradiance delivered to the tooth surface and represents a significant factor in pulp temperature variance.

Thermal Effects on Dental Pulp during Laser-Assisted Bleaching Procedures with Diode Lasers in a Clinical Study

Abstract:Background In the current cosmetics industry, bleaching is often associated with lasers. However, such treatment also harbors risks. Tooth death is observed at pulpal temperature increases ≥5.6 °C. Therefore, it seems important to investigate the effects of using different lasers. The aim of this study was to determine pulpal temperature increases at different laser parameters during bleaching by modeling a realistic environment and to compare the temperature recording using a thermocouple and thermal camera. The authors assumed that there are laser settings for the lasers used at which the pulpal temperature increases are <5.6 °C and that the temperature recordings with thermocouples and thermal cameras differ only minimally. Methods Human teeth were used, which were extracted for dental reasons. During experiment, teeth were bleached conventionally and by laser activation at 940 nm, 445 nm, and 970 nm. The temperature in the pulp was recorded using thermocouples. In a second setup, longitudinally halved teeth were bleached, while the temperature in the pulp was recorded with a thermocouple and thermal camera. Descriptive statistics were used. The significance level is 0.05. Results In addition to conventional bleaching, temperature increases <5.6 °C were observed for bleaching at 940 nm 1.5 W, at 445 nm 0.3 W, and at 970 nm 0.5 W. For bleaching procedures using 940 nm 7 W, 940 nm 2 W, 445 nm 0.5 W, and 970 nm 1 W, the temperature increase was ≥5.6 °C. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in the maximum temperature increases (°C) between all groups. Temperature recordings using a thermocouple and thermal camera differed by about 2.3 °C. The working hypotheses were confirmed. Conclusion With laser bleaching, attention must be paid to the type of laser, its power, and the time in order to avoid excessive overheating of the dental pulp.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To assess longitudinal associations between dietary fat and incident age-related maculopathy (ARM) in an older, population-based, historical cohort. METHODS A total of 3654 persons, 49 years or older, participated in the Blue Mountains Eye Study (1992-1994); 2335 (75.1% of survivors) were reexamined after 5 years (1997-1999). Dietary data were collected from 2895 people (79%) at baseline by means of a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire to calculate dietary fat intakes. Presence of ARM was graded from retinal photographs (Wisconsin ARM Grading System). Logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, vitamin C intake, and smoking. RESULTS Participants with the highest vs lowest quintiles of n-3 polyunsaturated fat intake had lower risk of incident early ARM (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 0.41 [0.22-0.75). A 40% reduction of incident early ARM was associated with fish consumption at least once a week (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 0.58 [0.37-0.90]), whereas fish consumption at least 3 times per week could reduce the incidence of late ARM (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 0.25 [0.06-1.00]). We found no association between incident ARM and butter, margarine, or nut consumption. CONCLUSIONS A regular diet high in n-3 polyunsaturated fat, especially from fish, suggests protection against early and late ARM in this older Australian cohort. Our study could not confirm deleterious effects of higher polyunsaturated fat intakes reported by other clinic-based studies.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to assess and regulate heat generation in the dental pulp cavity and circumambient temperature around a tooth during laser ablation with a femtosecond laser in a confined space.BACKGROUND DATA:The automatic tooth preparing technique is one of the traditional oral clinical technology innovations. In this technique, a robot controlled an ultrashort pulse laser to automatically complete the three-dimensional teeth preparing in a confined space. The temperature control is the main measure for protecting the tooth nerve.METHODS:Ten tooth specimens were irradiated with a femtosecond laser controlled by a robot in a confined space to generate 10 teeth preparation. During the process, four thermocouple sensors were used to record the pulp cavity and circumambient environment temperatures with or without air cooling. A statistical analysis of the temperatures was performed between the conditions with and without air cooling (p < 0.05).RESULTS:The recordings showed that the temperature with air cooling was lower than that without air cooling and that the heat generated in the pulp cavity was lower than the threshold for dental pulp damage.CONCLUSIONS:These results indicate that femtosecond laser ablation with air cooling might be an appropriate method for automatic tooth preparing.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: To quantify the biomechanical properties of the bovine periodontal ligament (PDL) in postmortem sections and to apply these properties to study orthodontic tooth intrusion using finite element analysis (FEA). We hypothesized that PDL's property inherited heterogeneous (anatomical dependency) and nonlinear stress-strain behavior that could aid FEA to delineate force vectors with various rectangular archwires. Materials and Methods: A dynamic mechanical analyzer was used to quantify the stress-strain behavior of bovine PDL. Uniaxial tension tests using three force levels (0.5, 1, and 3 N) and samples from two anatomical locations (circumferential and longitudinal) were performed to calculate modulus. The Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic (MRH) model was applied to the experimental data and used in an FEA of orthodontic intrusion rebounded via a 0.45-mm step bend with three archwire configurations of two materials (stainless steel and TMA). Results: Force levels and anatomical location were statistically significant in their effects on modulus (P < .05). The apical part had a greater stiffness than did the middle part. The MRH model was found to approximate the experimental data well (r = 0.99), and it demonstrated a reasonable stress-strain outcome within the PDL and bone for FEA intrusion simulation. The force acting on the tooth increased five times from the 0.016 × 0.022-inch TMA to the 0.019 × 0.025-inch stainless steel. Conclusions: The PDL is a nonhomogeneous tissue in which the modulus changed in relation to location. PDL nonlinear constitutive model estimated quantitative force vectors for the first time to compare intrusive tooth movement in 3-D space in response to various rectangular archwires.
Effect of temperature on dynamic compressive behavior of periodontal ligament

Abstract:Periodontal ligament (PDL) attaches tooth root to the surrounding bone. Its existence between tooth and jaw bone is of utmost importance due to its significant role in absorbing and distributing physiological and para-physiological loading. According to the previous studies, various mechanical tests have been performed to characterize the mechanical properties of the PDL; however, all of them have been done at room temperature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in which the testing was performed at body temperature. The present research was planned to measure the dependency of PDL's viscoelastic behavior on temperature and frequency. Three different temperatures, including body and room temperature, were opted to perform the dynamic compressive tests of the bovine PDL. In addition, a Generalized Maxwell model (GMM) was presented based on empirical outcomes. At 37 °C, amounts of loss factor were found to be greater than those in 25 °C, which demonstrates that the viscous phase of the PDL in higher temperatures plays a critical role. Likewise, by raising the temperature from 25 °C to 37 °C, the model parameters show an enlargement in the viscous part and lessening in the elastic part. It was concluded that the PDL's viscosity in body temperature is much higher than that in room temperature. This model would be functional for a more accurate computational analysis of the PDL at the body temperature (37 °C) in various loading conditions such as orthodontic simulations, mastication, and impact.
The accuracy of using guided endodontics in access cavity preparation and the temperature changes of root surface: An in vitro study

Abstract:Background: Guided endodontics is a successful technique that has been gradually applied to endodontic therapy in recent years without being affected by the operator's experience. However, the guided bur produces excessive heat during continuous rotation and friction with root canal walls, it is not clear whether the degree of temperature increase may lead to the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone damage. Methods: A total of 58 teeth were used, of which 40 teeth were not grouped, all used to evaluate the accuracy. 40 single-rooted premolars were scanned using CBCT and an intra-oral scanner, and 3D-printed guided plates were made with the pre-designed access. A custom-made guided bur was used to prepare the access cavities. The postoperative CBCT data and pre-designed pathways were matched to evaluate the deviation between the planned and virtual paths. The other 18 teeth were randomly divided into three groups (ET20 and ProTaper F3 as the control group, guided endodontics as the test group), with 6 teeth in each group. The temperature changes on the root surfaces were inspected with a thermocouple thermometer. Results: The average deviation on the tip and the base of the bur was 0.30 mm and 0.28 mm (mesial/distal), and 0.28 mm and 0.25 mm (buccal/lingual). The average angle deviation was 3.62°. The mean root surface temperature rise of the guided endodontics group was the lowest (5.07 °C) (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The access cavity preparation performed with guided endodontics has feasible accuracy and low-temperature rise on the root surfaces. Due to the limitations of the study, whether it has high reliability and safety in clinical applications needs to be further studied in vivo.

Abstract:Abstract Background Preheating is one of several innovative approaches and improvements developed to increase the durability and clinical behavior of resin composites. Development of preheated composites is to reduce its viscosity in order to improve resin composite adaptation and placement ease. The purpose of this clinical trial was to study the effect of preheating Bis-GMA free and Bis-GMA-containing resin composites at different temperatures on the pulpal floor and restoration temperature. A total of twenty individuals (N = 40) have two carious posterior teeth that need to be restored were randomly assigned to one of two groups based on the type of restorative materials used: (group 1) Bis-GMA-containing resin composite VisCalor bulk (VCB), and (group 2) Bis-GMA-free resin composite Admira Fusion x-tra (AFX). Preheating temperatures of 50 °C and 70 °C were utilized to separate each group into two subgroups. Class I or II cavities were prepared. Thermometer device with two separate K-type temperature probes was used to measure the base line temperature values at the pulpal floor before beginning the restorative procedure (C 0 ) , pulpal floor during packing of preheated composite (C 1 ) , the top composite surface after packing and before curing (C 2 ) , pulpal floor after curing of the preheated composite (C 3 ) , and top composite surface after curing (C 4 ) . One-way ANOVA and the Kruskal–Wallis test were used to analyze the data. Results The measured temperature of pulpal floor for both preheated VCB or AFX at 50 °C or 70 °C revealed significant increasing from base line measured temperature to during packing as well as after curing with ( P -value < 0.001). There was no significant difference for mean composite surface temperature for both preheated materials at 50 °C or 70 °C whether before or after curing. Conclusions Preheating of bulk fill Bis-GMA free and containing resin composite rises both the pulpal floor and the restoration temperature; meanwhile, the rise in temperature was limited. The application of the curing unit caused the greatest temperature rise.

Abstract:This in vitro study assessed peak temperature and temperature increase (Δ T ) within the pulp chamber during different extended photoactivation techniques (EPT—applying similar radiant exposure values) to resin-based composites (RBCs) placed in a Class I cavity preparation in an extracted human lower third molar. A T-type thermocouple was placed in the pulp chamber and connected to a temperature analysis device (Thermes, Physitemp). The tooth was attached to an assembly simulating the in vivo environment (controlled baseline pulp chamber temperature and fluid flow). The real-time pulp chamber temperature was evaluated throughout the photoactivation (Bluephase N, Ivoclar Vivadent) of two bulk-fill RBCs: Tetric N Ceram Bulk Fill (TBF; shade: IVA; Ivoclar Vivadent); Surefill SDR flow + (SDR, shade: Universal; Dentsply Sirona), which were exposed to different curing techniques: 40 s-occlusal surface; 20 s-occlusal + 10 s-buccal + 10 s-lingual surfaces; 10 s-buccal + 10 s + lingual + 20 s-occlusal surfaces. Each EPT delivered 42.4 J/cm 2 . Vickers hardness (VHN) was measured on the removed, sectioned RBC restorations at the top and bottom middle areas after curing. Δ T and VHN data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni post-hoc test ( α = 0.05). Peak temperature data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Dunnett's post-hoc test ( α = 0.05). SDR showed higher Δ T values than TBF ( p = 0.008) in some EPTs. Neither technique resulted in Δ T values greater than 5.5 °C. Both composites had acceptable bottom/top hardness ratios (greater than 80%), regardless of the photoactivation technique. The evaluated EPTs may be considered safe as a low-temperature increase was noticed within the pulp chamber.
Thermal transfer in extracted incisors during thermal pulp sensitivity testing

Abstract:Aim: To measure the temperature distribution within tooth structure during and after application of thermal stimuli used during pulp sensitivity testing. Methodology: Extracted intact human maxillary anterior teeth were investigated for temperature changes at the labial enamel, the dentino-enamel junction (DEJ) and pulpal surface during and after a 5-s application of six different thermal stimuli: hot water (80 degrees C), heated gutta-percha (140 degrees C), carbon dioxide dry ice (-72 degrees C), refrigerant spray (-50 degrees C), ice stick (0 degrees C) and cold water (2 degrees C). J-type thermocouples and heat conduction paste were used to detect temperature changes, together with a data acquisition system (Labview). Data were analysed using analysis of variance, with a confidence level of P < 0.05. Results: Temperature change was detected more quickly at the DEJ and pulpal surface with the application of hot water, heated gutta-percha and refrigerant spray than with carbon dioxide dry ice and ice (P < 0.05). Cold water and refrigerant spray were in the same range in terms of time to detect temperature change at both the DEJ and pulpal surface. Thermal stimuli with greater temperature difference from tooth temperature created a greater thermal gradient initially, followed by a greater temperature change at the DEJ and the pulpal surface. In this regard, ice and cold water were weaker stimuli than others (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Thermal stimuli used in pulp testing are highly variable in terms of temperature of the stimulus, rate of thermal transfer to the tooth and extent of temperature change within tooth structure. Overall, dry ice and refrigerant spray provide the most consistent stimuli, whereas heated gutta-percha and hot water were highly variable. Ice was a weak stimulus.

Abstract:Introduction Finite element (FE) method has been used to calculate stress in the periodontal ligament (PDL), which is crucial in orthodontic tooth movement. The stress depends on the PDL material property, which varies significantly in previous studies. This study aimed to determine the effects of different PDL properties on stress in PDL using FE analysis. Methods A 3-dimensional FE model was created consisting of a maxillary canine, its surrounding PDL, and alveolar bone obtained from cone-beam computed tomography scans. One Newton of intrusion force was applied vertically to the crown. Then, the hydrostatic stress and the von Mises stress in the PDL were computed using different PDL material properties, including linear elastic, viscoelastic, hyperelastic, and fiber matrix. Young's modulus (E), used previously from 0.01 to 1000 MPa, and 3 Poisson's ratios, 0.28, 0.45, and 0.49, were simulated for the linear elastic model. Results The FE analyses showed consistent patterns of stress distribution. The high stresses are mostly concentrated at the apical area, except for the linear elastic models with high E (E >15 MPa). However, the magnitude varied significantly from −14.77 to −127.58 kPa among the analyzed patients. The E-stress relationship was not linear. The Poisson's ratio did not affect the stress distribution but significantly influenced the stress value. The hydrostatic stress varied from −14.61 to −95.48 kPa. Conclusions Different PDL material properties in the FE modeling of dentition do not alter the stress distributions. However, the magnitudes of the stress significantly differ among the patients with the tested material properties.

Occurrence and clinical correlates of psychiatric comorbidity in patients with psychotic disorders.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to explore patterns and clinical correlates of psychiatric comorbidity in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and mood spectrum disorders with psychotic features. METHOD Ninety-six consecutively hospitalized patients with current psychotic symptoms were recruited and included in this study. Index episode psychotic diagnosis and psychiatric comorbidity were assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R-Patient Version (SCID-P). Psychopathology was assessed by the SCID-P, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms, and Hopkins Symptom Checklist. Awareness of illness was assessed with the Scale to Assess Unawareness of Mental Disorders. RESULTS The total lifetime prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity in the entire cohort was 57.3% (58.1% in schizophrenia spectrum disorders and 56.9% in mood spectrum psychoses). Overall, panic disorder (24%), obsessive-compulsive disorder (24%), social phobia (17.7%), substance abuse (11.5%), alcohol abuse (10.4%), and simple phobia (7.3%) were the most frequent comorbidities. Within the group of mood spectrum disorders, negative symptoms were found to be more frequent among patients with psychiatric comorbidity than among those without comorbidity, while such a difference was not detected within the group of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Social phobia, substance abuse disorder, and panic disorder comorbidity showed the greatest association with psychotic features. An association between earlier age at first hospitalization and comorbidity was found only in patients with unipolar psychotic depression. Patient self-reported psychopathology was more severe in schizophrenia spectrum patients with comorbidity than in those without, while such a difference was less pronounced in mood spectrum psychoses. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that psychiatric comorbidity is a relevant phenomenon in psychoses and is likely to negatively affect the phenomenology of psychotic illness. Further studies in larger psychotic populations are needed to gain more insight into the clinical and therapeutic implications of psychiatric comorbidity in psychoses.
The role of Aktand RAFTK in beta1 integrin mediated survival of precursor B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells.

Abstract:In this study, we report that the related adhesion focal tyrosine kinase RAFTK, is an upstream kinase in beta1 integrin mediated activation of Akt. Stimulation through beta1 integrins by fibronectin reversed apoptosis induced by adriamycin. Inhibitors of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3 kinase)/Akt (LY 294002), tyrosine kinases (Herbimycin-A) and the cytotoxic agent adriamycin induced apoptosis of REH cells. beta1 integrin ligation induced activation of Akt, and tyrosine phosphorylation of RAFTK and FAK, but not SYK in REH cells. This suggested that RAFTK and FAK activation might be linked to Akt activation. Evidence that RAFTK is a modulator of Akt came from phorbol myristic acetate (PMA) stimulation. RAFTK and Akt were activated but FAK was not. Using fibroblasts from FAK -/- mice, which express high levels of RAFTK, fibronectin plating enhanced Akt activation. Pretreatment of REH cells with a P13 kinase/Akt inhibitor LY 294002 did not inhibit RAFTK tyrosine phosphorylation showing that RAFTK is upstream of P13k/Akt. Further evidence for a link between RAFTK tyrosine phosphorylation and Akt activation was the observation that the p85 subunit of P13 kinase associated with RAFTK following integrin ligation in REH cells. These results suggest that RAFTK plays an anti-apoptotic role through the activation of Akt.

Abstract:TIGRIsat is the first Iraqi satellite. It has been launched on June 19th 2014, becoming the first Iraqi satellite. The small spacecraft is a 3 Unit CubeSat nanosatellite, weighting under 4 kg and carrying a camera for monitoring dust and sand storms over Iraq. TIGRIsat has been built by Iraqi post-graduate students within a bilateral Italian-Iraqi collaboration. The payload of the satellite has been designed to target an area covering all the surface of Iraq, and producing images which will be transmitted to the ground stations and processed to identify sand and dust storms occurring in that area.

Abstract:Background/purpose: Effective filling of the lateral canals is of great significance in successful root canal treatment, but it is generally being challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of relative positions of the heat carrier and lateral canal opening on guttapercha obturation of lateral canals in a three-dimensional (3D)-printed model.Materials and methods: Thermal conductivity and real-time temperature transmission of gutta-percha were investigated using laser flash and thermal infrared analyses. 3D-printed root canal models with lateral canals at 1, 3, and 5 mm from the apex were fabricated, and different relative positions of the heat carrier were tested. The obturation process was recorded on video, and the obturation depth of the lateral canals was observed using X-ray micro-computed tomography.Results: Gutta-percha showed low thermal conductivity of 1.07 W/(m$K), and heating increased the temperature of gutta-percha above 60 degrees C only within 1 mm beyond the heat carrier tip. For lateral canals at 1 and 3 mm from the apex, gutta-percha penetrated further with deeper penetration of the heat carrier (P < 0.05). For 5-mm lateral canals, the heat carrier was always at apical level and the gutta-percha obturation depth was more at 2 mm apically than at 3 or 4 mm (P < 0.05).

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate marginal integrity of restorations applied with preheated and non-preheated composite, flowable composite, sonically activated composite, and a new thermo-viscous bulk-fill composite using near-infrared technology for preheating, in class V cavities of human molars. Materials and methods: Standardized cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of 60 human mandibular molars and restored with one of the following resin composite materials after application of an etch-and-rinse adhesive (OptiBond FL, Kerr): non-preheated or preheated conventional composite (Filtek Supreme XTE, 3M Oral Care), preheated thermo-viscous composite (VisCalor bulk, Voco), soncially activated composite (SonicFill 3, Kerr), or flowable composite (Filtek Supreme XTE Flowable, 3M Oral Care) applied in bulk or as a lining material using the snow-plow technique. After light curing and polishing, the percentage of continuous margins (PCM) of the restorations in enamel and dentin was assessed using SEM both before and after thermomechanical loading (TML). TML was carried out with 3000 thermal cycles (5°C-50°C) and a simultaneous mechanical stress application with 1.2 million load-cycles (1.7 Hz, 49 N) in a computer-controlled masticator. Non-parametric statistical analysis was performed using Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U-tests (α = 0.05). Results: All groups revealed a significant decline in marginal integrity after TML in both enamel and dentin. Although the flowable group in enamel and the snow-plow group in dentin showed the highest PCM before TML, the differences between the groups were compensated after TML. Conclusion: All of the tested composites and application methods showed similar marginal integrities after thermomechanical loading and can be recommended for clinical implementation.
