Abstract:ABSTRACTCrosslinked nanocomposite films of sodium alginate (SA) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) with different SiO2 loading values were prepared by in situ synthesis. Biocomposite films were produced by solution casting and solvent evaporation with glycerol as the plasticizer and calcium chloride as the crosslinking agent. The effects of the addition of nano silicon dioxide (nano‐SiO2) in SA on the microstructural, physical, mechanical, and optical properties of the nanocomposite films were characterized. The results show that nano‐SiO2 was dispersed homogeneously in the SA matrix; it thereby formed a strong interfacial interaction between the nano‐SiO2 particles and the matrix. The transparency of the bionanocomposite films was enhanced. Thermogravimetric analysis also revealed that nano‐SiO2 improved the thermal stability of the SA films. The incorporation of SiO2 further reduced the water vapor permeability and swelling degree and significantly increased the tensile strength and elongation, which are parameters important for packaging industries. Finally, the lower light transmission of UV light from 200 to 250 nm indicated that SA/SiO2 nanocomposite films could potentially be used to prevent lipid damage by UV light in food conservation. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biopolymer-Based Films from Sodium Alginate and Citrus Pectin Reinforced with SiO2

Abstract:Blend films based on sodium alginate (SA) and citrus pectin (P) reinforced with different concentrations of SiO2 (0–10% w/w) were developed in this study. From the morphological (SEM) and structural (FT-IR) evaluation, it was verified that the incorporation of the reinforcing agent did not drastically modify the microstructure of the films, nor did new chemical bonds form. However, the XRD results suggested a slight reduction in the crystallinities of the blends by the incorporation of SiO2. Among the formulations prepared, the addition of a 5% reinforcing agent was responsible for the simultaneous improvement of mechanical and barrier properties. Comparing the control sample (SA/P) with the SA/P/5.0%SiO2 film, the tensile strength increased from 27.7 ± 3.7 to 40.6 ± 4.5 MPa, and the water-vapor transmission rate decreased from 319.8 ± 38.7 to 288.9 ± 23.5 g m−2 day−1. Therefore, SiO2, as a reinforcing agent in SA/P blends, represents a simple and effective strategy for improving the properties of biopolymer-based films in applications, such as packaging.

Abstract:<p>Biopolymers have shown great application prospects due to their advantages of being biodegradable, renewable, non-toxic, safe and inexpensive. However, the innate hydrophilicity of biopolymers means the materials prepared from them easily swell or disintegrate in aqueous media, limiting their applications. Herein, on the basis of improving the mechanical performance of a sodium alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol) (SA/PVA) film by introducing palygorskite (Pal) nanorods, the hydrophobicity of the obtained SA/PVA/Pal film was improved further by surface coating with methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) through a vapor deposition-surface polycondensation reaction. MTCS nanofilaments, with a size of approximately 50 nm, were formed on the film surface by the silanization reaction between MTCS and hydroxyls, resulting in an improvement in surface hydrophobicity characterized by a contact angle (111.8°) higher than that of SA/PVA/Pal film (72.7°). Therefore, the obtained films maintained their original shape and strength after soaking for a long time in aqueous solutions containing acid, alkaline, and electrolyte, also in organics, while the uncoated film dissolved quickly and lost its original shape. Moreover, the surface coating also increased the film's tensile strength from 11.43 to 28.69 MPa. This demonstrates a simple, universal and effective way to improve the resistance of biopolymer-derived materials to water and various chemicals.</p>

Study of the structural, optical and electrical properties of PVA/SA performance by incorporating Al2O3 nanoparticles

Abstract:Aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al 2 O 3 NPs) were added to polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium alginate (SA) blend to synthesis nanocomposite films, using a solution casting technique, with favorable optical and electrical properties. The results reveal a series of noteworthy findings, where X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement also shows that the addition of Al 2 O 3 NPs to PVP/SA blend caused a decrease in the crystallinity of the filled samples. Fourier infrared (FTIR) analysis showed prominent characteristic peaks corresponding to vibrational groups characterizing the prepared nanocomposite samples, which change randomly with increasing concentration of Al 2 O 3 NPs. Moreover, the indirect/direct optical energy gap decreased from 3.96/5.28 to 2.73/3.59 eV at 2.0 wt% of Al 2 O 3 NPs, confirming the improvement in the optical features of the doped samples, as evidenced by UV/Vis spectra. After adding the nanoparticles to the blend, AC electrical conductivity increased and showed to follows Jonscher's rule. The maximum value of AC conductivity observed at 2.0 wt% of Al 2 O 3 NPs in the blend is 1.445 10 − 6 S/cm. Additionally, the addition of the nanoparticles has been shown to increase in dielectric loss and dielectric constant of the composite samples. The improvement of the optical and electrical properties due to filling with Al 2 O 3 NPs indicates the possibility of using the prepared nanocomposites in optoelectronic devices. Also, studying the effect of incorporating Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles into PVP/SA blends has attracted little attention in the literature; therefore, this study is considered as a new research one.

Influence of g-C3N4 nanosheets on thermal stability and mechanical properties of biopolymer electrolyte nanocomposite films: a novel investigation

Abstract:A series of sodium alginate (SA) nanocomposite films with different loading levels of graphitic-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were fabricated via the casting technique. The structure and morphology of nanocomposite films were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis results suggested that thermal stability of all the nanocomposite films was enhanced significantly, including initial thermal degradation temperature increased by 29.1 °C and half thermal degradation temperature improved by 118.2 °C. Mechanical properties characterized by tensile testing and dynamic mechanical analysis measurements were also reinforced remarkably. With addition of 6.0 wt % g-C3N4, the tensile strength of SA nanocomposite films was dramatically enhanced by 103%, while the Young's modulus remarkably increased from 60 to 3540 MPa. Moreover, the storage modulus significantly improved by 34.5% was observed at loadings as low as 2.0 wt %. These enhancements were further investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry and real time Fourier transform infrared spectra. A new perspective of balance was proposed to explain the improvement of those properties for the first time. At lower than 1.0 wt % loading, most of the g-C3N4 nanosheets were discrete in the SA matrix, resulting in improved thermal stability and mechanical properties; above 1.0 wt % and below 6.0 wt % content, the aggregation was present in SA host coupled with insufficient hydrogen bondings limiting the barrier for heat and leading to the earlier degradation and poor dispersion; at 6.0 wt % addition, the favorable balance was established with enhanced thermal and mechanical performances. However, the balance point of 2.0 wt % from dynamic mechanical analysis was due to combination of temperature and agglomeration. The work may contribute to a potential research approach for other nanocomposites.

Abstract:Nanoparticles are used as fillers to improve the properties of biopolymers, and their particle size is an important parameter. This work aims to investigate the effect of particle size of isoreticular metal-organic framework-3 (IRMOF-3) on the mechanical, physical, and release properties of sodium alginate (SA)-based composite active film. In our study, IRMOF-3 with six different particle sizes was synthesized by introducing additives. IRMOF-3 loading with carvacrol (IRMOF-3/CA nanoparticles) was incorporated into the SA matrix to prepare the composite film. The characterization and testing results of films showed that the particle size of nanoparticles affected the physical morphology and chemical structure of the film. Especially smaller nanoparticles uniformly dispersed into the SA matrix more easily, forming a denser and more stable spatial network structure with SA, which could more significantly improve the tensile strength, water vapor barrier, and hydrophobic properties of the film ( P < 0.05). In addition, the CA release rate from the active film could be significantly reduced by about 33.90 % even when the smallest particle size of the IRMOF-3/CA nanoparticles was added. Therefore, when IRMOF-3/CA is used as the nano-filler to develop SA-based active film, its particle size has a potential influence on the properties of the film.

Abstract:In this study, citric acid modified cellulose nanocrystals (MCNC) and silica aerogel (SA) were used as reinforcing agents and added to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in different proportions to prepare composite films with excellent mechanical and barrier properties. After modification with citric acid, MCNC successfully contained ester bonds. SEM and FTIR results showed that MCNC and SA were uniformly dispersed in the PVA matrix and formed a compact structure. XRD results showed that there were physical interactions between the reinforcing agents and PVA, which improved the thermal stability of the film. Meanwhile, the composite film obtained good barrier properties after adding 0.5 % MCNC and 1.5 % SA. The carbon dioxide permeability decreased by 66.01 % and the oxygen permeability decreased by 69.46 % (23 °C, 50 % RH) and 40.14 % (38 °C, 90 % RH). The tensile strength increased to 43.79 MPa. Therefore, the composite film can be widely used in the packaging of food, medicine, etc.

Abstract:Calcium alginate fibers and nano-silica/calcium alginate blend fibers were prepared by the mean of wet spinning at the same spinning condition. The effect of nano-particles SiO2 on the structure and properties of alginate fibers were studied via many tests. The results showed that the tenacity of blend fibers increased with the growth of the content of SiO2 ranging from 1% to 5%, however, the tenacity of fibers became worse when the content of SiO2 was more than 5%. The effect of SiO2 content on hardness and tribological properties of the calcium alginate fiber was studied. The morphologies of the fibers surfaces were examined with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The result showed that the surface of blend fibers was still smooth when the consent of SiO2 not up to 7%, the best surface was obtained when SiO2 content was 5%. The incorporation of SiO2 also affected the absorption property of alginate fiber and made it decrease with the increase of SiO2 content. The structures of calcium alginate fibers and nano-silica/calcium alginate blend fibers were studied by infrared spectrum.
Effect of sodium alginate on properties of wheat straw/polylactic acid composites

Abstract:To investigate the effect of sodium alginate (SA) on the properties of wheat straw/polylactic acid (PLA) composites, four kinds of composites with different SA contents (0 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, and 15 wt%)were prepared via injection molding. The mechanical properties, moisture absorption, thermal stability, and infrared spectrum of the four kinds of composites were tested and analyzed, and the microstructure of the tensile section of the composites was observed via scanning electron microscopy. The degradability of the composites was also analyzed. The results showed that the wheat straw/PLA composites with 5% SA had better mechanical properties. Their tensile strength was 15.8%, 5.4%, and 19% higher than those of 0%, 10%, and 15% SA, respectively. The impact strength of the 5% SA composites changed to an acceptable degree relative to the non-SA composites, which had an impact strength of 28% lower than that of 0% SA but 51.9% higher than that of the 15% SA composite. The 5% SA composites had less hygroscopicity and better thermal stability, and adding SA enhanced the degradability of the composites. As the SA content increased, degradability increased greatly.

Abstract:The blend matrix composed of polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethylcellulose (PVA/CMC) was prepared via the casting method. SiO2 nanoparticles were added as reinforcement in different amounts (SiO2 = 1, 2, 3, and 4 wt.%). The study utilized FTIR to examine the alterations in composition and the interplay between the blend matrix and the inclusion of SiO2. Also, for the first time, the surface roughness and surface wettability of the PVA/CMC blend matrix were investigated with the addition of SiO2 using measurements of contact angle and surface roughness parameters. The surface roughness and wettability of the blend matrix increased as the SiO2 content increased. In addition, the blend matrix optical features were determined by the UV–visible spectrophotometer. Based on the analysis using Tauc's relation, it was found that the energy bandgap decreases from 5.52 to 5.17 eV (direct transition) and from 4.79 to 4.32 eV (indirect transition) for the PVA/CMC and PVA/CMC/4%SiO2 blend films, respectively. The refractive index increases from 2.009 to about 2.144 for the PVA/CMC and PVA/CMC/4%SiO2 blend films, respectively. Furthermore, optical conductivity and dielectric constants were improved for the PVA/CMC blend film after the addition of SiO2 nanoparticles.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to prepare sodium alginates (SAs) with different molecular weight and G/M ratio, and characterize their rheological behaviors and emulsifying properties. The result of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) showed that the chemical bonds among the β-d-mannuronic acid- (M-), α-l-guluronic acid- (G-), and MG-sequential blocks in the SA chains were not changed significantly by acid treatment. Meanwhile, the molecular weight and G/M ratio of the SA exhibited drastic variation after acid modification. The result of rheological analysis suggesting that the apparent viscosity of SA reduced from 30 to 16.4 mPa.s with the increase of shear rate, reveals that SA solution belongs to pseudoplastic liquid. Also, the apparent viscosity of acid-modified SA solution dropped rapidly with the decrease of the molecular weight. The properties of emulsions stabilized by SA, SA-Ms, and commercial SAs were evaluated via the interface tensiometry and determination of the zeta potential, droplet size, creaming index (CI), and Turbiscan stability index (TSI). Compared with the SA-stabilized emulsion, the interfacial tension of the emulsion stabilized by SA-M increased with the decrease of the molecular weight reduced at the similar M/G ratio. The decrease in zeta potential and the increase in TSI of the emulsion were observed with the decrease of molecular weight, indicating that molecular weight plays an important role on the emulsifying ability of SA. In addition, the SA with low G/M ratio can form emulsions with stable and fine droplets.

Physical and mechanical properties of water resistant sodium alginate films

Abstract:Properties of sodium alginate films were modified using two different methods of CaCl2 treatment, i.e. the direct addition of CaCl2 into film making solution (mixing films) and the immersion of alginate films into CaCl2 solutions (immersion films), and their treatment effects on tensile strength (TS), percentage elongation at break (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS) of the films were investigated. TS and E of the mixing films were not changed considerably, but those of the immersion films changed considerably with significant (P<0.05) increase in TS and decrease in E. WVP of the immersion films decreased significantly (P<0.05), but that of the mixing films did not decreased. Water resistance measured by WS was not improved with the mixing films, but the alginate films became water resistant when they treated by immersing in higher than 2g/100ml CaCl2 solutions. Water adsorption by the films also decreased in the immersion films. Swelling ratio (SR) of the immersion film decreased with temperature without affecting WS of the films.
Optical, thermal, mechanical, and antibacterial properties of polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate/ZnMn 2 O 4 nanocomposites films for various optical devices and food packaging applications

Abstract:This work involves preparing zinc manganite nanoparticles (ZnMn 2 O 4 NPs) using the Sol-gel method. Polymer nanocomposites of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Sodium alginate (NaAlg)- ZnMn 2 O 4 NPs were created using the solution casting technique. The polymer nanocomposites films were made with varying weight percentages of ZnMn 2 O 4 nanoparticles. With the addition of nanofiller, the reduced direct and indirect energy band gap values and increased Urbach energy values were discovered in the UV–Vis data. XRD data showed a reduction in crystallinity degree with dopant. ZnMn 2 O 4 NPs had a strong interaction with PVA/NaAlg blend, as confirmed by FTIR. The addition of ZnMn 2 O 4 NPs led to improved thermal stability of the polymer nanocomposites films. Additionally, the nanocomposites films' mechanical characteristics were examined. The loading of ZnMn 2 O 4 nanoparticles has been associated with an increasing trend in the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, including its toughness, Young's modulus, Tensile strength (Ts), and elongation. The antibacterial activity of the nanocomposites against fungus and bacteria was studied. Additionally, PVA/NaAlg-ZnMn 2 O 4 nanocomposites films had good antibacterial characteristics against environmental microorganisms such as Gram-positive (G + ) S. aureus and Gram-negative(G − ) E. coli bacteria as well as fungi C. albicans and A. niger . It was observed that the biodegradability of the nanocomposite films was lower compared to the pure PVA/NaAlg film. Compared to pure film, the water solubility was decreased upon the addition of ZnMn 2 O 4 NPs. After ZnMn 2 O 4 was added to the pure blend, the WVTR decreased. The produced polymer nanocomposites films appear to be a promising material for food packing, according to these results.

Abstract:PVA-alginate hydrogel is a promising material for use in biomedical applications due to its desirable characteristics: biocompatible, durable, non-toxic, and low cost. However, the low gel strength of this composite limits its use in biomedical applications. This study aims to develop enhanced mechanical and thermal properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) PVA-alginate composite yarn by adding nanocellulose isolated from the sustainable oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFBs). The PVA-alginate composite yarns reinforced with nanocellulose were prepared with various nanocellulose contents (1 wt.%, 2 wt.%, and 5 wt.%). The composite's tensile strength exhibited an increasing trend with the addition of nanocellulose, while the elongation at break showed the opposite trend. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the composite's thermal degradation shifts to higher temperatures with the addition of nanocellulose. The observed activation energies for the thermal degradation calculated using the Coats-Redfern method exhibited a significant increment for the composites reinforced with nanocellulose. These results show that the addition of nanocellulose into the PVA-alginate matrix enhances the chemical and thermal properties of the resulting hydrogel. All these improvements have resulted from more abundant and robust hydrogen bonds generated by the nanocellulose presence.
Mechanism of the G/M ratio and zein in enhancing the mechanical and hydrophobic properties of sodium alginate films

Abstract:This study developed an edible film based on calcium-crosslinked sodium alginate (SA) using the casting method. The investigation assessed how the α-L-guluronic acid/β-D-mannuronic acid (G/M ratio) and zein addition influence the film's physicochemical properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy findings suggest that the G/M ratio modulates the film's physicochemical characteristics by altering SA molecular cross-linking strength and the film's network structure density. At a G/M ratio of 0.85, the film exhibits a more uniform network structure, enhanced moisture resistance, hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties. Zein, evenly dispersed within the film matrix, establishes strong hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions with SA, enhancing the film's network structure and boosting its thermophysical, mechanical, and moisture resistance characteristics. The study demonstrates that modifying the G/M ratio and incorporating zein enhances the film's mechanical and hydrophobic properties, broadening its potential applications in food packaging.
Effect of Nanosilica on Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of PVA Fiber-Reinforced Geopolymer Composite (PVA-FRGC)

Abstract:This paper presents the effects of various nanosilica (NS) contents on the mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber-reinforced geopolymer composites (PVA-FRGC). Microstructure analysis with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the geopolymer composites. The results showed that the mechanical properties in terms of compressive strength, impact strength, and flexural behavior were improved due to the addition of NS to the PVA-FRGC. The optimum NS content was 1.0 to 2.0 wt%, which exhibited highest improvement in the above mechanical properties. Microstructure analysis showed that the addition of NS up to an optimum level densified the microstructure of the matrix as well as the PVA fiber–geopolymer matrix interface.

Abstract:Sodium alginate (SA) is a renewable material with broad application prospects in textiles, medicine, and other fields. However, the disadvantage of poor strength and brittleness limited its future application. In this work, the SA was reinforced by the hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) with a semi-interpenetrating network which leverages the favourable properties. The structure and surface morphology of SA/HPMC blend membranes after Ca ion cross-linking were examined by FTIR, Raman, XRD and SEM. The mechanical properties and water absorbency of the blend membranes were also studied. The results indicated that the hydrogen bond was found in SA/HPMC blend membranes, which improved the SA/HPMC blend membranes stability. Compared with calcium alginate membrane, the tensile strength and elongation at break of SA/HPMC blend membranes were improved to 57 % and 400 %, respectively.

Abstract:The effect of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3 NPs) content on the structural and optical parameters of polyvinyl alcohol/graphene (PVA/G) blend has been investigated. Fe2O3 NPs were synthesized by the hydrothermal procedure. Nanocomposite (NC) films of PVA/G filled with different amounts of Fe2O3 NPs were equipped using the solution casting technique. The surface morphology, structural, and optical properties were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and ultraviolet‐visible‐near‐IR (UV‐Vis‐NIR) spectrophotometry techniques, respectively. SEM micrographs reveal the homogenous distribution of Fe2O3 NPs in the PVA/G matrix. The XRD analysis exhibits the formulation of the hematite phase of Fe2O3 NPs and the semi‐crystalline nature of PVA/G NC films. The UV‐Vis‐NIR data analysis shows that the optical properties of the PVA/G blend could be tailored via Fe2O3 NPs filling. Wemple–DiDomenico model is utilized to explore the dispersion parameters of the prepared NCs. A significant effect of Fe2O3 NPs filling is realized on the oscillator and dispersion energies, infinite refractive index, dielectric constant, average oscillator strength and the lattice dielectric constant of the NC films. PVA/G filled Fe2O3 NPs are suggested for different optical and storage applications.

Abstract:Composite hydrogel films of bacterial cellulose/collagen/polyvinyl alcohol were prepared by soaking method using bacterial cellulose hydrogel (BC) was as the base material, collagen (COL) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were introduced as the reinforcement material to further improve the tensile strength especially elongation at break. Morphology, mechanical property, and thermal stability of composite hydrogel films were also investigated. The swelling behavior was studied using Schott's second-order swelling model in detail. Research results show that BC/PVA/COL composite showed 181.9 % improvement in elongation at break to that of BC. It further improved the tensile strength of the obtained BC/PVA/COL composite film by 12.9% after crosslinking treatment. Importantly, further investigation demonstrated that the structural stability and thermal stability of the composite hydrogel films were remarkably enhanced. Swelling behavior of BC and the composite nanofiber hydrogel films in DI water followed the Schott's second-order swelling model, the swelling of composites significantly reduced after crosslinking treatment.
