Abstract:Because of the impact of petroleum-based polymers on environmental deterioration and the need for safe, efficient, and functional packaging films, a sodium alginate (SA)-based film incorporating a Schisandra chinensis extract (SCE)-natamycin (NA) complex was developed for the desired physical and functional properties. The incorporation of SCE-NA into SA-based films decreased the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), moisture content (MC), and hydrophilicity of the films and improved their opacity, elongation at break (EAB), and thermal stability. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses showed that SA, SCE, and NA had positive interactions and compatibility. In addition, the antimicrobial activity analysis indicated that the SA-SCE-NA film-forming solutions had satisfactory antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , Saccharomyces cerevisiae , and Aspergillus niger . SA-based composite films have been used to coat cucumbers and blueberries to extend their shelf life. Compared to the neat SA film, the shelf life of cucumbers treated with the SA-SCE-NA film increased by 6 days compared to that in the untreated group at 28 °C, and the shelf life of blueberries increased by 5 days at 4 °C, revealing its potential utilization in food packaging.

Abstract:At present, food waste has become a serious issue and the use of petroleum-based food packaging films has resulted in a series of potential hazards. Therefore, more attention has been focused on the development of new food packaging materials. The polysaccharide-based composite film loaded with active substances considered to be an excellent preservative material. A novel packaging film based on sodium alginate and konjac glucomannan (SA-KGM) blended with tea polyphenols (TP) was prepared in the present study. The excellent microstructure of films was shown by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was indicated by FTIR spectra that the components could interact with each other through hydrogen bonds, which was also confirmed by molecular docking simulation. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties, barrier property, oxidation property, antibacterial activity, and stability of the structure of the TP-SA-KGM film were significantly improved. The AFM images and results of molecular docking simulation indicated that TP could affect the cell wall of bacteria by acting with peptidoglycan. Finally, the film showed excellent preservation effects in both beef and apples, which suggested that TP-SA-KGM film could be a novel bioactive packaging material with wide application potential in food preservation.

Abstract:Using corn starch (CS) and κ-carrageenan(κC) as the raw material and active composite, respectively, films containing different concentrations of ethanol extract of onion skin were prepared. The effects of different concentrations of ethanol extract of onion skin (EEOS) on the physicochemical properties, as well as the antioxidant and antibacterial properties, of CS/κC films were also discussed. The addition of ethanol extract of onion skin inhibited the recrystallization of starch molecules in the composite films. It affected the microstructure of the composite films. The color of the composite films was deepened, the brightness was reduced, and the opacity was increased. Water vapor permeability increased, tensile strength decreased, and elongation at the break increased. The glass-transition temperature decreased. The clearance of DPPH radicals and ABTS cation radicals increased. Moreover, when the concentration of EEOS was 3%, the antioxidant effect of the films on oil was greatly improved and could effectively inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The above results showed that adding ethanol extract of onion skin improved the physicochemical properties and biological activities of the CS/κC composite films, so CS/κC/EEOS composite films can be used as an active packaging material to extend food shelf-life. These results can provide a theoretical basis for the production and application of corn starch/κ-carrageenan/ethanol extract of onion skin composite films.

Fabrication and characterization of an alginate-based film incorporated with cinnamaldehyde for fruit preservation

Abstract:Sodium alginate (SA) is widely used in the food, biomedical, and chemical industries due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and excellent film-forming properties. This article introduces a simple method for preparing uniform alginate-based packaging materials with exceptional properties for fruit preservation. The alginate was uniformly crosslinked by gradually releasing calcium ions triggered by the sustained hydrolysis of gluconolactone (GDL). A cinnamaldehyde (CA) emulsion, stabilized by xanthan without the use of traditional surfactants, was tightly incorporated into the alginate film to enhance its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV shielding properties. The alginate-based film effectively blocked ultraviolet rays in the range of 400-200 nm, while allowing for a visible light transmittance of up to 70 %. Additionally, it showed an increased water contact angle and decreased water vapor permeability. The alginate-based film was also employed in the preparation of coated paper through the commonly used coating process in the papermaking industry. The alginate-based material displayed excellent antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Botrytis cinerea, successfully extending the shelf life of strawberries to 7 days at room temperature. This low-cost and facile method has the potential to drive advancements in the food and biomedical fields by tightly incorporating active oil onto a wide range of biomacromolecule substrates.
A Novel Sodium Alginate-Carnauba Wax Film Containing Calcium Ascorbate: Structural Properties and Preservative Effect on Fresh-Cut Apples

Abstract:In order to improve the mechanical properties, nutritional value and fresh-keeping ability of conventional sodium alginate edible composite membranes, a new type of edible composite film was prepared by adding water-blocking agent carnauba wax, plasticizer glycerin, antioxidant and nutritional enhancer sodium ascorbate on a basis of traditional sodium alginate composite film. In this study, the physical, mechanical and structural properties of different film components were investigated. The results showed the components did not simply combine, but produced interaction forces which improved the stability and mechanical properties of composite film. When the amount of calcium ascorbate was 0.4%, the water vapor transmittance of the composite film reached a minimum of 0.65 g·mm/(cm2·d·kPa), and the tensile strength and elongation at break reached the maximum, which were 398.64 MPa and 17.93%, respectively. Additionally, the sodium alginate-carnauba wax film exhibited better performance on the preservation of fresh-cut apples. Compared with other composite films, the color and hardness of fresh-cut apples coated with this composite film were better maintained, and the losses of titration acid content and soluble solid content were reduced. Moreover, the weight loss rate, increase in polyphenol oxidase activity and total colony count were inhibited. All results determined that the edible film has good application value in the field of fresh-cut fruit preservation, which provides a theoretical basis for further research on edible film.

Abstract:In this study, cinnamon essential oil and tea polyphenols were added to chitosan/ polyvinyl alcohol/ hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/ alizarin composite films to enhance their mechanical and functional properties. Their addition to the composite films enhanced their antibacterial and antioxidant properties and significantly improved its elongation at break ( p < 0.05). Cinnamon essential oil reduced the water vapor permeability, water content, and water solubility of composite films and improved their transparency. The composite films with additive exhibited excellent UV-barrier ability and pH responsivity. Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction analyses confirmed hydrogen bond formation between the polymer molecules and additives. The results of Scanning Electron Microscope-Focused Ion Beam revealed improved surface and cross-section morphology of the films, leading to the generation of a cross-linked structure. Thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analysis indicated enhanced thermal stability of the composite films upon cinnamon essential oil addition. Analysis of storage quality indicators (TBARS value, TVC, and TVB-N) revealed that the composite films could prolong the freshness of surimi. The incorporation of cinnamon essential oil and tea polyphenols into the composite films has demonstrated significant potential as an effective and natural alternative for active food packaging.

Abstract:This study developed an edible film based on calcium-crosslinked sodium alginate (SA) using the casting method. The investigation assessed how the α-L-guluronic acid/β-D-mannuronic acid (G/M ratio) and zein addition influence the film's physicochemical properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy findings suggest that the G/M ratio modulates the film's physicochemical characteristics by altering SA molecular cross-linking strength and the film's network structure density. At a G/M ratio of 0.85, the film exhibits a more uniform network structure, enhanced moisture resistance, hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties. Zein, evenly dispersed within the film matrix, establishes strong hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions with SA, enhancing the film's network structure and boosting its thermophysical, mechanical, and moisture resistance characteristics. The study demonstrates that modifying the G/M ratio and incorporating zein enhances the film's mechanical and hydrophobic properties, broadening its potential applications in food packaging.
Preparation and Application of Edible Film Based on Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose-Sodium Alginate Composite Soybean Oil Body

Abstract:In the study, edible films were successfully prepared by incorporating soybean oil body (SOB) into sodium alginate-sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SA-CMC) matrix. The effects of different concentrations (0–4% w/w) of SOB on the physicochemical and antioxidant activities of films were systematically evaluated based on mechanical strength, barrier properties, thermal stability, and preservation effect. Findings revealed that the oxidation resistance, water vapor barrier, and thermal stability enhanced after the addition of SOB, while the water content, water solubility, and swelling rate decreased. When 3% SOB was added, the edible film performed the best in terms of mechanical properties and thermal stability; water vapor permeability was reduced by 21.89% compared to the control group, and the fresh life of pigeon meat was extended by 5–7 days. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses showed that the addition of SOB results in a more stable molecular structure network, which improved its physical properties. Overall, the findings indicated that SOB improved the quality of edible films as an environmentally friendly food packaging material and increased the feasibility of edible film application in the food industry.

Abstract:Active edible films based on okara soluble dietary fiber (SDF), pectin, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) and thyme essential oil (TEO) were successfully prepared. We aimed to exploit biodegradable edible films and realize the full utilization of waste resources. The effects of different amounts of pectin on the properties and structural characterization of the composite film with or without TEO were studied using a solution casting evaporation method. In general, the addition of TEO can improve the properties of the composite membrane. Pectin was homogeneously distributed within the films and exhibited good interaction with the polymer matrix. The addition of pectin led to significantly higher mechanical and optical properties of the composite film, compared with SDF/CMC-Na composite film. The tensile strength reached 21.419 ± 2.22 MPa, and the minimum transparency reduced to 88.9% ± 0.42%, with increasing pectin. Notably, the water resistance and oil resistance were enhanced. The composite films also possessed satisfactory antioxidant activity, with a DPPH-free radical scavenging rate of 46.33% ± 0.72%, while antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria was not obvious. Antioxidant and antibacterial SDF/pectin/CMC-Na composite films with enhanced mechanical, optical and barrier properties are excellent candidates for active edible packaging.

Abstract:Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), an inorganic and non-toxic polyphosphate, has potential applications as a crosslinking agent in the fabrication of edible films. This study utilized STPP in the development of sodium alginate-chitosan composite films, with a focus on their suitability for food packaging applications. The results indicate that the incorporation of STPP led to an increase in film thickness (from 0.048 ± 0.004 to 0.078 ± 0.008 mm), elongation at break (from 11.50 ± 1.49 % to 15.88 ± 2.14 %), water permeation (from 0.364 ± 0.010 to 0.521 ± 0.021 gmm/(m 2 h*kPa)), and moisture content (from 25.98 ± 0.20 % to 28.12 ± 0.17 %). In contrast, there was a decrease in tensile strength (from 30.23 ± 2.08 to 25.60 ± 1.22 MPa) and swelling index (from 752.9 ± 17.1 to 533.5 ± 8.9 %). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed the formation of distinctive needle-like microcrystals with the incorporation of STPP. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis indicated intermolecular interactions between STPP and the film-forming biopolymers. The data obtained from Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated enhanced thermal stability of STPP-loaded films at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, the films exhibited increased DPPH scavenging activity with the addition of STPP. This study underscores the potential of STPP as a crosslinking agent for the development of composite edible films, suggesting applications in the field of food packaging.

Abstract:Pickering emulsion, a novel technique that uses solid particles as emulsion stabilizers has attracted attention because of its long-term storage stability and good coalescence stability. This can help to prolong the shelf life of fresh produce. The poor water vapor barrier, ultraviolet (UV), mechanical, and antifungal capacities of alginate film limit its application in fruit preservation. In this study, alginate (Alg) films with improved water vapor permeability (WVP), mechanical properties, and ultraviolet (UV) barrier were prepared with ylang-ylang oil (YYO) Pickering emulsion (PE). YYO was added as an antimicrobial agent. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used as natural stabilizers to prepare YYO PE. The final coating comprised 1% Alg (alginate), Alg/0.24% CNCs, and Alg/0.5% YYO PE. The impacts of YYO-PE on the properties of Alg films were investigated, and their effects on post-harvest control of mandarins were evaluated. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) was used to identify the components of YYO. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed an increase in the roughness of the films containing the Alg/YYO PE. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis revealed no new interactions in the Alg/YYO PE films. Moisture content (MC) and thermal properties were lower for Alg/YYO-PE films. The Alg/YYO-PE coating lowered the weight loss (7.84 ± 1.76%) and inhibited (p < 0.05) the growth of Penicillium italicum (P. italicum) and Penicillium digitatum (P. digitatum). The inhibition percentages were 56.02% and 47.98%, respectively, for the inoculated mandarins. In conclusion, the Alg/YYO PE coating and film have the potential to be an eco-friendly active packaging material in the food sector.

Bioactive composite films with improved antioxidant and barrier properties prepared from sodium alginate and deep eutectic solvent treated distillers' grains

Abstract:In this work, a straightforward approach utilizing distillers' grains (DG) waste and sodium alginate (SA) was developed to prepare functional and bioactive packaging films. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were initially synthesized from choline chloride (CO), betaine (BO), glycerol (GO), and oxalic acid. Composite films were then prepared from DES-treated DG slurry and SA at different ratios. Characterization and analysis revealed that adding 75 % CO-treated DG slurry reduced the water vapor permeability (WVP) by over 66 % compared to that of the SA film. Composite films containing CO/BO-treated DG slurry had an ultraviolet light barrier rate exceeding 99 %, while those with 75 % DES-treated DG slurry demonstrated excellent antioxidant activity, with a 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radical scavenging rate of 80.14 %-88.35 %, representing a 322.45 %-365.73 % increase compared to that of the pure SA film. These composite films also exhibited favorable mechanical properties (31.58 MPa, 5.53 % EB), thermal stability, and biodegradability, extending the shelf life of grapes by 1.8 times. In conclusion, bioactive composite films derived from DES-treated DG are expected to replace petroleum-based plastics, enhancing sustainable biomass use and environmental responsibility.
Development, RSM-Based Optimization, and Characterization of a Unique Edible Composite Film by Incorporating Clove Essential Oil Based on Sodium Alginate and Aloe vera Gel to Preserve the Quality of Blueberries

Abstract:In recent years, edible composite films have attracted more attention instead of plastic packaging in the field of food packaging. Combined with clove essential oil (CO), the edible composite film based on sodium alginate (SA) and Aloe vera gel (AG) was developed. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of SA, AG, and CO on the barrier and mechanical properties of the composite films and the impact of the edible composite film on the freshness of blueberry fruits. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on single factor experiments were used to get the optimum formula with the best property. The results showed that the optimal formula was SA 15.6 gL-1, AG 90 gL-1, and CO 10 gL-1, SA, AG, and CO had significant effect on the characteristics of the films, also, the crossed-linking action of SA and AG was further confirmed by characterization, while CO significantly influenced barrier and mechanical property and improved the antibacterial activity of the film. The composite film kept great hardness, less weight loss, more soluble solid, and more vitamin C of blueberries, proving the bacteriostatic activity of AG and CO. The results suggest that the edible composite film has an enormous potential in extending the shelf-life of blueberries with this formula.

Impacts of tannin inclusion on fabrication, characterization and antioxidant activity of sodium alginate-silk fibroin-tannin films and their application on fresh-cut apple packaging

Abstract:The current work aimed to formulate sodium alginate-silk fibroin-tannin films to preserve fresh-cut apples. In this experiment, tannins (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5%) were added to the sodium alginate (1.05%)-silk fibroin (3.38%) films by casting method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, molecular docking was employed to investigate the presence of hydrogen bonding among the sodium alginate, silk fibroin and tannins. Scanning electron microscopy showed surfaces and cross-sections became porous and rough with increasing tannins concentration. The films were characterized by mechanical properties, light barrier properties, water solubility and water vapor permeability. The value of maximum tensile strength and minimum elongation at break was 0.99 MPa and 91.38% respectively for the sodium alginate-silk fibroin-tannin films with 0.3% (w/v) tannins. The percentage of light transmittance of sodium alginate-silk fibroin-0.3% tannin films was 54.45% at 500 nm. The water solubility rate of sodium alginate-silk fibroin-0.3% tannin films at pH 8.0 was improved 54.42% compared with that at pH 1.2. The value of minimum water vapor permeability of the sodium alginate-silk fibroin-0.3% tannin films was 1.49 × 10 4 g mm/cm 2 ∙s∙Pa. The sodium alginate-silk fibroin-tannin films showed higher scavenging ability of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and superoxide anion radical than sodium alginate-silk fibroin films. The sodium alginate-silk fibroin-tannin films had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The apples packed with the sodium alginate-silk fibroin-0.3% tannin films did not rot during seven days. The fabricated films of sodium alginate-silk fibroin-tannin in this study are biodegradable and they may be a promising food packaging material.

Abstract:This study reported the preparation of composite sodium alginate-gum Arabic films by incorporating nano emulsions and pickering emulsions loaded with mixed oregano and citronella essential oils. Nano emulsions and pickering emulsions were prepared with Tween 80 and whey protein isolate/inulin. The results of Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, thermo-gravimetric analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy demonstrated that sodium alginate-gum Arabic and the emulsion-loaded mixed oregano and citronella essential oils were biocompatible. The mixed oregano and citronella essential oils was enclosed in Pickering emulsions in the film samples, which also improved the mechanical and water barrier qualities, slowed the release of the active components. The composite film was applied to the storage experiment of goji berries at 25°C. In comparison to the control group, the composite film containing 0.4% Pickering emulsions significantly decreased weight loss and fruit deterioration while also extending shelf life by 3 days. Abstract:ABSTRACTCrosslinked nanocomposite films of sodium alginate (SA) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) with different SiO2 loading values were prepared by in situ synthesis. Biocomposite films were produced by solution casting and solvent evaporation with glycerol as the plasticizer and calcium chloride as the crosslinking agent. The effects of the addition of nano silicon dioxide (nano‐SiO2) in SA on the microstructural, physical, mechanical, and optical properties of the nanocomposite films were characterized. The results show that nano‐SiO2 was dispersed homogeneously in the SA matrix; it thereby formed a strong interfacial interaction between the nano‐SiO2 particles and the matrix. The transparency of the bionanocomposite films was enhanced. Thermogravimetric analysis also revealed that nano‐SiO2 improved the thermal stability of the SA films. The incorporation of SiO2 further reduced the water vapor permeability and swelling degree and significantly increased the tensile strength and elongation, which are parameters important for packaging industries. Finally, the lower light transmission of UV light from 200 to 250 nm indicated that SA/SiO2 nanocomposite films could potentially be used to prevent lipid damage by UV light in food conservation. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Abstract In this study, carboxymethyl chitosan with gum Arabic (CG) based novel functional films containing Cinnamomum camphora seeds extract (CCSE) at varying concentrations (0.5, 1.2 and 2% in w/w) were successfully fabricated. Moreover, sixteen phenolic compounds were identified by LC-ESI-QTOF-MS and the most abundant organic acid was citric acid (present at 1062.55 μg/g dry weight in CCSE). SEM showed that higher extract concentration indicated a homogeneous surface and more stability of films. CCSE inclusion into CG resulted in a marked increase (33.01 to 63.23 MPa) of tensile properties, with optimum thickness. The swelling degree, water solubility, and water vapor permeability were markedly (p < 0.05) reduced from 54.21 to 31.70%, 32.05 to 14.02%, and 3.46 to 1.12 × 10 −11 g −1 s −1 Pa −1 , respectively. The open control and CG samples showed much higher peroxide values of sunflower oil (69.49 ± 0.68 and 20.15 ± 0.31 mEq/kg, respectively) while CG-CCSE2 exhibited a low value (9.79 ± 0.28 mEq/kg) after 28 days incubation. The good antioxidant and antimicrobial properties exhibited by the fabricated films demonstrated their potential use in the food packaging industry.

Abstract:A sporadic case of Hallervorden-Spatz Syndrome was diagnosed before death. The diagnosis was made on clinical manifestations and histopathology of the tissue fragments obtained from the globus pallidus by stereotaxic brain biopsy. The involvement of thoracolumbar spinal cord is discussed. The cranial computed tomography showed caudate atrophy with bicaudate index (CC/OTcc) of 0.2, and the quotient FH/CC of 1.43, which were indistinguishable from Huntington's disease.

Abstract:The applications of alginate derived from seaweed polysaccharide in food packaging are restricted due to their inherent deficient antibacterial, antioxidant and UV barrier properties. In this study, nitrogen-functionalized carbon dots (NCDs) with active functions (0.5–3 %) and layered clay (1 %) with barrier property were introduced to construct alginate based active films via solution casting method. The results showed that the synthesized spherical NCDs had a particle size of 2–3 nm, and the internal structure of NCDs was similar to graphene, with a large number of active groups (-NH 2 , -OH, etc.) on the surface. Infrared analysis revealed that NCDs could form strong hydrogen bonds with alginate matrix, which slowed down the deterioration of mechanical properties and reduced the surface wettability. With the addition of NCDs, active functions and surface hydrophobicity of the active films were enhanced significantly ( P < 0.05). When the amount of NCDs reached 3 %, UV barrier, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the active films were increased by 50.0 %, 61.1 % and 70.1 %, respectively. The addition of NCDs could enhance the anti-browning ability of alginate based coatings and extend the shelf life of banana significantly. Therefore, a suitable amount of NCDs (1–2 %) and layered clay (1 %) can synergistically improve comprehensive performance of alginate based films and promote their food packaging application used as active films/inner coatings.
