Abstract:In this study, zein-loaded cinnamaldehyde (Cin@ZN) nanoparticles were incorporated into Chitosan (CS)/dialdehyde carboxymethyl cellulose (DCMC) matrix to fabricate the active food packaging materials possessing outstanding antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The research investigated how varying levels of Cin@ZN nanoparticles affected the morphology, microstructure, physicochemical properties of CS/DCMC composite films. The inclusion of Cin@ZN could significantly improve the mechanical strength, reduce the water vapor and oxygen permeability of CS/DCMC composite films and endow films with UV-light blocking properties. It's worth noting that the antibacterial and antioxidant capacities of CS/DCMC films had an astonishing enhancement with Cin@ZN blending, in which ABTS scavenging ratio of the composite films (100 mg) with different Cin@ZN contents reached >90 %. Furthermore, CS/DCMC/Cin@ZN 35 % composite film has the ability to efficiently protect strawberries from microbial damage and decelerate the spoilage rate of strawberries under ambient condition. Consequently, the CS/DCMC/Cin@ZN composite film can be applied as packaging material to extend the lifespan of fruits.

Abstract:This work was aimed to prepare wheat gliadin/chitosan (CS) blend films and to evaluate influence of CS content on properties of the films. Morphology observation using scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed a phase-separated structure and a phase reversion with respect to CS content in the blend films. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectrum measurements were conducted to assess the glass transition and microstructure of the films. Also studied were the mechanical properties and water barrier properties of the films. Results showed that gliadin/CS ratio had a significant effect on the functional performance of the films.

Abstract:In this study, cinnamon essential oil and tea polyphenols were added to chitosan/ polyvinyl alcohol/ hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/ alizarin composite films to enhance their mechanical and functional properties. Their addition to the composite films enhanced their antibacterial and antioxidant properties and significantly improved its elongation at break ( p < 0.05). Cinnamon essential oil reduced the water vapor permeability, water content, and water solubility of composite films and improved their transparency. The composite films with additive exhibited excellent UV-barrier ability and pH responsivity. Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction analyses confirmed hydrogen bond formation between the polymer molecules and additives. The results of Scanning Electron Microscope-Focused Ion Beam revealed improved surface and cross-section morphology of the films, leading to the generation of a cross-linked structure. Thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analysis indicated enhanced thermal stability of the composite films upon cinnamon essential oil addition. Analysis of storage quality indicators (TBARS value, TVC, and TVB-N) revealed that the composite films could prolong the freshness of surimi. The incorporation of cinnamon essential oil and tea polyphenols into the composite films has demonstrated significant potential as an effective and natural alternative for active food packaging.

Abstract:In this study, gelatin-chitosan (GEL-CS) composite films added with 0.1 %, 0.2 %, and 0.3 % Cyclocarya paliurus flavonoids (CPF) were prepared. Then their appearance properties, mechanical properties, barrier properties, microstructure, thermal stability properties, antioxidant activity, and antibacterial properties were investigated. As compared with GEL-CS film, the GEL-CS films with CPF were darker in color, had higher water vapor barrier, higher elongation at break, and higher thermal stability. Additionally, microstructure analysis with Fourier infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction demonstrated that hydrogen bonding was the main force for cross-linking CPF with other membrane substrates. Moreover, the addition of CPF strengthened the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the membranes. These results indicated that the CPF addition could endow membranes with more excellent functional properties and bioactivity, accompanied by environmentally friendly and edible features. The GEL-CS-CPF composite film would be a potential and prospective packing material for food preservation applications.

Abstract:Gliadin(60wt%)/chitosan(40wt%) composite film with glycerol as plasticizer,glutaraldehyde or L-cysteine as crosslinker were prepared using solution-casting method.Influences of the amount of crosslinker on the mechanical properties,moisture absorption,water swelling and solubility of the composite film were investigated.The results showed that the two modifying methods can both significantly improve tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composite films.Tensile strength of the composite film increased by 5 times and Young's modulus increased by nearly 8 times with addition of 0.15wt% glutaraldehyde.Glutaraldehyde could lower water solubility of the composite film,while the reverse was true for L-cysteine.

Abstract:Using corn starch (CS) and κ-carrageenan(κC) as the raw material and active composite, respectively, films containing different concentrations of ethanol extract of onion skin were prepared. The effects of different concentrations of ethanol extract of onion skin (EEOS) on the physicochemical properties, as well as the antioxidant and antibacterial properties, of CS/κC films were also discussed. The addition of ethanol extract of onion skin inhibited the recrystallization of starch molecules in the composite films. It affected the microstructure of the composite films. The color of the composite films was deepened, the brightness was reduced, and the opacity was increased. Water vapor permeability increased, tensile strength decreased, and elongation at the break increased. The glass-transition temperature decreased. The clearance of DPPH radicals and ABTS cation radicals increased. Moreover, when the concentration of EEOS was 3%, the antioxidant effect of the films on oil was greatly improved and could effectively inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The above results showed that adding ethanol extract of onion skin improved the physicochemical properties and biological activities of the CS/κC composite films, so CS/κC/EEOS composite films can be used as an active packaging material to extend food shelf-life. These results can provide a theoretical basis for the production and application of corn starch/κ-carrageenan/ethanol extract of onion skin composite films.

Abstract:In this study, following the green, environmentally friendly and sustainable development strategy, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were prepared through a solvent-free esterification reaction between microcrystalline cellulose and maleic anhydride, combined with subsequent ultrasonic treatment, and maleic-anhydride-modified CNC-reinforced zein/catechin/β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanoparticles nanocomposite films were prepared by a facile solution casting. The amount of CNCs in the film matrix was 0–8 wt%, and their effect on structural, physicochemical and functional properties of the resulting films were investigated. SEM images showed that the addition of CNCs made the microstructure of the film more smooth and uniform. The intermolecular hydrogen bonds between CNCs and film matrix were supported by FT-IR. XRD analysis also confirmed the appearance of a crystalline peak due to the existence of CNCs inside the films. The incorporation of CNCs significantly reduced water vapor permeability, water solubility and the swelling degree of the nanocomposite film, and also significantly increased tensile strength and elongation at break from 12.66 to 37.82 MPa and 4.5% to 5.2% (p < 0.05). Moreover, nanocomposite film packaging with CNCs can effectively inhibit the oxidation of soybean oil.

Abstract:Memory impairment is a frequent complaint in insomniacs; however, it is not consistently demonstrated. It is unknown whether memory impairment in insomniacs involves neuroendocrine dysfunction. The participants in this study were selected from the clinical setting and included 21 patients with chronic insomnia disorder (CID), 25 patients with insomnia and comorbid depressive disorder (CDD), and 20 control participants without insomnia. We evaluated spatial working and reference memory, object working and reference memory, and object recognition memory using the Nine Box Maze Test. We also evaluated serum neuroendocrine hormone levels. Compared to the controls, the CID patients made significantly more errors in spatial working and object recognition memory (p < .05), whereas the CDD patients performed poorly in all the assessed memory types (p < .05). In addition, the CID patients had higher levels (mean difference [95% CI]) of corticotrophin-releasing hormone, cortisol (31.98 [23.97, 39.98] μg/l), total triiodothyronine (667.58 [505.71, 829.45] μg/l), and total thyroxine (41.49 [33.23, 49.74] μg/l) (p < .05), and lower levels of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (-35.93 [-38.83, -33.02] ng/l), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (-4.50 [-5.02, -3.98] ng/l) (p < .05), and adrenocorticotropic hormone compared to the CDD patients. After controlling for confounding variables, the partial correlation analysis revealed that the levels of cortisol positively correlated with the errors in object working memory (r = .534, p = .033) and negatively correlated with the errors in object recognition memory (r = -.659, p = .006) in the CID patients. The results suggest that the CID patients had selective memory impairment, which may be mediated by increased cortisol levels.

Abstract:Active edible films based on okara soluble dietary fiber (SDF), pectin, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) and thyme essential oil (TEO) were successfully prepared. We aimed to exploit biodegradable edible films and realize the full utilization of waste resources. The effects of different amounts of pectin on the properties and structural characterization of the composite film with or without TEO were studied using a solution casting evaporation method. In general, the addition of TEO can improve the properties of the composite membrane. Pectin was homogeneously distributed within the films and exhibited good interaction with the polymer matrix. The addition of pectin led to significantly higher mechanical and optical properties of the composite film, compared with SDF/CMC-Na composite film. The tensile strength reached 21.419 ± 2.22 MPa, and the minimum transparency reduced to 88.9% ± 0.42%, with increasing pectin. Notably, the water resistance and oil resistance were enhanced. The composite films also possessed satisfactory antioxidant activity, with a DPPH-free radical scavenging rate of 46.33% ± 0.72%, while antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria was not obvious. Antioxidant and antibacterial SDF/pectin/CMC-Na composite films with enhanced mechanical, optical and barrier properties are excellent candidates for active edible packaging.

Abstract:Composite films based on chitosan (CS) incorporating Galla chinensis extract (GCNE) at different CS/GCNE weight ratios, which are both biodegradable and multifunctional, were fabricated using the solution-casting method. The FTIR analyses indicated that a good interaction was presented among the GCNE and CS through an intermolecular hydrogen bond. The incorporation of the GCNE improved the films' elongation at break, UV-light blocking, and decreased the moisture regain (from 16.68% to 10.69%) and water absorption (from 80.65% to 54.74%). Moreover, the CS/GCNE films exhibited a strong antioxidant activity (from 57.11% to 70.37% of DPPH and from 35.53% to 46.73% of ABTS scavenging activities) mainly due to the high content of phenolic compounds in the incorporated GCNE. The CS/GCNE film-forming solution coatings demonstrated their effectiveness in preserving the quality of postharvest mangoes, specifically by minimizing the change in the firmness, weight loss, titratable acidity, and total phenolic and ascorbic acids. These findings suggest that the multifunctional composite films possess a high application potential to preserve postharvest fruits.

Fabrication and characterization of emulsion-based edible film containing cinnamon essential oil using chia seed mucilage

Abstract:Chia seed mucilage (CSM) film incorporated with 2, 4, and 6 % (w/w) nanoemulsion of cinnamon essential oil (CSM-2, CSM-4, CSM-6) were developed, and their physicochemical, mechanical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties were determined. According to the results, cinnamon EO nanoemulsion (CEN) had droplet size 196.07 ± 1.39 nm with PDI 0.47 ± 0.04. Moreover, CSM film had higher water solubility (99.37 ± 0.05 %) and WVP (8.55 ± 1.10 g/kPa h m2) than reinforced CSM films with CENCEN. The lowest water solubility (98.02 ± 0.01 %) and WVP (3.75 ± 0.80 g/kPa h m2) was observed in CSM-6 film. Moreover, the addition of CEN improved the homogeneity and density of films and the smoothness of the surface, being observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy also confirmed the incorporation of CEN within the film matrix. The CSM films' antioxidant (DPPH radical scavenging power) and antimicrobial (against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) properties of CSM films were notably enhanced with the inclusion of CEN in a dose-dependent manner. The mechanical (tensile strength and elongation at break) of CSM films also was affected by the addition of CEN, TS decreased, and EAB increased (p < 0.05). The lowest TS (20.63 ± 1.39 MPa) and highest EAB (3.36 ± 0.61 %) was observed in CSM-4 film. However, CSM film was relatively dark with low opacity, and adding CEN slightly increased lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*) parameters. The superior antioxidant and barrier characteristics of the CSM edible film incorporated with CEN make it a potential candidate for product packaging and shelf-life extension.
Identification and quantification of Cinnamomum camphora seeds extract and development of citric acid and polyphenols based carboxymethyl chitosan-gum Arabic hybrid film for intelligent packaging applications

Abstract:Abstract In this study, carboxymethyl chitosan with gum Arabic (CG) based novel functional films containing Cinnamomum camphora seeds extract (CCSE) at varying concentrations (0.5, 1.2 and 2% in w/w) were successfully fabricated. Moreover, sixteen phenolic compounds were identified by LC-ESI-QTOF-MS and the most abundant organic acid was citric acid (present at 1062.55 μg/g dry weight in CCSE). SEM showed that higher extract concentration indicated a homogeneous surface and more stability of films. CCSE inclusion into CG resulted in a marked increase (33.01 to 63.23 MPa) of tensile properties, with optimum thickness. The swelling degree, water solubility, and water vapor permeability were markedly (p < 0.05) reduced from 54.21 to 31.70%, 32.05 to 14.02%, and 3.46 to 1.12 × 10 −11 g −1 s −1 Pa −1 , respectively. The open control and CG samples showed much higher peroxide values of sunflower oil (69.49 ± 0.68 and 20.15 ± 0.31 mEq/kg, respectively) while CG-CCSE2 exhibited a low value (9.79 ± 0.28 mEq/kg) after 28 days incubation. The good antioxidant and antimicrobial properties exhibited by the fabricated films demonstrated their potential use in the food packaging industry.

Abstract:Active bionanocomposite films were prepared by incorporating konjac glucomannan (KGM) as a matrix, with carboxylation cellulose nanocrystal (C-CNC) as a reinforcement agent and grape peel extracts (GPE) as a natural antioxidation agent. The effects of C-CNC and/or GPE addition on the structural, morphological, barrier, thermal, mechanical and antioxidant properties of the bionanocomposite films were investigated. The rheological results of film forming solutions revealed that C-CNC and GPE were well dispersed in the KGM matrix. Scanning electron micrographs observed the addition of C-CNC had little effect on the microstructure, while more roughness and unevenness were observed on the film surface and cross-section with the C-CNC and GPE. Furthermore, the water vapor barrier property and transparency of the films improved by the addition of the C-CNC and GPE. Notably, the incorporating of C-CNC or GPE significantly alter the mechanical of the KGM/C-CNC/GPE bionanocomposite films. The highest tensile strength was achieved for the KGM/GPE bionanocomposite film with 10 wt% C-CNC, indicating C-CNC and GPE had synergistic effect on enhancing the TS of KGM film. Moreover, the KGM/C-CNC/GPE films exhibited strong antioxidant activity. These results suggested that KGM/C-CNC/GPE bionanocomposite films can be used as an active food packaging for increasing shelf life of packaged foods.

Abstract:The chitosan/okra powder/nano-silicon aerogel composite films were prepared by casting method and their physicochemical properties and structural characterization were studied. The results showed that the composite film had good mechanical properties, barrier properties and optical properties. The composite film has strong flexibility. The surface glossiness of C/D/S1.5:1:0.1 film was 14.4Gu. As for the antibacterial activity, all the composite films had strong antibacterial activity against Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus), and the inhibition zone of C/D/S1.5:1:0.10 against E. coli reached 551.96 mm2, the inhibition zone for S. aureus was 350.29 mm2. The composite film had uniform, non-porous, continuous and dense surface characteristics. The structural characterization confirmed that there was good compatibility between chitosan, okara powder and nano-silicon aerogel. In summary, the composite films had excellent performance and structure, which promoted the research of functional packaging films.

Abstract:Biodegradable packaging films containing natural bioactive ingredients emerge nowadays to respond to increasing demands for safety, health, and sustainability in the food industry. The biodegradable active composite films were constructed for the first time using chia seed mucilage (CSM) and chitosan (CS) as film-forming materials and Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge (X. sorbifolium) leaf extract as an active ingredient, namely the CSM/CS/X films. The effects of active component contents (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 wt%) on the microstructure, mechanical, thermodynamic properties, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities of the composite film were studied. Interestingly, the CSM/CS/X4 film which contains 4 wt% of X. sorbifolium leaf extract has relatively better micromorphology and performance than other films. Compared with the blank CSM/CS film, the CSM/CS/X films incorporated with X. sorbifolium leaf extract sustainably display good antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The all-atom molecular dynamics simulations reveal the helix structure of the CSM/CS/X films, showing that introducing extract promotes the formation of the composite film through enhanced Coulomb and van der Waals interactions. The results suggest that low-value X. sorbifolium leaf can be used to prepare eco-friendly functional packaging films, which are expected to replace petroleum-based packaging materials that can improve the quality and freshness of food. The study provides a new and effective way for the recycling and value-added utilization of biowaste.

Abstract:Edible coatings have attracted the attention of researchers in recent years due to their degradability, safety, non-toxicity, low cost, good preservation effect, and other advantages. To prepare a new edible film with good mechanical and barrier properties, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and gelatin (GL) were selected as the film-forming matrix in this experiment, and glycerol, CaCl2, Tween-20, and ascorbic acid (AA) have been added as plasticizers, crosslinking agents, surfactants, and antioxidants. Crosslinking agents and antioxidants first, the film was prepared by the casting method, and single factor tests were used to compare the effects of different CMCS: GL (w:w), glycerol, CaCl2, Tween-20, and AA on mechanical properties (Tensile Strength (TS), Elongation at break (EAB)) and barrier properties (Water Vapor Permeability (WVP), Oxygen Permeability (OP)). Then, the weighting of each performance index is determined by a combination of principal component analysis and the comprehensive membership evaluation method. The formula for calculating the overall rating of edible film performance was determined. Finally, the manufacturing process of edible film with better performance was optimized by a response surface test. The results showed that the influence of each factor on the performance of the edible film was as follows: Glycerol addition > CaCl2 addition > CMCS:GL, Tween-20, and AA had no significant influence on the performance of the edible film. When calculating the overall edible film property score, the weights of TS, EAB, WVP, and OP were 0.251, 0.068, 0.334, and 0.347, respectively. The optimal formulation for an edible film based on CMCS-GL with better properties than pure CMCS and GL film was CMCS:GL = 2:1, with the addition of 1% glycerol, 2% CaCl2, 0.1% Tween-20, and 2% AA. The TS, EAB, OP, and WVP of the film obtained with this formula were: 16.28 MPa, 71.46%, 1.39 × 10−12 g·cm/(cm2·s·Pa), 5.10 × 10−11 cm3·cm/(m2·s·Pa), respectively. This study suggests that CMCS-GL-based edible coatings can be used as a new food packaging material.

Abstract:In this study, carboxymethyl chitosan with gum Arabic (CG) based novel functional films containing Cinnamomum camphora seeds extract (CCSE) at varying concentrations (0.5, 1.2 and 2% in w/w) were successfully fabricated. Moreover, sixteen phenolic compounds were identified by liquid chromatography and electrospray-ionized quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-QTOF-MS) and the most abundant organic acid was citric acid (present at 1062.55 μg/g dry weight in CCSE). The resulting CG-ANC.P film was comprehensively characterized in terms of physicochemical properties, morphological characteristics, molecular properties, melting, and bioactivities properties (antimicrobial, antioxidant and biodegradability). CCSE inclusion into CG resulted in a marked increase (33.01–63.23 MPa) of tensile properties, with optimum thickness. The swelling degree, water solubility, and water vapor permeability were markedly (p < 0.05) reduced from 54.21 to 31.70%, 32.05 to 14.02%, and 3.46 to 1.12 × 10−11 g−1 s−1 Pa−1, respectively. The open control and CG samples showed much higher peroxide values of sunflower oil (69.49 ± 0.68 and 20.15 ± 0.31 mEq/kg, respectively) while CG-CCSE2 exhibited a low value (9.79 ± 0.28 mEq/kg) after 28 days incubation. The CG biodegradable film with the addition of CCSE (2%) was optimal for producing functional films with antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

Abstract:Cinnamaldehyde and TiO2 multifunctional films with excellent UV shielding, antimicrobial and antioxidant abilities. Soy protein isolated (SPI) have a wide application in the food packaging, but their water resistance, mechanical properties and antibacterial properties are not ideal for directly use. In our study, we developed a series of SPI composite films loaded with cinnamaldehyde and titanium dioxide (TiO2). X‐ray diffraction (XRD), UV scanning spectra (UV) and spectro colorimeter were applied to indicate the structure of films. The incorporation of TiO2 (0.5%) caused a subsequent effect on the tensile property, UV blocking properties and water vapor properties (WVP). On the other hand, SPI film composed with a constant amount of TiO2 and different concentration of cinnamaldehyde showed an excellent synergistic effect to improve the tensile property, moisture content, UV blocking properties, water vapor properties and morphological characteristics. Furthermore, the composite films exhibited superior antibacterial activity when tested against both S. aureus and E. coli. The microstructure of the composite film become heterogeneous and rough after addition of TiO2 and cinnamaldehyde compare to control film. The findings of the present study may facilitate a re‐evaluation of the potential of using multiple compounds to prepare active edible films.

Abstract:An active film composed of corn starch/κ-carrageenan and ethanolic grape seed extract (0, 1, 3, and 5 wt% of GSE on corn starch basis) were successfully prepared using the solvent casting technique. The effects of the different concentrations of ethanolic grape seed extract (GSE) on the physicochemical properties, antioxidant properties, and antibacterial properties of CS/κC films were analyzed. The results showed that the addition of GSE inhibited the recrystallization of starch in the composite film. The glass transition temperature of composite film is 121.65 °C. With the addition of GSE, the surface roughness of the composite film increased, and the cross-section displayed a stratification phenomenon. Meanwhile, when GSE was added to the composite film, the tensile strength of the composite film decreased (3.50 ± 0.27 MPa), the elongation at break increased (36.87 ± 2.08%), and the WVP increased (1.58 ± 0.03 g mm/m2·d· kPa). With the increase of the concentration of GSE in the composite film, the a* value and b* value of the composite film increase, the L* value decreases, and the opacity increases. The lipid oxidation test proved that the composite films containing 1% GSE has a significant inhibitory effect on the oxidation of lard (p < 0.05). The above results indicate that the GSE can be used as a food-grade packaging material and has a good application prospect in the food industry.
