Abstract:Sb2S3 as a stable light harvesting material has received increasing attention for solar cell applications. To improve the device efficiency, much effort has been put into the materials synthesis, interfacial engineering, and device structure design. Here, it is demonstrated that doping of alkali metal (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) ions essentially affects the morphological, crystal, optical and electrical properties of Sb2S3 films. The structural and compositional analysis shows that the doping is in form of alkali metal-sulfur chemical bond at both surface and grain boundaries of Sb2S3 films. Compared with the pristine Sb2S3, we observe that Li and Na doping are not able to improve the device efficiency, while K, Rb, and Cs notably increase energy conversion efficiency. The most effective enhancement is found in Cs-doped Sb2S3, where the carrier concentration, crystallinity, and film formability show remarkable improvement. The device based on the Cs-Sb2S3 film delivers a power conversion efficiency of 6.56%, which is the highest efficiency in planar heterojunction Sb2S3 solar cells, regardless of whether the films are fabricated by a solution process or thermal deposition. This research identifies that doping of heavy alkali metals is an effective approach to improve the performance of Sb2S3 solar cells.

Abstract:Ion doping strategy is a promising method to enhance the efficiency of Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) solar cells, however, most of the reported works focus on studying the single ion doping in CZTSSe absorber layers. Here, Li+&Ag+ and Li+&Cd2+ double-ion-doping strategy are applied to improve the microstructure and device performances. We found that the double-ion-doping strategy can obviously increase the grain size, reduce the thickness of fine-grain layers and enhance the device performances. Furthermore, the PCEs of Li+&Ag+ and Li+&Cd2+ doped CZTSSe solar cells are up to 8.87% and 8.39%, respectively. It shows an encouraging improvement of over 43.5% and 35.8% enhancement compared with the traditional method (6.18%), and significantly higher than single ion doping strategy (7.60%, 7.99% and 7.11% for Li+, Ag+, and Cd2+ doped CZTSSe solar cells). This work provides a new solution to improve the microstructure and device performances of CZTSSe solar cells.

Bandgap Engineering and Enhancing Optoelectronic Performance of a Lead-Free Double Perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 Solar Cell via Al Doping

Abstract:In this study, solar cells based on pure Cs2AgBiBr6 and Al-doped metal were fabricated using the sol-gel spin-coating technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the formation of cubic-structured films for both pure and Al-doped. Notably, the grain size of Al-doped Cs2AgBiBr6 was observed to be larger than that of its pure counterpart. The optical properties of these films were investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy, revealing essential parameters such as the bandgap energy (Eg), refractive index (n), extinction coefficients (k), and dielectric constant. While the pure film exhibited an Eg of 1.91 eV, the Al-doped film demonstrated a slightly lower Eg of 1.82 eV. Utilization of these films in solar cell fabrication yielded intriguing results. The J-V curve shows that the pure solar cell displayed a short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 5.01 mA/cm2, a fill factor (FF) of 0.67, an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.89 V, and an efficiency of 3.02%. Al doping led to improvements, with an increase in Voc to 0.91 V, FF to 0.71, and Jsc to 5.29 mA/cm2. Consequently, the overall efficiency surged to 3.40%, marking a substantial 12.5% enhancement compared with the pure solar cell. These findings underscore the efficacy of Al doping in enhancing the performance of Cs2AgBiBr6-based solar cells.
Emerging Alkali Metal Ion (li+, Na+, K+ and Rb+) Doped Perovskite Films for Efficient Solar Cells: Recent Advances and Prospects

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite materials have drawn worldwide attention for application in a variety of optoelectronic devices, especially in the emerging photovoltaic devices. In recent years, remarkable progress has been achieved in the device performance and stability. The optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites can be further tuned by ion doping. Herein, a comprehensive review of the incorporation of alkali metal ions (Li+, Na+, K+ and Rb+) in emerging perovskite solar cells for a longer carrier lifetime, lower interfacial defect density, faster charge transfer, no hysteresis, higher stability and higher power conversion efficiency is presented. The detailed mechanism behind these beneficial effects has been discussed in terms of electronic properties, film morphology, energy level alignment, carrier recombination dynamics and stability. On the basis of these latest advances and breakthroughs in alkali ion doped perovskite thin films, future research directions and prospects are also discussed, which include further understanding of the underlying photophysical mechanism and extension to other optoelectronic devices where a longer carrier lifetime and lower trap density are needed.
Performance Improvement of AgBiI4 Solar Cells by a Lewis Base Thiourea Additive

Abstract:Silver bismuth iodide (Ag-Bi-I) is considered to be a potential photovoltaic material as an eco-friendly semiconductor with a suitable band gap and high stability. However, the reported highest PCE is still far below the ideal value, and the quality of the AgxBiyIx+3y film deserves to be further improved. Herein, we introduce a facile strategy to control the crystallization of AgBiI4 by adding Lewis base additives thiourea (TU) to the AgBiI4 precursor solution. The result indicates that coordination between TU and AgBiI4 precursor solution improves the crystallization, reduces the defect density, and increases the carrier mobility of the AgBiI4 film. The treatment of the TU additive boosts light absorption, reduces charge recombination, and facilitates charge extraction, resulting in improved photovoltaic performance of the AgBiI4 solar cell. Compared to the control device, the treatment of 0.9 mM TU increases the PCE (similar to 1.87%) of the solar cell by 19.9% and improves the air stability of the solar cell.

Abstract:Controlled doping for adjustable material polarity and charge carrier concentration is the basis of semiconductor materials and devices, and it is much more difficult to achieve in ionic semiconductors (e.g., ZnO and GaN) than in covalent semiconductors (e.g., Si and Ge), due to the high intrinsic defect density in ionic semiconductors. The organic-inorganic perovskite material, which is frenetically being researched for applications in solar cells and beyond, is also an ionic semiconductor. Here we present the Ag-incorporated organicinorganic perovskite films and planar heterojunction solar cells. Partial substitution of Pb2+ by Ag+ leads to improved film morphology, crystallinity, and carrier dynamics as well as shifted Fermi level and reduced electron concentration. Consequently, in planar heterojunction photovoltaic devices with inverted stacking structure, Ag incorporation results in an enhancement of the power conversion efficiency from 16.0% to 18.4% in MAPbI(3) based devices and from 11.2% to 15.4% in MAPbI(3-x)Cl(x) based devices. Our work implies that Ag incorporation is a feasible route to adjust carrier concentrations in solution-processed perovskite materials in spite of the high concentration of intrinsic defects.

Abstract:Doping of alkali metals in precursor solutions demonstrates an effective strategy to achieve high efficiency Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 solar cells. The properties of doped films are related to alkali metal radius. Smaller alkali atoms are beneficial for increasing carrier concentration, whereas larger atoms are conducive to grain growth. Over 8% efficiency of K-doped Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 solar cell with optimized CdS thickness is realized.

Abstract:Cs2AgBiBr6 having a double perovskite structure is expected to achieve non-lead and stable optoelectronic devices, and has received wide attention recently. A strategy for improving of perovskite films via Rubidium cation (Rb+) is for the first time reported. When Rb+ was incorporated into Cs2AgBiBr6 to form (Cs1-xRbx)(2)AgBiBr6, the absorption at long wavelength was enhanced and the density of defect state was reduced without changing the crystal lattice. Furthermore, the mechanism of Rb+ doping to improve double perovskites and the optimal doping ratio was studied in this report. The average power conversion efficiency of doped devices is nearly 15% higher than that of standard devices from 20 devices of each group. Moreover, in the champion device, the power conversion efficiency achieved 1.52% with a high fill factory of 0.788.

Abstract:Among lead-free halide double perovskites, Cs2AgBiBr6 is a potential alternative to substitute toxic and unstable organic-inorganic lead-based halide perovskites. However, the film forming ability and wide indirect bandgap have impeded its applications. Herein, we investigate to use MoS2 nanoflakes as a hole transport interlayer to improve the crystallinity of Cs2AgBiBr6, tailor energy level alignments and enhance the stability of solar cells. With the addition of the MoS2 nanoflakes, the Cs2AgBiBr6-based solar cell has a power conversion efficiency of 4.17% with an open circuit voltage of 1.10 V and short-circuit current of 6.12 mA cm−2. This work would provide a new approach for developing all inorganic lead-free Cs2AgBiBr6-based solar cells with high power conversion efficiency and good stability.

Abstract:B-site doping with bismuth ion (Bi3+) is adopted to enhance the quality and stability of CsSnI3 perovskite. The partial displacement of Sn2+ with Bi3+ can not only improve the morphology, crystallinity, and stability of CsSnI3 perovskite film, but also reduce the trap density of CsSnI3 perovskite. Consequently, the fabricated perovskite solar cell with Bi3+-doped CsSnI3 perovskite deliver a high power conversion efficiency of 6.11 %, which is increased by 77 % compared to the efficiency of the control cell. In addition, the device without any encapsulation preserves over 72 % of its initial efficiency after storage in ambient condition for 240 h.

Abstract:As the initial synthesized colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are generally capped with insulating ligands, ligand exchange strategies are essential in the fabrication of CQD films for solar cells, which can regulate the surface chemical states of CQDs to make them more suitable for thin-film optoelectronic devices. However, uncontrollable surface adsorption of water molecules during the ligand exchange process introduces new defect sites, thereby impairing the resultant device performance, which attracts more efforts devoted to it but remains a puzzle. Here, we develop a solvent-engineering-assisted ligand exchange strategy to revamp the surface adsorption, improve the exchange efficiency, and modulate the surface chemistry for the environmentally friendly lead-free silver bismuth disulfide (AgBiS2) CQDs. The optimized AgBiS2 CQD solar cells deliver an outstanding champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 8.95% and improved long-term stability. Our strategy is less environment-dependent and can produce solar cells with negligible performance variance for several batches across several months. Our work demonstrates the critical role of solvents for ligand exchange in the surface chemistry of CQDs and the realization of high-performance photovoltaic devices in a highly reproducible manner.
Band Matching Strategy for All-Inorganic Cs2AgBiBr6 Double Perovskite Solar Cells with High Photovoltage

Abstract:The lead-free double perovskite has been proven to be one of the promising alternatives to solve the stability and toxicity problems of lead-based organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells. Here, high-quality Cs2AgBiBr6 double perovskite films with large grains and smooth surface have been prepared through a sequential-vapor-deposition method, and a low-cost and eco-friendly Cu2O film with a suitable energy level and good electrical properties was prepared as an efficient hole transport layer by vacuum vapor deposition for the first time. The Cu2O-based devices achieve a champion power conversion efficiency increasing from 1.03 to 1.52% and an enhancement of photovoltage from 1.083 to 1.198 V compared with their organic counterparts. More importantly, the Cu2O-based devices have excellent stability; they maintained the initial 96% efficiency under environmental conditions after 33 days of unpackaged storage. These results also point out the direction for the further development of these new promising perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Silver bismuth iodides (AgaBibIa+3b) are nontoxic and comparatively cheap photovoltaic materials, but their wide bandgaps and downshifted valence band edges limit their performance as light absorbers in solar cells. Herein, a strategy is introduced to tune the optoelectronic properties of AgaBibIa+3b by partial anionic substitution with the sulfide dianion. A consistent narrowing of the bandgap by 0.1 eV and an upshift of the valence band edge by 0.1–0.3 eV upon modification with sulfide are demonstrated for AgBiI4, Ag2BiI5, Ag3BiI6, and AgBi2I7 compositions. Solar cells based on silver bismuth sulfoiodides embedded into a mesoporous TiO2 electron‐transporting scaffold, and a poly[bis(4‐phenyl)(2,4,6‐trimethylphenyl)amine] hole‐transporting layer significantly outperform devices based on sulfide‐free materials, mainly due to enhancements in the photocurrent by up to 48%. A power conversion efficiency of 5.44 ± 0.07% (Jsc = 14.6 ± 0.1 mA cm−2; Voc = 569 ± 3 mV; fill factor = 65.7 ± 0.3%) under 1 sun irradiation and stability under ambient conditions for over a month are demonstrated. The results reported herein indicate that further improvements should be possible with this new class of photovoltaic materials upon advances in the synthetic procedures and an increase in the level of sulfide anionic substitution. A new class of inorganic photovoltaic materials, silver bismuth iodide sulfides, is introduced. The optoelectronic properties of these compounds can be tuned by variation of the sulfide to iodide ratio. Thin solar cells based on AgaBibIa+3b−2xSx light harvesters exhibit power conversion efficiencies above 5%, are stable under ambient conditions and can be produced on the centimeter‐size scale.

Abstract:Bismuth oxysulfide (Bi2O2S) has been demonstrated as a potential candidate for photovoltaic material because of favorite band gap (1.5 eV), effective charge dissociation, high carrier mobility, and long carrier lifetime. In this work, we synthesis the Bi2O2S nanocrystals by hydrothermal method, and incorporate Bi2O2S nanocrystals as a third component into poly[[4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo [1,2-b:4,5-b'] dithiophene-2,6-diyl] [3-fluoro-2-(2-ethylhexy) carbonyl] thieno [3,4-b] thiophenediyl]] (PTB7):acceptor [6,6]-pheny C71-butyric acid methy ester (PC71BM) binary polymer solar cells (PSCs). The results show that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ternary PSCs is obviously improved by 21.8% in comparison with binary PSCs (from 8.79% to 10.71%) by adding 1 wt% Bi2O2S nanocrystals. Introduction of Bi2O2S nanocrystals into the PTB7:PC71BM system can expand absorption range of sunlight in the PSCs, effectively enhance the crystallinity of PTB7 and optimize the surface morphology of photoactive layer, which leads to more efficient photon harvesting, enhances exciton dissociation, accelerates charge carrier transport and reduces charge recombination. Moreover, the addition of appropriate amounts of Bi2O2S nanocrystals into PTB7:PC71BM can effectively improve the lifetime of PSCs due to the improvement of crystallinity of PTB7. This work demonstrates the great potential use of bismuth compounds for photovoltaic devices fields.

Abstract:The CsBi3I10 (CBI) semiconductor as a light absorber emerges as a promising alternative to lead-based perovskites owing to its low toxicity, good stability, and satisfying physical properties. However, CBI exhibits an uncontrollable crystallization process, poor film morphology, high defect density, and short carrier lifetime, which lead to inferior optoelectronic properties, limiting its practical application in solar cell devices. Here, the Sb doping strategy is successfully developed for CBI films by a one-step antisolvent-free fabrication method. It is found that Sb incorporation in binary CsBi3–x Sb x I10 can modulate the crystallization kinetics and optimize the film quality. As a result, polycrystalline films with high density and few pinholes are obtained to enable the enhancement of light absorbance, reduction of defects, suppression of nonradiative recombination, and increase of surface hydrophobicity. The solar cells based on the CsBi2.7Sb0.3I10 film show a remarkably improved power conversion efficiency of 0.82% compared to that of pristine CBI (0.22%), which is among the highest reported efficiencies for CBI-based thin-film solar cells. Moreover, unencapsulated devices based on Sb-doped CBI exhibit outstanding environmental stability and moisture tolerance. This work not only offers insights into understanding the binary Bi-based materials but also provides a new way to fabricate efficient and stable Bi-based solar cells.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells offer tremendous potential for simple and low cost solution based fabrication with high power conversion efficiency. This work focused on adding an optimized amount of additive tetra-n-butylammoinum triiodide (TBAI(3)) into the precursor PbI2 layer to improve the performance of perovskite solar cells. UV-vis absorption spectra exhibited an enhancement in the absorbance of perovskite films while AFM images showed smoother MAPbI(3) film after adding TBAI(3). X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements indicated that TBAI(3) acted as a polar Lewis base, forming an adduct with the Lewis acid Pb2+, increasing PbI2 solubility, and enhancing crystal growth of perovskite. Current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics and transient photocurrent measurements showed that the TBAI(3) dopant achieved an increase in short circuit current density (J(sc)) and open circuit voltage (V-oc) and a decrease in the charge transport time compared to the reference cell without any additive. Perovskite solar cell efficiency was enhanced from 11.18% to 14.85% by adding TBAI(3) dopant to the PbI2 precursor.

Abstract:Bismuth triiodide (BiI3) is a particularly promising absorber material for inorganic thin-film solar cells due to its merits of nontoxicity and low cost. However, one key factor that limits the efficiency of BiI3 solar cells is the film morphology, which is strongly correlated with the trap states of the BiI3 film. Herein, we report a coordination engineering strategy by using Lewis base dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to induce the formation of a stable BiI3(DMSO)2 complex for controlling the morphology of BiI3 films. Density functional theory calculations further provide a theoretical framework for understanding the interaction of the BiI3(DMSO)2 complex with BiI3. The obtained BiI3(DMSO)2 complex could assist the fabrication of highly uniform and pinhole-free films with preferred crystallographic orientation. This high-quality film enables reduced trap densities, a suppressed charge recombination, and improved carrier mobility. In addition, the use of copper(I) thiocyanate (CuSCN) as a hole transport layer improves the charge transport, enabling the realization of solar cells with a record power conversion efficiency of 1.80% and a champion fill factor of 51.5%. Our work deepens the insights into controlling the morphology of BiI3 thin films through the coordination engineering strategy and paves the way toward further improving the photovoltaic performances of BiI3 solar cells.

Abstract:The additive of 2‐py with a long alkyl chain is used to replace tBP, and 2‐py can promote the dissolution of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide salt in the hole transport layer precursor solution with no corrosion to the lead‐free Ag2BiI5 perovskite film. Ag2BiI5 perovskite solar cells based on 2‐py additive show enhanced stability and photoelectric performance. Fabrication of air‐stable Pb‐free solar cells using the Ag2BiI5 absorber has recently attracted extensive attention. 4‐tert‐Butylpyridine (tBP) is mainly used as an additive in the hole transport layer (HTL). However, tBP can strongly destroy Ag2BiI5 perovskite structure due to the formation of the tBP‐BiI3 complex. Herein, 2‐pentyl pyridine (2‐py) is selected to replace the tBP in the Spiro‐OMeTAD precursor solution, which will promote the dissolution of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide salt in the HTL precursor solution but not destroy the crystal structure due to more considerable steric hindrance. By judiciously choosing 2‐py as the additives, the best solar cell device achieves a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.32% under standard one sun (AM1.5). The devices also show excellent long‐term air stability and maintain 95% of their initial PCE even after 840 h.

Abstract:The double perovskite material Cs2AgBiBr6, characterized by high stability, low toxicity, and excellent optoelectronic properties, has emerged as a promising alternative to lead-based halide perovskites in photovoltaic applications. However, its photovoltaic conversion efficiency after integration into solar cell devices is less than 3%, significantly lower than that of traditional perovskite solar cells. While alloying methods have been widely applied in the design of photovoltaic materials, their specific role in modulating the lifetime of photo-generated charge carriers in double-perovskite solar cells remains inadequately explored. In this study, through nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations, the excited-state dynamics properties of Cs2AgBiBr6 and alloyed Cs2AgSb0.375Bi0.625Br6 samples were compared. The results revealed that the introduction of Sb ions into the double perovskite structure induces lattice deformation upon heating to 300 K, leading to distortion of Bi-Br bonds and enhanced valence band delocalization. Using the decoherence-induced surface hopping method, the capture and recombination processes of charge carriers between different states were simulated. It was suggested that hole lifetime serves as the primary limiting factor for carrier lifetime in Cs2AgBiBr6, and replacing 0.375 proportion of Bi with Sb can decelerate the hole capture rate, extending carrier lifetime by 3–4 times. This study demonstrates that alloying offers a viable approach to optimizing the optoelectronic performance of Cs2AgBiBr6 perovskite, thereby advancing the application of double perovskite materials in the field of photovoltaics.

Abstract:Inorganic quantum dots (QDs) are introduced into organometallic dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to further improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSCs. AgBiS 2 quantum dots were prepared through depositing alternately via the successive ion layer absorption reaction (SILAR) route on TiO 2 porous film, which then was sensitized with N719 dye. The introduction of AgBiS 2 QDs can enhance the efficient charge transfer, inhibiting the electron-hole recombination and improving the electron injection efficiency of carrier injecting into TiO 2 layer. According to the analysis results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and current density-voltage (J-V) curve, the introduction of AgBiS 2 QDs can effectively improve the photovoltaic performance, and under one-sun irradiation, the optimum cell sample possessed the short-circuit current density of 14.87 mA·cm − 2 , open-circuit voltage of 0.78 V, and PCE of 5.19% that is 68% greater than that of bare DSSCs.
