Abstract:With the complexity and high demands on quality assurance (QA) of photon beam radiation therapy, end-to-end (E2E) QA is necessary to validate the entire treatment workflow from pre-treatment imaging to beam delivery. A polymer gel dosimeter is a promising tool for three-dimensional (3D) dose distribution measurement. The purpose of this study is to design a fast “one delivery” polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantom with a polymer gel dosimeter for the E2E QA test of the photon beam. The one delivery phantom is composed of ten calibration cuvettes for the calibration curve measurement, two 10 cm gel dosimeter inserts for the dose distribution measurement, and three 5.5 cm gel dosimeters for the square field measurement. The one delivery phantom holder is comparable in size and shape to that of a human thorax and abdomen. In addition, an anthropomorphic head phantom was employed to measure the patient-specific dose distribution of a VMAT plan. The E2E dosimetry was verified by undertaking the whole RT procedure (immobilization, CT simulation, treatment planning, phantom set-up, imaged-guided registration, and beam delivery). The calibration curve, field size, and patient-specific dose were measured with a polymer gel dosimeter. The positioning error can be mitigated with the one-delivery PMMA phantom holder. The delivered dose measured with a polymer gel dosimeter was compared with the planned dose. The gamma passing rate is 86.64% with the MAGAT-f gel dosimeter. The results ascertain the feasibility of the one delivery phantom with a polymer gel dosimeter for a photon beam in E2E QA. The QA time can be reduced with the designed one delivery phantom.
A basic study of some normoxic polymer gel dosimeters

Abstract:Polymer gel dosimeters offer a wide range of potential applications in the three-dimensional verification of complex dose distribution such as in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). Until now, however, polymer gel dosimeters have not been widely used in the clinic. One of the reasons is that they are difficult to manufacture. As the polymerization in polymer gels is inhibited by oxygen, all free oxygen has to be removed from the gels. For several years this was achieved by bubbling nitrogen through the gel solutions and by filling the phantoms in a glove box that is perfused with nitrogen. Recently another gel formulation was proposed in which oxygen is bound in a metallo-organic complex thus removing the problem of oxygen inhibition. The proposed gel consists of methacrylic acid, gelatin, ascorbic acid, hydroquinone and copper(II)sulphate and is given the acronym MAGIC gel dosimeter. These gels are fabricated under normal atmospheric conditions and are therefore called 'normoxic' gel dosimeters. In this study, a chemical analysis on the MAGIC gel was performed. The composition of the gel was varied and its radiation response was evaluated. The role of different chemicals and the reaction kinetics are discussed. It was found that ascorbic acid alone was able to bind the oxygen and can thus be used as an anti-oxidant in a polymer gel dosimeter. It was also found that the anti-oxidants N-acetyl-cysteine and tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium were effective in scavenging the oxygen. However, the rate of oxygen scavenging is dependent on the anti-oxidant and its concentration with tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium being the most reactive anti-oxidants. Potentiometric oxygen measurements in solution provide an easy way to get a first impression on the rate of oxygen scavenging. It is shown that cupper(II)sulphate operates as a catalyst in the oxidation of ascorbic acid. We, therefore, propose some new normoxic gel formulations that have a less complicated chemical formulation than the MAGIC gel.

Abstract:Dynamically evolving radiotherapy instruments require advancements in compatible 3D dosimetry systems. This paper reports on such tools for the coincidence test of the mechanical and radiation isocenter for a medical accelerator as part of the quality assurance in routine radiotherapy practice. Three-dimensional polymer gel dosimeters were used in combination with 3D reading by iterative cone beam computed tomography and 3D data processing using the polyGeVero-CT software package. Different polymer gel dosimeters were used with the following acronyms: VIP, PAGAT, MAGIC, and NIPAM. The same scheme was used for each dosimeter: (i) irradiation sensitivity test for the iterative cone beam computed tomography reading to determine the appropriate monitor unit for irradiation, and (ii) verification of the chosen irradiation conditions by a star-shot 2D irradiation of each 3D dosimeter in the direction of performing the test. This work concludes with the optimum monitor unit per beam for each selected 3D dosimeter, delivers schemes for quick and easy determination of the radiation isocenter and performing the coincidence test.

Abstract:The use of polymer gels in the radiation dosimetry field is rapidly increasing due to the possibility of 3 dimensional (3D) dosimetry. The aim of this study is to produce a new polymer gel with high dose sensitivity. This involved the production of polymer gel compositions containing different percentages of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomer and Di(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (DEGDMA) and 1-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone (VP) crosslinkers and these gels were irradiated with radiation dose between 0.5 Gy to 11 Gy, using 6 MV X-ray energy of the medical linear accelerator. The degree of polymerization was assessed by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on the R 2 -dose response. Then, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images of the gels were taken. Polymer gels consisting of DEGDMA as crosslinker and Tetrakis (Hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride (THPC) as antioxidant were found to have a potential for use in radiation therapy dosimeter. The concentration of HEMA showing the most effective dose response was identified as 12 wt%. It was found that HEMA polymer gels containing DEGDMA crosslinker provide a better dose response than HEMA and HEMA-VP normoxic polymer gels.

Dose measurements of simulated tumour movement during respiration using a polymer gel dosimeter

Abstract:During radiotherapy treatment, there is always considerable risk that the timing of the treatment delivery and the volume movement results in degradation or undesired heterogeneities in the dose distribution. As there may be a simultaneous movement of the tumour, patient, and treatment machine, it is essential to minimize the uncertainties owing to motion in a clinical setting. Despite all clinical settings, tumour movement due to respiration is most important, because moving tumours can follow complex trajectories, that may affect patient treatment results, and cause difficulties in dose assessment. In this study, the effect of vertical movement on dose distribution was investigated. To overcome motion-related dosimetry challenges radiation-sensitive normoxic Methacrylic acid gels (nMAG) were used for dose evaluation. The selection of the gel dosimetry method was based on nMAG gel's ability to record corresponding target volume expansion via polymerized gel volume obtained during performed irradiation with simulated movement. Three identical sample batches of nMAG gels have been produced at once. Corresponding samples from each batch were irradiated to the same doses from the dose range up to 36 Gy and experimental results were averaged. A 6 MV FFF photon beam collimated to 1.0 cm 2 was used for irradiation. X-ray CT and NMR imaging procedures were used for the dose profile and dose sensitivity evaluation by applying a gamma passing rate criteria of 3 %/3 mm. The movement of the gel was responsible for the reduction of the peak maximum dose by approximately 13.6 %. The shape and uniformity of the dose profiles were changing when applying different irradiation scenarios. Dose sensitivity evaluated in dynamic mode using MRI-R2 technique was 0.025 s - 1 Gy - 1 . This study has shown that polymer gels are sensitive enough to detect distorted dose distributions and evaluate the doses, obtained due to the movement of the irradiated target.

Abstract:Abstract Cancer prevention and treatment are currently the focus of most research. Dose verification is an important step for reducing the improper dose deposition during radiotherapy. To mend the traditional gel dosimeters for 3D dose verification, a novel rare-earth nanoparticle-based composite gel was prepared, which has good radioluminescence property and reusability. It is a promising phantom material for the new 3D gel dosimeter. TEM, DLS, FT-IR, TGA, and spectrofluorometer were used to determine the chemical structure, micromorphology, and optical performance. Compared to the traditional gel dosimeters, the composite gel has a good linear relationship between the light intensity excited by X-ray and the tube current. Furthermore, it may measure the dose distribution immediately in situ , which reduces errors and saves time. This work provides a new idea for the research of 3D gel dosimeters and promotes the safe and effective use of radiotherapy.

Abstract:A previously reported X-ray computed tomography (CT) based polymer gel dosimeter required a long waiting time before measurement and analysis. Current radiotherapy quality assurance needs both high-efficiency and high-accuracy measurements in a multidimensional system. Thus, we developed a new dGEL™ X-ray CT-based polymer gel dosimeter with a rapid dose response and room-temperature stability. Here we report characterization of the gel dosimeter and its validation in a volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) application. All samples of dGEL™ were manufactured by a commercial company. The final gel solution was poured into cylindrical jars. All gel imaging was performed using a Varian TrueBeam cone-beam CT system. We found that increases in CT number were similar throughout the irradiated gel and that a rapid 5 HU increment could be measured immediately after a radiation dose of 5–10 Gy. Intra- and inter-batch reproducibility were good over the range of 5–35 Gy, although there was a significant difference between the upper and lower regions of the gel. The gel response was independent of the energy of the irradiation (6 MV and 10 MV) and of the dose rate in the 400–2400 cGy min−1 range. The gel response was positively correlated with the dose up to 35 Gy. The VMAT irradiation compared well with the planned doses, yielding a gamma pass rate of more than 90 % for multiple slices at isocenter and off-center. The gel was a solid at room temperature, and its CT number increased rapidly after irradiation, thus enabling “on-line” dosimetry.

Abstract:The photon induced radical-initiated polymerization in polymer gels can be used for high-resolution tissue equivalent dosimeters in quality control of radiation therapy. The dose (D) distribution in radiation therapy can be measured as a change of the physical measurement parameter T2 using T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. The detection by T2 is relying on the local change of the molecular mobility due to local polymerization initiated by radicals generated by the ionizing radiation. The dosimetric signals R2 = 1/T2 of many of the current polymer gels are dose-rate dependent, which reduces the reliability of the gel for clinical use. A novel gel dosimeter, based on methacrylic acid, gelatin and the newly added dithiothreitol (MAGADIT) as an oxygen-scavenger was analyzed for basic properties, such as sensitivity, reproducibility, accuracy and dose-rate dependence. Dithiothreitol features no toxic classification with a difference to THPC and offers a stronger negative redox-potential than ascorbic acid. Polymer gels with three different concentration levels of dithiothreitol were irradiated with a preclinical research X-ray unit and MR-scanned (T2) for quantitative dosimetry after calibration. The polymer gel with the lowest concentration of the oxygen scavenger was about factor 3 more sensitive to dose as compared to the gel with the highest concentration. The dose sensitivity (α = ∆R2/∆D) of MAGADIT gels was significantly dependent on the applied dose rate D ̇ (≈48% reduction between D ̇ = 0.6 Gy/min and D ̇ = 4 Gy/min). However, this undesirable dose-rate effect reduced between 4–8 Gy/min (≈23%) and almost disappeared in the high dose-rate range (8 ≤ D ̇ ≤ 12 Gy/min) used in flattening-filter-free (FFF) irradiations. The dose response varied for different samples within one manufacturing batch within 3%–6% (reproducibility). The accuracy ranged between 3.5% and 7.9%. The impact of the dose rate on the spatial integrity is demonstrated in the example of a linear accelerator (LINAC) small sized 5 × 10 mm2 10 MV photon field. For MAGADIT the maximum shift in the flanks in this field is limited to about 0.8 mm at a FFF dose rate of 15 Gy/min. Dose rate sensitive polymer gels likely perform better at high dose rates; MAGADIT exhibits a slightly improved performance compared to the reference normoxic polymer gel methacrylic and ascorbic acid in gelatin initiated by copper (MAGIC) using ascorbic acid.

Abstract:Modern radiotherapy requires new approaches to dosimetry.The dosimeters must be able to assess the dose not only in a point but also in complex three-dimensional objects.Recently 3D Gel dosimetry using a tissue-equivalence phantom to record dose stereo-distribution then to acquire 3D dose data with MRI and optical evaluation techniques is a highly promising tool to address the emerging needs of radiotherapy dosimetry.An optical CT system used to scanning 3D dose distribution in a polymer gel has been designed.The optical CT system has a cone light beam(580nm) scanner,a CCD camera to acquire the project data and a PC for scan control and for mapping of 3D dose distributions.Scan time and reconstruct time,resolution and dose respond are practically satisfaction.The polymer gel dosimeter is a MAGIC phantom.The irradiation of gel dosimeter was performed using a 6 MV accelerator X-ray with a field size of 3 cm x 3 cm.The dose information is stable.The dose distribution map acquired is satisfaction.
Direct Response to Proton Beam Linear Energy Transfer (let) in A Novel Polymer Gel Dosimeter Formulation

Abstract:Linear energy transfer (LET) of clinical proton beams is an important parameter influencing the biological effects of radiation. This work demonstrates LET-induced response enhancement in novel formulations of polymer gel dosimeters, potentially useful for LET mapping of clinical proton beams. A series of four polymer gel dosimeters (labeled A through D), prepared based on the BANG3-Pro2 formulation, but with varying concentrations of polymerization modifiers, were irradiated by a clinical proton beam with a spread out Bragg peak modulation (SOBP) and read out using the OCTOPUS-IQ optical CT scanner. The evaluation of optical density profiles in the SOBP (constant physical dose) revealed response deviations at the distal end consistent with variations in gel composition. Maximum response deviations were as follows: −3% (under-response) for gel A, and over-response of 2%, 12%, and 17% for gels B, C, and D, respectively, relative to the mean dose in the center of the SOBP. This enhancement in optical response was correlated to LET by analytical calculations. Gels A and B showed no measurable dependence on LET. Gel C responded linearly in the limited range from 1.5 to 3.5 keV/μm. LET response of gel D was linear up to at least 5.5 keV/μm, with the threshold at about 1.3 keV/μm. These results suggest that it may be possible to develop a polymer gel system with direct optical response to LET for mapping of LET distributions for particle therapy beams.

Abstract:This study is an evaluation of the use of a N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM)-based x-ray CT polymer geldosimetry (PGD) system in the measurement of deformed dose. This work also compares dose that ismeasured by the gel dosimetry system to dose calculated by a novel deformable dose accumulationalgorithm, defDOSXYZnrc, that uses direct voxel tracking. Deformable gels were first irradiatedusing a single 3.5 × 5 cm 2 open field and the static dose was compared to defDOSXYZnrc as a controlmeasurement. Gel measurement was found to be in excellent agreement with defDOSXYZnrc in the staticcase with gamma passing rates of 94.5% using a 3%/3 mm criterion and 93.3% using a 3%/2 mmcriterion. Abstract:The percentage depth dose distributions in inhomogeneous phantoms with lung and bone equivalent media are studied. For lung equivalent media a Balsa wood is used, and for a soft bone equivalent media a compound material with epoxy resin, hardener and calcium carbonate is used. Polystyrene slabs put together with these materials are used as an inhomogeneous phantom. Dose measurements are performed with Gafchromic EBT film by using photon beams from 6MV CyberKnife at the Seoul Uridul Hospital. The cone sizes of the photon beams are varied from 5, 10 to 30 mm. As a simulation tool GEANT4 Monte Carlo code v9.4.p02 is used. When the Balsa wood is inserted in the phantom, the dose measured with EBT film is found to be significantly different from the dose without the EBT film in and beyond the Balsa wood region, particularly for small field sizes. On the other hand, when the soft bone equivalent material is inserted in the phantom, discrepancy between the dose measured with EBT film and the dose without EBT film can be seen only in the region of bone equivalent material. GEANT4 simulations are done with and without the EBT film to compare the simulation results with measurements. We find that the simulations including EBT film agree with the measurements for all the cases within an error of $2.2\%$. Also, we find the "doses to phantom" without the EBT film differ from the "doses to film" up to $29\%$, which shows that for accurate dose estimations for inhomogeneous phantoms with EBT film the presence of the EBT film needs to be taken into account properly in particular for small fields.
Dosimetric characteristics of 3D-printed and epoxy-based materials for particle therapy phantoms

Abstract:Objective: 3D printing has seen use in many fields of imaging and radiation oncology, but applications in (anthropomorphic) phantoms, especially for particle therapy, are still lacking. The aim of this work was to characterize various available 3D printing methods and epoxy-based materials with the specific goal of identifying suitable tissue surrogates for dosimetry applications in particle therapy. Methods: 3D-printed and epoxy-based mixtures of varying ratios combining epoxy resin, bone meal, and polyethylene powder were scanned in a single-energy computed tomography (CT), a dual-energy CT, and a μCT scanner. Their CT-predicted attenuation was compared to measurements in a 148.2 MeV proton and 284.7 MeV/u carbon ion beam. The sample homogeneity was evaluated in the respective CT images and in the carbon beam, additionally via widening of the Bragg peak. To assess long-term stability attenuation, size and weight measurements were repeated after 6–12 months. Results: Four 3D-printed materials, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene polylactic acid, fused deposition modeling printed nylon, and selective laser sintering printed nylon, and various ratios of epoxy-based mixtures were found to be suitable tissue surrogates. The materials' predicted stopping power ratio matched the measured stopping power ratio within 3% for all investigated CT machines and protocols, except for μCT scans employing cone beam CT technology. The heterogeneity of the suitable surrogate samples was adequate, with a maximum Bragg peak width increase of 11.5 ± 2.5%. The repeat measurements showed no signs of degradation after 6–12 months. Conclusion: We identified surrogates for soft tissue and low- to medium-density bone among the investigated materials. This allows low-cost, adaptable phantoms to be built for quality assurance and end-to-end tests for particle therapy.

Abstract:Several investigations have been carried out by a number of researchers over the past few years to evaluate the utility of imaging gel dosimeters for the three-dimensional measurement of radiation fields. These have been proposed to be of particular value in mapping radiation dose distributions associated with emerging and complex approaches to cancer treatment such as conformal (CRT), intensity modulated (IMRT), "gamma knife," and pencil beam radiotherapies. Imaging of the gels has been successfully accomplished with clinical MRI units and via laser-based optical scanning. However, neither of these methods is generally accessible to all potential users, limiting the broader study and implementation of this valuable tool. We report here the design, methodology, and results of a preliminary study carried out to evaluate the utility of a new, inexpensive, and simplified approach to tomographic imaging of gel radiation dosimeters. For the purpose of this initial investigation, an array of liquid scintillation vials was prepared, containing a ferrous sulphate xylenol orange (FSX) gelatin formulation. The FSX formulation undergoes a change in optical absorption characteristics following irradiation, and the resulting color change can be observed visually. The vials were irradiated individually to different doses. Three-dimensional imaging was accomplished by tomographic reconstruction from two-dimensional optical images acquired using a diffuse, fluorescent light source, a digital charge-coupled device camera, single-photon-emission-computed tomography software, and other simple components designed by the authors. The resulting transverse images were evaluated through a region-of-interest (ROI) analysis to obtain the average change in image density in each vial as a function of radiation dose. These measured ROI values were subjected to a linear regression analysis to fit them to a straight line, and to determine the goodness of fit. Results from multiple imaging trials are compared. The correlation coefficients obtained are typically on the order of 0.98, and the p value from analysis of variance is approximately 0.05, indicating a linear and reproducible response for the dosimeter formulation and imaging system.

3D Proton Bragg Peak Visualization and Spot Shape Measurement with Polymer Gel Dosimeters

Abstract:Proton pencil beam scanning is a dynamic beam delivery technique with excellent conformability to the tumor volume. The accuracy of spot size and scanning positions will have a significant effect on the delivered dose distribution. We employed polymer gel dosimeters to measure the spot size and the scanning positions for the Shanghai Advanced Proton Therapy facility (SAPT). Polymer gel dosimeters (MAGAT-f and PAGAT) were utilized to measure the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the beam spot at various depths on the basis of their MRI readouts. The correlation between the spot FWHM and standard deviation (σ) was analyzed at different depths. The measured Bragg peak range was compared with the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. Three-dimensional volume rendering of the Bragg peak was reconstructed for the 3D visualization to measure the spot size three-dimensionally. The R2 dose–response curve was investigated with polymer gel dosimeters. The deviations of the Bragg peak ranging between measurement and simulation were 0.13% and −0.53% for MAGAT-f and PAGAT, respectively. Our results ascertain the feasibility of a polymer gel dosimeter to measure the spot size and positions of a proton pencil beam.

Abstract:Modern radiotherapy delivers highly conformal dose distributions to irregularly shaped target volumes while sparing the surrounding normal tissue. Due to the complex planning and delivery techniques, dose verification and validation of the whole treatment workflow by end-to-end tests became much more important and polymer gel dosimeters are one of the few possibilities to capture the delivered dose distribution in 3D. The basic principles and formulations of gel dosimetry and its evaluation methods are described and the available studies validating device-specific geometrical parameters as well as the dose delivery by advanced radiotherapy techniques, such as 3D-CRT/IMRT and SRS treatments, the treatment of moving targets, online-adaptive MRgRT as well as proton and ion beam treatments, are reviewed. The present status and limitations as well as future challenges of polymer gel dosimetry for the validation of complex radiotherapy techniques are discussed.

Clinical applicability of Linac-integrated CBCT based NIPAM 3D dosimetry: a dual-institutional investigation

Abstract:Objective.To develop and benchmark a novel 3D dose verification technique consisting of polymer gel dosimetry (PGD) with cone-beam-CT (CBCT) readout through a two-institution study. The technique has potential for wide and robust applicability through reliance on CBCT readout.Approach. Three treatment plans (3-field, TG119-C-shape spine, 4-target SRS) were created by two independent institutions (Institutions A and B). A Varian Truebeam linear accelerator was used to deliver the plans to NIPAM polymer gel dosimeters produced at both institutions using an identical approach. For readout, a slow CBCT scan mode was used to acquire pre- and post-irradiation images of the gel (1 mm slice thickness). Independent gel analysis tools were used to process the PGD images (A: VistaAce software, B: in-house MATLAB code). Comparing planned and measured doses, the analysis involved a combination of 1D line profiles, 2D contour plots, and 3D global gamma maps (criteria ranging between 2%1 mm and 5%2 mm, with a 10% dose threshold).Main results. For all gamma criteria tested, the 3D gamma pass rates were all above 90% for 3-field and 88% for the SRS plan. For the C-shape spine plan, we benchmarked our 2% 2 mm result against previously published work using film analysis (93.4%). For 2%2 mm, 99.4% (Institution A data), and 89.7% (Institution B data) were obtained based on VistaAce software analysis, 83.7% (Institution A data), and 82.9% (Institution B data) based on MATLAB.Significance. The benchmark data demonstrate that when two institutions follow the same rigorous procedures gamma passing rates up to 99%, for 2%2 mm criteria can be achieved for substantively different treatment plans. The use of different software and calibration techniques may have contributed to the variation in the 3D gamma results. By sharing the data across institutions, we observe the gamma passing rate is more consistent within each pipeline, indicating the need for standardized analysis methods.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to design, manufacture, and test 3D printed quality assurance dosimetry phantoms for synchrotron brain cancer radiation therapy at the Australian synchrotron. Approach: Fabricated 3D printed phantoms from simple slab phantoms, a preclinical rat phantom, and an anthropomorphic head phantom were fabricated and characterized. Attenuation measurements of various polymers, ceramics and metals were acquired using synchrotron monochromatic micro-computed tomography (CT) imaging. Polylactic acid plus, VeroClear, Durable resin, and tricalcium phosphate were used in constructing the phantoms. Furthermore, 3D printed bone equivalent materials were compared relative to ICRU bone and hemihydrate plaster. Homogeneous and heterogeneous rat phantoms were designed and fabricated using tissue-equivalent materials. Geometric accuracy, CT imaging, and consistency were considered. Moreover, synchrotron broad-beam X-rays were delivered using a 3 Tesla superconducting multipole wiggler field for four sets of synchrotron radiation beam qualities. Dose measurements were acquired using a PinPoint ionization chamber and compared relative to a water phantom and a RMI457 Solid Water phantom. Experimental depth doses were compared relative to calculated doses using a Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation. Main results: Polylactic Acid (PLA+) shows to have a good match with the attenuation coefficient of ICRU water, while both tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite have good attenuation similarity with ICRU bone cortical. PLA+ material can be used as substitute to RMI457 slabs for reference dosimetry with a maximum difference of 1.84%. Percent depth dose measurement also shows that PLA+ has the best match with water and RMI457 within ±2.2% and ±1.6%, respectively. Overall, PLA+ phantoms match with RMI457 phantoms within ±3%. Significance and conclusion: The fabricated phantoms are excellent tissue equivalent equipment for synchrotron radiation dosimetry quality assurance measurement. Both the rat and the anthropomorphic head phantoms are useful in synchrotron brain cancer radiotherapy dosimetry, experiments, and future clinical translation of synchrotron radiotherapy and imaging.

Abstract:Intensity modulated radiation therapy(IMRT)is one of the most advanced radiation treatment technologies. However,it is complicated and there are many immature aspects in the optimization calculate of three-dimension treatment planning system.Therefore,we have to verify the dosimeter for guaranteeing the accuracy of the dosage before treating.The 3D dose verification of the intensity modulated radiation therapy was studied, using polymers.First,gels were prepared with water,acryl-amide,gelatin,BIS and THPC.Next,global flask(Simulating phantom)was irradiated with intensity modulated radiation therapy,and the test tubes in the same batch are scaled with ~(60)Coγ-rays.Then,the curves of 2D and 3D dose distribution of target region were obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR).The results show that these new gel dosimeters can accurately present the shape of target region and get the 3D dose distribution,with obvious dose distribution in high gradient regions.
Enhancing Tissue Equivalence in 7Li Heavy Ion Therapy with MC Algorithm Optimized Polymer-Based Bioinks

Abstract:The unique physical properties of heavy ion beams, particularly their distinctive depth-dose distribution and sharp lateral dose reduction profiles, have led to their widespread adoption in tumor therapy worldwide. However, the physical properties of heavy ion beams must be investigated to deliver a sufficient dose to tumors without damaging organs at risk. These studies should be performed on phantoms made of biomaterials that closely mimic human tissue. Polymers can serve as soft tissue substitutes and are suitable materials for building radiological phantoms due to their physical, mechanical, biological, and chemical properties. Extensive research, development, and applications of polymeric biomaterials have been encouraged due to these properties. In this study, we investigated the ionization, recoils, phonon release, collision events, and lateral straggle properties of polymeric biomaterials that closely resemble soft tissue using lithium-ion beams and Monte Carlo Transport of Ions in Matter simulation. The results indicated that the Bragg peak position closest to soft tissue was achieved with a 7.3% difference in polymethylmethacrylate, with an average recoils value of 10.5%. Additionally, average values of 33% were observed in collision events and 22.6% in lateral straggle. A significant contribution of this study to the existing literature lies in the exploration of secondary interactions alongside the assessment of linear energy transfer induced by the 7Li beam used for treatment. Furthermore, we analyzed the tissue-equivalent properties of polymer biomaterials using heavy ion beams, taking into account phonon release resulting from ionization, recoils, lateral straggle, and all other interactions. This approach allows for the evaluation of the most suitable polymeric biomaterials for heavy ion therapy while considering the full range of interactions involved.
