Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:We prove a natural generalization of the classical three gap theorem, for rotations on adelic tori. Our proof is an adaptation to the adeles of the lattice based approach to gaps problems in Diophantine approximation originally introduced by Marklof and Strömbergsson.

Abstract:The Ionescu--Wainger multiplier theorem establishes good $L^p$ bounds for Fourier multiplier operators localized to major arcs; it has become an indispensible tool in discrete harmonic analysis. We give a simplified proof of this theorem with more explicit constants (removing logarithmic losses that were present in previous versions of the theorem), and give a more general variant involving adelic Fourier multipliers. We also establish a closely related adelic sampling theorem that shows that $\ell^p(\Z^d)$ norms of functions with Fourier transform supported on major arcs are comparable to the $L^p(\A_\Z^d)$ norm of their adelic counterparts.

Abstract:We show that the scaling site $X_{\mathbb Q}$ and its periodic orbits $C_p$ of length $\log p$ offer a geometric framework for the well-known analogy between primes and knots. The role of the maximal abelian cover of $X_{\mathbb Q}$ is played by the quotient map $\pi:X_{\mathbb Q}^{ab}\to X_{\mathbb Q}$ from the adele class space $X_{\mathbb Q}^{ab}:={\mathbb Q}^\times \backslash {\mathbb A}_{\mathbb Q}$ to $X_{\mathbb Q}=X_{\mathbb Q}^{ab}/{\hat{\mathbb Z}^*}$. The inverse image $\pi^{-1}(C_p)\subset X_{\mathbb Q}^{ab}$ of the periodic orbit $C_p$ is canonically isomorphic to the mapping torus of the multiplication by the Frobenius at $p$ in the abelianized étale fundamental group $\pi_1^{e t}({\rm Spec} \, {\mathbb Z}_{(p)})^{ab}$ of the spectrum of the local ring ${\mathbb Z}_{(p)}$, thus exhibiting the linking of $p$ with all other primes. In the same way as the Grothendieck theory of the étale fundamental group of schemes is an extension of Galois theory to schemes, the adele class space gives, as a covering of the scaling site, the corresponding extension of the class field isomorphism for $\mathbb Q$ to schemes related to ${\rm Spec} \,\mathbb Z$.

Adelic Rogers' formula and an application

Abstract:Recently, Seungki Kim proved an extension of Rogers' mean value formula to the adeles of an arbitrary number field. In this paper we give a new proof Kim's formula, and give a criterion ensuring convergence in this formula. We also discuss one application, namely diophantine approximation over imaginary quadratic number fields with congruence conditions, where we prove an analogue of a famous counting result of W. M. Schimdt.

Abstract:In this short paper I consider relation between measurements, numbers and p-adic mathematical physics. p-Adic numbers are not result of measurements, but nevertheless they play significant role in description of some systems and phenomena. We illustrate their ability for applications referring to some sectors of p-adic mathematical physics and related topics, in particular, to string theory and the genetic code.

A tour d'horizon of de Casteljau's work

Abstract:Whilst Paul de Casteljau is now famous for his fundamental algorithm of curve and surface approximation, little is known about his other findings. This article offers an insight into his results in geometry, algebra and number theory. Related to geometry, his classical algorithm is reviewed as an index reduction of a polar form. This idea is used to show de Casteljau's algebraic way of smoothing, which long went unnoticed. We will also see an analytic polar form and its use in finding the intersection of two curves. The article summarises unpublished material on metric geometry. It includes theoretical advances, e.g., the 14-point strophoid or a way to link Apollonian circles with confocal conics, and also practical applications such as a recurrence for conjugate mirrors in geometric optics. A view on regular polygons leads to an approximation of their diagonals by golden matrices, a generalisation of the golden ratio. Relevant algebraic findings include matrix quaternions (and anti-quaternions) and their link with Lorentz' equations. De Casteljau generalised the Euclidean algorithm and developed an automated method for approximating the roots of a class of polynomial equations. His contributions to number theory not only include aspects on the sum of four squares as in quaternions, but also a view on a particular sum of three cubes. After a review of a complete quadrilateral in a heptagon and its angles, the paper concludes with a summary of de Casteljau's key achievements. The article contains a comprehensive bibliography of de Casteljau's works, including previously unpublished material.

Reflecting on beauty: the aesthetics of mathematical discovery

Abstract:Mathematical research is often motivated by the desire to reach a beautiful result or to prove it in an elegant way. Mathematician's work is thus strongly influenced by his aesthetic judgments. However, the criteria these judgments are based on remain unclear. In this article, we focus on the concept of mathematical beauty, as one of the central aesthetic concepts in mathematics. We argue that beauty in mathematics reveals connections between apparently non-related problems or areas and allows a better and wider insight into mathematical reality as a whole. We also explain the close relationship between beauty and other important notions such as depth, elegance, simplicity, fruitfulness, and others.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply Clausen-Scholze's theory of solid modules to the existence of adelic decompositions for schemes of finite type over $\mathbb{Z}$. Specifically, we use the six-functor formalism for solid modules to define the skeletal filtration of a scheme, and then we show that decomposing a quasi-coherent sheaf with respect to this filtration gives rise to a new construction of the Beilinson-Parshin adelic resolution. As an application of the adelic decomposition combined with some nice completeness properties of the solid tensor product, we prove a version of adelic descent for solid quasi-coherent sheaves.

Abstract:This review is devoted to dynamical systems in fields of $p$-adic numbers: origin of $p$-adic dynamics in $p$-adic theoretical physics (string theory, quantum mechanics and field theory, spin glasses), continuous dynamical systems and discrete dynamical systems. The main attention is paid to discrete dynamical systems - iterations of maps in the field of $p$-adic numbers (or their algebraic extensions): conjugate maps, ergodicity, random dynamical systems, behaviour of cycles, holomorphic dynamics. dynamical systems in finite fields. We also discuss applications of $p$-adic discrete dynamical systems to cognitive sciences and psychology.

You should not miss their eccentric proposal of relating Bell’s theorem to the Baby Monster group. Their hyperbolic polygons show a considerable singularity/cusp structure that our modern age of computers is able to capture. Henri Poincaré would have been happy to see it.

The typography is unusually good, and is very creditable to all concerned, such symbols as the square of a1, or even of a′, being printed in a satisfactory way, which English printers might imitate with advantage. There are a few terms here and there which are ungrateful to an English ear; “involutionary” or “involutional” would be more agreeable to analogy than “involutory,” and “nappe” is retained instead of being rendered by “sheet.” But these are trifles, and those of us who have no French can now study a treatise which is eminently lucid and attractive, as well as being up to date and sufficiently rigorous for the purpose it is designed to fulfil.
