Abstract:This essay explores the impact of automated proof construction on three key areas of mathematical cognition: on how we judge the role one piece of mathematics plays in another, on how we make mistakes in reasoning about mathematical objects, and on how we understand what our theorems are truly about. It concludes by speculating on a new form of mathematical experience that these methods could make possible: ``glitching'', a game-like search for uncanny consequences of our definitions.

Abstract:By means of the natural history of and with as a theme to broach, we can think metaphysical questions in double senses: The one kind is the epistemological metaphysics, based on the perceptual-rational-differentiate; it is related with the Zero as vacancy between numbers. Another kind is genetic metaphysics, based on the source-evolution-differentiate, it is related with the zero between negative and positive number. In this respect the zero represents a domain of metaphysic: We may infinitely approach it, but never achieve actually. The zero is polymerization-spot of all relations, also the starting-point of all relations, but it self does not have any determinable content. This is the essence of zero, also the essence of all metaphysic.

Abstract:The "new math" curriculum, one version of which was developed in the 1950s and 1960s by the School Mathematics Study Group under the auspices of the National Science Foundation, occasioned a great deal of controversy among mathematicians. Well before its rejection by parents and teachers, some mathematicians were vocal critics, decrying the new curriculum because of the way it described the practice and history of the discipline. The nature of mathematics, despite the field's triumphs in helping to win World War II and its midcentury promotion as the key to a modern technological society, was surprisingly contested in this period. Supporters of the School Mathematics Study Group, like its director, Edward Begle, emphasized the importance of portraying mathematics as a system of abstract structures, while opponents like Morris Kline argued that math was essentially a tool for understanding the natural world. The debate about the curriculum--and the role of mathematicians in its design--was also a debate about the underlying identity of the subject itself.

Abstract:Despite some discomfort with this grandly philosophical topic, I do in fact hope to address a venerable pair of philosophical chestnuts: mathematical truth and existence. My plan is to set out three possible stands on these issues, for an exercise in compare and contrast. A word of warning, though, to philosophical purists (and perhaps of comfort to more mathematical readers): I will explore these philosophical positions with an eye to their interconnections with some concrete issues of set theoretic method. Let me begin with a brief look at what to count as ‘philosophy’. To some extent, this is a matter of usage, and mathematicians sometimes classify as ‘philosophical’ any considerations other than outright proofs. So, for example, discussions of the propriety of particular mathematical methods would fall under this heading: should we prefer analytic or synthetic approaches in geometry? Should elliptic functions be treated in terms of explicit representations (as in Weierstrass) or geometrically (as in Riemann)? Should we allow impredicative definitions? Should we restrict ourselves to a logic without bivalence or the law of the excluded middle? Also included in this category would be the trains of thought that shaped our central concepts: should a function always be defined by a formula? Should a group be required to have an inverse for every element? Should ideal divisors be defined contextually or explicitly, treated computationally or abstractly? In addition, there are more general questions concerning mathematical values, aims and goals: Should we strive for powerful theories or low-risk theories? How much stress should be placed on the fact or promise of physical applications? How important are interconnections between the various branches of mathematics? These philosophical questions of method naturally include several peculiar to set theory: should set theorists focus their efforts on drawing consequences for areas of interest to mathematicians outside mathematical logic? Should exploration of the standard axioms of ZFC be preferred to the exploration and exploitation of new axioms? How should axioms for set theory be chosen? What would a solution to the Continuum Problem look like?

You should not miss their eccentric proposal of relating Bell’s theorem to the Baby Monster group. Their hyperbolic polygons show a considerable singularity/cusp structure that our modern age of computers is able to capture. Henri Poincaré would have been happy to see it.

Abstract:In recent decades, a growing number of discoveries in fields of mathematics have been assisted by computer algorithms, primarily for exploring large parameter spaces that humans would take too long to investigate. As computers and algorithms become more powerful, an intriguing possibility arises - the interplay between human intuition and computer algorithms can lead to discoveries of novel mathematical concepts that would otherwise remain elusive. To realize this perspective, we have developed a massively parallel computer algorithm that discovers an unprecedented number of continued fraction formulas for fundamental mathematical constants. The sheer number of formulas discovered by the algorithm unveils a novel mathematical structure that we call the conservative matrix field. Such matrix fields (1) unify thousands of existing formulas, (2) generate infinitely many new formulas, and most importantly, (3) lead to unexpected relations between different mathematical constants, including multiple integer values of the Riemann zeta function. Conservative matrix fields also enable new mathematical proofs of irrationality. In particular, we can use them to generalize the celebrated proof by Apéry for the irrationality of $\zeta(3)$. Utilizing thousands of personal computers worldwide, our computer-supported research strategy demonstrates the power of experimental mathematics, highlighting the prospects of large-scale computational approaches to tackle longstanding open problems and discover unexpected connections across diverse fields of science.

Abstract:During the academic year 1980-1981 I was teaching at the Technion-the Israeli Institute of Technology-in Haifa. The audience was small, but con sisted of particularly gifted and eager listeners; unfortunately, their back ground varied widely. What could one offer such an audience, so as to do justice to all of them? I decided to discuss representations of natural integers as sums of squares, starting on the most elementary level, but with the inten tion of pushing ahead as far as possible in some of the different directions that offered themselves (quadratic forms, theory of genera, generalizations and modern developments, etc.), according to the interests of the audience. A few weeks after the start of the academic year I received a letter from Professor Gian-Carlo Rota, with the suggestion that I submit a manuscript for the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences under his editorship. I answered that I did not have a ready manuscript to offer, but that I could use my notes on representations of integers by sums of squares as the basis for one. Indeed, about that time I had already started thinking about the possibility of such a book and had, in fact, quite precise ideas about the kind of book I wanted it to be.

Abstract:During the last decade the Subspace Theorem found several quite unexpected applications, mainly in the Diophantine Analysis and in the Transcendence Theory. Among the great variety of spectacular results, I have chosen several which are technically simpler and which allow one to appreciate how miraculously does the Subspace Theorem emerge in numerous situations, implying beautiful solutions to difficult problems hardly anybody hoped to solve so easily. The three main topics discussed in this article are: the work of Adamczewski and Bugeaud on complexity of algebraic numbers; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on Diophantine equations with power sums; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on integral points on curves and surfaces, and the subsequent development due to Levin and Autissier. In particular, we give a complete proof of the beautiful theorem of Levin and Autissier: an affine surface with 4 (or more) properly intersecting ample divisors at infinity cannot have a Zariski dense set of integral points.

Abstract:Monsters lurk within mathematical as well as literary haunts. I propose to trace some pathways between these two monstrous habitats. I start from Jeffrey Jerome Cohen's influential account of monster culture and explore how well mathematical monsters fit each of his seven theses. The mathematical monsters I discuss are drawn primarily from three distinct but overlapping domains. Firstly, late nineteenth-century mathematicians made numerous unsettling discoveries that threatened their understanding of their own discipline and challenged their intuitions. The great French mathematician Henri Poincaré characterised these anomalies as `monsters', a name that stuck. Secondly, the twentieth-century philosopher Imre Lakatos composed a seminal work on the nature of mathematical proof, in which monsters play a conspicuous role. Lakatos coined such terms as `monster-barring' and `monster-adjusting' to describe strategies for dealing with entities whose properties seem to falsify a conjecture. Thirdly, and most recently, mathematicians dubbed the largest of the sporadic groups `the Monster', because of its vast size and uncanny properties, and because its existence was suspected long before it could be confirmed.

Abstract:A mathematical experiment has always been a key source for a mathematical discovery. Over the past 50 years, thanks to digital technologies, its role in mathematical research has grown significantly. Digital technologies have opened up fundamentally new opportunities for experimentation in mathematics education, bringing mathematical education closer to mathematical research for the majority of students. This tendency is especially desirable in the modern world, where it becomes possible thanks to digital technologies. The article discusses the results of the authors' work over the past decades on the application of a computer mathematical experiment at different levels of school and university education. Particular attention is paid to dynamic geometry environments. The possibilities of using computer algebra systems are also discussed. A project concerning schoolchildren's work on generalizations of Napoleon's theorem is considered in detail.

G.: Yes, I've read something ... F.: Ok, no problem about their rigour. But, when I've seen that the sine of an infinite in NSA is infinitely near to a real number I was astonished: what is the intuitive meaning of this number, if any? Then, I've seen that to work in SDG I must learn to work in intuitionistic logic ... You know, I love margins of books, and I don't want to loose too much time, I have many things to do ... G.: In SDG they also say that every infinitesimal is at the same time positive and negative, what is the meaning of all these? And why does the square of a first order infinitesimal equal zero, whereas the product of two first order infinitesimals is not necessarily zero? And do you know that from any single infinitesimal in NSA is possible to construct a non measurable set? Without using the axiom of choice! F.: Yes, I know, I know ... Ok, listen: why cannot we start from standard real functions of one real variable and use ... This work is the ideal continuation of this dialogue: a theory of actual infinitesimals that do not need a background of formal logic to be understood, with a clear intuitive meaning and with non trivial applications to differential geometry of both finite and infinite dimensional spaces.
