Abstract:We prove a natural generalization of the classical three gap theorem, for rotations on adelic tori. Our proof is an adaptation to the adeles of the lattice based approach to gaps problems in Diophantine approximation originally introduced by Marklof and Strömbergsson.

Abstract:The three gap theorem (or Steinhaus conjecture) asserts that there are at most three distinct gap lengths in the fractional parts of the sequence $\alpha,2\alpha,\ldots,N\alpha$, for any integer $N$ and real number $\alpha$. This statement was proved in the 1950s independently by various authors. Here we present a different approach using the space of two-dimensional Euclidean lattices.

Abstract:Without assuming the Northcott property we provide an upper bound on the number of "big solutions" of a special system of Diophantine inequalities over proper adelic curves. This system is interesting since it is a stronger version Roth's inequality for adelic curves.

Abstract:Recently, Seungki Kim proved an extension of Rogers' mean value formula to the adeles of an arbitrary number field. In this paper we give a new proof Kim's formula, and give a criterion ensuring convergence in this formula. We also discuss one application, namely diophantine approximation over imaginary quadratic number fields with congruence conditions, where we prove an analogue of a famous counting result of W. M. Schimdt.

Abstract:We construct families of circles in the plane such that their tangency graphs have arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number. This provides a strong negative answer to Ringel's circle problem (1959). The proof relies on a (multidimensional) version of Gallai's theorem with polynomial constraints, which we derive from the Hales-Jewett theorem and which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:For a two dimensional vector $\bar v=(\alpha,\beta)$, where $\alpha>0, \beta>0$ are irrational numbers independent over $\mathbb{Q}$, we consider the set $D_n=\{(i\alpha\,{\rm mod}\,1,i\beta\,{\rm mod}\,1),i=1,\ldots,n\}$ in a two dimensional torus and the partition of this torus into Voronoi cells. Areas and forms of these cells are the subject of this experimental work.

Abstract:The Ionescu--Wainger multiplier theorem establishes good $L^p$ bounds for Fourier multiplier operators localized to major arcs; it has become an indispensible tool in discrete harmonic analysis. We give a simplified proof of this theorem with more explicit constants (removing logarithmic losses that were present in previous versions of the theorem), and give a more general variant involving adelic Fourier multipliers. We also establish a closely related adelic sampling theorem that shows that $\ell^p(\Z^d)$ norms of functions with Fourier transform supported on major arcs are comparable to the $L^p(\A_\Z^d)$ norm of their adelic counterparts.

Abstract:Using the theory of "higher structure maps" from generic rings for free resolutions of length three, we give a classification of grade 3 perfect ideals with small type and deviation in local rings of equicharacteristic zero, extending the Buchsbaum-Eisenbud structure theorem on Gorenstein ideals and realizing it as the type D case of an ADE correspondence. We also deduce restrictions on Betti tables in the graded setting for such ideals.

Abstract:We show that the scaling site $X_{\mathbb Q}$ and its periodic orbits $C_p$ of length $\log p$ offer a geometric framework for the well-known analogy between primes and knots. The role of the maximal abelian cover of $X_{\mathbb Q}$ is played by the quotient map $\pi:X_{\mathbb Q}^{ab}\to X_{\mathbb Q}$ from the adele class space $X_{\mathbb Q}^{ab}:={\mathbb Q}^\times \backslash {\mathbb A}_{\mathbb Q}$ to $X_{\mathbb Q}=X_{\mathbb Q}^{ab}/{\hat{\mathbb Z}^*}$. The inverse image $\pi^{-1}(C_p)\subset X_{\mathbb Q}^{ab}$ of the periodic orbit $C_p$ is canonically isomorphic to the mapping torus of the multiplication by the Frobenius at $p$ in the abelianized étale fundamental group $\pi_1^{e t}({\rm Spec} \, {\mathbb Z}_{(p)})^{ab}$ of the spectrum of the local ring ${\mathbb Z}_{(p)}$, thus exhibiting the linking of $p$ with all other primes. In the same way as the Grothendieck theory of the étale fundamental group of schemes is an extension of Galois theory to schemes, the adele class space gives, as a covering of the scaling site, the corresponding extension of the class field isomorphism for $\mathbb Q$ to schemes related to ${\rm Spec} \,\mathbb Z$.

Abstract:We establish an adelic version of Dirichlet's approximation theorem on spheres. Let $K$ be a number field, $E$ be a rigid adelic space over $K$ and $q\colon E\to K$ be a quadratic form. Let $v$ be a place of $K$ and $\alpha\in E\otimes_{K}K_{v}$ such that $q(\alpha)=1$. We produce an explicit constant $c$ having the following property. If there exists $x\in E$ such that $q(x)=1$ then, for any $T>c$, there exists $(\upupsilon,\upphi)\in E\times K$, with $\max{(\Vert\upupsilon\Vert_{E,v},\vert\upphi\vert_{v})}\le T$ and $\max{(\Vert\upupsilon\Vert_{E,w},\vert\upphi\vert_{w})}$ controlled for any place $w$, satisfying $q(\upupsilon)=\upphi^{2}\ne 0$ and $\vert q(\alpha\upphi-\upupsilon)\vert_{v}\le c\vert\upphi\vert_{v}/T$. This remains true for some infinite algebraic extensions as well as for a compact set of places of $K$. Our statements generalize and improve on earlier results by Kleinbock \\& Merrill (2015) and Moshchevitin (2017). Abstract:Fix a prime number and let be a CM extension of number fields in which splits relatively. Let be an automorphic representation of a quasi-split unitary group of even rank with respect to such that is ordinary above with respect to the Siegel parabolic subgroup. We construct the cyclotomic -adic -function of , and a certain generating series of Selmer classes of special cycles on Shimura varieties. We show, under some conditions, that if the vanishing order of the -adic -function is 1, then our generating series is modular and yields explicit nonzero classes (called Selmer theta lifts) in the Selmer group of the Galois representation of associated with ; in particular, the rank of this Selmer group is at least 1. In fact, we prove a precise formula relating the -adic heights of Selmer theta lifts to the derivative of the -adic -function. In parallel to Perrin-Riou's -adic analogue of the Gross–Zagier formula, our formula is the -adic analogue of the arithmetic inner product formula recently established by Chao Li and the second author.

Abstract:We bring the terminology of the Kunz coordinates of numerical semigroups to gapsets and we generalize this concept to m-extensions. It allows us to identify gapsets and, in general, m-extensions with tilings of boards; as a consequence, we present some applications of this identification. Moreover, we present explicit formulas for the number of gapsets with fixed genus and depth, when the multiplicity is 3 or 4, and, in some cases, for the number of gapsets with fixed genus and depth.

Abstract:We study a skew product transformation associated to an irrational rotation of the circle [0,1]/~. This skew product keeps track of the number of times an orbit of the rotation lands in the two complementary intervals of {0,1/2} in the circle. We show that under certain conditions on the continued fraction expansion of the irrational number defining the rotation, the skew product transformation has certain dense orbits. This is in spite of the presence of numerous non-dense orbits. We use this to construct laminations on infinite type surfaces with exotic properties. In particular, we show that for every infinite type surface with an isolated planar end, there is an infinite clique of 2-filling rays based at that end. These 2-filling rays are relevant to Bavard--Walker's loop graphs.

Etale descent obstruction and anabelian geometry of curves over finite fields

Abstract:Let $C$ and $D$ be smooth, proper and geometrically integral curves over a finite field $F$. Any morphism from $D$ to $C$ induces a morphism of their étale fundamental groups. The anabelian philosophy proposed by Grothendieck suggests that, when $C$ has genus at least $2$, all open homomorphisms between the étale fundamental groups should arise in this way from a nonconstant morphism of curves. We relate this expectation to the arithmetic of the curve $C_K$ over the global function field $K = F(D)$. Specifically, we show that there is a bijection between the set of conjugacy classes of well-behaved morphism of fundamental groups and locally constant adelic points of $C_K$ that survive étale descent. We use this to provide further evidence for the anabelian conjecture by relating it to another recent conjecture by Sutherland and the second author.

Abstract:We show that a special alternating knot with sufficiently large number (more than $63$) of twist regions has no chirally cosmetic surgeries, a pair of Dehn surgeries producing orientation-reversingly homeomorphic $3$-manifolds. In the course of proof, we provide the optimal upper bounds of the primitive finite type invariants of degree 2 and 3 that solve Willerton's conjecture.
