Abstract:Let $C$ and $D$ be smooth, proper and geometrically integral curves over a finite field $F$. Any morphism from $D$ to $C$ induces a morphism of their étale fundamental groups. The anabelian philosophy proposed by Grothendieck suggests that, when $C$ has genus at least $2$, all open homomorphisms between the étale fundamental groups should arise in this way from a nonconstant morphism of curves. We relate this expectation to the arithmetic of the curve $C_K$ over the global function field $K = F(D)$. Specifically, we show that there is a bijection between the set of conjugacy classes of well-behaved morphism of fundamental groups and locally constant adelic points of $C_K$ that survive étale descent. We use this to provide further evidence for the anabelian conjecture by relating it to another recent conjecture by Sutherland and the second author.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the arithmetic properties of curves over finite fields, especially problems related to the finite descent obstruction and anabelian geometry. Specifically, the paper explores how the morphisms between curves \(C\) and \(D\), when they are smooth, complete, and geometrically irreducible curves defined over a finite field \(F\), affect the behavior of the locally constant adele points of \(C\) in étale descent. ### Main research questions 1. **Finite descent obstruction**: The paper studies whether the finite descent obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of \(K\)-rational points on the constant curve \(C\times_F K\). Here \(K = F(D)\) is the function field of \(D\). 2. **Anabelian geometry**: The paper explores the relationship between these morphisms and the locally constant adele points of \(C\) by studying well - behaved morphisms between the étale fundamental groups of \(C\) and \(D\). ### Specific problems - **Conjecture 1.1**: The paper proposes a conjecture that the set of locally constant adele points \(C(A_K,F)_{\text{ét}}\) of \(C\) is equal to the set of \(F\)-rational points \(C(F)\) of \(C\) if and only if there are no non - trivial morphisms in \(C(K)\). - **Theorem 1.2**: The paper proves that there is a bijective relationship between \(C(A_K,F)_{\text{ét}}\) and the set of well - behaved morphisms between the étale fundamental groups of \(C\) and \(D\). - **Theorem 1.3**: If the Jacobian \(J_C\) of \(C\) is not an isogeny factor of the Jacobian \(J_D\) of \(D\), then Conjecture 1.1 holds for \(C\) and \(D\). - **Theorem 1.5**: Suppose \(g(C)=g(D)\geq2\) and assume that Conjecture 1.4 holds, then \(C(A_K,F)_{\text{ét}} = C(F)\) if and only if there exists a non - trivial morphism \(D\rightarrow C\). ### Key concepts - **Locally constant adele points**: These points correspond to \(F_v\)-rational points of \(C\) at each place and survive in étale descent. - **Well - behaved morphisms**: These morphisms map the decomposition groups of \(D\) to open subgroups of the decomposition groups of \(C\). - **Finite descent obstruction**: This refers to a method of detecting whether \(C\) has \(K\)-rational points by torsors of finite group schemes. ### Conclusion By combining the theories of anabelian geometry and finite descent obstruction, the paper provides new evidence to support the conjectures about \(K\)-rational points on the constant curve \(C\) and explores the relationship between these conjectures and another conjecture recently proposed by Sutherland and Voloch.
