Adaptation and Self-Organizing Systems

Abstract:This review is devoted to dynamical systems in fields of $p$-adic numbers: origin of $p$-adic dynamics in $p$-adic theoretical physics (string theory, quantum mechanics and field theory, spin glasses), continuous dynamical systems and discrete dynamical systems. The main attention is paid to discrete dynamical systems - iterations of maps in the field of $p$-adic numbers (or their algebraic extensions): conjugate maps, ergodicity, random dynamical systems, behaviour of cycles, holomorphic dynamics. dynamical systems in finite fields. We also discuss applications of $p$-adic discrete dynamical systems to cognitive sciences and psychology.

Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. Abstract:In this short paper I consider relation between measurements, numbers and p-adic mathematical physics. p-Adic numbers are not result of measurements, but nevertheless they play significant role in description of some systems and phenomena. We illustrate their ability for applications referring to some sectors of p-adic mathematical physics and related topics, in particular, to string theory and the genetic code.

Abstract:This paper completes the construction of $p$-adic $L$-functions for unitary groups. More precisely, in Harris, Li and Skinner [‘$p$-adic $L$-functions for unitary Shimura varieties. I. Construction of the Eisenstein measure’, Doc. Math.Extra Vol. (2006), 393–464 (electronic)], three of the authors proposed an approach to constructing such $p$-adic $L$-functions (Part I). Building on more recent results, including the first named author’s construction of Eisenstein measures and $p$-adic differential operators [Eischen, ‘A $p$-adic Eisenstein measure for unitary groups’, J. Reine Angew. Math.699 (2015), 111–142; ‘$p$-adic differential operators on automorphic forms on unitary groups’, Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble)62(1) (2012), 177–243], Part II of the present paper provides the calculations of local $\unicode[STIX]{x1D701}$-integrals occurring in the Euler product (including at $p$). Part III of the present paper develops the formalism needed to pair Eisenstein measures with Hida families in the setting of the doubling method.

Abstract:This paper treats mathematically some problems in p-adic quantum mechanics. We first deal with p-adic symplectic group corresponding to the symmetry on the classical phase space. By the filtrations of isotropic subspaces and almost self-dual lattices in the p-adic symplectic vector space, we explicitly give the expressions of parabolic subgroups, maximal compact subgroups and corresponding Iwasawa decompositions of some symplectic groups. For a triple of Lagrangian subspaces, we associated it with a quadratic form whose Hasse invariant is calculated. Next we study the various equivalent realizations of unique irreducible and admissible representation of p-adic Heisenberg group. For the Schrodinger representation, we can define Weyl operator and its kernel function, while for the induced representations from the characters of maximal abelian subgroups of Heisenberg group generated by the isotropic subspaces or self-dual lattice in the p-adic symplectic vector space, we calculate the Maslov index defined via the intertwining operators corresponding to the representation transformation operators in quantum mechanics.

Abstract:p-Adic quantum mechanics is constructed from the Dirac-von Neumann axioms identifying quantum states with square-integrable functions on the N-dimensional p-adic space. This choice is equivalent to the hypothesis of the discreteness of the space. The time is assumed to be a real variable. The p-adic quantum mechanics is motivated by the question: what happens with the standard quantum mechanics if the space has a discrete nature? The time evolution of a quantum state is controlled by a nonlocal Schrödinger equation obtained from a p-adic heat equation by a temporal Wick rotation. This p-adic heat equation describes a particle performing a random motion in the N-dimensional p-adic space. The Hamiltonian is a nonlocal operator; thus, the Schrödinger equation describes the evolution of a quantum state under nonlocal interactions. In this framework, the Schrödinger equation admits complex-valued plane wave solutions, which we interpret as p-adic de Broglie waves. These mathematical waves have all wavelength 1/p. In the p-adic framework, the double-slit experiment cannot be explained using the interference of the de Broglie waves. The wavefunctions can be represented as convergent series in the de Broglie waves, but the p-adic de Broglie waves are just mathematical objects. Only the square of the modulus of a wave function has a physical meaning as a time-dependent probability density. These probability densities exhibit interference patterns similar to the ones produced by `quantum waves.' In the p-adic framework, in the double-slit experiment, each particle goes through one slit only.

Abstract:We consider p-adic affine dynamical systems on the ring Zp of all p-adic integers, and we find a necessary and sufficient condition for such a system to be minimal. The minimality is equivalent to the transitivity, the ergodicity of the Haar measure, the unique ergodicity, and the strict ergodicity. When the condition is not satisfied, we prove that the system can be decomposed into strict ergodic subsystems. One of our applications is the study of the divisibility, by a power of prime number, of the sequence of integers an−b with positive integers a,b and n. To cite this article: A.-H. Fan et al., C. R. Some Model Theory and Topological Dynamics of $P$-Adic Algebraic Groups

Abstract:We initiate the study of p-adic algebraic groups G from the stability-theoretic and definable topological-dynamical points of view, that is, we consider invariants of the action of G on its space of types over Q(p) in the language of fields. We consider the additive and multiplicative groups of Q(p), and Z(p), the group of upper triangular invertible 2 x 2 matrices, SL(2, Z(p)), and our main focus, SL(2, Q(p)). In all cases we identify f-generic types (when they exist), minimal subflows, and idempotents. Among the main results is that the "Ellis group" of SL(2, Q(p)) is (Z) over cap x Z(p)*, yielding a counterexample to Newelski's conjecture with new features: G = G(00)= G(000) but the Ellis group is infinite. A final section deals with the action of SL(2, Q(p)) on the type space of the projective line over Q(p).

Abstract:In this article we provide the complete proof of the result announced in arXiv:1210.7717 about the construction of scale invariant non-Gaussian generalized stochastic processes over three dimensional p-adic space. The construction includes that of the associated squared field and our result shows this squared field has a dynamically generated anomalous dimension which rigorously confirms a prediction made more than forty years ago, in an essentially identical situation, by K. G. Wilson. We also prove a mild form of universality for the model under consideration. Our main innovation is that our rigourous renormalization group formalism allows for space dependent couplings. We derive the relationship between mixed correlations and the dynamical systems features of our extended renormalization group transformation at a nontrivial fixed point. The key to our control of the composite field is a partial linearization theorem which is an infinite-dimensional version of the Koenigs Theorem in holomorphic dynamics. This is akin to a nonperturbative construction of a nonlinear scaling field in the sense of F. J. Wegner infinitesimally near the critical surface. Our presentation is essentially self-contained and geared towards a wider audience. While primarily concerning the areas of probability and mathematical physics we believe this article will be of interest to researchers in dynamical systems theory, harmonic analysis and number theory. It can also be profitably read by graduate students in theoretical physics with a craving for mathematical precision while struggling to learn the renormalization group.

Abstract:We describe a new approach to relative p-adic Hodge theory based on systematic use of Witt vector constructions and nonarchimedean analytic geometry in the style of both Berkovich and Huber. We give a thorough development of phi-modules over a relative Robba ring associated to a perfect Banach ring of characteristic p, including the relationship between these objects and etale Z_p-local systems and Q_p-local systems on the algebraic and analytic spaces associated to the base ring, and the relationship between etale cohomology and phi-cohomology. We also make a critical link to mixed characteristic by exhibiting an equivalence of tensor categories between the finite etale algebras over an arbitrary perfect Banach algebra over a nontrivially normed complete field of characteristic p and the finite etale algebras over a corresponding Banach Q_p-algebra. This recovers the homeomorphism between the absolute Galois groups of F_p((pi)) and Q_p(mu_p^infty) given by the field of norms construction of Fontaine and Wintenberger, as well as generalizations considered by Andreatta, Brinon, Faltings, Gabber, Ramero, Scholl, and most recently Scholze. Using Huber's formalism of adic spaces and Scholze's formalism of perfectoid spaces, we globalize the constructions to give several descriptions of the etale local systems on analytic spaces over p-adic fields. One of these descriptions uses a relative version of the Fargues-Fontaine curve.

Abstract:Let p⩾2 be a prime number and let Zp be the ring of all p-adic integers. For all α,β,z∈Zp, define Tα,β(z)=αz+β. It is shown that the dynamical system (Zp,Tα,β) is minimal if and only if α∈1+prpZp and β is a unit, here rp=1 (respectively rp=2) if p⩾3 (respectively if p=2), and that when it is minimal, it is strictly ergodic and topologically conjugate to (Zp,T1,1) with an analytic and isometric conjugacy. More importantly, when the system is not minimal, we find all its strictly ergodic components. As application, monomial systems Sn,ρ(z)=ρzn on the group 1+pZp are also discussed.

Abstract:This article discusses a p-adic version of the infinite potential well in quantum mechanics (QM). This model describes the confinement of a particle in a p-adic ball. We rigorously solve the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger equation and determine the stationary solutions. The p-adic balls are fractal objects. By dividing a p-adic ball into a finite number of sub-balls and using the wavefunctions of the infinite potential well, we construct a continuous-time quantum walk (CTQW) on a fully connected graph, where each vertex corresponds to a sub-ball in the partition of the original ball. In this way, we establish a connection between p-adic QM and quantum computing.

Abstract:Abstract This paper, which is a summary (in which considerable creative license has been taken) of the author’s talk at the sixth international conference on p -adic mathematical physics and its applications (CINVESTAV, Mexico City, October 2017), reviews some recent work connecting field theories defined on the p -adic numbers and ideas from the AdS/CFT correspondence. Some results are included, along with general discussion of the utility and interest of p -adic analogues of Lagrangian field theories, at least from the author’s perspective. A few challenges, shortcomings, and ideas for future work are also discussed.

Abstract:Reviews in Mathematical Physics, Ahead of Print. The Langlands program is a vast mathematical projection linking number theory and geometry. In high-energy physics, a connection with mirror symmetry has been suggested in string theory, but it has been little studied in low-energy physics. In the framework of the Langlands program, we present a unified description of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect and the duality found in the fractal nature of the energy spectrum of two-dimensional Bloch electrons, statistical physics, and quantum computation. The new unified view of existing dualism presented in this paper raises the entirely new question of how each theory of physics is connected as a piece of the Langlands program.

Abstract:In this paper, we study $\lambda \phi^4$ scalar field theory defined on the unramified extension of p-adic numbers ${\mathbb Q}_{p^n}$. For different ``space-time'' dimensions $n$, we compute one-loop quantum corrections to the effective potential. Surprisingly, despite the unusual properties of non-Archimedean geometry, the Coleman-Weinberg potential of p-adic field theory has a structure very similar to that of its real cousin. We also study two formal limits of the effective potential, $p \rightarrow 1$ and $p \rightarrow \infty$. We show that the $p\rightarrow 1$ limit allows to reconstruct the canonical result for real field theory from the p-adic effective potential and provide an explanation of this fact. On the other hand, in the $p\rightarrow\infty$ limit, the theory exhibits very peculiar behavior with emerging logarithmic terms in the effective potential, which has no analog in real theories.

Abstract:Recently, wavelet analysis over the p -adic fields are widely used in physics, biology and geophysics. In this paper, p -adic wavelets are used to study various p -adic pseudo-differential equations. p -Adic analogue of wave equation and general linear second order pseudo-differential equation are solved using both Haar and non-Haar wavelets. Finally, the existence of solutions of nonlinear p -adic pseudo differential equation and p -adic analogue of Navier Stokes equation are proved using the Schauder fixed point theorem together with wavelet functions.
