Abstract:A high performance intermediate temperature fuel cell (ITFC) with composite electrolyte composed of co-doped ceria Ce0.8Gd0.05Y0.15O1.9 (GYDC) and a binary carbonate-based (52mol% Li2CO3/48mol% Na2CO3), 1.2mm thick electrolyte layer has been developed. Co-doped Ce0.8Gd0.05Y0.15O1.9 was synthesized by a glycine–nitrate process and used as solid support matrix for the composite electrolyte. The conductivity of both composite electrolyte and GYDC supporting substrate were measured by AC impedance spectroscopy. It showed a sharp conductivity jump at about 500°C when the carbonates melted. Single cells with thick electrolyte layer were fabricated by a dry-pressing technique using NiO as anode and Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ or lithiated NiO as cathode. The cell was tested at 450–550°C using hydrogen as the fuel and air as the oxidant. Excellent performance with high power density of 670mWcm−2 at 550°C was achieved for a 1.2mm thick composite electrolyte containing 40wt% carbonates which is much higher than that of a cell based on pure GYDC with a 70μm thick electrolyte layer.

Abstract:Ceria electrolytes co-doped with Gd3+ and Y3+ (Ce0.8Gd0.2-xYxO1.9) were synthesized by GNP. The crystal structures, lattice parameters and crystallite sizes were determined by XRD. The morphology of the powders was observed by TEM. Sintered at 1250oC for 4 h, all die-pressed ceria pellets achieved densities higher than 95% of theoretical values. The ionic conductivities were measured using AC impedance technique and Ce0.8Gd0.05Y0.15O1.9 showed a higher ionic conductivity than those of other compositions at 500-750oC, indicating that it is an attractive electrolyte material for IT-SOFC.

Abstract:Zirconia-based composites with high thermochemical stability and electrochemical activity are the most promising solid electrolytes for manufacturing solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In the present work, nanocrystalline composite powders of gadolinium-doped zirconia (GDZ: Gd2xZr2(1−x)O4−x) with various doping fractions (0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.16) were synthesized by the Pechini method and applied for the fabrication of several electrolyte pellets to evaluate their physicochemical properties, sinterability, and conductivity. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and the thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) of the synthesized powders confirmed the successful formation of nanocrystalline GDZ in the tetragonal phase with complete substitution of gadolinium phase into the zirconia (ZrO2) lattice. The synthesized gadolinium zirconate powders were then shaped into pellet forms using the tape casting method, followed by sintering at 1300 °C (for 2.5 h). The microstructural analysis of the electrolyte pellets showed suitable grain boundary welding at the surface with an acceptable grain growth at the bulk of the T-phase GDZ samples. The impedance measurements indicated that the T-phase GDZ-8 could provide a comparably higher ionic conductivity (with 7.23 × 10−2 S/cm in the air at 800 °C) than the other dopant fractions. The results of this work can help better understand the characteristics and electrochemical performance of the T-phase gadolinium zirconate as a potential electrolyte for the fabrication of SOFCs.

Abstract:Doped ceria has been extensively explored as an efficient electrolyte material for intermediate to low temperature solid oxide fuel cell. Among other ceria electrolytes, gadolinia doped ceria (GDC) is one of the most extensively studied electrolyte materials for low temperature SOFC applications. Here, co-precipitation method is employed to synthesize GDC nanoparticles with stoichiometric ratio of Gd x Ce 1−x O 2−δ (with 0 x 0.20). In this process, the molecular water of the precursors has been utilized during the co-precipitation to avoid possible agglomeration caused by hydrogen bonding. The cubic phase formation was examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman profile ascribing absence of other phases. XRD along with Reitveld refinement confirm the presence of cubic phase of ceria and Raman profile confirms the oxygen vacancies due to the non-stoichiometry created in CeO 2 lattice. The granularity of the sample was observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) with elemental mapping by EDS. It is observed from FESEM that the grains are compact in nature and the density observed was around 98% of the theoretical density. The electrochemical behavior was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which was taken between the temperature ranges of 350–700 °C. It is observed from the EIS study that ceria doped with 15 mol % Gd 3+ (Gd 0.15 Ce 0.85 O 2−δ ) is having highest grain boundary ionic conductivity of about 0.104 S cm −1 at 700 °C with an activation energy of 0.81 eV. This work demonstrates the correlation between oxygen vacancy generation and the enhancement of ionic conductivity with Gd 3+ doping in ceria.

Influence of Lithium Oxide Addition on the Sintering Behavior and Electrical Conductivity of Gadolinia Doped Ceria

Abstract:Ceria-based electrolytes have been widely researched in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), which might be operated at 500-600 degrees C. Sintering behavior with lithium oxide as sintering additive and electrical conductivity of gadolinia doped ceria (Gd0.1Ce0.9O2-delta, GDC10) electrolyte was studied in this paper by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). As the results, the fully dense GDC10 electrolytes are obtained at a low temperature of 800 degrees C with 2.5 mol% Li2O as sintering additive (called 5LiGDC800). During sintering process, lithium oxides adsorbed by around GDC10 surface help to sinter at 800 degrees C and are kept at the grain boundary of GDC10 in the end. The fine grains of 100-400 nm and high electrical conductivity of 0.014 S/cm at 600 degrees C in 5LiGDC800 were achieved, which contributed to the lower sintering temperature and enhanced grain boundary conductivity, respectively. Lithium, staying at grain boundary, reduces the depletion of oxygen vacancies in the space charge layers and increases the oxygen vacancy concentration in the grain boundary, which leads to improve the total electrical conductivity of 5LiGDC800.
Direct synthesis of Ce0.8Sm0.2−xZnxO2−δ electrolyte by sol–gel for IT-SOFC

Abstract:In this paper, high-quality nanosized Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2− x Zn x O 2− δ ( x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08, and 0.16) powders are successfully synthesized by sol–gel process for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) application. The thermal behavior, porosity, crystal phase, surface microstructure, and electrical properties of Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2− x Zn x O 2− δ are studied by thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimeter (TG-DSC), Archimedes drainage method, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), respectively. The results show that Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2− x Zn x O 2− δ electrolyte appears very high sintering activity even at sintering temperature as low as 1300 °C. The crystal phase of sample powders after sintered at 600 °C belongs to single-phase cubic fluorite structure with mean particle size of 15 nm. The lattice parameter increases first until doping 2 mol.% Zn and then decreases with more doping amount. Electrochemical performance results demonstrate that doping with appropriate amount of Zn can significantly improve the conductivity of SDC materials. The highest conductivity of 0.057 S·cm −1 at 800 °C is obtained for Ce 0.8 Sm 0.16 Zn 0.04 O 2− δ , owing to high density, ultrafine grains, and increased grain boundaries. Furthermore, the fuel cell performance of Ce 0.8 Sm 0.16 Zn 0.04 O 2− δ electrolyte is measured with 5 wt.% Fe-loaded activated carbon as the fuel. It delivers an outstanding performance, with an OCV of 1.02 V, a maximum power output of 408 mW·cm −2 at 850 °C, indicating that Ce 0.8 Sm 0.16 Zn 0.04 O 2− δ may have potential application for IT-SOFC electrolyte materials.

Abstract:A full dense Gadolinia-Doped Ceria (GDC) electrolyte with fine grains fabricated at low temperature is significant both to the performance optimization and cost effective of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC). Calculated by density functional theory (DFT), it's found that the Li+ doped CeO2 crystal cell can reduce the oxygen vacancy formation energy about 0.2 eV and therefore promote the system ionic conductivity, when a Ce4O8 cell absence of one oxygen ion, the cubic crystal system is converted to the monoclinic system and so the CeO2 crystal cell become unstable. Furthermore, lithium oxide easily formed a thin layer on the surface of cerium oxides, which could help the CeO2 unit to rearrange and transport.

Abstract:The Nd and Gd co-doped zirconia Zr 1–x–y Nd x Gd y O 2–δ ( x , y = 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.10) system of materials were prepared through a modified sol–gel route. Sintering of the samples was conducted using conventional sintering at 1300 °C for 6 h. The prepared materials are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (P–XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscope (SEM with EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman, and impedance spectroscopy. The dense electrolyte pellets are produced with co-doping in zirconia. P–XRD confirmed the formation of samples with single phases with stabilized cubic structure even after the sintering of co-doped zirconia samples. SEM and EDS revealed good density in surface microstructure and elemental confirmation in all the compositions. XRD and SEM studies also revealed the highest relative density and small grain size of Zr 0.85 Nd 0.075 Gd 0.075 O 2–δ . FTIR disclosed the absorption bands corresponding to the chemical bonds of oxides in the compositions, and the findings are consistent with the P–XRD data. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed the further phase confirmation of cubic structure. Impedance spectroscopy unveiled the enhanced electrical properties, i.e., enhanced ionic conductivity and small activation energy of NGZ7.5. The enhanced ionic conductivity, i.e., 0.47 × 10 −2 S/cm at 550 °C with the stabilized cubic structure of Zr 0.85 Nd 0.075 Gd 0.075 O 2–δ sample makes it suitable for solid electrolytes towards intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell applications.

Abstract:Gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) interlayer is commonly inserted between electrolyte yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and cathode La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF) to prevent the Sr migration from cathode to electrolyte and improve the stability of the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). However, it is difficult to make a dense GDC interlayer during the traditional process. Co, Gd and Ce nitrates solution is used as the infiltration solution to modify and in situ densify the GDC interlayer in this study. The GDC interlayer shows high density when it is pre-sintered at 1175°C and final sintered at 1300°C, and the cell shows high performance and stability, the voltage has little degradation after running for 100 hours at 800°C and 0.5Acm-2, Sr is not observed at the YSZ/GDC interface.

Abstract:In recent years, Gadolinium Doped Ceria (GDC) barrier layers have been reported to enhance the performance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs)by reducing cathode/electrolyte interface diffusion and improving ionic conductivity. Prior investigations have demonstrated that GDC thin film sputtered at room-temperature yields substantial enhancements in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs).This enhancement is evidenced by a noteworthy increase in output current (+78%) and a considerable reduction in ohmic resistance (up to -42%), compared to conventionally screen-printed industrial SOFCs. To probe the intricate interplay between morphology and stoichiometry, which fundamentally determines the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio governing both ionic and electronic conductivity, this study utilized quantitative X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) techniques. Results revealed that annealing parameters played a role in the number of available oxygen vacancies in the oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR), inducing different changes in the investigated samples. Non-destructive investigations utilizing Distribution of Relaxation Time (DRT) analysis were conducted on two short stacks with varying thickness, employing different sputtering Modalities. These studies revealed that thickness significantly influences the ultimate performance.

Abstract:Nanostructured samaria‐ and gadolinia‐doped ceria (SDC and GDC) powders were synthesized at low temperature (400°C) using diamine‐assisted direct coprecipitation method. Fast‐firing (f.f.) processes, where sintering temperatures are reached in a short time to promote lattice diffusion, were compared with conventional sintering, for the formation of dense microstructures from the nanostructured powders. Highly dense SDC and GDC samples (96%) with reduced grain size (150 nm) were obtained by f.f. even at 1300°–1400°C and, unexpectedly, high electrical conductivity and low blocking effect at grain boundary was obtained. Conventionally sintered samples showed that the grain boundary resistivity decreased with increasing the grain size, in agreement with the increase in geometrical bulk volume/grain boundary area ratio. Conversely, f.f. samples showed grain boundary resistivity smaller for small grain size. The above effect was observed only for high dopant (>10% molar) contents. The combined effect of powder grain size, dopant content, and sintering temperature–time profile, can be exploited to tune ceria microstructures for specific ionic device applications.

Evaluation of Li2O As an Efficient Sintering Aid for Gadolinia-Doped Ceria Electrolyte for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract:Li2O has been evaluated as a sintering aid for Gd0.1Ce0.9O2-delta(GDC). Using 2.5 mol% ratio of Li2O to GDC (5LiGDC), dense samples with relative density of 993% were achieved at sintering temperature as low as 900 degrees C. A high total conductivity of 0.059 S cm(-1) at 600 degrees C was obtained for the 5LiGDC samples sintered at 1000 degrees C (5LiGDC1000), while 5LiGDC samples sintered at 1400 degrees C showed a lower conductivity of 0.017 S cm(-1) at 600 degrees C. It has been found that Li2O has the tendency to accumulate in the grain boundary region to form Li-Gd-Ce-O phases when the 5LiGDC sintering temperature is at 1000 degrees C or below, leading to an increase in the grain boundary conductivity. Increasing the 5LiGDC sintering temperature above 1000 degrees C will accelerate the vaporization of Li2O, association of the oxygen vacancy and formation of additional pores in the bulk, resulting in a decrease of both the grain boundary and grain interior conductivity. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) results have confirmed the existence of Li ions for the 5LiGDC samples sintered at or below 1000 degrees C, while most of Li species has vaporized for the 5LiGDC samples sintered above 1000 degrees C. Abstract:Co-doped ceria electrolytes of Ce0.8Gd0.2−xYxO1.9 (x=0.0–0.20) fine powders were prepared with glycine–nitrate method. The results of X-ray diffraction showed that all powders crystallite calcined at 873K were single phase with cubic fluorite structure. The average crystallite sizes calculated by the Scherrer formula were between 21 and 23nm, which was in good agreement with the results of TEM and particle size distribution measurements. The thermal expansion curves of Ce0.8Gd0.2−xYxO1.9 were measured and the thermal expansion coefficients between 373 and 1123K were calculated. The SEM results exhibited that electrolyte pellets sintered at 1523K were dense, and the relative densities of these pellets were over 96%. The impedance spectra analysis of these electrolytes has been performed at 623–1023K. The results showed that co-doped ceria exhibited higher ionic conductivity and lower activation energy than the singly doped ceria with the same dopant concentration at the temperature range of 773–1023K, and the electrolytic domain boundary of co-doped ceria was smaller than that of singly doped ceria at 873–973K. It suggested that co-doping with appropriate ratio gadolinium and yttrium could further improve the electrochemical performance of ceria-based electrolytes. These co-doped samples are ideal electrolyte materials of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract:One of the challenges for improving the performance and cost-effectiveness of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is the development of effective interconnect materials. A widely used interconnect ceramic for SOFCs is doped lanthanum chromite. In this paper, we report a doped lanthanum chromite, La0.7Ca0.3CrO3−δ (LCC)+xwt.% Gd0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (GDC) (x=0–10), with improved electrical conductivity and sintering capability. In this composite material system, LCC+GDC were prepared by an auto-ignition process and the electrical conductivity was characterized in air and in H2. The LCC powders exhibited a better sintering ability and could reach a 94.7% relative density at 1400°C for 4h in air and with the increase of GDC content the relative density increased, reached 98.5% when the GDC content was up to 10wt.%. The electrical conductivity of the samples dramatically increased with GDC addition until a maximum of 134.48Scm−1 in air at 900°C when the materials contained 3wt.% GDC. This is 5.5 times higher than pure LCC (24.63Scm−1). For the sample with a 1wt.% GDC content, the conductivity in pure H2 at 900°C was a maximum 5.45Scm−1, which is also higher than that of pure LCC ceramics (4.72Scm−1). The average thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) increased with the increase of GDC content, ranging from 11.12 to 14.32×10−6K−1, the majority of which unfortunately did not match that of 8YSZ. The oxygen permeation measurement presented a negligible oxygen ionic conduction, indicating that it is still an electronically conducting ceramic. Therefore, it is a very promising interconnect material for higher performance and cost-effectiveness for SOFCs.

Abstract:Co-doped ceria of Ce1−xGdx−yYyO2−0.5x, wherein x = 0.15 and 0.2, 0 ≤ y ≤ x, were prepared by glycine-nitrate method. Their structures and ionic conductivities were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and AC impedance spectroscopy (IS). All the electrolytes were found to be ceria-based solid solutions of fluorite type structures. Co-doping was found to effectively enhance the conductivity. In comparison to the singly doped ceria, the co-doped ceria showed much higher ionic conductivities at 673–973 K. At 773 K, the ionic conductivity of Ce0.8Gd0.05Y0.15O1.9 is 0.013 S cm−1 which is three times as high as that of Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9. These Gd3+and Y3+ co-doped ceria are ideal electrolyte materials of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs).

Abstract:Gd0.8Sr0.2CoO3 (GSC) were prepared by the glycine-nitrate process (GNP) for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (ITSOFC). Symmetrical electrodes of GSC were obtained on (SM2O3)(0.2)(CeO2)(0.8) (SDC) by screen-printing and sintered at temperature from 900 degrees C to 1050 degrees C. The electrochemical properties of the interfaces between GSC cathodes and SDC electrolytes were investigated using AC impedance spectroscopy. The results show that perovskite was formed at 800 degrees C, 400 degrees C lower than that prepared by solid-state reaction. The interfacial resistance of GSC cathode is only 0.26 Omega cm(2) at 700 degrees C. The results indicate GSC is an ideal candidate cathode for ITSOFC, due to its high catalytic activity for oxygen reduction.

Abstract:In this study, a ceria-based composite electrolyte was investigated for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) based on SDC–25wt.% K2CO3. Sodium carbonate co-precipitation process by which SDC powder was adopted and sound cubic fluorite structure was formed after SDC powders were sintered at 750°C for 3h. The crystallite size of the particle was 21nm in diameter as calculated from data obtained through X-ray diffraction. The conductivity of the composite electrolyte proposed in this study was much higher than that of pure SDC at the comparable temperature of 550–700°C. The transition of the ionic conductivity occurred at 650°C. Based on this type of composite electrolyte, single cell with the electrolyte thickness of 0.3mm were fabricated using dry pressing, with nickel oxide adopted as anode and SSC as cathode. The single cell was then tested at 550–700°C on home-made equipment in this study, using hydrogen/air. The maximum power density and open circuit voltage (OCV) achieved 600mWcm−2 and 1.05V at 700°C, respectively.

Abstract:Developing an electrolyte material for using in the low-temperature fuel cell (LT-SOFC) is a highly challenging issue. In this study, Samarium (Sm) and Gallium (Ga) doped ceria CeO2 (Sm0.10Ga0.10Ce0.80O2-δ) named as SGDC electrolyte material have been prepared by co-precipitation method and its ionic conductivity and electrical performance have been evaluated in the 400–700 °C temperature range. The crystallographic condition and phase formation of the material was analysed and observed a single-phase cubic fluorite crystal structure with a mean value of 39 nm in the prepared SGDC. The electrolyte materials showed a comparatively lower activation energy of 0.49 eV; however, they exhibited remarkably high ionic conductivity, current density and power density at a significantly lower operating temperature of 400 °C. The electrochemical results demonstrate the potentiality of the prepared Sm0.10Ga0.10Ce0.80O2-δ material to be used as the electrolyte for LT-SOFC.

Abstract:Samples of Sm and Mg co-doped ceria electrolyte of Ce1−xSmx−yMgyO2−δ (x = 0.2; y = 0.00, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.175) were synthesized by sol–gel process. The prepared samples were sintered at 1100 and 1400 °C for 4 h. The bulk densities were measured by Archimedes method. XRD measurements indicate that the synthesized samples were in single-phase cubic fluorite structure (space group Fm3m). The cell parameters decrease with the concentration of Mg, and 2θ values slightly shift towards right. The particle sizes obtained were between 7.14 and 17.44 nm. The sintered sample achieved 95% of theoretical density. FTIR spectra of samples sintered at 1400 °C indicates weak interactions between 3550–3400 cm−1 and 1600–1300 cm−1 are attributed to O–H stretching modes and strong bonds 850–450 cm−1 are assigned to characteristic Ce–O vibrations. The surface morphology and chemical composition were analyzed by SEM and EDS, SEM micrographs show spherical faceted grains, and the samples were crack free, dense material with some pores on surface which are inconsistent with density results. The average grain size obtained was 0.5 μm. Particle size obtained by TEM was in agreement with that obtained by XRD. The high-density ceria co-doped ceramic can be used as electrolyte in SOFC.

Effects of Sm and Gd co-doping on ionic conductivity of ceria-based electrolyte materials

Abstract:This study explores the impact of co-doping on ceria-based electrolyte materials with samarium (Sm) and gadolinium (Gd) to improve their structural, morphological, and ionic conductivity properties synthesized through a co-precipitation technique using sodium hydro-oxide (NaOH) as the precipitating agent for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applications. The aforementioned approach provides benefits like uniformity, high purity, and simplicity of synthesis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to characterize the crystal structure and morphology of the synthesized materials. No secondary phases were observed revealing the phase purity of the material. A decrease in lattice constant was detected due to the replacement of a small concentration of Gd with Sm having small ionic radii compared to Sm. Homogeneity and decrease in particle size of prepared samples were observed via SEM analysis predicting the enhancement in the grain size with the reduction in grain boundaries and elemental composition through EDX agreed with the starting composition. Impedance spectroscopy was employed to measure the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte samples. Our results demonstrate a significant decrease in grain and grain boundary resistances causing the increase in ionic conductivity with the introduction of Gd and Sm as co-dopants into the ceria structure. The optimal doping concentration was found to be 10 % Gd and 10 % Sm. The co-doped ceria had a high ionic conductivity of 6.28 × 10 −2 S/cm at 750 ο C and a low activation energy of 0.44 eV, indicating improved ionic mobility. This study provides valuable insights into the role of Gd and Sm co-doping in enhancing the ionic conductivity of ceria-based electrolyte materials, which is crucial for the advancement of high-performance SOFCs.
