Abstract:In this study, super-fine powdered activated carbon (SPAC) has been proposed and investigated as a novel catalyst for the catalytic ozonation of oxalate for the first time. SPAC was prepared from commercial granular activated carbon (GAC) by ball milling. SPAC exhibited high external surface area with a far greater member of meso- and macropores (563% increase in volume). The catalytic performances of activated carbons (ACs) of 8 sizes were compared and the rate constant for pseudo first-order total organic carbon removal increased from 0.012 min–1 to 0.568 min–1 (47-fold increase) with the decrease in size of AC from 20 to 40 mesh (863 mm) to SPAC (~1.0 mm). Furthermore, the diffusion resistance of SPAC decreased 17-fold compared with GAC. The ratio of oxalate degradation by surface reaction increased by 57%. The rate of transformation of ozone to radicals by SPAC was 330 times that of GAC. The results suggest that a series of changes stimulated by ball milling, including a larger ratio of external surface area, less diffusion resistance, significant surface reaction and potential oxidized surface all contributed to enhancing catalytic ozonation performance. This study demonstrated that SPAC is a simple and effective catalyst for enhancing catalytic ozonation efficacy.

Abstract:The relationships between structural (chemical or physical) and more general properties such as the surface electrokinetic potential (zeta potential or isoelectric point) or spreading pressure of water were investigated for three powder activated carbon (PAC) samples (manufactured from woods, coconut shell and coal). The PAC samples were characterized by physical parameter measurements (such as zeta potential, specific surface area, spreading pressure) and chemical parameters; surface functional groups and structural mineral elements. Chemical studies show that all PAC samples contain large quantities of mineral ions, mostly calcium, sulfate and phosphate ions. These groups influence surface properties in the same way as do acidic or basic organic surface functional groups. The thermal treatment of activated carbon decreases acidic surface functional groups and this reaction accompanies an increase in the electrokinetic potential. The “grafting” of a cationic polymer adds positive charge to activated carbon surfaces, but the quantity of surface functional groups is also modified by this process. Adsorption isotherms of water in activated carbon enable us to estimate initial polar adsorption sites. The localised adsorption of water on activated carbon is a function of the number of mineral ions and surface functional groups. Quantitative adsorption of water is related to the microporous volume.

Abstract:Activated carbon serving as electrode materials for supercapacitors were prepared by a polymer blend carbonization and steam activation method using phenol formaldehyde resin(PF)as carbon precursor and polyethylene glycol(PEG)as pore-forming agent.Heating program was determined by the pyrolysis behavior of PF,PEG and their blend(PF-PEG)in the heating process characterized by the TG.The specific surface area and pore structure parameter of the activated carbon were calculated by the N2-BET method.Galvanostatic charge-discharge,cyclic voltammetry and alternating current impedance were used to characterize electrochemical performance of activated carbon.Activation temperature,water vapor flow rate and activation time affected the pore structure and electrochemical performance of activate carbon.The results showed that with increasing activation temperature and increasing activation time,the capacitance increased.At activation temperature of 900℃,steam flow rate of 1 ml·min-1 and activation time of 2 h,the structure and properties of prepared activated carbon were better.Its pore size was mainly smaller than 2 nm.With electrolyte solution 1 mol · L-1 KOH/H2O solution,its capacitance reached 105.4 F·g-1 with a traditional three-electrode test system,and cycling performance was better.
Control of Nano Grains and Wide Carbocyclic Layer Space of Forming Active Carbon with Extraordinary Capacitance Characteristics in Supercapacitors

Abstract:Improving the properties of activated carbon (AC) electrodes for enhancing the electrochemical performance of commercial supercapacitors is still a great challenge. In this work, a coconut shell carbonized raw material is used to successfully manufacture AC by the traditional steam activation method followed by further calcination in CO2. Results showed that a skeleton mesh wall was formed in AC, the thickness of the mesh wall was around 1.5 nm, and the crystalline phase of grain size of 1.13 nm was controlled to form independently in the wall of AC after calcination in CO2 for 4 h. The carbocyclic layer space of the grain phase ranges from 0.381 to 0.392 nm in AC, which is 17% wider than that of 0.335 nm of graphite. The AC shows a high specific surface area (1782 m(2)/g), and the supercapacitor prepared by AC shows a high specific capacitance (112.5 F.g(-1) at 0.1 A.g(-1)), a high capacitance retention rate (retains 89.06% after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles), a high rate performance (specific capacitance going down from 111.2 to 65.1 F.g(-1) under current density from 0.1 to 10 A.g(-1)), low internal resistance, and a power and energy capacity (energy density, 28.83 W h.kg(-1); power density, 9.89 kW.kg(-1)). It is worth comparing with the typical commercial YP-50 of Kuraray, Japan.

Abstract:Activated carbon fiber paper (ACFP) has the potential for adsorption due to their high surface area and low through resistance. In this work, free-standing ACFP was developed from fibrillated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber through wet forming process combined with subsequent pre-oxidation, carbonization and CO2 activation. A PFI refiner was used to prepare fibrillated PAN fibers with a beating degree of 7, 11, 25 and 60 oSR, respectively. As expected, PAN fibers with high beating degree improved surface area and fine fiber content, which resulted in the dense structure and low porosity of paper, thus influencing later stabilization and pyrolysis, as well as final properties of ACFP. With the increase of beating degree, the oxygen content of pre-oxidized PAN paper increased, but the cyclization index first decreased and then increased. ACFP with higher beating degree possessed higher BET surface area, pore volume and CO2 uptake capacity. ACFP, prepared from freeze-dried PAN paper, performed better in physicochemical properties than that from plate-press drier under the same beating degree. This study exhibited that ACFP can be a special material featured by scale production, lightweight, and high microporosity of chemical adsorption and separation.

Abstract:Supercritical water (SCW) has been employed as an efficient activating agent for the preparation of activated carbon microspheres (P-ACS) with developed mesopores from phenolic-resin. Several processing factors that influenced the activation reaction, including activation temperature, activation duration, supercritical pressure and water flow rate were investigated. Increasing activation temperature and duration lead to larger porosity and higher specific surface area as demonstrated in the samples. Supercritical pressure change has little effect on the activation; however, there are indications that a slight increase in mesoporosity can be obtained when the pressure was raised to 36 MPa or higher. Higher water flow rate slightly enhanced the development of microporosity but had little effect on the mesoporosity. Compared with the traditional steam activation, SCW activation can produce P-ACS with more mesoporosity and higher mechanical strength.

Abstract:In order to achieve the purpose of regulating the pore structure characteristics of activated carbon by adjusting the experimental parameters, the effects of carbonization temperature, carbonization time, pre-activation temperature, pre-activation time and impregnation time on the pore structure of sargassum-based activated carbon (SAC) are studied by orthogonal experiment. The gravimetric capacitance of SAC and the relationship between the gravimetric capacitance and specific surface area are also studied. The results show that the SACs prepared at all experimental conditions have developed pore structure and huge specific surface area, reaching 3,122 m 2 /g. The pore size of SAC is almost all within 6 nm, in which the micropores are mainly concentrated in 0.4–0.8 nm, the mesopores are mainly concentrated in 2–4 nm, and the number of micropores is significantly higher than that of mesopores. During the preparation of SAC, the effect of carbonization temperature on the specific surface area and specific pore volume of SAC is very significant. The effect of carbonization time on the specific surface area of SAC is significant, but the effect on specific pore volume can be ignored. The effects of pre-activation temperature, pre-activation time, and impregnation time on specific surface area and specific pore volume of SAC can be ignored. In addition, SACs show good gravimetric capacitance performance as electrode material for supercapacitors, which can significantly increase the capacitance of supercapacitors and thus broaden their applications. The gravimetric capacitance and specific surface area of SACs show a good linear relationship when the activated carbons have similar material properties and pore size distribution.

Abstract:A series of spherical activated carbons (SACs) with different pore structures were prepared from chloromethylated polydivinylbenzene by ZnCl2 activation. The effects of activation temperature and retention time on the yield and textural properties of the resulting SACs were studied. All the SACs are generated with high yield of above 65% and exhibit relatively high mesopore fraction (me%) of 35.7%-43.6% compared with conventional activated carbons. The sample zlc28 prepared at 800 degrees C for 2 h has the largest BET surface area of 891 m(2) g(-1) and pore volume of 0.489 cm(3) g(-1). SEM and XRD analyses of zlc28 verify the presence of developed porous structure composed of disordered micrographite stacking with large amounts of interspaces in the order of nanometers.

Abstract:Sludge-derived carbons were prepared by hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolysis-activation. In this work, the physiochemical properties and electrochemical performance of these carbons were compared in detail. The structure of pyrochar (PC) has been fully developed that layered porous skeleton was formed during activation process. Thus, obtained the pyrolysis-activated carbon (PAC) had excellent specific surface area (463.2 m 2 /g) and pore volume (0.36 m 3 /g), which were higher than these of hydrothermal carbonization-activated carbon (HCAC-300) (364.1 m 2 /g, 0.18 m 3 /g). Due to the high nitrogen content of sludge, there were abundant N functional groups (N-5, N-6, N-Q) on the surface of PAC and HCAC. The self-doping of nitrogen was beneficial for improving the carrier concentration and charge transport capacity of carbons, and forming the pseudocapacitance via the redox reaction. Owing to the remarkable physiochemical properties, PAC exhibited highest specific capacitance of 114.7 F/g at 1 A/g, which led to a large amount of charge storage and rapid diffusion of electrons/ions. However, hydrothermal carbonization performed a high economic advantage in disposing the high-humidity feedstock such as sludge. Therefore, the exploration on improving the pore structure in hydrothermal carbonization process thus obtaining high performance carbon material would be of significance and of prospects.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of a study on the influence of the degree of impregnation and activation temperature on the formation of the porous structure of activated carbons (ACs) obtained from Pine cones by the chemical activation process using potassium hydroxide as an activator. The advanced new numerical clustering based adsorption analysis (LBET) method, together with the implemented unique numerical procedure for the fast multivariant identification were applied to nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms determined for porous structure characterization of the ACs. Moreover, the Quenched Solid Density Functional Theory (QSDFT) method was chosen to determine pore size distributions. The results showed a significant influence of the primary structure of Pine cones on the formation of the porous structure of the developed ACs. Among others, it was evidenced by a very high degree of surface heterogeneity of all the obtained ACs, irrespective of the degree of impregnation with potassium hydroxide and the activation temperature. Moreover, the analysis of carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms showed, that the porous structure of the studied ACs samples contains micropores accessible only to carbon dioxide molecules. The results also showed a significant advantage of the LBET method over those conventionally used for porous structure analysis based on Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Dubinin-Raduskevich (DR) equations, because it takes into account surface heterogeneities. The novel analyses methods were more fully validated as a reliable characterization tool, by extending their application to the isotherms for ACs developed from the same precursor by phosphoric acid activation, and for samples arising from these ACs, further subjected to additional post-treatments. The effect of the raw material used as precursor was moreover analysed by comparison with previous reported results for other ACs. The complementarity of the results obtained with the LBET and QSDFT methods is also noteworthy, resulting in a more complete and reliable picture of the analyzed porous structures.

Abstract:The rapid and low-cost preparation of powder activated coke (PAC) is very important for the promotion of fluidized dry desulfurization technology of activated coke. In order to explore the effect of rapid pyrolysis process on SO 2 adsorption capacity of PAC, the fractal analysis of PAC prepared under different atmospheres was carried out. The Frenkel–Halsey–Hill (FHH) method was used to determine two fractal dimensions D 1 and D 2 , under relative pressures of 0–0.5 and 0.5–1, respectively. The results indicate that the fractal dimensions were influenced by the concentrations of activation agents with D 1 ranging from 2.1838 to 2.8643 and D 2 ranging from 2.7485 to 2.9257. The effect of steam on the fractal dimension of PAC sample is small, but oxygen has a great promotion effect on the fractal dimension. An n-shaped curve-based relationship between fractal dimensions and coke yields is observed with a peak values of fractal dimensions appearing around 64% yield. The SO 2 adsorption capacity shows a consecutively positive linear correlation with D 2 , while it illustrates distinctly different linear rates with D 1 in intervals of 2–2.6 and 2.6–3, respectively. Taking advantage of fractal analysis as research method, this paper clarified the influence of activation atmosphere and ablative degree on the SO 2 adsorption capacity of PAC, and the research conclusion provided a basis for the PAC preparation with high SO 2 capacity.

Abstract:High surface area activated carbons were prepared with Spartina alterniflora and cotton stalk as raw materials and KOH as activating agent. Effects of materials type, impregnation ratio, activation temperature and heat preservation time on the yield, elemental composition and adsorptive capacity of activated carbon were studied. The properties and pore structure of the carbons were characterized with nitrogen adsorption, powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Main pore characteristics of activated carbons were analyzed by BET equation, Horvath-Kawazoe BET method and DFT method. The considerable preparation conditions are obtained as follows: impregnation ratio of 3: 1, an activation temperature of 800 degrees C and an activation time of 1.5 h. The BET surface area of activated carbon prepared from Spartina alterniflora reached 2 825 m2 x g(-1) when its total pore volume, yield, iodine number and methylene blue adsorption were 1.374 cm3 x g(-1), 16.36%, 1797 mg x g(-1) and 495 mg x g(-1) respectively under above conditions. The activated carbon from cotton stalk was prepared with BET surface area of 2 135 m2 x g(-1), total pore volume of 1.038 cm3 x g(-1), yield of 11.22%, methylene blue adsorption of 1 251 mg x g(-1), and iodine number of 478 mg x g(-1), respectively. The methylene blue adsorption and iodine number are much higher than the national first level for activated carbon. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities of 2,4-dinitrophenol on the two carbons were 932 mg x g(-1) and 747 mg x g(-1), respectively, which are superior to ordinary activated carbon and activated carbon fiber.

Abstract:In this study, the impact of different reaction times on the preparation of powdered activated carbon (PAC) using a one-step rapid activation method under flue gas atmosphere is investigated, and the underlying reaction mechanism is summarized. Results indicate that the reaction process of this method can be divided into three stages: stage I is the rapid release of volatiles and the rapid consumption of O 2 , primarily occurring within a reaction time range of 0–0.5 seconds; stage II is mainly the continuous release and diffusion of volatiles, which is the carbonization and activation coupling reaction stage, and the carbonization process is the main in this stage. This stage mainly occurs at the reaction time range of 0.5–2.0 seconds when SL-coal is used as material, and that is 0.5–3.0 seconds when JJ-coal is used as material; stage III is mainly the activation stage, during which activated components diffuse to both the surface and interior of particles. This stage mainly involves the reaction stage of CO 2 and H 2 O (g) activation, and it mainly occurs at the reaction time range of 2.0–4.0 seconds when SL-coal is used as material, and that is 3.0–4.0 s when JJ-coal is used as material. Besides, the main function of the first two stages is to provide more diffusion channels and contact surfaces/activation sites for the diffusion and activation of the activated components in the third stage. Mastering the reaction mechanism would serve as a crucial reference and foundation for designing the structure, size of the reactor, and optimal positioning of the activator nozzle in PAC preparation.

Abstract:Mechanical ball milling is a prevalent technology for material preparation and also serves as a post-treatment method to modify electrode materials, thus enhancing electrochemical performances. This study explores the microstructure modification of commercial activated carbon through mechanical ball milling, proving its efficacy in increasing sodium-ion energy storage. The evolution of activated carbon’s physical and chemical properties during ball milling was systematically examined. It was observed that the quantity of closed pores and the graphitization degree in activated carbon increased with extended ball milling duration. The sodium storage mechanism in activated carbon transitions to an insertion-pore filling process, significantly elevating platform capacity. Additionally, ball-milled activated carbon demonstrates remarkable long-term cycling stability (92% capacity retention over 200 cycles at 200 mA g−1) and rate performance. This research offers a novel approach to developing advanced anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:To comprehensively evaluate the biological and abiotic influence of powdered activated carbon (PAC) on the anaerobic digestion of cornstalk, mesophilic and thermophilic digestion were conducted. Adding PAC (10 g/L) under thermophilic system obtained the maximum cellulose degradation rate and methane yield (MY), which were 57.47% and 128.19 L/kg VS. However, adding same dose of PAC at mesophilic system decreased the MY by 8.16% while increased the cellulose degradation rate and methane production rate by 6.48% and 17.92%. Under mesophilic conditions, the enhancement of PAC was owing to the enrichment of cellulolytic microorganisms, improvement of the syntrophic process and direct interspecies electron transfer. The lower methane yield was attributed to the adsorption of carbon source by PAC and CH4 consumption by Norank_c_Bathyarchaeia. The good performance of thermophilic system was owing to the lower adsorption capability of PAC, absence of Norank_c_Bathyarchaeia, and concentrated carbon flow to methane.

Abstract:In this study, we used coal based activated carbons as starting material and phenolic resin (PR) as a bonding agent to prepare spherical shaped activated carbons. The textural properties of SAC were characterized by BET surface area, XRD, SEM, iodine adsorption, strength intensity and pressure drop. According to the results, the spherical activated carbon prepared with activated carbon and PR at a ratio of 60:40 was found to have the best formation of spherical shape, which was found in sample SAC40. After activation, SAC40 has high BET surface area, iodine adsorption capability and strength value, and lowest pressure drop.

Abstract:Porous carbon microspheres with a regular spherical shape were prepared from bamboo pulp fiber through the hydrothermal carbonization process with the assistance of hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid. It was observed that a higher concentration of hydrochloric acid resulted in increased yields of carbon microspheres with porous surfaces compared to phosphoric acid, and the specific surface area was reached 923.9 m 2 /g after Na 2 CO 3 activation. The resulting PCS-Cl-0.1 electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 292.8F/g at 0.2 A/g and excellent rate performance. Effect of Porosity and Crystallinity of Activated Carbons for Electrochemical Capacitors

Abstract:Activated carbons (ACs) are usually utilized for the electrochemical capacitor due to their inherent properties, such as large surface area, high chemical stability, and good electrical conductivity. In this study, the commercial and chemically activated ACs with various surface areas were prepared and evaluated for their capacitance. The capacitances were generally increased as increasing the surface areas, but the highest surface area always did not lead to the highest capacitance. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area of chemically activated coconut-ACs (2,209 m2/g) was lower than chemically activated wood-ACs (2,903 m2/g), but the capacitance was higher. It was found that the major factor for the capacitance was not only the surface area, but also the electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity is usually associated with crystallinity, which is represented by the nanographitic domain size and crystalline thickness along the c-axis (Lc). The crystalline structure enhances the electron mobility, increasing the capacitance. The conductivities of prepared ACs were measured at different pressures, and their crystalline structure was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:Recently, there has been a growing concern for environmental protection. Herein, an economical, sustainable, and green method for synthesizing activated carbon from waste using Sapindus peels and oyster shell powder is reported. Oyster shell powder decomposes into CO 2 at high temperatures and can be used as a physical activator. In this study, we discuss the difference between physical, chemical, and hybrid activation. Through proper treatment, the original specific surface area of 12.8 m 2 g −1 for Sapindus peel biochar was increased to 1175–1537 m 2 g −1 . In addition, activated carbons rich in 4 nm mesopores can be obtained by simple physical activation with oyster shell powder. In applications, the prepared electrodes showed a high specific capacitance of 258.1 F g −1 at 5 mV s −1 . The assembled supercapacitor also exhibited excellent electrochemical performance with a capacitance retention of 81.9 % after 5000 test cycles and a coulombic efficiency close to 100 % during the test.
