Abstract:The low mechanical reliability of bioactive glasses (BGs) is a critical limitation in hard tissue prosthetics. Herein, the effect of sol–gel-derived calcium borosilicate system (CBS) with low-melting temperature on the mechanical properties and biodegradation of 45S5 BG-derived bioactive glass-ceramics (BGC) was investigated. The 45S5 BG-based BGCs with 0–20% CBS content were fabricated via sintering treatment at 700–1100°C. The results confirmed that the sintering temperature range of 850–900°C for the 10% CBS-containing BGC (45S5/CBS10) exhibited higher compressive strength than those treated at either lower or higher temperature, and the strength was almost 2.5–3.0-fold higher than that of the pure 45S5 BGC. The 45S5/CBS10 BGCs fabricated at 850–900°C showed excellent biodegradation and bioactivity when soaking in Tris buffer and simulated body fluid, while the compressive strength only decreased slightly. Specifically, the 45S5/CBS10 scaffolds with a porosity of ~70% showed ~8.0MPa in compressive strength, which is comparable to the compressive values of human trabecular bone. It is, therefore, believed that the sol–gel-derived CBS is suitable for reinforcing the melt-derived BG and is helpful for developing low-temperature sintering BGC porous biomaterials because of their integration in appreciable biodegradation and reasonable mechanical properties.

Abstract:Abstract Glass ionomer cements (GIC) are used in restorative dentistry and their properties (low heat during setting, adhesion to mineralised tissue and surgical metals) make them of great interest for bone applications.However, dental GIC are based on aluminium-containing glasses, and the resulting release of aluminium ions from the cements needs to be avoided for applications as bone cements. Replacing aluminium ions in glasses for use in glass ionomer cements is challenging, as aluminium ions play a critical role in the required glass degradation by acid attack as well as in GIC mechanical stability. Magnesium ions have been used as an alternative for aluminium in the glass component, but so far no systematic study has looked into the actual role of magnesium ions. The aim of the present study is therefore the systematic comparison of the effect of magnesium ions compared to calcium ions in GIC glasses. It is shown that by partially substituting MgO for CaO in simple SiO2-CaO-CaF2 glasses, ion release from the glass and, subsequently, GIC setting behaviour can be adjusted. Magnesium ions act as typical network modifiers here but owing to their larger field strength compared to calcium ions reduce ion release from the glasses significantly. By choosing an optimum ratio of magnesium and calcium ions in the glass, GIC setting and subsequently compressive strength can be controlled.

Abstract:A three-layer fully-connected feedforward neural network with 35 input neurons, 10 hidden neurons, and 26 output neurons has been developed and implemented directly in hardware. The digital neurons use 12-bit two's complement fixed-point weights and symmetric saturating linear activation functions. The hidden layer and output layer contain 360 and 286 12-bit weights respectively. The neural network was developed with VHDL and synthesized for an XC2V4000-6BF957 X iVirtex-2 FPGA. All calculations within each neural layer are performed in parallel. The neural network was configured and trained to solve the classic character recognition problem. The network was trained in MATLAB using floating-point numbers and an uncorrupted character set. The trained network achieved a 100% recognition rate on the perfect characters as well as characters that had up to 29% of their pixels flipped. When the floating-point computations from MATLAB were performed instead with 12-bit fixed-point weights in the Xilinx FPGA, for the characters tested to date, uncorrupted character recognition remained at 100% and noisy character recognition was not significantly affected by the loss of precision.

Abstract:We propose two 2-bit adders, Type-A and Type-B, as the basic cells for three novel low-voltage (1.1 V) micropower 16-bit asynchronous adders: Adder-A, Adder-B and Adder-AB. Adder-A employs Type-A adders and features high speed and low power dissipation. Adder-B employs Type-B adders and has lower speed and features lower power dissipation. By combining Type-A and Type-B, the hybrid Adder-AB design features the same power dissipation as Adder-B but with significantly higher speed. We analytically derive the speed and power dissipation of our designs. We compare our designs with reported synchronous and asynchronous designs and show that our designs have some improved parameters over these reported designs.

Abstract:--This paper presents the design of a Fuzzy PID controller (FPID) based on fuzzy logic with a PID structure with many valued logic and reasoning. The self-turning Fuzzy PID control take in an error and the rate of change of error of the altitude and attitude of the quadrotor as the input to the fuzzy controller and use the fuzzy rules to adjust the PID parameter automatically. Simulations have been conducted to observe the differences in controlling the quadrotor in flight using the new FPID controller instead of using PID controller. The effectiveness of the developed FPID is verified using the dSPACE platform whereby the Simulink model of the controller is converted to a real time system to generate the control signals for the control of quad rotor helicopter.
Developing a novel glass ionomer cement with enhanced mechanical and chemical properties

Abstract:Objective To develop a novel glass ionomer cement (NGIC) with enhanced mechanical and chemical properties and assess its biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and ion release. Methods Nanosilver doped bioactive glass (NanoAg BAG) was synthesized by sol-gel method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The NanoAg BAG, together with poly(vinylphosphonic acid) (PVPA), alumino-fluorosilicate glass and poly-acrylic acid were used to synthesize NGIC. The optimal PVPA concentration for NGIC was determined by PVPA modified GIC's biocompatibility and mechanical properties and used to prepare NGIC specimens. NGIC specimens with NanoAg BAG at 0%, 1%, 2%, and 5% were allocated into Groups NGIC0, NGIC1, NGIC2, and NGIC5, respectively. The biocompatibility, surface morphology, elemental composition, surface topography, chemical properties, compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, and ion release of the NGIC were assessed. A conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC) was used as a control. Results A granular BAG with nano silver particles attached on its surface were found, indicating the successful synthesis of NanoAg BAG. PVPA at 10% presented the best effect in enhancing the biocompatibility and mechanical properties of PVPA modified GIC and was used to prepare NGIC specimens. NGIC1 showed similar biocompatibility, surface morphology and topography to GIC. Chemical properties results showed that NGICs showed the same adsorption peaks to GIC. The compressive strength (mean±SD in MPa) was 168.1 ± 29.7, 205.5 ± 29.5, 221.8 ± 46.8, 216.6 ± 59.3 and 167.7 ± 36.4, and the diametral tensile strength (mean±SD in MPa) was 14.1 ± 1.7, 18.3 ± 4.9, 21.2 ± 2.2, 17.2 ± 3.8 and 13.3 ± 3.3 for GIC, NGIC0, NGIC1, NGIC2 and NGIC5 respectively. NIGC0, NGIC1 and NGIC2 showed higher compressive and diametral tensile strength than GIC (p < 0.01). NGIC2 and NGIC5 showed higher release of fluoride, calcium, phosphate and silver ion than GIC and NGIC0 (p < 0.05). Conclusion A biocompatible NGIC with enhanced mechanical properties were developed. It presented enhanced fluoride, calcium, phosphate and silver ion release compared to conventional GIC.

Abstract:Abstract The 45S5 Bioglassr and its sintered bioactive glass-ceramic (BGC) have been widely investigated as bone implants, mainly for its ability to bond to hard tissues. However, high temperature treatment is not enough to improve its poor mechanical properties, but compromise its biologically relevant performances. The innovative BGC compositions based on the thermally treated 45S5 Bioglassr were developed by decreasing the P2O5 quantity and adding B2O3 (0-6%) into the Na2O–2CaO–3SiO2- based bioactive glasses (BG). The thermally treated BGCs were fully characterized from the microstructural and mechanical points of view and compared to each other. Their bioactivity and bio-dissolutionwere established by means of in vitro soaking tests. The new B2O3-added 45S5 BG analogues, named NCS-xB, can be transformed to crystalline phase (Na2Ca2Si3O9)-based BGCs of high compactness and bioactivity at a relatively low temperature heat treatment (≤ 900ºC), since their bioactivity is preserved. Our experimental results suggest that the new 45S5 BGC analogues with optimized composition exhibit improved micro- structural and mechanical properties, and are beneficial for making specific products such as porous scaffolds or composites for bone defect repair.
Effect of bioactive glass particles on mechanical and adhesion properties of resin cements.

Abstract:PURPOSE The aim of this study is to evaluate the mechanical and adhesive properties of three different resin cements with bioactive glass (BAG) incorporated in two different ratios. METHODS BAG was added to different resin cements (3M Rely-X Ultimate, GC Link Ace, and GC Link Force) in different ratios (5% and 10% by weight). The three-point flexural strength, microhardness, and bond strength properties were evaluated. The fracture types of the groups were then analyzed using a stereo microscope. The data were analyzed using a multifactorial analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc tests (α < 0.05). RESULTS The addition of BAG reduced the flexural strength of the resin cements (P < 0.05).The effect of BAG addition on the Vickers microhardness value was significantly different for each cement group (P < 0.05). In addition, with the exception of the GC link force group (10% BAG addition), the BAG addition decreased the bond strength of cements to dentin in all the groups (P = 0.171). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study confirmed that different resin cements comprising different ratios of BAG exhibited different flexural strength, hardness, and bond-strength properties. Since the bond strength values increased with the addition of 10% BAG in the GC Link Force cement group, the effects of different BAG compositions could be worth investigating in future studies.

Evaluation of dental cements derived from mixtures of highly reactive ionomer glasses and bottle glass: Cement manipulation, mechanical, fluoride ion releasing, radiopaque and setting properties

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the mechanical properties, fluoride release, radiopacity, and setting characteristics of dental cements derived from highly reactive ionomer glasses and bottle glass mixtures. Methods: Two highly reactive glass series, LG99 and LG117, were synthesized, milled, sieved, and characterized using XRD and laser particle size analysis. These glasses were mixed with predetermined ratios of ground bottle glass, poly(acrylic acid), and aqueous tartaric acid to form glass ionomer cements. The cements' working time (WT), setting time (ST), fluoride release, radiopacity, compressive strength (CS), and elastic modulus (EM) were evaluated. Mean differences in CS were analyzed using multivariate ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc test at p = 0.05. Results: The WT and ST for both groups ranged from 1.5 to 2.5 min. LG99 series cements showed significantly higher CS (∼65 MPa) and EM (∼2 GPa) than LG117 series (p < 0.05). Both series showed similar fluoride release profiles, peaking at 1.2 mmol/L at 28 days. Radiopacity for LG99 ranged from 0.97 to 1.34, while LG117 ranged from 0.60 to 0.95. Solid state 27Al magic-angle spinning-nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) confirmed the presence of Al(IV) and Al(VI), indicating setting completion by one day for both series. Bottle glass showed a chemical shift at 55.8 ppm, overlapping with LG99's Al(IV) signal. The 19F MAS NMR spectra revealed Al-F and F-Sr(n) species in all glasses, with LG117 forming CaF2 after one day in deionized water. Conclusion: Mixtures of highly reactive ionomer glass and bottle glass produced cements with satisfactory properties for dental applications. Further research is needed to optimize their formulation and properties.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate whether the combined use of thin sheet glass (FSG) and polyurethane acrylate (PUA) can enhance the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of glass ionomer cements (GICs) to improve the overall performance of commercial GICs. In this study, an innovative approach was employed by incorporating diluents and photoinitiators into PUA to develop a novel light‐curable PUA material. The PUA was then used to modify the GIC to obtain PUA‐modified GIC. Subsequently, physical and chemical methods were employed to corrode and chemically modify the glass fiber surface to acquire dried thin sheet glass (FSG). Different proportions of FSG (10%, 20%, and 30% by mass) were mixed with PUA‐GIC to obtain FSG‐PUA modified GIC. Mechanical and biocompatibility tests were conducted on regular GIC, PUA‐GIC, resin‐modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC), and various proportions of FSG‐PUA‐GIC materials, including flexural strength, surface hardness, water absorption rate, solubility, shear strength, compressive strength (CS), in vitro cytotoxicity, as well as short‐term oral toxicity and subcutaneous implantation trials. A novel FSG‐PUA modified GIC was successfully prepared, which not only retained the excellent biocompatibility and fluoride ion release capacity of the original GIC but also significantly enhanced its mechanical strength and durability. The application of this innovative method provides a new direction for the development of dental restorative materials, particularly in addressing the shortcomings of GICs in terms of mechanical performance. The addition of FSG notably increased the flexural strength and surface hardness of GICs, especially at a 20% additive level, demonstrating superior performance compared with standard Fuji IX (F9) and slightly better than RMGIC. Water absorption rate and solubility initially decreased and then increased with an increase in FSG content, and significantly outperformed F9 and RMGIC at 10% and 20% additive levels. Shear strength and CS decreased with an increase in FSG content but remained superior to commercial groups. Material incubation with cells in vitro for 24–48 h showed no significant impact on cell viability, with cell viability exceeding 90%. Short‐term oral toxicity tests demonstrated good biocompatibility of the material, and subcutaneous implant trials did not observe any significant inflammation or pathological changes within 12 weeks of observation. The use of FSG‐PUA materials effectively enhances the mechanical properties of GIC materials, demonstrating excellent biocompatibility and significant potential as dental restorative materials. Among them, the 20% FSG‐PUA modified GICs exhibited significantly superior flexural strength, surface hardness, shear strength, water absorption, and solubility compared with F9 and slightly surpassing RMGIC, showcasing the best mechanical performance.

Abstract:Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is one of the most widely used restorative materials for temporary fillings and reconstructions in dentistry, but it has relatively poor mechanical properties that make its use limited, especially in places subject to high pressure. Thus, to extend the applicability of GIC, samples based on SiO2, P2O5, Al2O3, CaF2, and NaF were prepared with the addition of calcium oxide CaO extracted from natural sources (oyster shells) in different ratios of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25% wt. The suggested glass samples were evaluated, and their physical and mechanical properties were compared. XRD, SEM, and FTIR were performed on the samples. 24 specimens were prepared for each test in order to assess the mechanical properties as per the specific requirements. The tests included measuring bending strength, elastic modulus, adjusted direct tensile strength, absorption, water solubility, and diffusion coefficients after the specimens were stored in distilled water for 60 days. All calculations were carried out in accordance with standard procedures. The findings indicated a slight improvement in the bending resistance of the recommended GIC. Glass modified with 20% by weight of calcium oxide was the best among the ratios in terms of the results obtained and compared to the traditional commercial type. The malleable strength of the sample was 54.121 MPa, while the flexural modulus increased, the tensile strength reached 10.154 MPa, and the solubility was 25.87 µg/mm3 after storage for 60 days. These indicate that the developed material is suitable for use as a dental restoration material when compared to international commercial cement specifications.
Using Functionalized Micron-Sized Glass Fibres for the Synergistic Effect of Glass Ionomer on Luting Material

Abstract:This laboratory experiment was conducted with the objective of augmenting the mechanical properties of glass ionomer cement (GIC) via altering the composition of GIC luting powder through the introduction of micron-sized silanized glass fibres (GFs). Experimental GICs were prepared through the addition of two concentrations of GFs (0.5% and 1.0% by weight) to the powder of commercially available GIC luting materials. The effect of GF in set GIC was internally evaluated using micro-CT while the mechanical attributes such as nano hardness (nH), elastic modulus (EM), compressive strength (CS), and diametral tensile strength (DTS) were gauged. Additionally, the physical properties such as water solubility and sorption, contact angle (CA), and film thickness were evaluated. Reinforced Ketac Cem Radiopaque (KCR) GIC with 0.5 wt.% GF achieved improved nH, EM, CS, and DTS without affecting the film thickness, CA or internal porosity of the set GIC cement. In contrast, both GF-GIC formulations of Medicem (MC) GIC showed the detrimental effect of the GF incorporation. Reinforcing KCR GIC with 0.5 wt.% silanized GFs could improve the physical and mechanical attributes of luting material. Silanized GF, with optimal concentration within the GIC powder, can be used as a functional additive in KCR GIC with promising results.
Rational Design of Biofunctional Borosilicate Glasses: Tuning Therapeutic Ions and in Vitro Biological Evaluation

Abstract:Introducing therapeutic ions of bioactive glasses as scaffolds is appealing due to attractive architectural biomimicry of bone extracellular matrix and adjustable composition accompanied with soluble ions released for bone regeneration and remodeling. Herein, this strategy was expanded to develop biocomposites of borosilicate glasses incorporated with different therapeutic ions using a facile sol-gel technique and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template. Mediating therapeutic ions (i.e., copper/selenium/strontium at the same content) in a SiO2–B2O3–CaO–P2O5 glassy system is effective and simple method for modifying structural-morphological features and physicochemical characteristics of the bioglasses. In vitro bioactivity measurements revealed that strontium/selenium-doped borosilicate glasses had faster apatite-formation ability compared to copper-doped borosilicate glasses. For in vitro drug release, rhodamine B (RB) storage and release showed that copper-doped borosilicate glasses had high storage capacities (79.42%) and cumulated release rate (87.18% at pH 1.2), and demonstrated sustained pH-sensitive drug release patterns. The RB release profiles also showed two-stage release mechanism following the Korsmeyer-Peppas model during the first release stage (the first 24 h), and the Weibull model during next stage (beyond 24 h). In subsequent bacterial studies, copper-doped borosilicate glasses could effectively inhibit (100% at 2.5 mg mL–1) Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus colonization. In vitro biocompatibility assays also showed that all bioglass samples were biocompatible. According to obtained data, present bicomponent composite strategy may pave the way for the design of bioglasses doped with functional ions tailored to induce biological activity that can heal infectious bone in vivo.
In vitro compressive strength and edge stability testing of directly repaired glass-ionomer cements

Abstract:Objective: To study the repair potential of seven commercial glass-ionomer cements (GICs) using an in vitro edge compression test model. Materials and methods: A total of 448 normal and 192 repaired cylindrical specimens (6 × 4 mm) were produced from 6 GICs and one resin-modified GIC. Repaired samples consisted of a base aged for 1 month before repaired by an overlying layer. All samples were matured for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 3 months before compression, and edge tests were performed respectively on the whole surface (compressive strength, CS) or on the edge (edge stability, ES) using a universal testing machine. Results: For normal specimens, Ketac Universal (KU) illustrated a significantly higher CS than other groups at all time points (p < 0.001). ES of KU was weaker than EQUIA Forte (EQF), FIX (Fuji IX) and RSC (Riva Self Cure) after 1 day, increasing after 1 week. Repaired specimens showed CS comparable to normal specimens (p > 0.05). Repaired KU significantly improved CS compared to repaired EQF and Fuji II (FII) after 1 day. No statistical difference was found in ES among these groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: KU provided the fastest maturation and greatest CS and ES in both normal and repair models after short-term ageing. Repair of GICs could potentially be achieved directly onto the fractured substrate and the subsequent improved mechanical performance could be maintained for at least 3 months. Clinical relevance: This study provides a potential alternative in-vitro method to assess GIC restoration failure as well as provide insight into the mechanisms of GIC restoration repair.
Computational study of the relative stability of some glass-ionomer cement-forming molecules

Abstract:This work is part of a larger study whose main objective was to find a series of promising molecules to be used as glass-ionomer-type materials. The project was divided into 3 successive stages; the results of the first stage have been previously published and were used to continue the study. The molecules evaluated in the second stage were constructed by adding a glycidyl methacrylate molecule to the carboxylic groups of the polyacids selected in the previous stage. The modeling was done using the density functional theory for M06-2X/6-311G(d,p). The results indicate that the addition over the carboxylic groups of the fraction of the molecule, corresponding to itaconic acid, is thermodynamically favored. The final stage was modeled with the M06 functional and consisted of obtaining basic structures of glass-ionomer-type materials, by acid-base reaction between the molecules resulting from the second stage with individual ions of Ca (2 +), Zn (2 +), or Al (+ 3). It was concluded that aluminum atoms generate more compact structures that would correlate with more resistant materials.

Abstract:Background Glass ionomer cement (GIC) serves as a crucial biomaterial in dental restoration, offering applications in filling, lining, and adhesive procedures. Nevertheless, its mechanical properties often fall short, particularly in regions subjected to considerable stress. To address this issue, zirconia nanoparticles are incorporated at specific levels. Aim To assess the antimicrobial efficacy and compressive resilience of GIC modified with zirconia nanoparticles synthesized through green synthesis methods. Material and methods Zirconia nanoparticles were synthesized via a green method utilizing aloe vera extract in solvent form. These nanoparticles were then mixed into GIC at different concentration levels. Group I incorporated zirconia nanoparticles at a concentration of 3%, Group II at 5%, and Group III at 10%, while Group IV was the control, consisting of traditional GIC. Following that, samples were prepared and underwent characterization through various analytical techniques. The ability to inhibit microbial growth and the compressive resilience of the groups were examined. Microbial inhibition against the bacterial strains was assessed through minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and the ability to withstand compression was gauged by measuring the maximum force the specimen could endure before fracturing. Data underwent analysis with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, IBM Corp., Version 24.0, Armonk, NY). Repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) were utilized to gauge average MIC values and compressive strength. Following this, Tukey's post hoc test was employed for pairwise comparisons. Results The findings indicated, incorporating zirconia nanoparticles into GIC led to an improvement in its antimicrobial effectiveness, with a noticeable enhancement observed as the weight percent (% wt) of the additive increased. This improvement was notably noticeable in its effectiveness against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus, exceeding that of the control with a noteworthy distinction. Furthermore, there were significant enhancements in compressive strength, in Group I (180.48 ± 1.02), Group II (191.25 ± 0.52), and Group III (197.52 ± 0.75), compared to Group IV (167.22 ± 1.235), with significant disparities (p < 0.05). Conclusion The research illustrates that introducing green-synthesized zirconia nanoparticles into GIC leads to heightened bactericidal potency and compressive resilience when contrasted with the control group (Group IV). Notably, the highest concentration of 10% demonstrated the most favourable antimicrobial attributes alongside enhanced strength. Consequently, integrating green-synthesized zirconia nanoparticles into GIC holds potential as a proficient material. In future studies, there should be an exploration of molecular chemistry and bonding mechanisms to enhance our comprehension of its capabilities.

Abstract:Due to its characteristics distribution and virtualization, cloud storage also brings new security problems. User's data is stored in the cloud, which separated the ownership from management. How to ensure the security of cloud data, how to increase data availability and how to improve user privacy perception are the key issues of cloud storage research, especially when the cloud service provider is not completely trusted. In this paper, a cloud storage ciphertext retrieval scheme based on AES and homomorphic encryption is presented. This ciphertext retrieval scheme will not only conceal the user retrieval information, but also prevent the cloud from obtaining user access pattern such as read-write mode, and access frequency, thereby ensuring the safety of the ciphertext retrieval and user privacy. The results of simulation analysis show that the performance of this ciphertext retrieval scheme requires less overhead than other schemes on the same security level.
Utilizing an Oxidized Biopolymer to Enhance the Bonding of Glass Ionomer Luting Cement Particles for Improved Physical and Mechanical Properties

Abstract:This study aimed to determine the reinforcing effect of two weight ratios of Gum Arabic (GA) natural biopolymer, i.e., 0.5% and 1.0% in the powdered composition of glass ionomer luting cement. GA powder was oxidized and GA-reinforced GIC in 0.5 and 1.0 wt.% formulations were prepared in rectangular bars using two commercially available GIC luting materials (Medicem and Ketac Cem Radiopaque). The control groups of both materials were prepared as such. The effect of reinforcement was evaluated in terms of microhardness, flexural strength (FS), fracture toughness (FT), and tensile strength (TS). The internal porosity and water contact angle formation on the study samples were also evaluated. Film thickness was measured to gauge the effect of micron-sized GA powder in GA–GIC composite. Paired sample t-tests were conducted to analyze data for statistical significance (p < 0.05). The experimental groups of both materials containing 0.5 wt.% GA–GIC significantly improved FS, FT, and TS compared to their respective control groups. However, the microhardness significantly decreased in experimental groups of both cements compared to their respective control groups. The addition of GA powder did not cause a significant increase in film thickness and the water contact angle of both 0.5 and 1.0 wt.% GA–GIC formulations were less than 90o. Interestingly, the internal porosity of 0.5 wt.% GA–GIC formulations in both materials were observed less compared to their respective control groups. The significantly higher mechanical properties and low porosity in 0.5 wt.% GA–GIC formulations compared to their respective control group indicate that reinforcing GA powder with 0.5 wt.% in GIC might be promising in enhancing the mechanical properties of GIC luting materials.

Abstract:Oral contraceptive pills (OCP) represent the most common contraceptive method among teenagers and young adults. Because many women with cystic fibrosis (CF) are now surviving into childbearing age and are at risk for the complications of pregnancy in CF, oral contraceptive use may be indicated. However, it has been suggested that OCP use by CF patients may be associated with deterioration in pulmonary function. Ten adolescent and young adult women with CF and moderate-to-severe obstructive lung disease were studied while taking a combination oral contraceptive pill (Ovral 28). No significant deterioration was found in clinical status or pulmonary function. Careful follow-up should nevertheless be continued to monitor for other adverse effects of oral contraceptive use in CF, such as cholelithiasis.

Abstract:Glass ionomer cements (GICs) have been available for use by clinicians for almost 50 years. Their beneficial properties, such as adhesion to tooth substance, have long been recognized, but early materials suffered from brittleness, lack of translucency, poor wear resistance and solubility in oral fluids. Hence, over the years, new variants have been developed with a view to overcoming these difficulties. If the latest materials were found to be clinically successful in loadbearing situations in posterior teeth, they could hold advantages because of their easier placement than resin composite materials and possibly be more cost-effective. It is therefore the purpose of this article to review recent research into the performance of the laboratory and clinical performance of high viscous GICs and the so-called glass hybrid materials that have developed from the conventional GICs. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Glass ionomer materials, which, unlike resin composite restorations do not need a separate bonding agent, may hold technique advantages during restoration placement.
