Abstract:High flexibility has been one of advantages for one-dimensional semiconductor nanowires (NWs) in wide application of nanoscale integrated circuits. We investigate the bending effects on lasing action of CdSe NWs. Threshold increases and differential efficiency decreases gradually when we decrease the bending radius step by step. Red shift and mode reduction in the output spectra are also observed. The bending loss of laser oscillation is considerably larger than that of photoluminescence (PL), and both show the exponential relationship with the bending radius. Diameter and mode dependent bending losses are investigated. Furthermore, the polarizations of output can be modulated linearly by bending the NWs into different angles continuously. Abstract:The characteristics of curved semiconductor nanowire (NW) lasers were investigated. The red-shift in the laser spectra with increasing bending angles can be observed much more clearly than that in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Due to oscillation of light in resonant cavity, the bending loss of laser exhibits multiple times amplification of that of PL. Furthermore, an abnormal phenomenon of dominant peak switching is found in curved NWs when increasing the pump power, which has been first discovered and reported.

Abstract:A recent communication [Opt. Commun. doi:<a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1016/j.optcom.2010.06.076" href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.optcom.2010.06.076" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.optcom.2010.06.076</a> (2010)] presents experimental results in which dark pulses are observed in a dispersion-managed (DM) net-anomalous dispersion fiber laser. Disagreement on the formation mechanism proposed in this communication, we would like to indicate a more accurate explanation in order to clarify some potential misunderstanding on dark pulses in fiber lasers.

Abstract:Abstract Bendable light beams have recently seen tremendous applications in optical manipulation, optical imaging, optical routing, micromachining, plasma generation and nonlinear optics. By exploiting curved light beams instead of traditional Gaussian beam for line-of-sight light communications, here we propose and demonstrate the viability of free-space data-carrying bendable light communications along arbitrary trajectories with multiple functionalities. By employing 39.06-Gbit/s 32-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (32-QAM) discrete multi-tone (DMT) signal, we demonstrate free-space bendable light intensity modulated direct detection (IM-DD) communication system under 3 different curved light paths. Moreover, we characterize multiple functionalities of free-space bendable light communications, including bypass obstructions transmission, self-healing transmission, self-broken trajectory transmission, and multi-receiver transmission. The observed results indicate that bendable light beams can make free-space optical communications more flexible, more robust and more multifunctional. The demonstrations may open a door to explore more special light beams enabling advanced free-space light communications with enhanced flexibility, robustness and functionality.

Abstract:Self-phase modulation of light in a nonlinear medium is a well-known phenomenon resulting from the intensity dependence of refractive indices. Its occurrence in space leads to self-focusing or defocusing, while its occurrence in time yields spectral broadening. With ultrashort laser pulses, the spectral broadening can be so strong as to form a continuum extending from IR to near UV. Such a broadening has been used extensively as a continuum source in the studies of ultrafast phenomena, but its basic understanding is not yet complete.

Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate that electromagnetic waves can self-collimate and propagate unidirectionally in photonic crystals fabricated using semicylindrical ferrite rods in magnetized states. The parity and time-reversal symmetries of such photonic crystals are broken, resulting in a self-collimated one-way body wave within the photonic crystals. By applying the bias magnetic field in a complex configuration, the self-collimated one-way wave beam can be bent into arbitrary trajectories within the photonic crystal, providing an avenue for controlling wave beams.

Abstract:Light-induce bending of photochromic LCEs is a newly found phenomenon, with potential applications such as artificial muscles, nano actuators and remote-controllable implements. To simulate this, light-induced bending models of straight and curved beams can be derived from the simple beam theory. The effect of the light is substituted as an effective bending moment. Several examples, with different approximations, boundary conditions, under uniform or nonuniform illuminations, are demonstrated to calculate the curvature, the restraining force or the deflection. Especially, under weak light intensities and low temperature, the analytical expression of the curvature is obtained. A simplified remote controllable grip hand is simulated by the curved beam bending model. We calculate the grip force of the hand to hold a body, controlled by light and heat. The simulation shows that the largest value of grip stress can be about 1Mpa. In order to optimize the light-induced bending, the effects on the effective moment of the parameters, such as the light intensity, the thickness of the beam and the decay distance of the material are further analyzed. It is found that the effective moment is not a monotonic function of these parameters. Therefore, proper light intensity, material and thickness must be chosen to get the largest bending.

Abstract:We present an experimental observation of the output responses of a Nd:YAG microchip laser with an anisotropic external cavity under weak optical feedback. The feedback mirror is stationary during the experiments. A pair of acousto-optic modulators is used to produce a frequency shift in the feedback light with respect to the initial light. The laser output is a beat signal with 40 kHz modulation frequency and is separated into two orthogonal directions by a Wollaston prism. Phase differences between the two intensity curves are observed as the laser works in two orthogonal modes, and vary with the external birefringence element and the pump power. Theoretical analyses are given, and the simulated results are consistent with the experimental phenomena.

Abstract:The output responses of phase, amplitude, and polarization of light intensity of a He–Ne laser with the birefringent external cavity are presented. All phenomena are observed in two orthogonal directions related to the birefringent element’s orientation, and are studied under weak optical feedback. Experiments are carried out in five available detecting positions. It is found that laser intensities are modulated in the two orthogonal directions simultaneously, with a phase difference dominated by the phase retardation of the birefringence element. The modulation amplitudes are different in the two directions. A special polarization phenomenon is also observed and discussed. This research may provide a potential novel measuring principle for transparent birefringent materials.

Abstract:In this paper, a light-induced bending model is proposed to simulate the bending deflection and stress distribution of certain photochromic liquid crystal elastomer, basing on the simple beam theory. An optical bending moment is applied to replace the effect of light. As a result, the stress distribution along the thickness is nonlinear, with two or three zero-stress planes. A two-dimensional finite element analysis is further implemented to analyze the bending behavior and the stress distribution.

Abstract:A novel deflection effect of an intense laser beam with spin angular momentum is revealed theoretically by an analytical modeling using radiation pressure and momentum balance of laser plasma interaction in the relativistic regime, as a deviation from the law of reflection. The reflected beam deflects out of the plane of incidence with a deflection angle up to several milliradians, when a non-linear polarized laser, with the intensity $I_0\sim10^{19}$W/cm$^2$ and duration around tens of femtoseconds, is obliquely incident and reflected by an overdense plasma target. This effect originates from the asymmetric radiation pressure caused by spin angular momentum of the laser photons. The dependence of the deflection angle of a Gaussian-type laser on the parameters of laser pulse and plasma foil is theoretically derived, which is also confirmed by three dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of circularly polarized laser beams with the different intensity and pulse duration.

Abstract:An emerging vision for future advances in the modern photonics is to explore the fundamental concepts of light coherently shaped in phase, amplitude, and polarization in different scenarios. In this paper, the conversion between linear and circular polarizations in free space by the beam itself is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. Any two orthogonal polarizations can occur and auto-focus at different propagation distances during the structured caustic vector optical field with radially-variant states of polarization propagating in free space. The desired polarization states and the two foci can be flexibly managed by the initial caustic phase and polarization distributions. Abstract:Photochromic liquid crystal elastomer was recently reported to be able to deform largely and bend under illumination. In this paper, considering the opto-chemical process and the nematic–isotropic phase transition, we introduce the light and temperature into the constitutive relation of the liquid crystal elastomers, and propose a model for the light-induced bending. The dynamic deflection curve equation of the light-induced bending is derived based on the Hamilton principle. In the equation, the effect of light is introduced as an effective optical bending moment, which is caused by the inhomogeneous light-induced strain and Young's modulus. Several simulation examples are given to show the light-induced bending under different boundary conditions and various illumination or temperature controlling. Under the condition of deep nematic phase and weak enough illumination, the approximate analytical expression of the effective moment and the stress distribution can be obtained. Rich nonlinear behaviors are found in this model. The effective moment is a non-monotonic function of time, thickness ratio, and light intensity when the thickness ratio is not very large. The stress distribution through the thickness is nonlinear with two or three zero-stress planes.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a device to bend light in non-channel planar photonic crystal (PhC) waveguides using the self-collimation phenomenon. The mode distribution in a non-channel planar PhC waveguide is investigated in detail in order to help understand the proposed bending mechanism. Three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations show an over 80% bending efficiency for a 90 degree bend. As the first proposal for bending light in a non-channel planar PhC waveguide, the presented device enables the application of routing in non-channel planar PhC waveguides.

Abstract:The polarization dynamics of a quasi-isotropic single-mode laser subjected to multiple optical feedback is presented. The variable duty cycle of two eigenstates is observed in high-frequency optical fringes. The high-frequency optical fringes are induced by the multiple reflections in the asymmetry feedback cavity. The duty cycle of two eigenstates can be controlled easily by adjusting the position of polarization flipping due to the residual stress of laser mirror. Particularly, when the frequency difference results from residual stress is reduced to 1.5MHz, the position of polarization flipping moves to the edge of each fringe which can be used to measure small displacement with direction sensitivity and high resolution. Abstract:Spectral modulation of high-order harmonics generated in relativistic laser-solid interaction is investigated. Numerical simulations show that the modulation depends on surface plasma density profile, resulting in spectral envelope modulation and regular and irregular harmonic splitting. The mathematical and physical connections between the spectral modulation of high-order harmonics and the temporal modification of attosecond pulse train are explained.
