Abstract:This work experimentally demonstrates improvement of the fast light property in erbium-doped amplifiers at room temperature. The difference between the signal power and the pump power associated with bending loss is used to control the signal power at the different positions of the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) to improve the fast light property. Periodic bending of the EDF increases the time advance of the probe signal by over 288%. Additionally, this concept also could improve the fast light property using coherent population oscillations in semiconductor optical amplifiers.

Abstract:A half-filling technique was demonstrated to improve the bending properties of a fluid-filled photonic crystal fiber. Such a technique can realize to fill selectively a fluid into half of air holes in a PCF. The bending properties of the half-filled PCF are quite different from those of the fully-filled PCF. Distinct bending properties were observed when the half-filled PCF was bent toward different fiber orientations. Especially, the transmission spectrum of the half-filled PCF was hardly affected while the fiber was bent toward the filled-hole orientation.

Abstract:We proposed a novel photonic crystal fiber composed of a double-cladding square lattice that could be used in dual-band, Er and Tm optical gain bands, simultaneously supporting a large negative dispersion and a high birefringence. We theoretically investigated the light guiding property through the proposed photonic crystal fiber by using a vectorial finite-element method with a perfectly matched layer. By optimizing the structural parameters, we obtained an ultra-large negative dispersion of 20,186 ps(nmkm) and a very high birefringence of 9.27 103 at the wavelength of 1.55 m in the Er gain band and a very large negative dispersion of 8,067 ps(nmkm) and a high birefringence of 1.0 103 at the wavelength of 1.87 m in the Tm band. We further discussed the roles of waveguide parameters on the chromatic dispersion, its slope, and the birefringence of the fiber as well as the mode field diameter. The proposed fiber could be directly applied for dual-band dispersion and polarization control in fiber laser cavities as well as optical communications and sensors in the dual bands.

Abstract:A sapphire fiber is curved to form a small V-shaped sensor head, a modulated LED reference signal is launched into the sensing fiber, the sensor obtains the temperature information by the ratio of the radiation and the reference signal, eliminates unstable factors of the optical system. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results show that it is a good method to retain the high stability of the dual-band system without sacrificing the high sensibility of the single-band system. Abstract:We designed a multidefect nonlinear superstructure fiber (SF) to serve as the gain medium of optical parametric amplification. In both theoretical derivation and simulation results, the signal amplification proved to achieve enhancement at certain frequencies where the local field intensities were increased or the slow group velocities of the modes were greatly slowed down on the band edges to offset the negative effect raised by large wave vector mismatching.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel approach to demonstrate optically controllable pulse group velocity at telecommunication wavelengths in EDF due to CPO. First we reviewed recent advances in slow-light-based optical signal processing, then we study slow and fast light propagation in erbium doped fiber abstractly based on theory and simulation model. It is revealed though the research that the time delay and advancement depends greatly on the pump power, influence of the ion density on the group velocity of light propagation is also studied. Based on our discussion, the optimization parameters should be selected in order to obtain more appropriate time delay and the slowdown of group velocity, which is of great importance to the communication industry.

Abstract:Optical microfibers drawn from conventional fibers have attracted considerable interests and have found many novel applications. Here, we review recent advances in ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers. Starting with characteristics and fabrication of optical microfibers, which are closely related to ultrafast fiber lasers, we show that characteristics of large portion of evanescent field, tailorable dispersion, high optical nonlinearity, very low optical loss and full compatibility with conventional fibers are greatly beneficial to novel ultrafast fiber lasers. We then highlight recent works on ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers in terms of fast saturable absorbers made from optical microfiber-supported nanomaterials, dispersion management and high optical nonlinearity, as well as some other novel ultrafast fiber lasers. Finally, we briefly discuss future opportunities for optical microfiber-based ultrafast fiber lasers, such as high-order dispersion management, nonlinearity management and applications for sensing and measurement.

Abstract:Er-doped optical fiber (EDF) with ultra-broad gain bandwidth is urgently needed given the rapid advancement of optical communication. However, the weak crystal field of the host silica glass severely restricts the bandwidth of traditional EDF at 1.5 μm. In this study, we theoretically explored the introduction of PbS nanomaterials in the silica network assisted with the non-bridging oxygen. This can significantly increase the crystal field strength of Er3+ ions in the local structure, leading to their energy level splitting and expanding the fluorescence bandwidth. Additionally, the PbS/Er co-doped optical fiber (PEDF) with improved fluorescence and gain characteristics was fabricated using modified chemical vapor deposition combined with the atomic layer deposition technique. The presence of PbS nanomaterials in the fiber core region, which had an average size of 4 nm, causes the 4I13/2 energy level of Er3+ ions to divide, increasing the fluorescence bandwidth from 32 to 39 nm. Notably, the gain bandwidth of PEDF greater than 20 dB increased by approximately 12 nm compared to that of EDF. The obtained PEDF would play an important role in the optical fiber amplifier and laser applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband optical emission from Bi/Er co-doped fiber and a single 830nm laser diode pump. The ultra-broadband mechanism is studied and discussed in details based on a combination of experimental measurements, including luminescence, differential luminescence and ESA, on fiber samples of different Bi and Er concentrations. The Er co-doping in Bi doped fiber is found to be effective for broadband emission, by enhancing not only luminescence at C and L bands but also that at O and shorter wavelength bands. The luminescence intensity between 1100 and 1570nm is over -45dBm/5nm in single mode fiber using a few meters of Bi/Er co-doped fiber and offers a modest ~40dB dynamic range and a broad bandwidth of ~470nm for an OSA based spectral measurement.

Abstract:Nonlinearity enhancement by slow light effect and strong light confinement in defect Bragg fibres is demonstrated and analysed in applications of fibre optical parametric amplifiers. Broadband low group velocity and zero dispersion as well as the strong light confinement by band gap enhances the nonlinear coefficient up to more than one order than the conventional high nonlinear fibres. Moreover, the zero dispersion wavelength of coupled core mode can be designed arbitrarily, under which the phase-matching bandwidth of the nonlinear process can be extended.

Abstract:The efficient generation of slow light in a singlemode Er-doped tellurite glass fibre, which has a Brillouin gain coefficient about an order of magnitude larger than silica fibre is reported. Pulses of 60 ns width were delayed by 67 ns in a 2 m length of fibre with a pump power of 630 mW. The large Brillouin gain and relatively low loss of tellurite fibre should be useful in the realisation of compact slow light devices operable at a lower pump power.

Abstract:We took a step forward on the basis of existing deduction, the formula of net gain coefficient of amplification of spontaneous emission of Er-doped fiber was given. Based on the data, which were provided by the reference, we calculated the net gain coefficients for different fiber length pumped at different pump power. Then theoretical curves were drawn. ASE spectra obtained experimentally were in excellent qualitative agreement with the ones obtained from theory. At last, the calculated optimal fiber lengths were given according to several common used wavelengths at the same pump power.

Abstract:Abstract This study has demonstrated the multimode parabolic index fibers integrated with spatiotemporal VCSEL sources for the optical fiber system improvement. Average radial intensity is clarified against fiber radius variations with 0.1 % refractive difference index step. The Max base band Q factor form is demonstrated against the fiber refractive index step variations. The Max base band Q factor form variations are demonstrated against VCSEL diode bias current variations. The Max base band Q factor form variations are clarified against the fiber core radius variations. The Max base band Q factor form is simulated against the fiber cladding thickness variations. Multimode fiber calculation report at the wavelength 1550 nm for the light source (Pol. X = VCSEL LP [0,1]) is reported. The Max lighted base optical band form power is clarified versus time after parabolic index multimode fiber with 0.1 % refractive difference index step. The Max optical lighted base band power form is demonstrated against wavelength after parabolic index multimode fiber with 0.1 % refractive difference index step. The Max base Q band form factor is simulated after spatial APD photodetector receiver with 0.1 % refractive difference index step. The fiber base band mode form intensity in x and d directions is demonstrated within the fiber with 0.1 % refractive difference index step. The fiber base band encircled flux form is studied and simulated versus fiber radius variations with 0.1 % refractive difference index step.

Abstract:Slow light based on four-wave mixing (FWM) wavelength conversion and dispersion is experimentally studied. The FWM bandwidth of the highly nonlinear fiber is measured to be 40 nm, which is also the slow light tunable bandwidth. A 34 ns delay of 500 MHz sine signal is achieved in standard single mode fiber, and 198 ns delay of short pulses with 100 ps width is achieved in dispersion compensation fiber (DCF). An advancement of 209 ns for the 100 ps short pulses is also achieved in the DCF. The method to increase the slow light delay is discussed, and large delay up to microseconds is expected when wideband FWM wavelength conversion and large dispersion fibers are used. The expected large delay will help us realize high efficiency fiber delay lines and all-fiber buffers.

Abstract:A novel erbium-doped photonic bandgap fiber (PBGF) with honeycomb cladding and down-doped solid-core is proposed in this letter. This fiber is more practicable than reported erbium-doped air-core PBGF due to its Gaussian-like field distribution and low confinement loss. Theoretical analysis shows that it can largely improve pump efficiency (gain-to-pump-power ratio) for small pump power and reduce the optimum fiber length by 20%-50% for a wide range of pump powers, compared with erbium-doped step-index fiber.

Abstract:A Fresnel mirror is introduced at a hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber end by fusion splicing a short single-mode fiber segment, to reflect the light backward to an optical frequency domain reflectometry. The backward Fresnel reflection is used as a probe light to achieve light speed measurement with a high resolution and a high signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, its group velocity is obtained with the round-trip time delay as well as the beat frequency at the reflection peak. Multiple Fresnel peaks are observed from 2180.00 Hz to 13,988.75 Hz, corresponding to fusion-spliced hollow-core fiber segments with different lengths from 0.2595 m to 1.6678 m, respectively. The speed of light in the air guidance is calculated at 2.9753 × 108 m/s, approaching that in vacuum, which is also in good agreement with 2.9672 × 108 m/s given by the numerical analysis with an uncertainty of 10−3. Our demonstration promises a key to hollow-core waveguide characterization for future wide-bandwidth and low-latency optical communication.

Abstract:Lasers at similar to 900 nm have been of vital importance in various fields, including material processing, underwater communications, and strong-field physics. Although Nd3+-doped materials have been employed for the similar to 900 nm laser, the similar to 900 nm emission is in strong competition with the often more dominating similar to 1060 nm emission, which strongly limits the output power and applications. This paper proposes a direct coordination engineering approach, which introduces halogen to the nearest coordination of Nd3+ in glass for increasing the bond covalency, leading to stronger emissions at similar to 900 nm than at similar to 1060 nm. Iodide-incorporated Nd3+-doped silica fibers show prevailing similar to 900 nm emission rarely observed in Nd3+-doped materials. Using the created fibers, a power (113.5W) 50 times higher than the current record is accomplished based on an all-fiber structure. Our approach holds the potential for regulating the spectroscopic properties of other rare-earth-doped laser materials.
