Abstract:A method to realize room-temperature operation of a multifrequency Er-doped fiber laser with low-frequency shift feedback placed within a linear laser cavity is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Simultaneous multiwavelength lasing with 0.5 nm wavelength spacing is experimentally demonstrated by applying a sinusoidal signal of 10 kHz to a fiber phase modulator inserted within the linear cavity to prevent single wavelength steady-state oscillation. In the linear cavity, an all-polarization-maintaining fiber Sagnac loop is used as a periodic filter, and a single-mode fiber loop with a polarization controller is used as a partial reflector and also as an output port.

Abstract:We proposed a novel photonic crystal fiber composed of a double-cladding square lattice that could be used in dual-band, Er and Tm optical gain bands, simultaneously supporting a large negative dispersion and a high birefringence. We theoretically investigated the light guiding property through the proposed photonic crystal fiber by using a vectorial finite-element method with a perfectly matched layer. By optimizing the structural parameters, we obtained an ultra-large negative dispersion of 20,186 ps(nmkm) and a very high birefringence of 9.27 103 at the wavelength of 1.55 m in the Er gain band and a very large negative dispersion of 8,067 ps(nmkm) and a high birefringence of 1.0 103 at the wavelength of 1.87 m in the Tm band. We further discussed the roles of waveguide parameters on the chromatic dispersion, its slope, and the birefringence of the fiber as well as the mode field diameter. The proposed fiber could be directly applied for dual-band dispersion and polarization control in fiber laser cavities as well as optical communications and sensors in the dual bands.

Abstract:This work experimentally demonstrates improvement of the fast light property in erbium-doped amplifiers at room temperature. The difference between the signal power and the pump power associated with bending loss is used to control the signal power at the different positions of the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) to improve the fast light property. Periodic bending of the EDF increases the time advance of the probe signal by over 288%. Additionally, this concept also could improve the fast light property using coherent population oscillations in semiconductor optical amplifiers.

Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel approach to demonstrate optically controllable pulse group velocity at telecommunication wavelengths in EDF due to CPO. First we reviewed recent advances in slow-light-based optical signal processing, then we study slow and fast light propagation in erbium doped fiber abstractly based on theory and simulation model. It is revealed though the research that the time delay and advancement depends greatly on the pump power, influence of the ion density on the group velocity of light propagation is also studied. Based on our discussion, the optimization parameters should be selected in order to obtain more appropriate time delay and the slowdown of group velocity, which is of great importance to the communication industry.

Abstract:This paper reports the double-line waveguides in Er,Yb:YAG prepared by femtosecond laser (fs-laser) writing at 1030 nm, 450 fs pulse and 100 kHz repetition rate. When light propagates at 632.8 nm along transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization, efficient single-mode guidance is demonstrated in the double-line structures. The minimum transmission loss is as low as 0.98 dB/cm in waveguide with space of 18 μm. The structural modifications in damaged tracks and strain-affected regions were characterized by confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy, and the refractive index variations were analyzed. The corresponding fluorescence emissions of Er3+ and Yb3+ are investigated in the Er,Yb:YAG double-line structure.

Abstract:We have demonstrated widely tunable Yb:fiber-based laser sources, aiming to replace Ti:sapphire lasers for the nJ-level ultrafast applications, especially for the uses of nonlinear light microscopy. We investigated the influence of different input parameters to obtain an expansive spectral broadening, enabled by self-phase modulation and further reshaped by self-steepening, in the normal dispersion regime before the fiber damage. We also discussed the compressibility and intensity fluctuations of the demonstrated pulses, to reach the transform-limited duration with a very low intensity noise. Most importantly, we have demonstrated clear two-photon fluorescence images from UV-absorbing fluorophores to deep red dye stains.

Abstract:Waveguides were written in Er-doped silica glasses by femtoscecond laser pulses. The waveguides exhibit a single mode at 632.8 nm with Gaussian profile and low propagation losses (<1dB over 4.8 mm). The optical properties like insertion losses and induced refractive index changes were measured and discussed. The optical gains at 1540 nm were measured as an active element in a standard waveguide amplifier setup. A maximum of 1dB internal gain at 200 mW, 976 nm pump were obtained.

Abstract:We present experimental results on an all-optical, thermally-assisted technique for broad range tuning of microsphere cavity resonance modes to arbitrary probe wavelengths. An Er:Yb co-doped phosphate glass (Schott IOG-2) microsphere is pumped at 978 nm via the supporting stem and the heat generated by absorption of the pump light expands the cavity and changes the refractive index. This is a robust tuning method that decouples the pump from the probe and allows fine tuning of the microsphere's whispering gallery modes. Pump/probe experiments were performed to demonstrate thermo-optical tuning to specific probe wavelengths, including the 5S1/2 F = 3 to 5P3/2 F' = 4 laser cooling transition of 85Rb. This is of particular interest for cavity QED-type experiments, while the broad tuning range achievable is useful for integrated photonic devices, including sensors and modulators.

Abstract:A dispersion tailoring scheme for obtaining slow light in a silicon-on-insulator W1-type photonic crystal waveguide, novel to our knowledge, is proposed in this paper. It is shown that, by simply shifting the first two rows of air holes adjacent to the waveguide to specific directions, slow light with large group-index, wideband, and low group-velocity dispersion can be realized. Defining a criterion of restricting the group-index variation within a +/- 0: 8% range as a flattened region, we obtain the ultraflat slow light with bandwidths over 5.0, 4.0, 2.5, and 1.0nm when keeping the group index at 38.0, 48.8, 65.2, and 100.4, respectively. Abstract:In this study, we propose a new type of slow light photonic crystal waveguide structure to achieve wideband slow light with low dispersion. The waveguide is based on a triangular lattice ellipse-hole photonic crystal imposed simply by a selective altering of the locations of the holes adjacent to the line defect. Under a constant group index criterion of ±10% variation, when group indices are nearly constants of 54, 69, and 80, their corresponding bandwidths of the flat band reach 12.7, 10.0, and 8.6 nm around 1550 nm, respectively. A nearly constant large group index-bandwidth product of 0.44 is achieved for all cases. Low dispersion slow light propagation is confirmed by studying the relative temporal pulse-width spreading with the two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method.

Abstract:We report on a wavelength-tunable large-normal-dispersion erbium-doped mode-locking fiber oscillator. By using a grating as spectral filter, the intra-cavity mode-locking spectrum can be tuned continuously. The laser produces 250 fs pulses with average power of 130 mW and a tunable center wavelength range from 1528 nm to 1570 nm.

Abstract:A simple and effective way to measure the group velocity of photonic crystal waveguides (PCWGs) is developed by using a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A PCWG with perfect air-bridge structure is fabricated and slow light with group velocity slower than c/80 is demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate, for the first time, an actively Q switched red-diode-clad-pumped Er3+/Dy3+ codoped fluoride fiber oscillator. Its wavelength can be continuously tuned over the range of 2.906-3.604 μm (698 nm), representing the widest tuning span of pulsed fluoride fiber oscillators in the mid-infrared. In addition, the achieved pulse energy at each wavelength of >2.95 μm is also higher than that of a previously reported pulsed fluoride fiber oscillator at the corresponding wavelength, to the best of our knowledge. By tuning the wavelength to 3.204 μm, the highest pulse energy of 82 μJ has been gotten with a pulse width of 520 ns at a repetition rate of 500 Hz.

Abstract:We report a single-wavelength tunable mode-locked fiber laser. The single wavelength can be tuned from 1537.49 nm to 1608.06 nm by introducing a Sagnac loop filter. As far as we know, this is the widest single-wavelength tuning range achieved in an erbium-doped mode-locked all-fiber laser based on nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). The laser's pulse width changes from 549 fs to 808 fs throughout the tuning process, the maximum average output power is 5.72 mW, and the single-pulse energy is 0.34 nJ at a central wavelength of 1556.53 nm. This laser source can serve as an efficient tool for applications that require a broad tunability range. The combination of femtosecond pulses and extensive wavelength tuning capabilities makes this laser system highly valuable in fields such as fiber optic communications, spectroscopy, sensing, and other applications that benefit from ultrafast and tunable laser sources.

Abstract:The symmetrical optical waveguide structures are fabricated in Er3+-doped aluminosilicate glass using 800 nm femtosecond laser writing in kHz repetition frequency regime. The impact of writing parameters on the waveguide preparation with a 10× microscope objective in the longitudinal writing scheme was studied in detail. The experimental results show that, under a fixed pulse energy value of 20 μJ, the waveguides can be realized with the scan speed from 20 to 160 μm/s, and with a fixed scan speed value of 160 μm/s, the waveguide can be prepared under an inscription energy range of 5–30 μJ, indicating that the waveguide can be realized in a wide range of writing parameters. The near-field mode intensity image shows that the waveguide region possesses excellent light guiding properties. Based on the refractive index profile reconstruction method, the maximum refractive index increase in the waveguide region is estimated to be about 5.5 × 10–4. The lowest propagation loss of the waveguide was measured to be about 1.51 dB/cm by the waveguide side scattering method. The microfluorescence spectra show that the gain characteristics of the waveguide region are well maintained after laser processing. This work shows that the fabrication of embedded optical waveguides using ultrashort pulse laser in Er3+-doped aluminosilicate glass has strong feasibility and great potential to create active gain devices in the field of integrated photonics and all-optical communication.

Abstract:<p>Organic photonic materials have high refractive index, fast transfer speed, low heat generation, and so on; and therefore, have great potential in optoelectronics and optical micro/nanocircuits. Herein, a new strategy using fluorescence–phosphorescence dual emission and disparity of optical loss in a smooth needle‐like organic crystal is reported to realize color tuning of the optical waveguide (OWG). Especially, a warm white‐light OWG emission is achieved by appropriately adjusting the excitation position, presenting the first report of single‐component organic waveguide with white light emission. Based on this, the as‐prepared 1D organic crystal has been demonstrated as a microscale optical correspondence device with multiple input and output responses, which offers potential applications in modern optics and photonics fields.</p>
