Abstract:We demonstrate, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a single-frequency pulsed fiber laser (SFPFL) operating in the important mid-infrared region. We employed a high precision germanium etalon along with a compound cavity to achieve a single-longitudinal-mode selection and home-synthesized MXene-Ta 4 C 3 Tx to initiate Q-switching in an Er 3+ -doped ZBLAN fiber laser. The MXene-Ta 4 C 3 Tx, synthesized through selective etching, exhibits a modulation depth of 14.8% and a saturation optical intensity of 3.62 GW/cm 2 at 2794.4 nm. The developed SFPFL is centered at 2780.06 nm with a linewidth as narrow as 320 kHz, and has an output power, repetition rate, pulse width, and pulse energy of 121.8 mW, 132.4 kHz, 1.48 μs, and 0.92 μJ, respectively. The high stability of the laser pulses is confirmed by the high radio-frequency signal-to-noise ratio of 50 dB. With the incorporation of a diffraction grating, wavelength tuning from 2753.14 to 2780.26 nm was achieved. Our findings introduce a wavelength-tunable SFPFL source characterized by high coherence, high stability, and low noise. This source effectively addresses the challenges associated with self-modulation-induced temporal instability, elevated noise levels, and reduced coherence typically encountered in conventional multi-longitude-mode Q-switching operations. In addition, our results reveal MXene-Ta 4 C 3 Tx as a promising all-optical passive modulator for laser pulse generation in the essential mid-infrared spectral region.

Abstract:Wavelength-switchable fiber laser systems have many potential applications. Herein, the use of an erbium-doped fiber laser based on parallel fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) (ASE: amplified spontaneous emission; BRM: broadband reflection mirror; CCD: charged-coupled device; EDFL: erbium-doped fiber laser; FBG: fiber Bragg gratings; IR: infrared; MZI: Mach–Zehnder interferometer; OSA: optical spectrum analyzer; OC: output coupler; PC: polarization controller; SNR: signal-to-noise ratios; 3D: three-dimensional; wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)) is proposed to achieve C + L band triple-wavelength-switchable laser output at approximately 1.5 μm. In the proposed system configuration, three parallel FBGs with different resonant wavelengths were fabricated using an 800 nm femtosecond pulsed laser. The proposed fiber laser incorporates first-order FBGs with the periods of 538, 542, and 547 nm. The femtosecond laser was propagated through polyimide coating and cladding and was focused onto the fiber core by a 63× oil lens, while FBGs were inscribed with the use of a point-by-point method to generate resonant wavelengths at 1555.3, 1569.2, and 1583.1 nm. When the FBGs were used as wavelength selectors, a lasing threshold of 85 mW was obtained, and switchable lasing with stable single- and dual-wavelength outputs was achieved based on the adjustment of a polarization controller. Concerning the switchable single-wavelength lasing, the signal-to-noise ratio was greater than 37.23 dB, and the 3 dB linewidth was less than 0.09 nm. The respective power fluctuation measurements were less than 0.22 and 0.68 dB for the single- and dual-wavelength lasers at 26 °C over a scan time of 30 min.

Abstract:We demonstrate a widely tunable single-frequency Er-doped ZBLAN fiber laser operating on a 4F9/2→4I9/2 transition band. An uncoated germanium (Ge) plate serves as a narrow-bandwidth etalon and is inserted in the cavity to achieve a single longitudinal mode selection. Wavelength tuning from 3373.8 nm to 3718.5 nm was demonstrated by using a blazed diffraction grating at 3.5 µm. At the emission peak of 3465.6 nm, the laser yields over 100 mW single-frequency output power, with a 3 dB linewidth <6.9 MHz, and a slope efficiency (with respect to the incident 1990 nm pump power) of 20.3%. Such a tunable mid-infrared single-frequency fiber laser may serve as a versatile laser source in spectroscopy and sensing applications.

Abstract:A tunable and switchable six-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a fiber Bragg grating based FP filter (FBG-FPF) and a polarization-maintaining fiber Sagnac loop (PMFSL) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally at room temperature. The FBG-FPF with low insertion loss is used to generate dense multiwavelength output. The PMFSL acts as a comb filter and frequency stabilizer. Through adjusting the squeezed fiber polarization controllers, six kinds of single-wavelength with the tunable range of 11 nm, eleven kinds of dual-wavelength, three kinds of triple-wavelength and one kind of six-wavelength can be obtained and switched with one another. All lasing lines with 3 dB linewidth of less than 0.29 nm and optical signal-to-noise ratio of more than 22 dB locate in the range of C- and L-bands of the optical communication waveband.

Abstract:A novel widely tunable and interval-adjustable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) is experimentally demonstrated in this paper. It is based on the cascaded structure of two-segment Sagnac filter and Lyot filter with the assistance of nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). By properly adjusting the polarization controllers (PCs) in the laser cavity, the output wavelengths with different flexible lasing states can be obtained, such as tunable single-, dual-, triple-wavelength outputs with a tuning range more than 18 nm. The outputs of quad-, quintuple-, sextuple- and septuple-wavelength can also be tuned, but the step size of the tuning is not fixed due to the intense wavelength competition. In addition, the outputs can achieve changes in wavelength interval. The switchability and tuning range of the laser have been greatly improved, and the wavelength interval adjustment is more flexible. The maximum SMSR of the output laser can up to 47 dB. This EDFL can be used in optical fiber sensing, WDM network and other fields desiring very flexible optical source.

Abstract:Based on the heavily Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped phosphate glass fiber (EYPF) with a larger emission cross-section, an efficient linearly-polarized single-frequency distributed Bragg reflector fiber laser at 1603 nm is demonstrated. By balancing the cavity length against the longitudinal mode spacing, a stable single-longitudinal-mode laser with more than 20 mW is generated from a 16-mm-long EYPF. The measured relative intensity noise of the fiber laser is less than -140 dB/Hz at frequencies of over 5 MHz. The signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 62 dB and the linewidth is less than 1.9 kHz, while the obtained polarization extinction ratio is higher than 25 dB. The L-band operating combined with the narrow linewidth and low noise characteristic makes this laser an ideal candidate for high-resolution molecular spectroscopy and coherent lidar applications. Abstract:A tunable erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. It is based on a tunable fiber filter using the pump induced refractive index change characteristics of the ErYb codoped phosphosilicate fiber (EYDF) based modal interferometer (MI). The laser achieves a tunability of 2.39nm and 1.60nm, with the wavelength linearly tuned from 1534.05nm to 1536.44nm and from 1554.36nm to 1555.96nm by changing the pump power injected into the MI. Its side mode suppression ratios are 30dB and 33dB, respectively. The stability of the tunable EDFL is getting better with the continuous improvement of the power of pump 1, and the dual-wavelength power fluctuations are less than 0.22dB and 0.12dB within 20 min at 250mW of pump 1, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract We demonstrate Q-switching operation of a single-moded mid-infraredEr 3+ -doped ZBLAN (Er:ZBLAN) fiber laser based on an acousto-optic modulator. The fiber laser can produce steady Q-switched pulses as short as 24.8 ns at an average output power of 45.7 mW with a single transverse mode, corresponding to a peak power of 18.4 kW. In addition, a wavelength tuning range from 2715.4 to 2790.4 nm is also achieved in the Q-switching regime at the repetition rate of 1 kHz. The experimental results demonstrate the huge potential of producing mid-infrared energetic and wavelength tunable short-pulses in an actively Q-switched Er:ZBLAN fiber laser.

Abstract:We report a single-wavelength tunable mode-locked fiber laser. The single wavelength can be tuned from 1537.49 nm to 1608.06 nm by introducing a Sagnac loop filter. As far as we know, this is the widest single-wavelength tuning range achieved in an erbium-doped mode-locked all-fiber laser based on nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). The laser's pulse width changes from 549 fs to 808 fs throughout the tuning process, the maximum average output power is 5.72 mW, and the single-pulse energy is 0.34 nJ at a central wavelength of 1556.53 nm. This laser source can serve as an efficient tool for applications that require a broad tunability range. The combination of femtosecond pulses and extensive wavelength tuning capabilities makes this laser system highly valuable in fields such as fiber optic communications, spectroscopy, sensing, and other applications that benefit from ultrafast and tunable laser sources.

Abstract:An all fiber, wavelength tunable, Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) based on a graphene saturable absorber (SA) and an unbalanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer (UMZI) has been demonstrated. The wavelengths of the Q-switched laser can be accurately tuned over a range of ~35nm by inserting into the cavity an UMZI with a variable optical delay line (OVDL) in one arm, which acts as an optical beam filter into the cavity. The Q-switched pulse duration and the pulse energy have all been characterized. The maximum pulse energy of 36.9nJ was obtained.

Abstract:We report on a long wavelength emitting rare earth doped fiber laser with emission centered at 3.5 {\mu}m and tunable across 450 nm. The longest wavelength emission was 3.78 {\mu}m, which is the longest emission from a fiber laser operating at room temperature. In a simple optical arrangement employing dielectric mirrors for feedback, the laser was capable of emitting 1.45 W of near diffraction limited output power at 3.47 {\mu}m. These emission characteristics compliment the emission from quantum cascade lasers and demonstrate how all infrared dual wavelength pumping can be used to access high lying rare earth ion transitions that have previously relied on visible wavelength pumping.
