Abstract:Electric field modeling of nodular defects is performed to investigate the interaction between defective multilayer coatings and Gaussian profile laser beam. Light intensity is significantly enhanced as large as 6 times within the nodular defects. Different geometries of defects irradiated by laser beams at 0 to 40 deg incident laser angles are analyzed. Nodules with large but shallow seeds, or irradiation of 40 deg p-polarized laser beam, tends to produce the greatest enhancement effect.
Giant Power Enhancement for Quasi-Omnidirectional Light Radiation Via Ε-Near-zero Materials.

Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate a giant power enhancement effect for a line current source in a ε-near-zero (ENZ) two-dimensional (2D) shell with proper physical dimensions. Compared with the traditional high-ε dielectric approach, the ENZ scheme has the prominent advantage that the radiation performance is less sensitive to the outer radius of the shell, which is critically important for real applications where micro-nano fabrications are often involved. The enhancing performance is independent on the position of the source inside the ENZ shell and could be substantially strengthened by incorporating more sources, while the quasi-omnidirectional radiation pattern could be managed to have negligible variance, as evidenced by a particular example with an inner radius of the shell equal to 0.156λ0. Compared with the single source case, two identical sources with a phase difference less than 134° will raise the total radiation power more than 4 folds and the maxima will be about 30 when they are in phase. The field analysis shows that this quasi-isotropic radiation enhancement is mainly contributed by the amplification of the isotropic zeroth order mode radiation while the higher orders with anisotropic emission patterns are effectively suppressed by the specifically designed ENZ shell. In the end, a practicable device employing 4H-silicon carbide (4H-SiC) naturally available with ENZ properties in the mid-infrared regime is numerically proposed, which could provide more than 10 times of radiation enhancement through optimizing the permittivity of the inner dielectric cylinder. These results may find very important applications in the design of novel devices for mid-infrared photon sources or detectors.
Youth Responses to Anti-Smoking Advertisements From Tobacco-Control Agencies, Tobacco Companies, and Pharmaceutical Companies1

Abstract:Emotional reactions to anti-smoking advertising (e.g., fear, sadness, anger) may play an important role in promoting smoking-related attitudinal and behavioral change. Overall, 278 youth completed response ratings of 16 different elements of 50 anti-smoking ads made by tobacco-control agencies, tobacco companies, and pharmaceutical companies. Compared with tobacco-control ads, tobacco-company ads were more likely to elicit positive emotions and less likely to elicit negative emotions and to be of interest to youth. Compared with tobacco-control ads, pharmaceutical company ads were less likely to elicit negative emotional responses or cognitively engage youth and more likely to elicit positive emotions. These findings suggest that youth may be unlikely to respond to tobaccocompany advertising in ways that may lead to a lower likelihood of smoking.
Optical Field Enhancements and Applications by Epsilon-Near-zero Medium with Dielectric Dopant

Abstract:Field enhancement is an interesting and important topic in electromagnetic study. Electromagnetic field concentration and enhancement devices have wide applications in high directional antenna design, laser ignition, optical control, etc. At present, there are usually two ways of implementing the field enhancement, one is to use the artificial electromagnetic materials to realize the radiation direction control and energy concentration, which is more suitable for the applications at microwave or lower frequencies, and the other is to use the materials with high permittivity or high permeability. However, the latter is extremely sensitive to the position and characteristic of the radiation source and the cross-sectional area of the material, and depends heavily on the value of the relative permittivity or the relative permeability of the material. Therefore, both methods cannot fully meet the application requirements of creating high field intensity in optical band, such as laser ignition, etc. In this paper, based on the theory of photonic crystal doping, the strong electromagnetic field enhancement has been successfully realized by epsilon-near-zero medium filled with ordinary dielectric dopant. We first make the comprehensive theoretical analysis of the field enhancement in the structure of epsilon-near-zero medium with dielectric dopant. The method of calculating the central magnetic field in the doped medium is then rigorously derived, and the formula for the ratio of the central magnetic field in the doped medium to the external radiation field is deduced. We find that the optimal magnetic field enhancement occurs only when the proposed structure is equivalent to an epsilon-mu-near-zero medium. Subsequently, under the above condition, various parameters (radius of the cylindrical dopant, number of sources, etc.) are studied to analyze the magnetic field enhancement performance inside the doped medium. The theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed structure can significantly enhance the magnetic field which is applicable in a broad frequency band from microwave to optical region, and meets the application requirements of providing high field intensity. Finally, as a practical realization example, an ultraviolet ignition device working at 270 nm is designed, which presents an efficient and alternative way of developing electromagnetic (optical) devices for producing strong field enhancement.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel hybrid ultrasonic and electromagnetic (UEM) field-assisted laser cladding (LC) is proposed, and the synergistic effect between ultrasonic and electromagnetic fields in the molten pool is investigated. The experimental investigation is conducted on the impact of hybrid UEM fields on the defects (i.e. pores and cracks), surface roughness, microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Inconel 718 coating. It is indicated that hybrid UEM fields effectively reduces the cladding layer defects and flattens the surface of the coating, promotes the columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) and produces the cellular sub-grains inside the existed grains. In addition, hybrid UEM field increases the coating microhardness and improves the wear performance of the coating. Overall, this study shows that the hybrid UEM field has the potential to manufacture practically the metallic component with high quality in the directed energy deposition field.

Abstract:By considering the rapid change of standing-wave electric-field and assuming the interface defect distribution, an improved model is developed to analyze the defect density distribution and assess the damage performance of high-reflective coatings. Two kinds of high-reflective coatings deposited by e-beam evaporation (EBE) and ion beam sputtering (IBS) techniques are analyzed with this method. The lower overall damage threshold is the major feature for the coatings deposited by IBS method according to the defect parameters extracted from the model. Typical damage morphologies of coatings are also measured and analyzed. The assumption of interface defects is supported by the damage behavior. The damage mechanisms of two high-reflective coatings are attributed to the formation of molten pool and mechanical ejection. The influence of the incident angle on the damage probability is also considered and numerically calculated. The defect analysis model improved here is suitable for high-reflective coatings.

Abstract:Subsurface defects (SSD) in optical components pose a significant challenge for enhancing the power density of high-energy laser devices. This study investigated the issue of systematic deviation between the measured and actual depths of subsurface defects when employing optical dark-field confocal microscopy for three-dimensional measurements, which is attributed to refractive index disparities between the sample and the observation environment. This paper introduces geometric and diffraction optical models for correcting errors in the subsurface defect depth, along with a calculation method for determining the correction coefficient. By comparing the experimental data and model simulations, a linear relationship between the measured and actual depths was identified with linearity errors below 2.5% and a minimum of 0.67%. The correction coefficients derived from the optical diffraction model are in good agreement with those obtained experimentally. These findings offer valuable insights for calculating subsurface defect depth correction coefficients across various scenarios and requirements to ensure precise measurements.

Abstract:Nanotextures, being composed of an array of nanostructures, can manipulate the effective refractive index on the interface between air and optical substrates. Various optical properties, such as antireflection, antifogging, self-cleaning, enhanced absorption, have been achieved by nanotextures. Nanotextures have been considered to have great potential in the high-power laser system because of the single-material configuration. Here, we show design and fabrication of nanotextures on fused silica with high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) at the wavelengths 355 nm and 532 nm. The manipulation of light field intensity by nanostructures has been studied. When the average period of nanostructures is less than the 1/3 wavelength, the light field intensity in nanostructures can be lower than that in air. This is the theoretical basis for the high LIDT of fused silica nanotextures. Finally, we study laser induced damage performance of nanotextures. The experimental results show that the LIDT of fused silica can be improved by nanotextures. The LIDT of fused silica substrate was improved form 15J/cm2 to 22J/cm2 at the wavelengths 532 nm. This work promotes an application of nanotextures in high power/energy laser area.

Abstract:The unavoidable surface defects on the practical processed potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals, especially the most common protuberance defects, which are prone to damage under intense laser irradiation, seriously limit the application of KDP optics in laser fusion facilities. In this work, a defect-induced laser damage explosion model that couples the electromagnetic field and stress field was constructed to reproduce the dynamic damage process and reveal the laser-induced damage mechanisms innovatively. First, the near-field optical modulation to incident lasers was considered to describe the effect of structural parameters of surface defects on the optical transmission performance. A multi-physics field coupled failure model was then established for the first time to explore the laser damage mechanism through the dynamic behaviors of laser damage that reproduced by this model. It was proved that the protuberance defects on KDP crystal surface would lead to severe laser damage with the characteristics of large transverse spalling and longitudinal cracks due to the Rayleigh and stress waves, which well agrees with the results of laser damage experiments. The established damage model is capable of revealing the hazards of protuberance defects, and providing effective guidance for the suppression of surface defects introduced in the optical ultra-precision machining processes.

Abstract:Subsurface damage (SSD), having a great impact on the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of ultra-smooth optics applied in high-power laser systems, should be tightly controlled. An improved total internal reflection microscopy (TIRM), combined with digital image processing techniques, is proposed to quantitatively inspect SSD. With the characteristic that there is a relatively small depth of field (DOF) for a microscope at high magnification (50×), a series of SSD images are captured along with the microscope focusing at different depths under the surface by means of micro-focusing control. The definition of each image is calculated through wavelet transformation. By simulation, the relationship between the definition of TIRM images and the depth of the SSD has been established. According to the definition curve, the SSD depth is acquired. Fused silica glasses polished after fine grinding are measured non-destructively by our TIRM setup. The results show that the improved TIRM is a useful method to evaluate SSD. It is helpful to improve the efficiency of optical fabrication.

Abstract:Laser processing has gained wide-spread use in cutting and drilling at micro scales. However, it is difficult for laser processing to make breakthrough of optical diffraction limit. In this article, a method of surface micro-processing based on laser-induced electric field enhancement in the near-field apertureless probe system is introduced. The enhancement was simulated by using a Finite Difference Time Domain-algorithm-based model. Characters of probe materials, probe geometric characters, laser incident angle and distances between the probe and the substrate were studied in order to understand mechanism of the enhancement. A strong correlation between the intensity and the working parameters was observed, which paves the way to optimize experimental conditions and parameters in the manufacturing process. Due to the strongly-enhanced electric field in laser processing, micrometer and nanometer scale processing can be reached.[GRAPHICS](C) 2012 by Astro, Ltd.
Tailoring optical properties of surface charged dielectric nanoparticles based on an effective medium theory.

Abstract:We propose an effective-medium theory (EMT) for the surface charged dielectric nanoparticles (CDNPs) in the long wavelength limit, in which a homogenous CDNP is demonstrated to be equivalent to a conventional absorbing neutral particle of the same size but with different constitutive parameters (effective permittivity epsilon(e) and effective permeability mu(e)). It is found that while the surface charge induces negligible change of magnetic permeability in particle, it gives rise to a significant change of electric permittivity. The change in permittivity depends on the charge, the particle size, and the working frequency but is independent of the constituent material. In infrared frequencies, both the real and imaginary parts of the particle permittivity may be changed considerably by surface charging. At higher frequency, the surface charge can lead to a remarkable decrease in the real part of the permittivity while keeping its imaginary part nearly unchanged. Therefore, based on EMT we can tailor the optical properties of CDNPs by optimizing their parameters, allowing for many exotic phenomena, such as vanishing scattering efficiency, great enhancement of light absorption efficiency, and surface charge induced surface plasmon resonance. Abstract:Abstract The issue of laser-induced damage of transparent dielectric optics has severely limited the development of high-power laser systems. Exploring the transient dynamic behaviors of laser damage on KDP surface by developing multi-physics coupling dynamics model is an important way to reveal the mechanism of nanosecond laser damage. In this work, KDP crystals are taken as an example to explore the mechanism of laser-induced surface damage. Based on the theories of electromagnetic field, heat conduction and fluid dynamics, a multi-physics coupling dynamics model is established for describing the evolution of nanosecond damage processes. The dynamics of laser energy transmission, thermal field distribution and damage morphology during nanosecond laser irradiation are simulated with this model. It is found that the enhancement of light intensity caused by surface defect plays an important role in the initial energy deposition and damage initiation of the laser irradiation area. The evolution of temperature field and crater morphology during subsequent laser irradiation is helpful to understand the laser damage process. The feasibility of this model is verified by the morphology information of typical defect-induced laser damage. This work provides further insights in explaining the laser-induced damage by surface defects on KDP crystals. The model can be also applied to investigate the laser damage mechanisms of other transparent dielectric optics.

Application of light diffraction theory to qualify the downstream light field modulation property of mitigated KDP crystals

Abstract:Micro-milling can effectively remove laser damage sites on a KDP (potassium dihydrogen phosphate) surface and then improve the laser damage resistance of the components. However, the repaired KDP interfaces could cause light propagating turbulence and downstream light intensification with the potential risk to damage downstream optics. In order to analyze the downstream light field modulation caused by Gaussian mitigation pits on KDP crystals, a computational model of the downstream light diffraction based on the angular spectrum theory and the Gaussian repair contour is established. The results show that the phase offset caused by the repaired surface produces a large light field modulation near the rear KDP surface. The modulation generated in the whole downstream light field is greater than that caused by the amplitude change. Therefore, the phase characteristics of the outgoing light could be suggested as a vital research topic for future research on the downstream light field modulation caused by mitigation contours. Significantly, the experimental results on the downstream light intensity distribution have good agreement with the simulation ones, which proves the validity of the established downstream light diffraction model. The phase characterization of the outgoing light is proposed as an evaluation tool in the repair of KDP crystals. The developed analytical method and numerical discrete algorithm could be also applicable in qualifying the repair quality of other optical components applied in high-power laser systems.

Abstract:The chirped pulse amplification technique has enabled the generation of pulses of a few femtosecond duration with peak powers multi-Tera and Peta–Watt in the near infrared. Its implementation to realize even shorter pulse duration, higher energy, and higher repetition rate laser systems relies on overcoming the limitations imposed by laser damage of critical components. In particular, the laser damage of coatings in the amplifiers and in post-compression optics have become a bottleneck. The robustness of optical coatings is typically evaluated numerically through steady-state simulations of electric field enhancement in multilayer stacks. However, this approach cannot capture crucial characteristics of femtosecond laser induced damage (LID), as it only considers the geometry of the multilayer stack and the optical properties of the materials composing the stack. This approach neglects that in the interaction of an ultrashort pulse and the materials there is plasma generation and associated material modifications. Here, we present a numerical approach to estimate the LID threshold of dielectric multilayer coatings based on strong field electronic dynamics. In this dynamic scheme, the electric field propagation, photoionization, impact ionization, and electron heating are incorporated through a finite-difference time-domain algorithm. We applied our method to simulate the LID threshold of bulk fused silica, and of multilayer dielectric mirrors and gratings. The results are then compared with experimental measurements. The salient aspects of our model, such as the implementation of the Keldysh photoionization model, the impact ionization model, the electron collision model for ‘low’-temperature, dense plasma, and the LID threshold criterion for few-cycle pulses are discussed.

Linear laser fast scanning thermography NDT for artificial disbond defects in thermal barrier coatings.

Abstract:Interface disbond in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) is one of the key issues that cause their premature failure. In general, blind hole defects are often used as substitutes in transient thermography. The linear laser fast scanning thermography (LLFST) method was developed in this study and combined with several post-processing algorithms to accurately detect blind hole defects in TBCs. Through numerical simulation and experimental verification, a unique thermal response characteristic of blind holes in the cooling phase, namely a distinct "tailing" phenomenon, was summarized and utilized to recognize small defects. Validation tests indicated that blind holes with diameters of 1, 2, and 3 mm and artificial disbonds with diameters of 2 and 3 mm in TBCs are detected with high efficiency. Abstract:The laser-induced damage on KDP crystal optical surfaces under intense laser irradiation significantly limits the energy outputs of the high-power laser systems in many regions. The energy deposition in the non-heat stage of the laser-induced damage process is regarded as the main energy source, directly determining the laser-induced damage thresholds. It can cause severe damage to the optical surfaces under intense laser irradiation and significantly affect the final damage morphology on the optical surface. Nevertheless, there is still no available model that can well reproduce the behaviors of the plasma in the non-heat stage to reveal the internal physical mechanisms of the non-heat stage currently. Hence, a particle-in-cell (PIC) model is proposed to investigate the behaviors of the plasma in the non-heat stage. Afterward, the feature information of the plasma in the non-heat stage on the KDP crystal optical surface without surface defects under intense laser irradiation has been obtained from three aspects: the electron density, the electron phase-space distribution on the subatomic scale, and the electric field distribution at different times. Then two types of typical damage behaviors of particle ejection and the formation of the damaged craters on optical surfaces under intense laser irradiation are studied based on the developed model. Finally, the plasma behaviors in the processes of particle ejection and the formation of the damaged craters are well reproduced and the internal physical mechanisms of these two types of damage behaviors are obtained. To sum up, this work proposes a PIC model to investigate the plasma behaviors in the non-heat stage. Based on this, this work reveals the energy deposition mechanism of the non-heat stage in the process of the laser-induced damage on KDP crystal optical surfaces under intense laser irradiation and obtains the interaction laws between the intense laser and the plasma. Moreover, this work opens a door for the study on the non-heat stage of the laser-induced damage process on the optical surface from the subatomic scale, which is beneficial to the revelation of the internal physical mechanisms in the non-heat stage and the solution of the laser-induced damage issues in high-power laser systems.

Abstract:In this study, the laser parameters including laser power, scanning rate, scanning line distance, pulse width, frequency, and scanning area were used as the influencing factors, and the temperature, current density, and force impact effect were used as the response indexes to discuss the correlation between laser irradiation and electrochemical deposition (ECD) amorphous-forming process. The results show that in the preparation area ranges of 5 × 5, 10 × 10, and 20 × 20 mm, the laser power, scanning rate, and scanning line distance are the most significant parameters affecting the ECD process performance. The laser power affects the rising range and vibration amplitude of the current density, whereas the scanning rate and line distance influence the rising range, vibration amplitude, and variation period. The current density and force signal change periodically and stably over the suitable processing range. Compared with ECD NiP coating, the comprehensive performance of the coating prepared by the representative parameters selected according to the optimized parameter range are better. This study can provide ideas for the parameter optimization of the laser-enhanced ECD for different materials and processing sizes. In the future work, the influence of laser parameters on the ECD reduction process from a microscopic perspective will be discussed for establishing the correlation between laser parameters and coating performance. Moreover, the periodic current waveform formed by the laser is expected to prepare multilayer gradient structures with alternating grain sizes.

Abstract:The laser spallation technique for measuring the interface strength between a coating and a substrate is similar to laser shock peening, in which the stress wave induced by laser shock cause debond on the interface between a hard coating with micron thickness and a metal substrate. According to the modified experiment setup of the laser spallation technique, finite element analysis simulated the process of the film spallation by taking the laser loading as a direct input. We presented a numerical model of finite element that the laser spallation process includes two related, but uncoupled procedures. One was transient heat transfer in a two-layer medium. The other was the related transient elastic wave propagation in the same two-layer media, which was the result of the thermal misfit by transient heating. Based on the threshold of film spallation, we analyzed the process of laser shocking to study the propagation of stress wave and evaluate the spall resistance of sputtered films. The analysis result showed the dynamic adhesive strength of the interface between the TiN coating and the 304 stainless steel substrate was 193.0 MPa.
Unveiling sub-bandgap energy-level structures on machined optical surfaces based on weak photo-luminescence

Abstract:Sub-bandgap defect energy levels (SDELs) introduced by the point defects located in surface defect areas are considered the main factors in decreasing laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs). The suppression of SDELs could greatly increase LIDTs. However, no available method could detect SDELs, limiting the characterization and suppression of SDELs. Herein, a self-designed photo-luminescence detection system is developed to explore the weak transient-steady photo-luminescence properties of machined surfaces. Based on the excitation laser wavelength dependence of photo-luminescence properties, a sub-bandgap energy-level structure (SELS) containing SDELs is unveiled for the first time. Based on the developed mathematical model for predicting LIDTs, the feasibility of the detection method was verified. In summary, this work provides a novel approach to characterize SDELs on machined surfaces. This work could construct electronic structures and explore the transition behaviors of electrons, which is vital to laser-induced damage. Besides, this work could predict the LIDTs of the machined surfaces based on their PL properties, which provides convenience for evaluating the LIDTs of various optical elements in industrial production. Moreover, this work provides a convenient method for raising the LIDTs of various optical elements through monitoring and suppressing the SDELs on machined surfaces.
