Abstract:Let E be an effect algebra and Es be the set of all sharp elements of E. E is said to be sharply dominating if for each a∈E there exists a smallest element aˆ∈Es such that a⩽aˆ. In 2002, Professors Gudder and Greechie proved that each σ-sequential effect algebra is sharply dominating. In 2005, Professor Gudder presented 25 open problems in [S. Gudder, Int. J. Theory Phys. 44 (2005) 2219], the 3rd problem asked: Is each sequential effect algebra sharply dominating? Now, we construct an example to answer the problem negatively.

Abstract:In this paper, first, we answer affirmatively an open problem which was presented in 2005 by professor Gudder on the sub-sequential effect algebras. That is, we prove that if (E, 0, 1, circle plus, o) is a sequential effect algebra and A is a commutative subset of E, then the sub-sequential effect algebra (A) over bar generated by A is also commutative. Next, we also study the following uniqueness problem: If na = nb = c for some positive integer n >= 2, then under what conditions a = b hold? We prove that if c is a sharp element of E and a vertical bar b, then a = b. We give also two examples to show that neither of the above two conditions can be discarded.

Abstract:A difficult question arising in the study of effect algebras is how to equip them with a fitting and proper topology such that the topology is compatible with the partial operations ⊕ and Θ. As we know, the Frink ideal topology is an important intrinsic topology for studying partially ordered set theory; in particular, it is the correct topology for chains and direct products of a finite number of chains. In this paper, we show that the Frink ideal topology is also a nice topology for studying effect-algebra theory since it provides the operations with some of the expected continuity properties.

Abstract:We describe σ -additive states on effect-tribes by integrals. Effect-tribes are monotone σ -complete effect algebras of functions where operations are defined pointwise. Then we show that every state on an effect algebra is an integral through a Borel regular probability measure. Finally, we show that every σ -convex combination of extremal states on a monotone σ -complete effect algebra is a Jauch–Piron state.

Abstract:It is easy to see that every character (i.e. unital *-homomorphism to the complex numbers) of a commutative unital associative *-algebra is a pure state (i.e. extreme point in the convex set of all normalized positive linear functionals). This article gives sufficient conditions for the converse to be true as well. In order to formulate these results together with similar ones, e.g. for locally convex *-algebras, the notion of an abstract O*-algebra (unital associative *-algebra with an order defined by positive linear functionals) is introduced. Many concepts and intermediary results discussed here also apply to the non-commutative case.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of a quasiresiduated lattice and prove that every lattice effect algebra can be organized into a commutative quasiresiduated lattice with divisibility. Also conversely, every such a lattice can be converted into a lattice effect algebra and every lattice effct algebra can be reconstructed form its assigned quasiresiduated lattice. We apply this method also for lattice pseudoeffect algebras introduced recently by Dvurecenskij and Vetterlein. We show that every good lattice pseudoeffect algebra can be organized into a (possibly non-commutative) quasiresiduated lattice with divisibility and conversely, every such a lattice can be converted into a lattice pseudoeffect algebra. Moreover, also a good lattice pseudoeffect algebra can be reconstructed from the assigned quasiresiduated lattice.

Abstract:We prove that order convergence on a Boolean algebra turns it into a compact convergence space if and only if this Boolean algebra is complete and atomic. We also show that on an Archimedean vector lattice, order intervals are compact with respect to order convergence if and only the vector lattice is complete and atomic. Additionally we provide a direct proof of the fact that uo convergence on an Archimedean vector lattice is induced by a topology if and only if the vector lattice is atomic.

Abstract:We show that separable, simple, unital C*-algebras with finite decomposition rank absorb the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially. This has a number of consequences for Elliott's program to classify nuclear C*-algebras by their K-theory data. In particular, it completes the classification of C*-algebras associated to uniquely ergodic, smooth, minimal dynamical systems by their ordered K-groups.

Abstract:Effect algebras are certain ordered structures that serve as a general framework for studying the algebraic semantics of quantum logic. We study effect algebras which obtain suprema of countable monotone sequences – so-called -effect algebras. This assumption is necessary to capture basic (non-discrete) probabilistic concepts. We establish a free -completion of effect algebras (i.e., a left adjoint to the functor that forgets the existence of -suprema) and the existence of a tensor product in the category of -effect algebras. These results are obtained by means of so-called test spaces. Test spaces form a category that contains effect algebras as a reflective subcategory, but provides more space for constructions.

Abstract:Regular languages - the languages accepted by deterministic finite automata - are known to be precisely the languages recognized by finite monoids. This characterization is the origin of algebraic language theory. In the present paper, we generalize this result to automata with computational effects given by a monad, thereby providing the foundations of an effectful algebraic language theory. Our prime application is a novel algebraic approach to languages computed by probabilistic finite automata, which are shown to coincide with (1) languages recognized by finite monoids via probabilistic monoid morphisms, and (2) languages recognized by convex monoids based on finitely generated convex sets. Further characterizations are derived for nondeterministic probabilistic finite automata, and weighted finite automata over arbitrary semirings.

Abstract:For convex and sequential effect algebras, we study spectrality in the sense of Foulis. We show that under additional conditions (strong archimedeanity, closedness in norm and a certain monotonicity property of the sequential product), such effect algebra is spectral if and only if every maximal commutative subalgebra is monotone $\sigma$-complete. Two previous results on existence of spectral resolutions in this setting are shown to require stronger assumptions.

Abstract:We investigate finite effect algebras and their classification. We show that an effect algebra with $n$ elements has at least $n-2$ and at most $(n-1)(n-2)/2$ nontrivial defined sums. We characterize finite effect algebras with these minimal and maximal number of defined sums. The latter effect algebras are scale effect algebras (i.e., subalgebras of [0,1]), and only those. We prove that there is exactly one scale effect algebra with $n$ elements for every integer $n \geq 2$. We show that a finite effect algebra is quantum effect algebra (i.e. a subeffect algebra of the standard quantum effect algebra) if and only if it has a finite set of order-determining states. Among effect algebras with 2-6 elements, we identify all quantum effect algebras.
