Abstract:We discuss certain homological properties of graded algebras whose trivial modules admit nonpure resolutions. Such algebras include both of Artin-Schelter regular algebras of types (12221) and (13431). Under certain conditions, a module with nonpure resolution is decomposed to form an extension by two modules with pure resolutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a partially defined binary operation on the set S^+(ℋ) of all positive self-adjoint linear operators on a complex Hilbert space ℋ , which makes the set into a generalized effect algebra. Moreover, we present two kinds of partial orders on S^+(ℋ) and give the relationship of the two orders. We study two important topologies on S^+(ℋ) , too.

Abstract:We investigate finite effect algebras and their classification. We show that an effect algebra with $n$ elements has at least $n-2$ and at most $(n-1)(n-2)/2$ nontrivial defined sums. We characterize finite effect algebras with these minimal and maximal number of defined sums. The latter effect algebras are scale effect algebras (i.e., subalgebras of [0,1]), and only those. We prove that there is exactly one scale effect algebra with $n$ elements for every integer $n \geq 2$. We show that a finite effect algebra is quantum effect algebra (i.e. a subeffect algebra of the standard quantum effect algebra) if and only if it has a finite set of order-determining states. Among effect algebras with 2-6 elements, we identify all quantum effect algebras.

Abstract:Let E be an effect algebra and Es be the set of all sharp elements of E. E is said to be sharply dominating if for each a∈E there exists a smallest element aˆ∈Es such that a⩽aˆ. In 2002, Professors Gudder and Greechie proved that each σ-sequential effect algebra is sharply dominating. In 2005, Professor Gudder presented 25 open problems in [S. Gudder, Int. J. Theory Phys. 44 (2005) 2219], the 3rd problem asked: Is each sequential effect algebra sharply dominating? Now, we construct an example to answer the problem negatively.

Abstract:In this paper, first, we answer affirmatively an open problem which was presented in 2005 by professor Gudder on the sub-sequential effect algebras. That is, we prove that if (E, 0, 1, circle plus, o) is a sequential effect algebra and A is a commutative subset of E, then the sub-sequential effect algebra (A) over bar generated by A is also commutative. Next, we also study the following uniqueness problem: If na = nb = c for some positive integer n >= 2, then under what conditions a = b hold? We prove that if c is a sharp element of E and a vertical bar b, then a = b. We give also two examples to show that neither of the above two conditions can be discarded.

Abstract:In this article, we only consider finite effect algebras. We define the concepts of classical and quantum effect algebras and show that an effect algebra $E$ is classical if and only if there exists an observable that measures every effect of $E$. We next consider matrix representations of effect algebras and prove an effect algebra is classical if and only if its matrix representation has precisely one row. We then discuss sum table for effect algebras. Although these are not as concise as matrix representations, they give more immediate information about effect sums which are the basic operations of an effect algebra. We subsequently study states on effect algebras and prove that classical effect algebras are quantum effect algebras. Finally, we consider composites of effect algebras. This allows us to study interacting systems described by effect algebras. We show that two effect algebras are classical if and only if their composite is classical. We point out that scale effect algebras are not the only classical effect algebras and stress the importance of atoms in this work.

Abstract:We first show that the convex effect algebras (CEA) approach to quantum mechanics is more general than the general probabilistic theories approach. We then restrict our attention to finite-dimension CEA's. After an introductory Section~1, we present basic definitions in Section~2. Section~3 studies convex subeffect algebras and observables. In Section~4 we consider strong CEA's and strong observables. We show that a CEA is strong if and only if it is classical. Informationally complete observables on classical CEA's are studied in Section~5. Section~6 considers quantum CEA's in Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:It is easy to see that every character (i.e. unital *-homomorphism to the complex numbers) of a commutative unital associative *-algebra is a pure state (i.e. extreme point in the convex set of all normalized positive linear functionals). This article gives sufficient conditions for the converse to be true as well. In order to formulate these results together with similar ones, e.g. for locally convex *-algebras, the notion of an abstract O*-algebra (unital associative *-algebra with an order defined by positive linear functionals) is introduced. Many concepts and intermediary results discussed here also apply to the non-commutative case.

Finite Algebras with Hom-Sets of Polynomial Size

Abstract:We provide an internal characterization of those finite algebras (i.e., algebraic structures) $\mathbf A$ such that the number of homomorphisms from any finite algebra $\mathbf X$ to $\mathbf A$ is bounded from above by a polynomial in the size of $\mathbf X$. Namely, an algebra $\mathbf A$ has this property if, and only if, no subalgebra of $\mathbf A$ has a nontrivial strongly abelian congruence. We also show that the property can be decided in polynomial time for algebras in finite signatures. Moreover, if $\mathbf A$ is such an algebra, the set of all homomorphisms from $\mathbf X$ to $\mathbf A$ can be computed in polynomial time given $\mathbf X$ as input. As an application of our results to the field of computational complexity, we characterize inherently tractable constraint satisfaction problems over fixed finite structures, i.e., those that are tractable and remain tractable after expanding the fixed structure by arbitrary relations or functions.

Abstract:The aim of our paper is to prove the Triple Representation Theorem, which was established by Jenc ˇa in the setting of complete lattice effect algebras, for a special class of homogeneous effect algebras, namely TRT-effect algebras. This class includes complete lattice effect algebras, sharply dominating Archimedean atomic lattice effect algebras and homogeneous orthocomplete effect algebras.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of "finite general representation type" for a finite-dimensional algebra, a property related to the "dense orbit property" introduced by Chindris-Kinser-Weyman. We use an interplay of geometric, combinatorial, and algebraic methods to produce a family of algebras of wild representation type but finite general representation type. For completeness, we also give a short proof that the only local algebras of discrete general representation type are already of finite representation type. We end with a Brauer-Thrall style conjecture for general representations of algebras.

On $τ$-tilting finiteness of symmetric algebras of polynomial growth

Abstract:In this paper, we report on the $\tau$-tilting finiteness of some classes of finite-dimensional algebras over an algebraically closed field, including symmetric algebras of polynomial growth, $0$-Hecke algebras and $0$-Schur algebras. Consequently, we find that derived equivalence preserves the $\tau$-tilting finiteness over symmetric algebras of polynomial growth, and self-injective cellular algebras of polynomial growth are $\tau$-tilting finite. Furthermore, the representation-finiteness and $\tau$-tilting finiteness over $0$-Hecke algebras and $0$-Schur algebras (with few exceptions) coincide.

Abstract:We introduce and study the weak Glimm property for -algebras, and also a property we shall call (HS ). We show that the properties of being nowhere scattered and residual (HS ) are equivalent for any -algebra. Also, for a -algebra with the weak Glimm property, the properties of being purely infinite and weakly purely infinite are equivalent. It follows that for a -algebra with the weak Glimm property such that the absolute value of every nonzero, square-zero, element is properly infinite, the properties of being (weakly, locally) purely infinite, nowhere scattered, residual (HS ), residual (HS ), and residual (HI) are all equivalent, and are equivalent to the global Glimm property. This gives a partial affirmative answer to the global Glimm problem, as well as certain open questions raised by Kirchberg and Rørdam.

Abstract:For convex and sequential effect algebras, we study spectrality in the sense of Foulis. We show that under additional conditions (strong archimedeanity, closedness in norm and a certain monotonicity property of the sequential product), such effect algebra is spectral if and only if every maximal commutative subalgebra is monotone $\sigma$-complete. Two previous results on existence of spectral resolutions in this setting are shown to require stronger assumptions.

On finite dimensional algebras with trivial derivation (automorphism)

Abstract:This paper deals with $n$ dimensional algebras, over any field, which have only trivial derivation (automorphism). It is shown that the corresponding sets of algebras are not empty and in algebraically closed field case they are dense subsets of the variety of $n$ dimensional algebras with respect to the Zariski topology. An application to the problems of local, $k$-local derivations(automorphisms) of finite dimensional algebras is provided as well.

Abstract:Recently, a new generalized family of infinite-dimensional algebras, each associated with a particular element of a commutative subalgebra of the algebra, was described. This paper provides a comprehensive account of the aforementioned association, accompanied by the requisite proofs and illustrative examples. This approach allows a derivation of Ward identities for selected WLZZ matrix models and the expansion of corresponding -operators in terms of an infinite set of variables .
