Abstract:Nacre, a natural armor, exhibits prominent penetration resistance against predatory attacks. Unraveling its hierarchical toughening mechanisms and damage-tolerance design strategies may provide significant inspiration for the pursuit of high-performance artificial armors. In this work, relationships between the structure and mechanical performance of nacre were investigated. The results show that other than their brick-and-mortar structure, individual nacre tablets significantly contribute to the damage localization of nacre. Affected by intracrystalline organics, the tablets exhibit a unique fracture behavior. The synergistic action of the nanoscale deformation mechanisms increases the energy dissipation efficiency of the tablets and contributes to the preservation of the structural and functional integrity of the shell.

Abstract:Stomal recurrences are diffuse epidermoid carcinomas of the tracheostoma. There is a 8.3% incidence associated with patients having a total laryngectomy. Most can be prevented by several prophylactic measures; however, surgery may be required. The procedure advocated is mediastinal dissection and its surgical technique is outlined. Recently the use of the pectoralis myocutaneous flap has greatly diminished morbidity and mortality associated with this procedure. The complications that may be encountered with mediastinal dissection have been categorized and analyzed. The dynamic interplay of these complications is stressed.

Abstract:Abstract Biological structures integrate morphometry (shape-based rules) with materials design to maximize organism survival. The exoskeleton of the armored fish, Polypterus senegalus , balances flexibility with protection from predatory and territorial threats. Material properties of the exoskeleton are known; however, the geometric design rules underlying its anisotropic flexibility are uncharacterized. Here, we show how scale shape, articulation, and composite architecture produce anisotropic mechanics using bio-inspired, multi-material 3D-printed prototypes. Passive loading (draping) shows that compliant connections between the scales contribute to mechanical anisotropy. Simulated and experimental active loading (bending) show orientation-dependent stiffness ranging over orders of magnitude, including ‘mechanical invisibility’ of the scales where they do not add stiffness to the exoskeleton. The results illustrate how morphometry provides a powerful tool to tune flexibility in composite architectures independent of varying constituent materials composition. We anticipate that introducing morphometric design strategies will enable flexible, protective systems tuned to complex shapes and functions.

Abstract:Many armored fish scale assemblies use geometric heterogeneity of subunits as a design parameter to provide tailored biomechanical flexibility while maintaining protection from external penetrative threats. This study analyzes the spatially varying shape of individual ganoid scales as a structural element in a biological system, the exoskeleton of the armored fish Polypterus senegalus (bichir). X-ray microcomputed tomography is used to generate digital 3D reconstructions of the mineralized scales. Landmark-based geometric morphometrics is used to measure the geometric variation among scales and to define a set of geometric parameters to describe shape variation. A formalism using continuum mechanical strain analysis is developed to quantify the spatial geometry change of the scales and illustrate the mechanisms of shape morphing between scales. Five scale geometry variants are defined (average, anterior, tail, ventral, and pectoral fin) and their functional implications are discussed in terms of the interscale mobility mechanisms that enable flexibility within the exoskeleton. The results suggest that shape variation in materials design, inspired by structural biological materials, can allow for tunable behavior in flexible composites made of segmented scale assemblies to achieve enhanced user mobility, custom fit, and flexibility around joints for a variety of protective applications.
Puncture resistance of the scaled skin from striped bass: Collective mechanisms and inspiration for new flexible armor designs

Abstract:The structure and mechanics of fish scales display unusual and attractive features which could inspire new protective materials and systems. This natural material is therefore attracting attention over the past few years, and recent work demonstrated the remarkable performance of individual fish scales. A puncture event as would occur from a predator's attack however involves more than one scale, and in this article we therefore investigate collective mechanisms occurring within the scaled skin of a fish in the event of a predator's attack. We first demonstrate that in striped bass (Morone saxatilis), the scales increase by four to five times the force required to puncture the skin. We show that individual scales from striped bass provide a remarkable barrier against sharp puncture, regardless of the stiffness of the substrate. The scalation pattern in striped bass is such that three scales overlap at any point on the surface of the fish, which we show effectively multiplies the puncture force by three. We determined that the friction between scales is negligible and therefore it does not contribute to increasing puncture force. Likewise, we found that the local arrangement of the scales had little effect on the puncture performance. Interestingly, because the scales are several orders of magnitude stiffer than the substrate, indenting a few isolated scales results in "sinking" of the scales into the substrate. The high local deflections and strain within the soft tissue may then result in blunt injury before the sharp indenter penetrates the scales. Stereo-imaging and image correlation performed around a puncture site in fish reveal that the surrounding scales collectively contribute to redistributing the puncture force over large volume, limiting local deflections and strains in the soft tissues. The structure and mechanisms of natural fish scales therefore offer an effective protection against several types of threat, and may inspire novel versatile protective systems with attractive flexural properties.

Abstract:Natural dermal armor has superior protective performance and flexibility for effectively protecting flexible objects. Limited by the complex microstructure of natural scales, the scales of common bionic armors are mostly solid flat scales, which will have a certain impact on the quality and protective performance of the armor, and they are not suitable for protecting flexible objects with a curved surface out of consideration for conformality and performance. Based on the Miura pattern with single-degree-of-freedom, this paper designs an arc-scale that can be conformal to the curved surface, and proposes an arc-armor inspired by fish scales. The experiments and numerical simulations have proved that the introduction of the origami structure design can induce a stable failure mode of the arc-scale. The origami-based arc-armor has the advantages of low peak load, long effective stroke, and small fluctuation, which greatly improves the protection performance of the armor. And based on the failure mode of the arc-scale, the second-level structure is proposed to further optimize the energy absorption characteristics of the arc-scale, which contributes to reducing the peak load of the scales under medium- and high-velocity impacts. Under high-velocity impact, the denser the distribution of cells inside the scales, the higher the energy absorption efficiency of the arc-scales, which provides certain guidance for the design and application of the arc-armor. We have obtained an arc-armor with excellent energy absorption characteristics that can be reverse-designed according to the target shape. And such structures can find a wide range application in the protection of flexible electronics, human bodies, and other flexible objects that require light weight and flexibility.

Abstract:Fish skin is a biological material with high flexibility and compliance and can provide good mechanical protection against sharp punctures. This unusual structural function makes fish skin a potential biomimetic design model for flexible, protective, and locomotory systems. In this work, tensile fracture tests, bending tests, and calculation analyses were conducted to study the toughening mechanism of sturgeon fish skin, the bending response of the whole Chinese sturgeon, and the effect of bony plates on the flexural stiffness of the fish body. Morphological observations showed some placoid scales with drag-reduction functions on the skin surface of the Chinese sturgeon. The mechanical tests revealed that the sturgeon fish skin displayed good fracture toughness. Moreover, flexural stiffness decreased gradually from the anterior region to the posterior region of the fish body, which means that the posterior region (near the tail) had higher flexibility. Under large bending deformation, the bony plates had a specific inhibition effect on the bending deformation of the fish body, especially in the posterior region of the fish body. Furthermore, the test results of the dermis-cut samples showed that the sturgeon fish skin had a significant impact on flexural stiffness, and the fish skin could act as an external tendon to promote effective swimming motion.

Abstract:Some biological carapaces in the natural world have distinctive structures and excellent performance in impact resistance and light weight, which can be used to compensate for the shortcomings of traditional protective equipment in terms of wearing flexibility and energy absorption. A bioinspired hierarchical armor is designed in this article based on the inspiration provided by the internal filling layer of the biological carapace. The outer layer of the armor is made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene as the hard front plate, while the soft layer is made of silicone rubber filled with viscous fluid. Impact responses of the fluid filled armors with different soft layers are studied under low velocity impact load. The resistance behavior of the armor with multicell filling layer is analyzed stage by stage using experimental data and images obtained by the high speed camera. The research has found that the armor's synergistic effect of the hard layer, the soft layer and the substrate allows it to absorb enough impact energy and decrease blunt injuries while keeping a certain degree of flexibility in wearing. Furthermore, the fluid filled in the soft layer improves the defect of local excessive intrusion in the previous bioinspired protection studies. The study can provide a reference for the design of new protective equipment.

Abstract:Homarus americanus, known as American lobster, is fully covered by its exoskeleton composed of rigid cuticles and soft membranes. These soft membranes are mainly located at the joints and abdomen to connect the rigid cuticles and greatly contribute to the agility of the lobster in swimming and preying. Herein, we show that the soft membrane from American lobster is a natural hydrogel (90% water) with exceptionally high toughness (up to 24.98 MJ/m<sup>3</sup>) and strength (up to 23.36 MPa), and is very insensitive to cracks. By combining experimental measurements and large-scale computational modeling, we demonstrate that the unique multilayered structure in this membrane, achieved through the ordered arrangement of chitin fibers, plays a crucial role in dissipating energy during rupture and making this membrane tough and damage tolerant. The knowledge learned from the soft membrane of natural lobsters sheds light on designing synthetic soft, yet strong and tough materials for reliable usage under extreme mechanical conditions, including a flexible armor that can provide full-body protection without sacrificing limb mobility. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: A body armor to provide protection to people who are at risk of being hurt is only enabled by using a material that is tough and strong enough to prevent mechanical penetration. However, most modern body armors sacrifice limb protection to gain mobility, simply because none of the existing armor materials are flexible enough and they all inhibit movement of the arms and legs. Herein, we focus on the mechanics and mesoscopic structure of American lobsters' soft membrane and explore how such a natural flexible armor is designed to integrate flexibility and toughness. The knowledge learned from this study is useful to design a flexible armor for full-body protection under extreme mechanical conditions.

Abstract:Flexible protective armors are found in large animals such as fish skins, snake skins, and pangolin scales. For small-sized invertebrates, such armors are paid less attention and overlooked. Chitons, a type of marine mollusk, possess mineralized armors covering the whole dorsal body. The dorsal scales in the girdle tissue are well known, in this study, we reported hidden mineralized scales in the ventral side of chiton Acanthopleura loochooana girdles for the first time. The ventral surface is covered with scales with ca. 40 μm in length, forming continuous but overlapped scales. Additionally, scales are formed from aragonitic spicule-like and square-like scales, embedded in the cuticle layer. Nanoindentation testing results showed that the hardness and elastic modulus of ventral scales were ∼20 % higher compared to those in the dorsal scales, exhibiting good hardness and wear resistance. The combination of the ventral scales and cuticle, along with the regular arrangement of ventral scales, may allow chitons to simultaneously address complex and variable attachment interfaces while also providing wear-resistant protection. This study provides insights for designing protective structures that balance flexibility and durability. Statement of significance Biomineralization is universal in nature and provides protection and support for animals. However, mineralization of dermal skin is not commonly seen. Herein, for the first time, we reported hidden minerals covering the whole ventral side of skin in a small marine animal, chitons. Calcium carbonate minerals are arranged regularly and manifest different morphology in different regions. Additionally, these minerals are embedded in a continuous cuticle layer covering the whole animal. The material also indicates a higher wear-resistant property. This study extends our understanding of the diverse functionality of biominerals and provides a prototype for designing wear-resistant materials.

Abstract:Exoskeletons, such as scales on fishes and snakes were a critical evolutionary adaptation. Honed by millions of years of evolutionary pressures, they are inherently lightweight and yet multifunctional, aiding in protection, locomotion and optical camouflaging. This makes them an attractive candidate for biomimicry to produce high performance multifunctional materials with applications to soft robotics, wearables, energy efficient smart skins and on-demand tunable materials. Canonically speaking, biomimetic samples can be fabricating by partially embedding stiffer plate like segments on softer substrates to create a bi-material system, with overlapping scales. Recent investigations on their mechanics have shown that the origins of many of these behaviors are not merely due to load distribution but because of an intricate interplay of deformation, sliding and interfacial behavior. Such interplay give rise to property combinations that are typically not visible in the parent material of either the scales or the substrates. Here we review and present the origins of some of their fascinating behavior which include nonlinear and directional strain stiffening in both bending and twisting, dual nature of friction which combines both resistance as well as adding stiffness to motion, emergent viscosity in dynamic loading, and non-Hertzian contact mechanics. We will provide derivation of simple mathematical laws that govern structure- property relationships that can help guide design. We will also demonstrate possibilities in non-mechanical properties such as elementary structural coloration and topography influenced mass deposition. We conclude by providing perspectives of future development and challenges.
Tough and deformable glasses with bioinspired cross-ply architectures

Abstract:Glasses are optically transparent, hard materials that have been in sustained demand and usage in architectural windows, optical devices, electronics and solar panels. Despite their outstanding optical qualities and durability, their brittleness and low resistance to impact still limits wider applications. Here we present new laminated glass designs that contain toughening cross-ply architectures inspired from fish scales and arthropod cuticles. This seemingly minor enrichment completely transforms the way laminated glass deforms and fractures, and it turns a traditionally brittle material into a stretchy and tough material with little impact on surface hardness and optical quality. Large ply rotation propagates over large volumes, and localization is delayed in tension, even if a strain softening interlayer is used, in a remarkable mechanism which is generated by the kinematics of the plies and geometrical hardening. Compared to traditional laminated glass which degrades significantly in performance when damaged, our cross-ply architecture glass is damage-tolerant and 50 times tougher in energy terms. Statement of significance: Despite the outstanding optical qualities and durability of glass, its brittleness and low resistance to impact still limits its wider application. Here we present new laminated glass designs that contain toughening cross-ply architectures inspired from fish scales and arthropod cuticles. Enriching laminated designs with crossplies completely transforms the material deforms and fractures, and turns a traditionally brittle material into a stretchy and tough material - with little impact on surface hardness and optical quality. Large ply rotation propagates over large volumes and localization is delayed in tension because of a remarkable and unexpected geometrical hardening effect. Compared to traditional laminated glass which degrades significantly in performance when damaged, our cross-ply architecture glass is damage-tolerant and it is 50 times tougher in energy terms. Our glass-based, transparent material is highly innovative and it is the first of its kind. We believe it will have impact in broad range of applications in construction, coatings, chemical engineering, electronics, photovoltaics.
A Snakeskin-Inspired, Soft-Hinge Kirigami Metamaterial for Self-Adaptive Conformal Electronic Armor

Abstract:A majority of soft-body creatures evolve armor or shells to protect themselves. Similar protection demand is for flexible electronics working in complex environments. Existing works mainly focus on improving the sensing capabilities such as electronic skin (E-skin). Inspired by snakeskin, a novel electronic armor (E-armor) is proposed, which not only possesses mechanical flexibility and electronic functions similar to E-skin, but is also able to protect itself and the underlying soft body from external physical damage. The geometry of the kirigami mechanical metamaterial (Kiri-MM) ensures auxetic stretchability and meanwhile large areal coverage for sufficient protection. Moreover, to suppress the inherent but undesired out-of-plane buckling of conventional Kiri-MMs for conformal applications, soft hinges are used to form a distinct soft (hinges)-rigid (tiles) configuration. Analytical, computational, and experimental studies of the mechanical behaviors of the soft-hinge Kiri-MM E-armor demonstrate the merits of this design, i.e., stretchability, conformability, and protectability, as applied to flexible electronics. Deploying a conductive soft material at the hinges enables facile wiring strategies for large-scale circuit arrays. Functional E-armor systems for controllable display and sensing purposes provide simple examples of a wide spectrum of applications of this concept.

Abstract:Composite bulletproof armor used in modern battlefield environments is mostly composed of ceramic/ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). In order to further improve its bulletproof performance, this study draws on the superposition of fish scales. The upper layer of the flexible protective armor consists of composite scale layers stacked on top of each other, and the lower layer consists of UHMWPE plates with grooved structures at the corresponding locations of the scales, where a single composite scale consists of an upper SiC ceramic layer and a lower UHMWPE layer. Finite element simulation is used to analyze the protective performance of the protective armor. The effects of back plate thickness, scale tilt angle, and impact location on the protection performance are investigated. The results show that the 8 mm thick back plate can effectively resist the impact of Type 53 7.62 mm armor-piercing incendiary ammunition, and the protective effect is best when the scale tilt angle is 30°. The maximum depression depth of the backplane is 12.4 mm, and the deformation of the backplane is reduced by 3 mm when the bullet hits the overlapping area of the scale compared with the central area of the target scale, accounting for 32.67% of the total deformation. The research work has guided the development of new bionic flexible protective armor.

The Armor of the Chinese Sturgeon: A Study of the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of the Ventral Bony Plates

Abstract:Benefiting from their unique morphological characteristics and structural properties, the ventral bony plates of the Chinese sturgeon are excellent biological protective tissue. In this work, we studied the micro- and macro-morphology and mechanical properties of the ventral bony plates of the Chinese sturgeon to elucidate the special protective mechanisms of the bony plates. Experiments involving scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that the bony plates possess a hierarchical structure and a ridge-like shape. This structure comprises a surface layer containing mineralized nanocrystals and an internal layer containing mineralized collagen fibers. From the surface layer to the internal layer, the degree of mineralization decreases gradually. Nanoindentation, tension, and compression tests demonstrated that the bony plates feature excellent mechanical properties and a high specific tensile strength comparable to that of stainless steel. Moreover, water can significantly improve the fracture toughness and deformability of the bony plates and effectively enhance the damage tolerance of the structures. The obtained results concerning the microstructure-property-function relationships of the ventral bony plates of the Chinese sturgeon may provide novel insights for designing protective structures that are both lightweight and high strength.
Effective neoadjuvant therapy prior to metastasectomy: a new paradigm.

Abstract:These two single institution experiences describe the results of using tyrosine kinase inhibitors followed by resection for metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and are great examples of a combined modality approach to a malignancy that attempts to define the biology of the disease. These two centers are defining if and when patients with metastatic GIST should be taken to the operating room for metastasectomy. In the article by DeMatteo et al, they describe the results of 40 patients with metastatic GIST who were treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors and then resected. They found that patients with responsive disease had better progression-free and overall survival than those who had one site of drug resistance or who had multiple sites of drug resistance. They conclude that selected patients with metastatic GIST who have responsive disease or only focal resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy may benefit from surgical resection, whereas those who have multifocal resistance may not. In the article by Gronchi et al, they describe the results of 38 patients with metastatic GIST who were treated with the tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib mesylate and then resected. They found that patients with unresponsive disease did not appear to have any major benefit from surgery and that the progression of disease was more related to acquisition of mutations causing resistance to drug therapy. The patients who responded to therapy and then underwent surgery and recurred seemed to do so because of their discontinuation of therapy rather than acquisition of resistance mutations. First, it must be clearly stated that these studies in no way prove that patients placed on tyrosine kinase inhibitors who have a response derive a benefit from surgery. It can be argued that surgery had no bearing on their longer survival but that they had better biology and were just responsive to the medical therapy. The only way to clearly prove the benefit of surgery in this setting is to perform a randomized clinical trial, and this was pointed out by both sets of authors. What both studies do clearly point out is that patients with tumors that are resistant to therapy are much less likely to benefit from surgical intervention. Traditionally, surgery is effective at controlling localized disease, whereas systemic therapy is used for metastatic disease. There are multiple examples, however, of patients with metastatic disease who are cured with metastasectomy. Colorectal cancer metastatic to the liver is an example of this. The problem, however, is that many of the patients who undergo metastasectomy will recur with disease anyway; and for many patients, the surgical intervention will have no bearing on their longevity. It may even subject them to an unnecessary surgical procedure for which they incur risks, pain, and recovery time with no benefit. In the two studies previously presented, the two sets of authors subdivide patients with metastatic GIST who are potential candidates for metastasectomy into those who may benefit from surgical intervention and those who will likely not. Hopefully, one day we will have molecular therapy that is as effective against other metastatic diseases, such as lung, breast, and pancreas cancer. The paradigm of giving a neoadjuvant approach prior to metastasectomy is now sometimes used with colorectal cancer but not with lung, breast, or pancreas cancer, which in general cannot be cured by metastasectomy. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines for patients with primary colon or rectal cancer with resectable hepatic metastases give the option for systemic chemotherapy prior to resection of the primary and or metastatic disease as they do with GIST (Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology, version 3.2006; available at: http://www.nccn.org. The rationale, of course, in this situation is to quickly, systemically treat patients who are at high risk of systemic micrometastatic disease and also to select out the patients most likely to benefit from surgical intervention and to spare those who already have systemic disease and are unresponsive to chemotherapy. As more effective therapies become available for other metastatic cancers, this paradigm will be more commonly used. These two studies are relative clear on the lack of significant benefit of elective metastasectomy of patients with metastatic GIST who progress on tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy. The real question is: do patients with metastatic GIST who have disease responsive to tyrosine kinase inhibitors benefit from surgery, or are we just picking the patients with the best biology to take to the operating room? This question should be answered with a randomized clinical trial in which subjects with potentially resectable metastatic GIST are recruited and given a defined period of tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy. Resectable subjects with responsive, partially responsive, or stable disease should then be randomized to surgery or no surgery, both with continued medical therapy. The primary endpoints of the trial should be progression-free and overall survival. A further interesting point to study and possible secondary endpoint is whether surgical resection decreases the number of further mutations and whether these patients are more responsive to second-line tyrosine kinase inhibitors once they do progress on imatinib mesylate.
Starfish‐Inspired Cut‐Resistant Hydrogel with Self‐Growing Armor: Where Softness Meets Toughness

Abstract:Inspired by starfish, a hydrogel with self‐growing protective armor is developed by allowing sodium acetate to crystallize on hydrogel surface. The armor effectively prevents cutting and penetration by sharp objects and can self‐repair after damage. Besides, the hydrogel remains soft and durable in outdoor environments and extreme temperatures, demonstrating its potential as a sensor and actuator in harsh environments. Many soft animals like starfish have developed armors to protect their soft bodies in order to survive in harsh environment. Inspired by this fact, special hydrogels with self‐growing protective armors are developed by allowing sodium acetate to crystallize on hydrogel surface. Poly(acrylic acid) chains limit the crystalline region to the surface of the hydrogel by decreasing the pH value and limiting the movement of ions, and then creating a set of tough armor. This armor‐protected hydrogel is able to withstand a high pressure (> 78 MPa) under cutting and prevent the penetration of sharp objects. Interestingly, the unique stimulated‐precipitation mechanism allows the armor to repair itself after damage. Besides, the surface of hydrogel changes from "sticky" to "slippery", which also helps to improve its protective ability. Moreover, the armor helps to retrain water in hydrogel network, and significantly improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels (maximum compressive stress >18 MPa, compressive strain > 90%). In addition, the hydrogel can keep soft and work durably at extreme temperatures (−50 °C and 80 °C) due to the high salt concentration. This study provides an innovative approach for designing armor‐protected hydrogels with great potential in engineering applications such as actuators and sensors for harsh environments.
