Abstract:Abstract Two types of composite armor were designed (Composite armor I alumina ceramic/Kevlar/616 armored steel; Composite armor II alumina ceramic/616 armored steel/Kevlar). Through penetration tests and numerical simulations, the anti-penetration performance and anti-penetration mechanism of the composite armors were studied, and the influences of material arrangement on its anti-penetration performance were discussed. The results show that the established finite element models can reliably simulate the penetration process of composite armors. The failure modes of Kevlar and 616 armored steel in composite armor I are tensile failure and spalling damage, respectively. The failure mode of Kevlar and 616 armored steel in composite armor II is shear failure. The shear failure of 616 armored steel and Kevlar is a low energy consumption damage mode. Therefore, the structure form of composite armor I can give full play to the anti-penetration performance of the material, and the anti-penetration performance is better than that of composite armor I.

Abstract:Composite bulletproof armor used in modern battlefield environments is mostly composed of ceramic/ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). In order to further improve its bulletproof performance, this study draws on the superposition of fish scales. The upper layer of the flexible protective armor consists of composite scale layers stacked on top of each other, and the lower layer consists of UHMWPE plates with grooved structures at the corresponding locations of the scales, where a single composite scale consists of an upper SiC ceramic layer and a lower UHMWPE layer. Finite element simulation is used to analyze the protective performance of the protective armor. The effects of back plate thickness, scale tilt angle, and impact location on the protection performance are investigated. The results show that the 8 mm thick back plate can effectively resist the impact of Type 53 7.62 mm armor-piercing incendiary ammunition, and the protective effect is best when the scale tilt angle is 30°. The maximum depression depth of the backplane is 12.4 mm, and the deformation of the backplane is reduced by 3 mm when the bullet hits the overlapping area of the scale compared with the central area of the target scale, accounting for 32.67% of the total deformation. The research work has guided the development of new bionic flexible protective armor.

Abstract:Some biological carapaces in the natural world have distinctive structures and excellent performance in impact resistance and light weight, which can be used to compensate for the shortcomings of traditional protective equipment in terms of wearing flexibility and energy absorption. A bioinspired hierarchical armor is designed in this article based on the inspiration provided by the internal filling layer of the biological carapace. The outer layer of the armor is made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene as the hard front plate, while the soft layer is made of silicone rubber filled with viscous fluid. Impact responses of the fluid filled armors with different soft layers are studied under low velocity impact load. The resistance behavior of the armor with multicell filling layer is analyzed stage by stage using experimental data and images obtained by the high speed camera. The research has found that the armor's synergistic effect of the hard layer, the soft layer and the substrate allows it to absorb enough impact energy and decrease blunt injuries while keeping a certain degree of flexibility in wearing. Furthermore, the fluid filled in the soft layer improves the defect of local excessive intrusion in the previous bioinspired protection studies. The study can provide a reference for the design of new protective equipment.

Abstract:Abstract Biological structures integrate morphometry (shape-based rules) with materials design to maximize organism survival. The exoskeleton of the armored fish, Polypterus senegalus , balances flexibility with protection from predatory and territorial threats. Material properties of the exoskeleton are known; however, the geometric design rules underlying its anisotropic flexibility are uncharacterized. Here, we show how scale shape, articulation, and composite architecture produce anisotropic mechanics using bio-inspired, multi-material 3D-printed prototypes. Passive loading (draping) shows that compliant connections between the scales contribute to mechanical anisotropy. Simulated and experimental active loading (bending) show orientation-dependent stiffness ranging over orders of magnitude, including ‘mechanical invisibility’ of the scales where they do not add stiffness to the exoskeleton. The results illustrate how morphometry provides a powerful tool to tune flexibility in composite architectures independent of varying constituent materials composition. We anticipate that introducing morphometric design strategies will enable flexible, protective systems tuned to complex shapes and functions.

Abstract:Stomal recurrences are diffuse epidermoid carcinomas of the tracheostoma. There is a 8.3% incidence associated with patients having a total laryngectomy. Most can be prevented by several prophylactic measures; however, surgery may be required. The procedure advocated is mediastinal dissection and its surgical technique is outlined. Recently the use of the pectoralis myocutaneous flap has greatly diminished morbidity and mortality associated with this procedure. The complications that may be encountered with mediastinal dissection have been categorized and analyzed. The dynamic interplay of these complications is stressed.

Flexible arc-armor inspired by origami

Abstract:Natural dermal armor has superior protective performance and flexibility for effectively protecting flexible objects. Limited by the complex microstructure of natural scales, the scales of common bionic armors are mostly solid flat scales, which will have a certain impact on the quality and protective performance of the armor, and they are not suitable for protecting flexible objects with a curved surface out of consideration for conformality and performance. Based on the Miura pattern with single-degree-of-freedom, this paper designs an arc-scale that can be conformal to the curved surface, and proposes an arc-armor inspired by fish scales. The experiments and numerical simulations have proved that the introduction of the origami structure design can induce a stable failure mode of the arc-scale. The origami-based arc-armor has the advantages of low peak load, long effective stroke, and small fluctuation, which greatly improves the protection performance of the armor. And based on the failure mode of the arc-scale, the second-level structure is proposed to further optimize the energy absorption characteristics of the arc-scale, which contributes to reducing the peak load of the scales under medium- and high-velocity impacts. Under high-velocity impact, the denser the distribution of cells inside the scales, the higher the energy absorption efficiency of the arc-scales, which provides certain guidance for the design and application of the arc-armor. We have obtained an arc-armor with excellent energy absorption characteristics that can be reverse-designed according to the target shape. And such structures can find a wide range application in the protection of flexible electronics, human bodies, and other flexible objects that require light weight and flexibility.

Abstract:The advancement of lightweight protective armors holds critical importance for enhancing the maneuverability and combat capabilities of helicopters. Leveraging insights from bionics, it provides a new idea for high-performance armor design. In this study, a new type of composite armor was designed by referring to the structural characteristics of hard phase-protection, soft phase-buffering of unitization armadillo shell. Through the numerical study, the anti-ballistic performance of armor with varying thickness ratios of the dense ceramic layer to the interpenetrating layer is obtained, and the influence of different structures of armor on the anti-ballistic performance is analyzed. The results show that compared with the traditional laminated composite armor, the Al2O3/Al biomimetic composite armor not only improves the separation phenomenon caused by wave impedance mismatch, but also greatly improves the speed drop in resisting high-speed and penetrating bullets. When the thickness ratio is 2:1, the armor has higher ballistic protection performance.
Bio‐Inspired Semi‐Active Safeguarding Design with Enhanced Impact Resistance via Shape Memory Effect

Abstract:Inspired by mimosa closing leaves and cats' righting reflex to reduce impact damage, a novel semi‐active protection strategy to enhance impact resistance through structural adjustment is proposed. Various deformable structures with reinforced anti‐impact abilities are prepared based on thermally‐triggered shape memory polymers. Finally, intelligent clothing with impact protection and thermal insulation is developed. Inspired by creatures reducing impact damage, a novel semi‐active protection strategy to enhance impact resistance through structural adjustment is proposed. The heat‐activated shape memory composites (PCLE) consisting of polycaprolactone (PCL) and shear stiffening elastomer are first prepared. The PCLE with 50 wt.% PCL (PCLE‐50%) presents tensile strength of 0.46 MPa, fracture strain of 148%, high shape fixity and recovery rates (97.9% and 91.1%), and stable shape‐memory repeatability. Furthermore, various PCLE‐50%‐based structures are fabricated, which show reinforced anti‐impact performance after shape‐shifting. Loading from 300 mm, the maximum drop hammer impact force of no protection, PCLE‐50%, and deformed assembled single‐branch structure are 3.98 kN, 1.75 kN, and 0.93 kN, respectively. Additionally, assembled complex structures also exhibit exceptional energy absorption properties. Ultimately, intelligent clothing is successfully manufactured. Besides good anti‐impact effect, the clothing shows excellent thermal insulation capabilities whose surface temperature is 31.7 °C after heating for 600 s at 42 °C. This study provides an innovative means to develop deformable, wearable, and intelligent protective devices.

The Flexible Armor of Chinese Sturgeon: Potential Contribution of Fish Skin on Fracture Toughness and Flexural Response

Abstract:Fish skin is a biological material with high flexibility and compliance and can provide good mechanical protection against sharp punctures. This unusual structural function makes fish skin a potential biomimetic design model for flexible, protective, and locomotory systems. In this work, tensile fracture tests, bending tests, and calculation analyses were conducted to study the toughening mechanism of sturgeon fish skin, the bending response of the whole Chinese sturgeon, and the effect of bony plates on the flexural stiffness of the fish body. Morphological observations showed some placoid scales with drag-reduction functions on the skin surface of the Chinese sturgeon. The mechanical tests revealed that the sturgeon fish skin displayed good fracture toughness. Moreover, flexural stiffness decreased gradually from the anterior region to the posterior region of the fish body, which means that the posterior region (near the tail) had higher flexibility. Under large bending deformation, the bony plates had a specific inhibition effect on the bending deformation of the fish body, especially in the posterior region of the fish body. Furthermore, the test results of the dermis-cut samples showed that the sturgeon fish skin had a significant impact on flexural stiffness, and the fish skin could act as an external tendon to promote effective swimming motion.
A Computational Analysis of the High-velocity Impact Performance of Lightweight 3D Hybrid Composite Armors

Abstract:Basalt and Kevlar materials are high-performance reinforcements used in armor systems. The present work presented that the combination of natural fiber (basalt) with synthetic fiber (Kevlar) and alumina tile composites improves ballistic performance. The partial replacement of basalt encourages the use of natural reinforcement for the development of eco-friendly armor. Continuum damage mechanics (CDM) based modeling is used with a high strain rate and implemented based on Yen's criteria. Cohesive elements are used at inter-layers for modeling the damage evolution. The damage initiation and propagation model is created and implemented as a user-defined subroutine in the ABAQUS finite element (FE) code (VUMAT). Parametric studies are performed by varying the stacking sequence of Kevlar 3D (K3D) and basalt 3D (B3D) layers and the best stacking is used with ceramic (alumina) material. The optimum stacking sequence of composite laminate thickness is investigated to design the light weight body armour and the better results are used to reduce the thickness of the panel, which is the key factor to design any armor panel. Results revealed the panels with basalt composite (B16) impacting with FSP impactor and alumina/Kevlar/basalt composite (C1K7B8) impacting with 9 mm FMJ impactor improved the ballistic performance as compared to H16, K8H8 and K8B8 stacking sequences.

Abstract:The structure and mechanics of fish scales display unusual and attractive features which could inspire new protective materials and systems. This natural material is therefore attracting attention over the past few years, and recent work demonstrated the remarkable performance of individual fish scales. A puncture event as would occur from a predator's attack however involves more than one scale, and in this article we therefore investigate collective mechanisms occurring within the scaled skin of a fish in the event of a predator's attack. We first demonstrate that in striped bass (Morone saxatilis), the scales increase by four to five times the force required to puncture the skin. We show that individual scales from striped bass provide a remarkable barrier against sharp puncture, regardless of the stiffness of the substrate. The scalation pattern in striped bass is such that three scales overlap at any point on the surface of the fish, which we show effectively multiplies the puncture force by three. We determined that the friction between scales is negligible and therefore it does not contribute to increasing puncture force. Likewise, we found that the local arrangement of the scales had little effect on the puncture performance. Interestingly, because the scales are several orders of magnitude stiffer than the substrate, indenting a few isolated scales results in "sinking" of the scales into the substrate. The high local deflections and strain within the soft tissue may then result in blunt injury before the sharp indenter penetrates the scales. Stereo-imaging and image correlation performed around a puncture site in fish reveal that the surrounding scales collectively contribute to redistributing the puncture force over large volume, limiting local deflections and strains in the soft tissues. The structure and mechanisms of natural fish scales therefore offer an effective protection against several types of threat, and may inspire novel versatile protective systems with attractive flexural properties.

Morphometric structural diversity of a natural armor assembly investigated by 2D continuum strain analysis

Abstract:Many armored fish scale assemblies use geometric heterogeneity of subunits as a design parameter to provide tailored biomechanical flexibility while maintaining protection from external penetrative threats. This study analyzes the spatially varying shape of individual ganoid scales as a structural element in a biological system, the exoskeleton of the armored fish Polypterus senegalus (bichir). X-ray microcomputed tomography is used to generate digital 3D reconstructions of the mineralized scales. Landmark-based geometric morphometrics is used to measure the geometric variation among scales and to define a set of geometric parameters to describe shape variation. A formalism using continuum mechanical strain analysis is developed to quantify the spatial geometry change of the scales and illustrate the mechanisms of shape morphing between scales. Five scale geometry variants are defined (average, anterior, tail, ventral, and pectoral fin) and their functional implications are discussed in terms of the interscale mobility mechanisms that enable flexibility within the exoskeleton. The results suggest that shape variation in materials design, inspired by structural biological materials, can allow for tunable behavior in flexible composites made of segmented scale assemblies to achieve enhanced user mobility, custom fit, and flexibility around joints for a variety of protective applications.
Intelligent Safeguarding Leather with Excellent Energy Absorption Via the Toughness-Flexibility Coupling Designation

Abstract:High-performance intelligent body armors with both soft wearability and good energy absorption are increas-ingly required in modern social life. Leather, a breathable, pliable, and tough natural material has extensive applications in the anti-impact field. In this study, a multifunctional Leather/CNT-SSG/PU sandwich structure with high energy absorption and excellent sensing monitoring properties is designed by integrating tough leather and flexible conductive shear stiffening gel (CNT-SSG). The maximum force dissipation capacity of the Leather/ CNT-SSG/PU reaches 84 % in the drop hammer test and the limit penetration velocity up to 142.4 m/s in the ballistic test. Moreover, the Leather/CNT-SSG/PU exhibits excellent stress wave dissipation properties due to the hierarchical structure. By introducing the interdigital electrode array on the non-woven fabric layer, a bullet-proof vest (Leather/CNT-SSG/NWF) with intelligent anti-impact performance and in situ monitoring behavior is successfully achieved. This toughness and flexibility coupling designation provides a novel method for next -generation soft body armor.
Current Research Status of Interface of Ceramic-Metal Laminated Composite Material for Armor Protection

Abstract:A composite material with a laminated structure can be fabricated through layer-by-layer stacking of ceramic and metal in a certain order. It has characteristics of high strength, high hardness, low density of ceramics, and strong ductility of metals; thus, it can be used for bulletproof armor materials. During bullet antipenetration, the ceramic panel is responsible for decelerating and breaking the projectile, and the metal backplate absorbs the kinetic energy of the bullet through plastic deformation, thereby forming a complete bulletproof armor system. However, there are some problems associated with laminated materials, such as the significant difference between the properties of ceramic and metal, weak interface bonding strength, and easy occurrence of tip cracks due to the increase in the internal stress of the impacted material. The ceramic-metal interface easily leads to a sudden change in material properties, and crack propagation and migration affect the properties. After being impacted, cracks first appear in the interlayer, where the interface bonding strength is still unideal, easily leading to a drop between the ceramic panel and metal backplate. In this study, the preparation and observation of interface structure, phase-field simulation of interface fracture, finite element simulation of interface impact resistance, meshless smoothed-particle hydrodynamic method for high-velocity impact and large deformation, and first-principles calculations of interface strength were reviewed. Finally, some suggestions are presented for future development: (1) Strengthening the research of ceramic toughening to enhance the matching degree between the ceramic panel and metal backplate, reducing the sudden change of ceramic to metal performance, and making the performance of ceramic-metal laminated materials more uniform is crucial. In addition, studying metal strengthening is necessary. On the premise of not damaging metal ductility, nano-phases can be added to prepare metal matrix composites for metal strengthening; (2) More multiscale research methods, such as phase-field method, finite element analysis, and first-principles calculations are needed, especially focusing on how to organically and effectively combine these methods. The complementary coupling of multiscale experimental research and computational simulation methods is a powerful tool for the interface design of ceramic-metal laminated materials in the future.
Design and Performance of Layered Heterostructure Composite Material System for Protective Armors

Abstract:A new layered heterostructure composite material system (TC4 as front layer and 2024Al alloy as back layer) was developed and analyzed for its design and performance in terms of an enhanced absorption capability and anti-penetration behavior. The Florence model for energy absorption was modified, so that it can be utilized for the layered heterostructure composite material system with more efficacy. Numerical simulation through Ls-Dyna validated the analytical model findings regarding the energy absorption of the system and both were in good agreement. Results showed that two ductile materials with diverse properties, the hardness gradient and varied layer thickness joined together, specifically behaved like a unified structure and exhibited elastic collision after slight bending, which is possibly due to the decreased yield strength of the front layer and increased yield strength of the second layer. To validate the analytical and numerical findings, the samples of the layered heterostructure composite material system were subjected to a SHPB (Split Hopkinson pressure bar) compression test. The deformation behavior was analyzed in the context of the strain energy density and stain rate sensitivity parameter at different strain rates. The encouraging results proposed that two ductile materials with a hardness gradient can be used as an alternate structure instead of a brittle-ductile combination in a layered structure.

Abstract:An integrated bionic strategy is proposed, and a bioinspired structural composite material with highly efficient cushioning performance is designed on the basis of this strategy. The integrated bionic material, an S‐spider web‐foam, achieves unprecedented cushioning performance. The results of this study may provide new strategies and inspiration for the preparation of high‐performance flexible cushioning materials. Impacts occur everywhere, and they pose a serious threat to human health and production safety. Flexible materials with efficient cushioning and energy absorption are ideal candidates to provide protection from impacts. Despite the high demand, the cushioning capacity of protective materials is still limited. In this study, an integrated bionic strategy is proposed, and a bioinspired structural composite material with highly cushioning performance is developed on the basis of this strategy. The results demonstrated that the integrated bionic material, an S‐spider web‐foam, has excellent energy storage and dissipation as well as cushioning performance. Under impact loading, S‐spider web‐foam can reduce peak impact forces by a factor of 3.5 times better than silicone foam, achieving unprecedented cushioning performance. The results of this study deepen the understanding of flexible cushioning materials and may provide new strategies and inspiration for the preparation of high‐performance flexible cushioning materials.
