Abstract:Recently, the exceptional manoeuvrability and stealth characteristics of manta-like fish have sparked significant interest in the development of bionic underwater vehicles. This study presents a novel kinematic model aimed at overcoming the difficulties associated with the current lack of understanding of the pectoral fin structure and the restricted range of motion of pectoral fins in conventional research approaches. This model intricately integrates a homogeneous coordinate transformation with the spanwise and chordwise motions of pectoral fins to precisely depict the substantial bending deformation characteristics of their movement. To examine the impact of these kinematic properties on the hydrodynamic efficiency, a thorough numerical analysis was conducted using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) on a 3D biomimetic pectoral fin under tethering conditions. The key findings indicated that the propulsion is mainly generated by pressure differences acting on the outer half of the pectoral fin surface. This analysis of pectoral fin hydrodynamics highlights that spanwise motion plays a crucial role in propulsion generation, whereas chordwise motion is essential for efficient propulsion of the pectoral fin. This study provides valuable guidance for the design of a biomimetic pectoral fin, thereby enhancing the applications of bionic cownose ray robots.

Abstract:Abstract Biological structures integrate morphometry (shape-based rules) with materials design to maximize organism survival. The exoskeleton of the armored fish, Polypterus senegalus , balances flexibility with protection from predatory and territorial threats. Material properties of the exoskeleton are known; however, the geometric design rules underlying its anisotropic flexibility are uncharacterized. Here, we show how scale shape, articulation, and composite architecture produce anisotropic mechanics using bio-inspired, multi-material 3D-printed prototypes. Passive loading (draping) shows that compliant connections between the scales contribute to mechanical anisotropy. Simulated and experimental active loading (bending) show orientation-dependent stiffness ranging over orders of magnitude, including ‘mechanical invisibility’ of the scales where they do not add stiffness to the exoskeleton. The results illustrate how morphometry provides a powerful tool to tune flexibility in composite architectures independent of varying constituent materials composition. We anticipate that introducing morphometric design strategies will enable flexible, protective systems tuned to complex shapes and functions.
Morphometric structural diversity of a natural armor assembly investigated by 2D continuum strain analysis

Abstract:Many armored fish scale assemblies use geometric heterogeneity of subunits as a design parameter to provide tailored biomechanical flexibility while maintaining protection from external penetrative threats. This study analyzes the spatially varying shape of individual ganoid scales as a structural element in a biological system, the exoskeleton of the armored fish Polypterus senegalus (bichir). X-ray microcomputed tomography is used to generate digital 3D reconstructions of the mineralized scales. Landmark-based geometric morphometrics is used to measure the geometric variation among scales and to define a set of geometric parameters to describe shape variation. A formalism using continuum mechanical strain analysis is developed to quantify the spatial geometry change of the scales and illustrate the mechanisms of shape morphing between scales. Five scale geometry variants are defined (average, anterior, tail, ventral, and pectoral fin) and their functional implications are discussed in terms of the interscale mobility mechanisms that enable flexibility within the exoskeleton. The results suggest that shape variation in materials design, inspired by structural biological materials, can allow for tunable behavior in flexible composites made of segmented scale assemblies to achieve enhanced user mobility, custom fit, and flexibility around joints for a variety of protective applications.

Abstract:Soft active materials have been widely studied due to their unique attributes of high compliance, various functions and multi physics coupling effects. As a typical soft active material, dielectric elastomer (DE) is promising in various applications, possessing the advantages of large voltage-induced actuation, fast response, lightweight, low cost and high biocompatibility. Utilizing the good performance of large actuation and high compliance, dielectric elastomer is an idea material to drive bio-inspired robot as the artificial muscle. This paper has designed a Manta Ray inspired robotic fish. Utilizing the large actuation of DE membrane, the robot achieves the coupling propulsion of flapping and undulatory motions. The electronics of power and control have been co-fabricated in the body of the robot. The robot achieves good mobility and high environmental adaptability based on its fully soft and transparent structure. The experimental results and design principle of this paper may guide the future design and application of “soft-rigid” co-existed robots and bio-inspired robots.

Abstract:Inspired by the starfish's unique ability to achieve flexibility and posture-holding with minimal energy expenditure, we present a novel bioinspired morphing structure. Our two-component design, consisting of a thermoplastic mesh and elastomeric jacket, effectively mimics the functions of the starfish's ossicles, mutable collagenous tissues, and derma. This structure exhibits a remarkable combination of self-healing, time-dependent shape memory, and self-posture-holding properties. Systematic variations in mesh geometry demonstrate precise control over structural stiffness and thermal response, enabling customization for specific applications. The structure's scalability and ease of fabrication further enhance its adaptability. We experimentally demonstrate the potential of our biomimetic morphing structure using several prototypes. This work lays the foundation for developing a new type of versatile morphing structures with applications in diverse fields, including robotics, biomedical devices, and adaptive structures.

Abstract:Stomal recurrences are diffuse epidermoid carcinomas of the tracheostoma. There is a 8.3% incidence associated with patients having a total laryngectomy. Most can be prevented by several prophylactic measures; however, surgery may be required. The procedure advocated is mediastinal dissection and its surgical technique is outlined. Recently the use of the pectoralis myocutaneous flap has greatly diminished morbidity and mortality associated with this procedure. The complications that may be encountered with mediastinal dissection have been categorized and analyzed. The dynamic interplay of these complications is stressed.
Emergent mechanical properties of biomimetic exoskeletal metamaterials

Abstract:Exoskeletons, such as scales on fishes and snakes were a critical evolutionary adaptation. Honed by millions of years of evolutionary pressures, they are inherently lightweight and yet multifunctional, aiding in protection, locomotion and optical camouflaging. This makes them an attractive candidate for biomimicry to produce high performance multifunctional materials with applications to soft robotics, wearables, energy efficient smart skins and on-demand tunable materials. Canonically speaking, biomimetic samples can be fabricating by partially embedding stiffer plate like segments on softer substrates to create a bi-material system, with overlapping scales. Recent investigations on their mechanics have shown that the origins of many of these behaviors are not merely due to load distribution but because of an intricate interplay of deformation, sliding and interfacial behavior. Such interplay give rise to property combinations that are typically not visible in the parent material of either the scales or the substrates. Here we review and present the origins of some of their fascinating behavior which include nonlinear and directional strain stiffening in both bending and twisting, dual nature of friction which combines both resistance as well as adding stiffness to motion, emergent viscosity in dynamic loading, and non-Hertzian contact mechanics. We will provide derivation of simple mathematical laws that govern structure- property relationships that can help guide design. We will also demonstrate possibilities in non-mechanical properties such as elementary structural coloration and topography influenced mass deposition. We conclude by providing perspectives of future development and challenges.
The Flexible Armor of Chinese Sturgeon: Potential Contribution of Fish Skin on Fracture Toughness and Flexural Response

Abstract:Fish skin is a biological material with high flexibility and compliance and can provide good mechanical protection against sharp punctures. This unusual structural function makes fish skin a potential biomimetic design model for flexible, protective, and locomotory systems. In this work, tensile fracture tests, bending tests, and calculation analyses were conducted to study the toughening mechanism of sturgeon fish skin, the bending response of the whole Chinese sturgeon, and the effect of bony plates on the flexural stiffness of the fish body. Morphological observations showed some placoid scales with drag-reduction functions on the skin surface of the Chinese sturgeon. The mechanical tests revealed that the sturgeon fish skin displayed good fracture toughness. Moreover, flexural stiffness decreased gradually from the anterior region to the posterior region of the fish body, which means that the posterior region (near the tail) had higher flexibility. Under large bending deformation, the bony plates had a specific inhibition effect on the bending deformation of the fish body, especially in the posterior region of the fish body. Furthermore, the test results of the dermis-cut samples showed that the sturgeon fish skin had a significant impact on flexural stiffness, and the fish skin could act as an external tendon to promote effective swimming motion.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND AIMS Hepatocyte growth factor activator (HGFA) is a serum proteinase that specifically converts an inactive single-chain form of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) into an active 2-chain form. HGFA is produced in its precursor form and then activated in injured tissues. To address the precise role of HGFA and to investigate the mechanisms of HGF activation in injured tissues, we generated mice deficient in HGFA. METHODS HGFA-deficient mice were generated using targeted gene disruption. The regenerating process of intestinal mucosa damaged by oral administration of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) or by rectal administration of acetic acid was examined in both HGFA-deficient and control mice. HGF processing activity was analyzed using Western blotting and an HGF activation assay. RESULTS Homozygous mutant mice were viable and fertile without obvious abnormalities. When mice were treated with 3% DSS in drinking water for 6 days followed by distilled water without DSS, 72% of HGFA-deficient mice died through day 12 while 75% of control mice survived injury. Similar results were also observed in the acetic acid-induced intestinal injury; the survival rate was 36.6% in HGFA-deficient mice and 84.2% in control mice. In HGFA-deficient mice, the injured mucosa was not sufficiently covered by regenerated epithelium and the activation of HGF was impaired in the injured colon. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that HGFA is required for repair of injured intestinal mucosa but is not essential for normal development during embryogenesis or after birth.

Abstract:The exoskeleton of the Homarus americanus lobster was found to exhibit hybridization helicoidal structural features through electron microscopy. Unlike the uniform helicoidal structure previously studied, the inner and outer cuticles showed significant variations in stacking height and pitch angle. The present study marks the first successful attempt at imitating composite laminates with hybrid helicoidal microstructures using ultra-thin ply. The experimental results showed that the hybrid helicoidal structure demonstrated better head-on combat capability and provided superior protection to internal tissues and organs compared to the uniform helicoidal structure. This was attributed to its higher carrying capacity and larger prolonged residual loading rate. Furthermore, the use of ultra-thin prepreg provides ample design space for bionic helicoidal design and preparation of composite materials. These findings suggest that hybrid helical microstructure may have potential applications in areas where bend/shear damage resistance is critical, such as in protective equipment for athletes or military personnel. The study highlights the importance of exploring natural structures and their mechanical properties for developing novel composite materials with superior performance.

Abstract:The study of bio-inspired structures and their reproduction has always fascinated humans. The advent of soft robotics, thanks to soft materials, has enabled considerable progress in this field. Over the years, polyps, worms, cockroaches, jellyfish, and multiple anthropomorphic structures such as hands or limbs have been reproduced. These structures have often been used for gripping and handling delicate objects or those with complex unknown a priori shapes. Several studies have also been conducted on grippers inspired by the seahorse tail. In this paper, a novel biomimetic soft pneumatic actuator inspired by the tail of the seahorse Hippocampus reidi is presented. The actuator has been developed to make a leg to sustain a multi-legged robot. The prototyping of the actuator was possible by combining a 3D-printed reinforcement in thermoplastic polyurethane, mimicking the skeletal apparatus, within a silicone rubber structure, replicating the functions of the external epithelial tissue. The latter has an internal channel for pneumatic actuation that acts as the inner muscle. The study on the anatomy and kinematic behaviour of the seahorse tail suggested the mechanical design of the actuator. Through a test campaign, the actuator prototype was characterized by isotonic tests with an external null load, isometric tests, and activation/deactivation times. Specifically, the full actuator distension of 154.5 mm occurs at 1.8 bar, exerting a maximum force of 11.9 N, with an activation and deactivation time of 74.9 and 94.5 ms, respectively.

Abstract:We synthesize geometrically tailorable anisotropic plates by combining button shaped fish-scale like features on soft substrates, then lacing them with high-stiffness strings. This creates a new type of biomimetic architectured structure with multiple broken symmetries. First, the tendons and scales together break the symmetry of the bending response between the concave and convex curvature. Next, the weave pattern of the tendons further breaks symmetry along the two directors of plates. The anisotropy is clearly evident in 3-point bending experiments. Motivated by these experiments and the need for design, we formulate the analytical energy-based model to quantify the anisotropic elasticity and tailorable Poisson's ratio. The derived architecture-property relationships can be used to design architected tendon plates with desirable properties.

Abstract:The hinge of bivalve shells can sustain hundreds of thousands of repeating opening-and-closing valve motions throughout their lifetime. We studied the hierarchical design of the mineralized tissue in the hinge of the bivalve Cristaria plicata, which endows the tissue with deformability and fatigue resistance and consequently underlies the repeating motion capability. This folding fan-shaped tissue consists of radially aligned, brittle aragonite nanowires embedded in a resilient matrix and can translate external radial loads to circumferential deformation. The hard-soft complex microstructure can suppress stress concentration within the tissue. Coherent nanotwin boundaries along the longitudinal direction of the nanowires increase their resistance to bending fracture. The unusual biomineral, which exploits the inherent properties of each component through multiscale structural design, provides insights into the evolution of antifatigue structural materials.

Abstract:Biological organisms such as the octopus can reconfigure their shape and properties to perform diverse tasks. However, soft machines struggle to achieve complex configurations, morph into shape to support loads, and go between multiple states reversibly. Here, we introduce a multifunctional shape-morphing material with reversible and rapid polymorphic reconfigurability. We couple elastomeric kirigami with an unconventional reversible plasticity mechanism in metal alloys to rapidly ( < 0.1 seconds) morph flat sheets into complex, load-bearing shapes, with reversibility and self-healing through phase change. This kirigami composite overcomes trade-offs in deformability and load-bearing capacity and eliminates power requirements to sustain reconfigured shapes. We demonstrate this material through integration with onboard control, motors, and power to create a soft robotic morphing drone, which autonomously transforms from a ground to air vehicle and an underwater morphing machine, which can be reversibly deployed to collect cargo.

Abstract:Hedgehog spines with evolved unique structures are studied on account of their remarkable mechanical efficiency. However, because of limitations of existing knowledge, it remains unclear how spines work as a material with a balance of stiffness and toughness. By combining qualitative three-dimensional (3D) structural characterization, material composition analysis, biomechanical analysis, and parametric simulations, the relationship between microstructural characteristic and multifunctional features of hedgehog spines is revealed here. The result shows that the fibers transform from the outer cortex to the interior cellular structures by the “T” section composed of the “L” section and a deltoid. The outer cortex, however, shows an arrangement of a layered fibrous structure. An inward change in Young's moduli is observed. In addition, these spines are featured with a sandwich structure that combines an inner porous core with an outer dense cortex. This feature confirms that the hedgehog spines are a kind of biological functionally graded fiber-reinforced composite. Biomimetic models based on the spine are then built, and the corresponding mechanical performance is tested. The results confirm that the internal cellular structure of the spine effectively improve impact resistance. Furthermore, the transverse diaphragm can prevent ellipticity, which may delay buckling. The longitudinal stiffeners also contribute to promote buckling resistance. The design strategies of the spine proposed here provide inspirations for designing T-joint composites. It also exhibits potential applications in low-density, impact and buckling resistance artificial composites.Statement of significanceThe spines of a hedgehog are its protective armor that combines strength and toughness. The animal can not only withstand longitudinal and radial forces that are 1 × 106∼ 3 × 106 times the gravity generated by its own weight, but it can also survive unscathed by elastic buckling while dropping to the ground at a speed of up to 15 m/s. Here, we first demonstrate that hedgehog spines are biological graded fiber-reinforced structural composites and reveal their superior impact and buckling resistance mechanism through simulation analysis. Our results broaden the understanding of the relationship among morphology, materials, and function of hedgehog spines. It is anticipated that the survival strategies of hedgehog revealed here could provide inspirations for the development of synthetic composites with impact resistance and structural stability.

Abstract:Lightweight porous materials with high load-bearing, damage tolerance and energy absorption as well as intelligence of shape recovery after material deformation are beneficial and critical for many applications, e.g., aerospace, automobiles, electronics, etc. Cuttlebone produced in the cuttlefish has evolved vertical walls with the optimal corrugation gradient, enabling stress homogenization, significant load bearing, and damage tolerance to protect the organism from high external pressures in the deep sea. This work illustrated that the complex hybrid wave shape in cuttlebone walls, becoming more tortuous from bottom to top, creates a lightweight, load-bearing structure with progressive failure. By mimicking the cuttlebone, a novel bionic hybrid structure (BHS) was proposed, and as a comparison, a regular corrugated structure (RCS) and a straight wall structure (SWS) were designed. Three types of designed structures have been successfully manufactured by laser powder bed fusion with NiTi powder. The LPBF-processed BHS exhibited a total porosity of 0.042% and a good dimensional accuracy with a peak deviation of 17.4 μm. Microstructural analysis indicated that the LPBF-processed BHS had a strong (001) crystallographic orientation and an average size of 9.85 μm. Mechanical analysis revealed the LPBF-processed BHS could withstand over 25 000 times its weight without significant deformation and had the highest specific energy absorption value (5.32 J/g) due to the absence of stress concentration and progressive wall failure during compression. Cyclic compression testing showed that LPBF-processed BHS possessed superior viscoelastic and elasticity energy dissipation capacity. Importantly, the uniform reversible phase transition from martensite to austenite in the walls enables the structure to largely recover its pre-deformation shape when heated (over 99% recovery rate). These design strategies can serve as valuable references for the development of intelligent components that possess high mechanical efficiency and shape memory capabilities.

Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing

Abstract:A group of researchers and practitioners interested in advancing knowledge utilization met as a colloquium in Belfast (KU 11) and used a "world café" approach to exploit the social capital and shared understanding built up over previous events to consider the research and practice agenda. We considered three key areas of relevance to knowledge use: (1) understanding the nature of research use, influence and impact; (2) blended and collaborative approaches to knowledge production and use; and (3) supporting sustainability and spread of evidence-informed innovations. The approach enabled the development of artifacts that reflected the three areas and these were analyzed using a creative hermeneutic approach. The themes that emerged and which are outlined in this commentary are not mutually exclusive. There was much overlap in the discussions and therefore of the themes, reflecting the complex nature of knowledge translation work. The agenda that has emerged from KU 11 also reflects the participatory and creative approach in which the meeting was structured and focused, and therefore emphasizes the processual, relational and contingent nature of some of the challenges we face. The past 20 years has seen an explosion in activity around understanding KU, and we have learned much about the difficulties. Whilst the agenda for the next decade may be becoming clearer, colloquia such as KU 11, using creative and engaging approaches, have a key role to play in dissecting, articulating and sharing that agenda. In this way, we also build an ever-expanding international community that is dedicated to working towards increasing the chances of success for better patient care.
