Abstract:Abstract Biological structures integrate morphometry (shape-based rules) with materials design to maximize organism survival. The exoskeleton of the armored fish, Polypterus senegalus , balances flexibility with protection from predatory and territorial threats. Material properties of the exoskeleton are known; however, the geometric design rules underlying its anisotropic flexibility are uncharacterized. Here, we show how scale shape, articulation, and composite architecture produce anisotropic mechanics using bio-inspired, multi-material 3D-printed prototypes. Passive loading (draping) shows that compliant connections between the scales contribute to mechanical anisotropy. Simulated and experimental active loading (bending) show orientation-dependent stiffness ranging over orders of magnitude, including ‘mechanical invisibility’ of the scales where they do not add stiffness to the exoskeleton. The results illustrate how morphometry provides a powerful tool to tune flexibility in composite architectures independent of varying constituent materials composition. We anticipate that introducing morphometric design strategies will enable flexible, protective systems tuned to complex shapes and functions.
Morphometric structural diversity of a natural armor assembly investigated by 2D continuum strain analysis

Abstract:Many armored fish scale assemblies use geometric heterogeneity of subunits as a design parameter to provide tailored biomechanical flexibility while maintaining protection from external penetrative threats. This study analyzes the spatially varying shape of individual ganoid scales as a structural element in a biological system, the exoskeleton of the armored fish Polypterus senegalus (bichir). X-ray microcomputed tomography is used to generate digital 3D reconstructions of the mineralized scales. Landmark-based geometric morphometrics is used to measure the geometric variation among scales and to define a set of geometric parameters to describe shape variation. A formalism using continuum mechanical strain analysis is developed to quantify the spatial geometry change of the scales and illustrate the mechanisms of shape morphing between scales. Five scale geometry variants are defined (average, anterior, tail, ventral, and pectoral fin) and their functional implications are discussed in terms of the interscale mobility mechanisms that enable flexibility within the exoskeleton. The results suggest that shape variation in materials design, inspired by structural biological materials, can allow for tunable behavior in flexible composites made of segmented scale assemblies to achieve enhanced user mobility, custom fit, and flexibility around joints for a variety of protective applications.
Emergent mechanical properties of biomimetic exoskeletal metamaterials

Abstract:Exoskeletons, such as scales on fishes and snakes were a critical evolutionary adaptation. Honed by millions of years of evolutionary pressures, they are inherently lightweight and yet multifunctional, aiding in protection, locomotion and optical camouflaging. This makes them an attractive candidate for biomimicry to produce high performance multifunctional materials with applications to soft robotics, wearables, energy efficient smart skins and on-demand tunable materials. Canonically speaking, biomimetic samples can be fabricating by partially embedding stiffer plate like segments on softer substrates to create a bi-material system, with overlapping scales. Recent investigations on their mechanics have shown that the origins of many of these behaviors are not merely due to load distribution but because of an intricate interplay of deformation, sliding and interfacial behavior. Such interplay give rise to property combinations that are typically not visible in the parent material of either the scales or the substrates. Here we review and present the origins of some of their fascinating behavior which include nonlinear and directional strain stiffening in both bending and twisting, dual nature of friction which combines both resistance as well as adding stiffness to motion, emergent viscosity in dynamic loading, and non-Hertzian contact mechanics. We will provide derivation of simple mathematical laws that govern structure- property relationships that can help guide design. We will also demonstrate possibilities in non-mechanical properties such as elementary structural coloration and topography influenced mass deposition. We conclude by providing perspectives of future development and challenges.

Abstract:Natural fish scales demonstrate outstanding mechanical efficiency owing to their elaborate architectures and thereby may serve as ideal prototypes for the architectural design of man-made materials. Here bioinspired magnesium composites with fish-scale-like orthogonal plywood and double-Bouligand architectures were developed by pressureless infiltration of a magnesium melt into the woven contextures of continuous titanium fibers. The composites exhibit enhanced strength and work-hardening ability compared to those estimated from a simple mixture of their constituents at ambient to elevated temperatures. In particular, the double-Bouligand architecture can effectively deflect cracking paths, alleviate strain localization, and adaptively reorient titanium fibers within the magnesium matrix during the deformation of the composite, representing a successful implementation of the property-optimizing mechanisms in fish scales. The strength of the composites, specifically the effect of their bioinspired architectures, was interpreted based on the adaptation of classical laminate theory. Abstract:BACKGROUND AND AIMS Hepatocyte growth factor activator (HGFA) is a serum proteinase that specifically converts an inactive single-chain form of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) into an active 2-chain form. HGFA is produced in its precursor form and then activated in injured tissues. To address the precise role of HGFA and to investigate the mechanisms of HGF activation in injured tissues, we generated mice deficient in HGFA. METHODS HGFA-deficient mice were generated using targeted gene disruption. The regenerating process of intestinal mucosa damaged by oral administration of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) or by rectal administration of acetic acid was examined in both HGFA-deficient and control mice. HGF processing activity was analyzed using Western blotting and an HGF activation assay. RESULTS Homozygous mutant mice were viable and fertile without obvious abnormalities. When mice were treated with 3% DSS in drinking water for 6 days followed by distilled water without DSS, 72% of HGFA-deficient mice died through day 12 while 75% of control mice survived injury. Similar results were also observed in the acetic acid-induced intestinal injury; the survival rate was 36.6% in HGFA-deficient mice and 84.2% in control mice. In HGFA-deficient mice, the injured mucosa was not sufficiently covered by regenerated epithelium and the activation of HGF was impaired in the injured colon. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that HGFA is required for repair of injured intestinal mucosa but is not essential for normal development during embryogenesis or after birth.
Elasmoid fish scales as a natural fibre composite: microscopic heterogeneities in structure, mineral distribution, and mechanical properties

Abstract:The elasmoid scales in teleost fish serve as exemplary models for natural fibre composites with integrated flexibility and protection. Yet, limited research has been focused on the potential structural, chemical, and mechanical heterogeneity within individual scales. This study presents systematic characterizations of the elasmoid scales from black drum fish ( Pogonias cromis ) at different zones within individual scales as a natural fibre composite, focusing on the microscopic structural heterogeneities and corresponding mechanical effects. The focus field at the centre of the scales exhibits a classical tri-layered collagen-based composite design, consisting of the mineralized outermost limiting layer, external elasmodine layer in the middle, and the unmineralized internal elasmodine layer. In comparison, the rostral field at the anterior end of the scales exhibits a two-layered design: the mineralized outermost limiting layer exhibits radii sections on the outer surface, and the inner elasmodine layer consists of collagen fibre-based sublayers with alternating mineralization levels. Chemical and nanoindentation analysis suggests a close correlation between the mineralization levels and the local nanomechanical properties. Comparative finite element modelling shows that the rostral-field scales achieve increased flexibility under both concave and convex bending. Moreover, the evolving geometries of isolated Mandle’s corpuscles in the internal elasmodine layer, transitioning from irregular shapes to faceted octahedrons, suggest the mechanisms of mineral growth and space-filling to thicken the mineralized layers in scales during growth, which enhances the bonding strength between the adjacent collagen fibre layers. This work offers new insights into the structural variations in individual elasmoid scales, providing strategies for bioinspired fibre composite designs with local-adapted functional requirements.

Abstract:The rise in structural performance requirements in engineering is driving the research and development of stronger, stiffer, and lighter materials. However, most traditional artificial materials are unable to meet the needs of modern industrial and technological development. In fact, multifarious creatures in nature are further ahead in their use of structural materials. There is a fairly limited selection of natural structural materials at ambient temperatures. They usually consist of hard and soft phases arranged in a complex hierarchy with characteristic dimensions ranging from nanoscale to macroscale. The resulting materials usually show a nearly perfect combination of strength and toughness integrated with lightweight characteristics. This is exactly what is required of engineering materials. In this review, different biological materials were divided into the following types in terms of structural elements: 1D fibrous structures, 2D layered structures, 3D cellular structures and heterogeneous interface structures. For each structural element, corresponding structure components and mechanical properties of typical organisms were well described. Abundant sophisticated models of natural biological structures were discussed contrastively. The purpose of this review was to summarize the excellent properties of multi-dimensional biological models with cross-scale features and to reveal the relationship between structure characteristics and function mechanism, which could provide valuable references for the design and optimization of a future biomimetic composite with high mechanical performance. This review is anticipated to not only inspire novel biomimetic design but also offer a window for the deep understanding of existing outstanding structural composites in diversified species, which could provide continuous innovative power for composite renovation in many engineering fields.

Abstract:State-of-the-art morphing materials are either very compliant to achieve large shape changes (flexible metamaterials, compliant mechanisms, hydrogels), or very stiff but with infinitesimal changes in shape that require large actuation forces (metallic or composite panels with piezoelectric actuation). Morphing efficiency and structural stiffness are therefore mutually exclusive properties in current engineering morphing materials, which limits the range of their applicability. Interestingly, natural fish fins do not contain muscles, yet they can morph to large amplitudes with minimal muscular actuation forces from the base while producing large hydrodynamic forces without collapsing. This sophisticated mechanical response has already inspired several synthetic fin rays with various applications. However, most "synthetic" fin rays have only considered uniform properties and structures along the rays while in natural fin rays, gradients of properties are prominent. In this study, we designed, modeled, fabricated and tested synthetic fin rays with bioinspired gradients of properties. The rays were composed of two hemitrichs made of a stiff polymer, joined by a much softer core region made of elastomeric ligaments. Using combinations of experiments and nonlinear mechanical models, we found that gradients in both the core region and hemitrichs can increase the morphing and stiffening response of individual rays. Introducing a positive gradient of ligament density in the core region (the density of ligament increases towards the tip of the ray) decreased the actuation force required for morphing and increased overall flexural stiffness. Introducing a gradient of property in the hemitrichs, by tapering them, produced morphing deformations that were distributed over long distances along the length of the ray. These new insights on the interplay between material architecture and properties in nonlinear regimes of deformation can improve the designs of morphing structures that combine high morphing efficiency and high stiffness from external forces, with potential applications in aerospace or robotics.

Abstract:Abstract It has been researched that the surface structure of many organisms has unique resistance reduction properties and it is important to replicate the morphological features of the biological body surface on the material surface. So, a method for creating a biomimetic fish-scale surface using a laser is proposed by observing the laminar arrangement features of three common fish scales on the body surface, and a composite structure of bionic fish scale macrostructure and different microstructures of bionic fish scale were machined on on aluminium alloy surfaces. The surface morphology and elemental composition were characterized before the resistance reduction test. The results indicate that both the biomimetic fish-scale macrostructure and composite structure have an obvious effect of reduced drag, among which, maximum resistance reduction can be achieved 44.02% at a flow rate of 0.6 m/s for the bionic carp fish scale composite structure.
CarbonFish -- A Bistable Underactuated Compliant Fish Robot capable of High Frequency Undulation

Abstract:The Hair Clip Mechanism HCM represents an innovative in plane prestressed bistable mechanism, as delineated in our preceding studies, devised to augment the functional prowess of soft robotics. When juxtaposed with conventional soft and compliant robotic systems, HCMs exhibit pronounced rigidity, augmented mobility, reproducible repeatability, and an effective design and fabrication paradigm. In this research, we investigate the feasibility of utilizing carbon fiber reinforced plastic CFRP as the foundational material for an HCM based fish robot, herein referred to as CarbonFish. Our objective centers on realizing high frequency undulatory motion, thereby laying the groundwork for accelerated aquatic locomotion in subsequent models. We proffer an exhaustive design and fabrication schema underpinned by mathematical principles. Preliminary evaluations of our single actuated CarbonFish have evidenced an undulation frequency approaching 10 Hz, suggesting its potential to outperform other biologically inspired aquatic entities as well as real fish.

Abstract:Biological organisms often have remarkable multifunctionality through intricate structures, such as concurrent shape morphing and stiffness variation in the octopus. Soft robots, which are inspired by natural creatures, usually require the integration of separate modules to achieve these various functions. As a result, the whole structure is cumbersome, and the control system is complex, often involving multiple control loops to finish a required task. Here, inspired by the scales that cover creatures like pangolins and fish, we developed a robotic structure that can vary its stiffness and change shape simultaneously in a highly integrated, compact body. The scale-inspired layered structure (SAILS) was enabled by the inversely designed programmable surface patterns of the scales. After fabrication, SAILS was inherently soft and flexible. When sealed in an elastic envelope and subjected to negative confining pressure, it transitioned to its designated shape and concurrently became stiff. SAILS could be actuated at frequencies as high as 5 hertz and achieved an apparent bending modulus change of up to 53 times between its soft and stiff states. We further demonstrated both the versatility of SAILS by developing a soft robot that is amphibious and adaptive and tunable landing systems for drones with the capacity to accommodate different loads.

Abstract:At present, single-fin propulsion modes, such as pectoral fins and caudal fins, cannot ensure the mobility and forward speed of bionic robotic fish, whereas a multi-fin and flexible body can better ensure a high propulsion efficiency – particularly with low-speed mobility and high-speed stability. Therefore, the cooperative propulsion mode of the pectoral fin and caudal fin has become a research hotspot in recent years. This paper systematically introduces various actuators of robotic fish, including traditional actuators and functional materials. The functional materials include shape-memory alloy wires, ionic polymer–metal composites and piezoelectric ceramics, and their performance characteristics and limitations are discussed. Functional materials can reduce the volume and weight of a robot and reduce noise. Underwater robots have the advantages of flexibility and the ability to perform complex motions. Therefore, flexible robotic fish that combine the flexible behaviour of real fish with robot technology are gradually emerging. Finally, future research directions for bionic robotic fish are presented.

Abstract:Existing models for the morphing concept of fish bone active camber (FishBAC) rely on several simplifying assumptions, hindering the accurate evaluation of its static and dynamic response. This study proposes a general framework according to which the theory of shallow shells and the Rayleigh–Ritz method are combined with artificial springs to present a basis for the dynamic evaluation of FishBAC, focusing on the free-vibration behavior as a first step for such objectives. A comprehensive code, which considers any desired boundary conditions, is written in Wolfram Mathematica to obtain the frequency parameter. After establishing the validity of the formulation through a set of comparisons with other articles and methods, a few FishBACs based on NACA 4412 are examined. Partitioning the structure and using the dimensions of these sections as the input yield accurate results compared to the finite element findings in COMSOL Multiphysics in an eigenfrequency analysis. The findings also show the notable error of neglecting the existence of curvature in the mean camber line of the trailing edges of airfoils or the span of wings based on FishBAC.

Abstract:The structure and mechanics of fish scales display unusual and attractive features which could inspire new protective materials and systems. This natural material is therefore attracting attention over the past few years, and recent work demonstrated the remarkable performance of individual fish scales. A puncture event as would occur from a predator's attack however involves more than one scale, and in this article we therefore investigate collective mechanisms occurring within the scaled skin of a fish in the event of a predator's attack. We first demonstrate that in striped bass (Morone saxatilis), the scales increase by four to five times the force required to puncture the skin. We show that individual scales from striped bass provide a remarkable barrier against sharp puncture, regardless of the stiffness of the substrate. The scalation pattern in striped bass is such that three scales overlap at any point on the surface of the fish, which we show effectively multiplies the puncture force by three. We determined that the friction between scales is negligible and therefore it does not contribute to increasing puncture force. Likewise, we found that the local arrangement of the scales had little effect on the puncture performance. Interestingly, because the scales are several orders of magnitude stiffer than the substrate, indenting a few isolated scales results in "sinking" of the scales into the substrate. The high local deflections and strain within the soft tissue may then result in blunt injury before the sharp indenter penetrates the scales. Stereo-imaging and image correlation performed around a puncture site in fish reveal that the surrounding scales collectively contribute to redistributing the puncture force over large volume, limiting local deflections and strains in the soft tissues. The structure and mechanisms of natural fish scales therefore offer an effective protection against several types of threat, and may inspire novel versatile protective systems with attractive flexural properties.

A starfish-inspired 4D self-healing morphing structure

Abstract:Inspired by the starfish's unique ability to achieve flexibility and posture-holding with minimal energy expenditure, we present a novel bioinspired morphing structure. Our two-component design, consisting of a thermoplastic mesh and elastomeric jacket, effectively mimics the functions of the starfish's ossicles, mutable collagenous tissues, and derma. This structure exhibits a remarkable combination of self-healing, time-dependent shape memory, and self-posture-holding properties. Systematic variations in mesh geometry demonstrate precise control over structural stiffness and thermal response, enabling customization for specific applications. The structure's scalability and ease of fabrication further enhance its adaptability. We experimentally demonstrate the potential of our biomimetic morphing structure using several prototypes. This work lays the foundation for developing a new type of versatile morphing structures with applications in diverse fields, including robotics, biomedical devices, and adaptive structures.

Abstract:Cellular materials with excellent mechanical efficiency are essential for aerospace structures, lightweight vehicles, and energy absorption. However, current synthetic cellular materials, such as lattice materials with a unit cell arranged in an ordered hierarchy, are still far behind many biological cellular materials in terms of both structural complexity and mechanical performance. Here, the complex porous structure and the mechanics of the cuttlebone are studied, which acts as a rigid buoyancy tank for cuttlefish to resist large hydrostatic pressure in the deep-sea environment. The cuttlebone structure, constructed like lamellar septa, separated by asymmetric, distorted S-shaped walls, exhibits superior strength and energy-absorption capability to the octet-truss lattice and conventional polymer and metal foams. Inspired by these findings, mechanically efficient cellular materials are designed and fabricated by 3D printing, which are greatly demanded for many applications including aerospace structures and tissue-engineering-scaffold. This study represents an effective approach for the design and engineering of high-performance cellular materials through bioinspired 3D printing.

Abstract:Analysis of the subunit polypeptide composition of Fraction 1 proteins gives information on the expression of both nuclear and chloroplast genomes; the large subunits of the protein are coded by chloroplast DNA, whereas the small subunits are coded by nuclear DNA. Fraction 1 protein isolated from the leaves of parasexual hybrid plants derived from the fusion of protoplasts of Nicotiana glauca and N. langsdorffii contains the small subunit polypeptides of both parent species and the large subunit polypeptides of only N. glauca. Fraction 1 protein isolated from the leaves of a hybrid plant obtained after the uptake of chloroplasts of N. suaveolens by protoplasts of white tissue of a variegating mutant of N. tabacum contains the large subunit polypeptides of both N. suaveolens and N. tabacum, as well as the small subunit polypeptides of both these species.

Abstract:Biological fish exhibit remarkable adaptability and exceptional swimming performance through their powerful and flexible bodies. Therefore, designing a continuum flexible body is significantly important for the development of a robotic fish. However, it is still challenging to replicate these functions of a biological body due to the limitations of actuation and material. In this paper, based on a tensegrity structure, we propose a bionic design scheme for a continuum robotic fish body with a property of stiffness variation. Its detailed structures and actuation principles are also presented. A mathematical model was established to analyze the bending characteristics of the tensegrity structure, which demonstrates the feasibility of mimicking the fish-like oscillation propulsion. Additionally, the stiffness variation mechanism is also exhibited experimentally to validate the effectiveness of the designed tensegrity fish body. Finally, a novel bionic robotic fish design scheme is proposed, integrating an electronic module-equipped fish head, a tensegrity body, and a flexible tail with a caudal fin. Subsequently, a prototype was developed. Extensive experiments were conducted to explore how control parameters and stiffness variation influence swimming velocity and turning performance. The obtained results reveal that the oscillation amplitude, frequency, and stiffness variation of the tensegrity robotic fish play crucial roles in swimming motions. With the stiffness variation, the developed tensegrity robotic fish achieves a maximum swimming velocity of 295 mm/s (0.84 body length per second, BL/s). Moreover, the bionic tensegrity robotic fish also performs a steering motion with a minimum turning radius of 230 mm (0.68 BL) and an angular velocity of 46.6°/s. The conducted studies will shed light on the novel design of a continuum robotic fish equipped with stiffness variation mechanisms.
