Abstract:We outline a proof of a remarkable conjecture of Labastida-Mari{\~n}o-Ooguri-Vafa about certain new algebraic structures of quantum link invariants and the integrality of infinite family of new topological invariants. Our method is based on the cut-and-join analysis and a special rational ring characterizing the structure of the Chern-Simons partition function.

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:We give partial affirmative answers to Landis conjecture in all dimensions for two different types of linear, second order, elliptic operators in a domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N$. In particular, we provide a sharp decay criterion that ensures when a solution of a nonnegative Schrödinger equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with a potential $V\leq 1$ is trivial. Moreover, we address the analogue of Landis conjecture for quasilinear problems. Our approach relies on the application of Liouville comparison principles and criticality theory.

Abstract:These are related, because the ideas involved in (1) form one of the main foundations for (2). More precisely, the proof of the Yau conjecture relies on an extension of the partial C estimate to metrics with conic singularities. Gang Tian has made claims to credit for these results. The purpose of this document is to rebut these claims on the grounds of originality, priority and correctness of the mathematical arguments. We acknowledge Tian’s many contributions to this field in the past and, partly for this reason, we have avoided raising our objections publicly over the last 15 months, but it seems now that this is the course we have to take in order to document the facts. In addition, this seems to us the responsible action to take and one we owe to our colleagues, especially those affected by these developments.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime. We construct a function $f$ on the natural numbers such that $f(x) \to \infty$ as $x \to \infty$ and $k_{p}(G)+k_{p'}(G)\geq f(|G|)$ for all finite groups $G$. Here $k_{p}(G)$ denotes the number of conjugacy classes of nontrivial $p$-elements in $G$ and $k_{p'}(G)$ denotes the number of conjugacy classes of elements of $G$ whose orders are coprime to $p$. This is a variation of an old theorem of Landau and is used to prove the following: There exists a number $c$ such that whenever $p$ is a prime and $G$ is a finite group of order divisible by $p$ with $|G|>c$, there exists a factorization $p-1 = ab$ with $a$ and $b$ positive integers such that $k_{p}(G) \geq a$ and $k_{p'}(G) \geq b$ with equalities in both cases if and only if $G=C_p \rtimes C_b$ with $C_G(C_p) = C_p$.

On Landis conjecture for positive Schrödinger operators on graphs

Abstract:In this note we study Landis conjecture for positive Schrödinger operators on graphs. More precisely, we give a decay criterion that ensures when $ \mathcal{H} $-harmonic functions for a positive Schrödinger operator $ \mathcal{H} $ with potentials bounded from above by $ 1 $ are trivial. We then specifically look at the special cases of $ \mathbb{Z}^{d} $ and regular trees for which we get explicit decay criterion. Moreover, we consider the fractional analogue of Landis conjecture on $ \mathbb{Z}^{d} $. Our approach relies on the discrete version of Liouville comparison principle which is also proved in this article.

Abstract:The survey we are presenting is over 22 years old but it has still some ideas which where never published (except in Polish). This survey is the base of the third Chapter of my book: KNOTS: From combinatorics of knot diagrams to combinatorial topology based on knots, which is still in preparation (but compare <a class="link-internal link-http" href="http://arxiv.org/pdf/math.GT/0512630">http://arxiv.org/pdf/math.GT/0512630</a>). The purpose of this survey is to present a new combinatorial method of constructing invariants of isotopy classes of tame links. The period of time between the spring of 1984 and the summer of 1985 was full of discoveries which revolutionized the knot theory and will have a deep impact on some other branches of mathematics. It started by the discovery of Jones of the new polynomial invariant of links (in May 1984), and the last big step (which will be described in this survey) has been made by Kauffman in August 1985 when Kauffman applied his method which allowed him to unify almost all previous work. This survey is far from being complete, even if we limit ourselves to the purely combinatorial methods and to the period May, 1984 -- September, 1985.

Abstract:This work deals with the Landau equation in a bounded domain with the Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary for any (possibly smoothly position dependent) accommodation coefficient and for the full range of interaction potentials, including the Coulomb case. We establish the global existence and a constructive asymptotic decay of solutions in a close-to-equilibrium regime. This is the first existence result for a Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary and that generalizes the similar results established for the Landau equation for other geometries in \cite{GuoLandau1,GS1,GS2,MR3625186,MR4076068}. We also answer to Villani's program \cite{MR2116276,MR2407976} about constructive accurate rate of convergence to the equilibrium {(quantitative H-Theorem)} for solutions to collisional kinetic equations satisfying a priori uniform bounds. The proofs rely on the study of a suitably linear problem for which we prove that the associated operator is hypocoercive, the associated semigroup is ultracontractive, and finally that it is asymptotically stable in many weighted $L^\infty$ spaces.

Landau's Theorem on conjugacy classes for normal subgroups

Abstract:Landau's theorem on conjugacy classes asserts that there are only finitely many finite groups, up to isomorphism, with exactly $k$ conjugacy classes for any positive integer $k$. We show that, for any positive integers $n$ and $s$, there exists only a finite number of finite groups $G$, up to isomorphism, having a normal subgroup $N$ of index $n$ which contains exactly $s$ non-central $G$-conjugacy classes. We provide upper bounds for the orders of $G$ and $N$, which are used by using GAP to classify all finite groups with normal subgroups having a small index and few $G$-classes. We also study the corresponding problems when we only take into account the set of $G$-classes of prime-power order elements contained in a normal subgroup.

Abstract:We reformulate the Landau analysis of Feynman integrals with the aim of advancing the state of the art in modern particle-physics computations. We contribute new algorithms for computing Landau singularities, using tools from polyhedral geometry and symbolic/numerical elimination. Inspired by the work of Gelfand, Kapranov, and Zelevinsky (GKZ) on generalized Euler integrals, we define the principal Landau determinant of a Feynman diagram. We illustrate with a number of examples that this algebraic formalism allows to compute many components of the Landau singular locus. We adapt the GKZ framework by carefully specializing Euler integrals to Feynman integrals. For instance, ultraviolet and infrared singularities are detected as irreducible components of an incidence variety, which project dominantly to the kinematic space. We compute principal Landau determinants for the infinite families of one-loop and banana diagrams with different mass configurations, and for a range of cutting-edge Standard Model processes. Our algorithms build on the Julia package Landau.jl and are implemented in the new open-source package PLD.jl available at <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://mathrepo.mis.mpg.de/PLD/" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>.

Abstract:We prove Landis-type results for both the semidiscrete heat and the stationary discrete Schrödinger equations. For the semidiscrete heat equation we show that, under the assumption of two-time spatial decay conditions on the solution $u$, then necessarily $u\equiv 0$. For the stationary discrete Schrödinger equation we deduce that, under a vanishing condition at infinity on the solution $u$, then $u\equiv 0$. In order to obtain such results, we demonstrate suitable quantitative upper and lower estimates for the $L^2$-norm of the solution within a spatial lattice $(h\mathbb{Z})^d$. These estimates manifest an interpolation phenomenon between continuum and discrete scales, showing that close-to-continuum and purely discrete regimes are different in nature.

Abstract:The near-completion of the program of endoscopy poses the question of what lies next. This article takes a broad view of ideas beyond the program of endoscopy, highlighting the connections among them, and emphasizing the relationship between local and global aspects. Central among those ideas is the one proposed in a 2000 lecture of R. P. Langlands, aiming to extract from the stable trace formula of a group G the bulk of those automorphic representations in the image of the conjectural functorial lift corresponding to a morphism of L-groups ${^LH} \to {^LG}$. With the extension of the problem of functoriality to the "relative" setting of spherical varieties and related spaces, some structure behind such comparisons has started to reveal itself. In a seemingly unrelated direction, a program initiated by Braverman--Kazhdan, also around 2000, to generalize the Godement--Jacquet proof of the functional equation to arbitrary L-functions, has received renewed attention in recent years. We survey ideas and developments in this direction, as well, and discuss the relationship between the two programs.

Abstract:Let $k\geqslant 2$ be an integer and let $\lambda$ be the Liouville function. Given $k$ non-negative distinct integers $h_1,\ldots,h_k$, the Chowla conjecture claims that $\sum_{n\leqslant x}\lambda(n+h_1)\cdots\lambda(n+h_k)=o(x)$. An unconditional answer to this conjecture is yet to be found, and in this paper, we take a conditional approach. More precisely, we establish a bound for the sums $\sum_{n\leqslant x}\lambda(n+h_1)\cdots\lambda(n+h_k)$ under the existence of Landau-Siegel zeroes. Our work constitutes an improvement over the previous related results of Germán and Kátai, Chinis, and Tao and Teräväinen.

Abstract:We present and discuss the many results obtained concerning a famous limit theorem, the local limit theorem, which has many interfaces, with Number Theory notably, and for which, in spite of considerable efforts, the question concerning conditions of validity of the local limit theorem, has up to now no satisfactory solution. These results mostly concern sufficient conditions for the validity of the local limit theorem and its interesting variant forms: strong local limit theorem, strong local limit theorem with convergence in variation. Quite importantly are necessary conditions, and the results obtained are sparse, essentially: Rozanov's necessary condition, Gamkrelidze's necessary condition, and Mukhin's necessary and sufficient condition. Extremely useful and instructive are the counter-examples due to Azlarov and Gamkrelidze, as well as necessary and sufficient conditions obtained for a class of random variables, such as Mitalauskas' characterization of the local limit theorem in the strong form for random variables having stable limit distributions. The method of characteristic functions and the Bernoulli part extraction method, are presented and compared. A second part of the survey is devoted to the more recent study of the almost sure local limit theorem, instilled by Denker and Koch. The almost sure local limit theorems established already cover the i.i.d. case, the stable case, Markov chains, the model of the Dickman function. Our aim in writing this monograph was notably to bring to knowledge many interesting results obtained by the Lithuanian and Russian Schools of Probability during the sixties and after, and which are essentially written in Russian, and moreover often published in Journals of difficult access.
