Abstract:We solve some problems about relative lengths of Maltsev conditions, in particular, we provide an affirmative answer to a classical problem raised by A. Day more than 50 years ago. In detail, both congruence distributive and congruence modular varieties admit Maltsev characterizations by means of the existence of a finite but variable number of appropriate terms. A. Day showed that from Jónsson terms witnessing congruence distributivity it is possible to construct terms witnessing congruence modularity. We show that Day's result about the number of such terms is sharp when n is even. We also deal with other kinds of terms, such as alvin, Gumm, directed, as well as with possible variations we will call "specular" and "defective". All the results hold when restricted to locally finite varieties.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:We study in general algebras Gratzer's notion of congruence preserving function, characterizing functions in terms of stability under inverse image of particular Boolean algebras of subsets generated from any subset of the algebra. Weakening Gratzer's notion to only finite index congruences, a similar result holds with lattices of sets. Genereralizing the notion to that of stable preorder preserving function, we extend these characterizations to Boolean algebras and lattices generated from any recognizable subset of the algebra. Our starting point is a result with related flavor on the additive algebra of natural integers which was obtained some years ago. All these results can be visualized in the diagram of Table 1. We finally consider some simple particular conditions on the algebra allowing to get a richer diagram.

We also show that in general d -algebras are not congruence-permutable, and that a sufficient condition for a d -algebra to be congruence-permutable is being directed. Abstract:We show that Ramanujan-type congruences are preserved by the action of the shallow Hecke algebra and provide several structure results for them. We discover a dichotomy between congruences originating in Hecke eigenvalues and congruences on arithmetic progressions with cube-free periods. The scarcity of the latter was investigated recently. We explain that they provide congruences among algebraic parts of twisted central $\mathrm{L}$-values. We specialize our results to partition congruences, for which we investigate the proofs of partition congruences by Atkin and by Ono, and develop a heuristic that suggests that their approach by Hecke operators acting diagonally modulo $\ell$ on modular forms is optimal. In an extended example, we showcase how to employ our conclusions to benefit experimental work.

Abstract:We prove the unbounded denominators conjecture in the theory of noncongruence modular forms for finite index subgroups of SL_2(Z). Our result includes also Mason's generalization of the original conjecture to the setting of vector-valued modular forms, thereby supplying a new path to the congruence property in rational conformal field theory. The proof involves a new arithmetic holonomicity bound of a potential-theoretic flavor, together with Nevanlinna's second main theorem, the congruence subgroup property of SL_2(Z[1/p]), and a close description of the Fuchsian uniformization D(0,1)/\Gamma_N of the Riemann surface C \setminus \mu_N.

Note on a differential algebra bound

Abstract:In a recent article, Freitag, Moosa and the author showed that in differentially closed fields of characteristic zero, if two types are nonorthogonal, then their n+3 and m+3 Morley powers are not weakly orthogonal, where n and m are their respective Lascar ranks. In this short note, we prove that the bound is tight: there are such types with weakly orthogonal n+2 and m+2 Morley powers. The types in question were constructed by Freitag and Moosa as examples of types with degree of nonminimality 2. As interesting as our result are our methods: we rely mostly on Galois theory and some descent argument for types, combined with the failure of the inverse Galois problem over constant parameters.

Abstract:Racks and quandles are algebraic structures with a single binary operation that is right self-distributive and right invertible, and additionally idempotent in the case of quandles. The invertibility condition is equivalent to the existence of a second binary operation that acts as a right inverse to the first, so that racks and quandles may also be viewed as algebraic structures with a pair of (dependent) binary operations. When forming a quotient rack or quandle it is necessary to take this two-operation view, and define a congruence as an equivalence relation on the rack or quandle that respects both operations. However, in defining a congruence some authors have omitted the condition on the inverse operation, and defined a congruence as an equivalence relation respecting the primary operation only. We show that while respecting the primary operation is sufficient in the case of finite racks and quandles, it is not in general sufficient in the infinite case. We do this by constructing explicit examples of "half congruences": equivalence relations that respect exactly one of the two operations. Our work also allows us to completely characterise congruences in connected Alexander quandles.

Abstract:We define a congruence module associated to a surjective -algebra morphism , with a discrete valuation ring, a complete noetherian local -algebra regular at , the kernel of , and a finitely generated -module. We establish a numerical criterion for to have a free direct summand over of positive rank. It is in terms of the lengths of and the torsion part of . It generalizes results of Wiles, Lenstra, and Diamond, that deal with the case when the codimension of is zero. Number theoretic applications include integral (non-minimal) theorems in situations of positive defect conditional on certain standard conjectures. Here is a deformation ring parametrizing certain Galois representations and is a Hecke algebra. An example of a positive defect situation is that of proving modularity lifting for 2-dimensional -adic Galois representations over an imaginary quadratic field. The proofs combine our commutative algebra results with a generalization due to Calegari and Geraghty of the patching method of Wiles and Taylor–Wiles and level raising arguments that go back to Ribet. The results provide new evidence in favor of the intriguing, and as yet fledgling, torsion analog of the classical Langlands correspondence. We also prove unconditional integral results for Hecke algebras acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves over Q. This leads to a torsion Jacquet–Langlands correspondence comparing integral Hecke algebras acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves and modular curves. In this case the cohomology has abundant torsion and so our correspondence cannot be deduced by means of the classical Jacquet–Langlands correspondence.

Abstract:Tolerance relations were investigated by several authors in various algebraic structures, see e.g. the monograph by I. Chajda. Recently G. Czédli studied so-called 2-uniform tolerances on lattices, i.e. tolerances that are compatible with the lattice operations and whose blocks are of cardinality 2. He showed that two such tolerances on a lattice containing no infinite chain permute if and only if they are amicable (a concept introduced in his paper). We extend this study to tolerances on posets. Since in posets we have no lattice operations, we must modify the notion of amicability. We modified it in such a way that in case of lattices it coincides with the original definition. With this new definition we can prove that two tolerances on a poset containing no infinite chain permute if and only if they are amicable in the new sense.

Abstract:Journal of Mathematical Logic, Ahead of Print. We initiate the study of a generalization of Kim-independence, Conant-independence, based on the notion of strong Kim-dividing of Kaplan, Ramsey and Shelah. A version of Conant-independence was originally introduced to prove that all [math] theories are [math]. We introduce an axiom on stationary independence relations, essentially generalizing the "freedom" axiom in some of the free amalgamation theories of Conant, and show that this axiom provides the correct setting for carrying out arguments of Chernikov, Kaplan and Ramsey on [math] theories relative to a stationary independence relation. Generalizing Conant's results on free amalgamation to the limits of our knowledge of the [math] hierarchy, we show using methods from Conant as well as our previous work that any theory where the equivalent conditions of this local variant of [math] holds is either [math] or [math] and is either simple or [math]. We observe that these theories give an interesting class of examples of theories where Conant-independence is symmetric. This includes all of Conant's examples, the small cycle-free random graphs of Shelah, and the (finite-language) [math]-categorical Hrushovski constructions of Evans and Wong. We then answer Conant's question on the existence of non-modular free amalgamation theories. We show that the generic functional structures of Kruckman and Ramsey are examples of non-modular free amalgamation theories. We also show that any free amalgamation theory is [math] or [math], while an [math] free amalgamation theory is simple if and only if it is modular. Finally, we show that every theory where Conant-independence is symmetric is [math]. Therefore, symmetry for Conant-independence gives the next known neostability-theoretic dividing line on the [math] hierarchy beyond [math]. We explain the connection to some established open questions.

Abstract:The main aim of this note is to show that, in the regular context, every matrix property in the sense of Z. Janelidze either implies the Mal'tsev property, or is implied by the majority property. When the regular category is arithmetical, i.e., both Mal'tsev and a majority category, then we show that satisfies every non-trivial matrix property.

Abstract:The circuit satisfaction problem CSAT(A) of an algebra A is the problem of deciding whether an equation over A (encoded by two circuits) has a solution or not. While solving systems of equations over finite algebras is either in P or NP-complete, no such dichotomy result is known for CSAT(A). In fact, Idziak, Kawalek and Krzaczkowski constructed examples of nilpotent Maltsev algebras A, for which, under the assumption of ETH and an open conjecture in circuit theory, CSAT(A) can be solved in quasipolynomial, but not polynomial time. The same is true for the circuit equivalence problem CEQV(A). In this paper we generalize their result to all nilpotent Maltsev algebras of Fitting length >2. This not only advances the project of classifying the complexity of CSAT (and CEQV) for algebras from congruence modular varieties, but we also believe that the tools we developed are of independent interest in the study of nilpotent algebras.
