Abstract:Working over the split octonions over an algebraically closed field, we solve a polynomial equation, where all coefficients are scalar with the possible exception for the free term. As a consequence, we calculated the n-th radicals of an octonion.

The set of solutions of a general linear monomial equation over split octonions is considered. We also study how the dimension of the set of solutions is changed under the degeneration of a linear equation.

Abstract:We study the theory of equations in one variable over polyhedral semirings. The article revolves around a notion of solution to a polynomial equation over a polyhedral semiring. Our main results are a characterisation of local solutions in terms of the coefficients, a local-global principle, and the basics of multiplicity and discriminants. Our primary sources of motivation are tropical geometry and the theory of exceptional points in non-Hermitian physics.

Abstract:This paper is purely expository. We present short elementary proofs of * the Gauss Theorem on constructibility of regular polygons; * the existence of a cubic equation unsolvable in real radicals; * the existence of a quintic equation unsolvable in complex radicals (Galois Theorem). The statements of these celebrated results are simple and well-known. However, their proofs given in most textbooks rely upon much unmotivated material and are far from being economic. We do not use the terms `Galois group' or even `group'. The paper is accessible for students familiar with polynomials and complex numbers, and could be an interesting easy reading for professional mathematicians. Short English version is followed by an extended Russian version where before presenting the proofs we illustrate the main ideas by sequences of problems with hints or solutions.

On the Field Isomorphism Problem for the Family of Simplest Quartic Fields

Abstract:Deciding whether or not two polynomials have isomoprhic splitting fields over the rationals is the Field Isomorphism Problem. We consider polynomials of the form $f_n(x) = x^4-nx^3-6x^2+nx+1$ with $n \neq 3$ a positive integer and we let $K_n$ denote the splitting field of $f_n(x)$; a `simplest quartic field'. Our main theorem states that under certain hypotheses there can be at most one positive integer $m \neq n$ such that $K_m=K_n$. The proof relies on the existence of squares in recurrent sequences and a result of J.H.E. Cohn [3]. These sequences allow us to establish uniqueness of the splitting field under additional hypotheses in Section (5) and to establish a connection with elliptic curves in Section (6).

Abstract:We present short elementary proofs of the well-known Ruffini-Abel-Galois theorems on insolvability of algebraic equations in radicals. These proofs are obtained from existing expositions by stripping away material not required for the proofs (but presumably required elsewhere). In particular, we do not use the terms `Galois group' and even `group'. However, our presentation is a good way to learn (or to recall) a starting idea of Galois theory: the symmetry of a polynomial of several variables is decreased when a radical is extracted. So the note provides a bridge (by showing that there is no gap) between elementary mathematics and Galois theory. The note is accessible to students familiar with polynomials, complex numbers and permutations; so the note might be interesting easy reading for professional mathematicians.
Polynomial compositions with large monodromy groups and applications to arithmetic dynamics

Abstract:For a composition $f=f_1\circ\cdots \circ f_r$ of polynomials $f_i\in \mathbb Q[x]$ of degrees $d_i\geq 5$ with alternating or symmetric monodromy group, we show that the monodromy group of $f$ contains the iterated wreath product $A_{d_r}\wr \cdots\wr A_{d_1}$. A similar property holds more generally for polynomials that do not factor through $x^d$ or Chebyshev. We derive consequences to arithmetic dynamics regarding arboreal representations, and forward and backward orbits of such $f$. In particular, given an orbit $(a_n)_{n=0}^\infty$ of $f$ as above, we show that for "almost all" $a\in \mathbb Z$, the set of primes $p$ for which some $a_n$ is congruent to $a$ mod $p$ is "small".

Abstract:We prove that the Möbius function is orthogonal to polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$ (up to a characteristic condition). We use this orthogonality property to count prime solutions to affine-linear equations of bounded complexity in $\mathbb{F}_p[x]$, with analog to a work of Green and Tao.

Solving Polynomial Equations Over Finite Fields

Abstract:We present a randomized algorithm for solving low-degree polynomial equation systems over finite fields faster than exhaustive search. In order to do so, we follow a line of work by Lokshtanov, Paturi, Tamaki, Williams, and Yu (SODA 2017), Björklund, Kaski, and Williams (ICALP 2019), and Dinur (SODA 2021). In particular, we generalize Dinur's algorithm for $\mathbb{F}_2$ to all finite fields, in particular the "symbolic interpolation" of Björklund, Kaski, and Williams, and we use an efficient trimmed multipoint evaluation and interpolation procedure for multivariate polynomials over finite fields by Van der Hoeven and Schost (AAECC 2013). The running time of our algorithm matches that of Dinur's algorithm for $\mathbb{F}_2$ and is significantly faster than the one of Lokshtanov et al. for $q>2$. We complement our results with tight conditional lower bounds that, surprisingly, we were not able to find in the literature. In particular, under the strong exponential time hypothesis, we prove that it is impossible to solve $n$-variate low-degree polynomial equation systems over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in time $O((q-\varepsilon)^{n})$. As a bonus, we show that under the counting version of the strong exponential time hypothesis, it is impossible to compute the number of roots of a single $n$-variate low-degree polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in time ${O((q-\varepsilon)^{n})}$; this generalizes a result of Williams (SOSA 2018) from $\mathbb{F}_2$ to all finite fields.

Abstract:This paper establishes an analog of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem to polynomial rings over finite fields, affirmatively answering a conjecture of C. Tompkins. A $k$-uniform family of subsets of a set of finite size $n$ is $l$-intersecting if any two subsets in the family intersect in at least $l$ elements. The study of such intersecting families is a core subject of extremal set theory, tracing its roots to the seminal 1961 Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, which establishes a sharp upper bound on the size of these families. As an analog of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, we determine the largest possible size of a family of monic polynomials, each of degree $n$, over a finite field $F_q$, where every pair of polynomials in the family shares a common factor of degree at least $l$. We establish that the upper bound for this size is $q^{n-l}$ and further characterize all extremal families that achieve this maximum size. Further extending our study to triple-intersecting families, where every triplet of polynomials shares a common factor of degree at least $l$, we prove that only trivial families achieve the corresponding upper bound. Moreover, by relaxing the conditions to include polynomials of degree at most $n$, we affirm that the same upper bound holds and only trivial families achieve the corresponding upper bound.

Abstract:We study a finite dimensional quadratic graded algebra R defined from a finite ranked poset. This algebra has been central to the study of the splitting algebra of the poset, A, as introduced by Gelfand, Retakh, Serconek and Wilson . The algebra A is known to be quadratic when the poset satisfies a combinatorial condition known as uniform, and R is the quadratic dual of an associated graded algebra of A. We prove that R is Koszul and the poset is uniform if and only if the poset is Cohen-Macaulay. Koszulity of R implies Koszulity of A. We also show that when R is Koszul, the cohomology of the order complex of the poset can be identified with certain cohomology groups defined internally to the ring R. Finally, we settle in the negative the long-standing question: Does numerically Koszul imply Koszul for algebras of the form R?

Complex solutions of polynomial equations on the unit circle

Abstract:We explore systems of polynomial equations where we seek complex solutions with absolute value 1. Geometrically, this amounts to understanding intersections of algebraic varieties with tori -- Cartesian powers of the unit circle. We study the properties of varieties in which this intersection is Zariski dense, give a criterion for Zariski density and use it to show that the problem is decidable. This problem is a ``continuous'' analogue of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for the multiplicative group of complex numbers, however, the results are very different from Manin-Mumford. While the results of the paper appear to be new, the proofs are quite elementary. This is an expository article aiming to introduce some classical mathematical topics to a general audience. We also list some exercises and problems at the end for the curious reader to further explore these topics.

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be a non-zero algebraic number. Let $K$ be the Galois closure of $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha)$ with Galois group $G$ and $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ be the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article, among the other results, we prove the following. If $f\in \bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ is a non-zero element of the group ring $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ and $\alpha$ is a given algebraic number such that $f(\alpha^n)$ is a non-zero algebraic integer for infinitely many natural numbers $n$, then $\alpha$ is an algebraic integer. This result generalizes the result of Polya [11], Corvaja and Zannier [2] and Philippon and Rath [9]. We also prove the analogue of this result for rational functions with algebraic coefficients. Inspired by a result of B. de Smit [4], we prove a finite version of the Polya type result for a binary recurrence sequences of non-zero algebraic numbers. In order to prove these results, we apply the techniques of Corvaja and Zannier along with the results of Kulkarni et al., [6] which are applications of the Schmidt subspace theorem.

Abstract:We present a method for the solution of polynomial equations. We do not intend to present one more method among several others, because today there are many excellent methods. Our main aim is educational. Here we attempt to present a method with elementary tools in order to be understood and useful by students and educators. For this reason, we provide a self contained approach. Our method is a variation of the well known method of resultant, that has its origin back to Euler. Our goal, in the present paper, is in the spirit of calculus and secondary school mathematics. An extensive discussion of the theory of zeros of polynomials and extremal problems for polynomials the reader can find in the books 10 and 13 in our references.

Decomposing Solution Sets of Polynomial Systems: A New Parallel Monodromy Breakup Algorithm

Abstract:We consider the numerical irreducible decomposition of a positive dimensional solution set of a polynomial system into irreducible factors. Path tracking techniques computing loops around singularities connect points on the same irreducible components. The computation of a linear trace for each factor certifies the decomposition. This factorization method exhibits a good practical performance on solution sets of relative high degrees. Using the same concepts of monodromy and linear trace, we present a new monodromy breakup algorithm. It shows a better performance than the old method which requires construction of permutations of witness points in order to break up the solution set. In contrast, the new algorithm assumes a finer approach allowing us to avoid tracking unnecessary homotopy paths. As we designed the serial algorithm keeping in mind distributed computing, an additional advantage is that its parallel version can be easily built. Synchronization issues resulted in a performance loss of the straightforward parallel version of the old algorithm. Our parallel implementation of the new approach bypasses these issues, therefore, exhibiting a better performance, especially on solution sets of larger degree.

Abstract:For each positive integer $n$, the basic classical complex Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2n)$ has a unique equivalence class of infinite-dimensional completely-pointed modules, those weight modules with one-dimensional weight spaces. The polynomials $\mathbb{C}[x_{1},x_{2}, \ldots, x_{n}]$ in $n$ indeterminates is a choice representative. In the case $n > 1$, tensoring $\mathbb{C}[x_{1},x_{2}, \ldots, x_{n}]$ with the natural $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2n)$-module $\mathbb{C}^{1|2n}$ gives rise to a tensor product representation $V = \mathbb{C}[x_{1},x_{2}, \ldots, x_{n}] \otimes \mathbb{C}^{1|2n}$ of $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2n)$ that decomposes into two irreducible summands. These summands are understood through automorphisms of $V$ that turn out to be intertwining operators describing the first summand as an isomorphic copy of $\mathbb{C}[x_{1},x_{2}, \ldots, x_{n}]$ and the second summand as $\mathbb{C}[x_{1},x_{2}, \ldots, x_{n}] \otimes \mathbb{C}^{2n}$, which does not have a natural $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2n)$-module structure. We describe the intertwining operators as infinite diagonal block matrices of arrowhead matrices and give formulas for the action of the odd root vectors (which generate $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2n)$) on bases of of each of these conjugated oscillator realizations. The decomposition in the $n=1$ case yields three summands, and we recall why the difference in cases is to be expected.

Abstract:The generic monic polynomial of degree N features N a priori arbitrary coefficients $c_m$ and N zeros $z_n$. In this paper we limit consideration to $N = 8$ and $N = 9$. We show that if the $N$ -- a priori arbitrary -- coefficients $c_m$ of these polynomials are appropriately defined -- as it were, a posteriori -- in terms of 6 arbitrary parameters, then the $N$ roots of these polynomials can be explicitly computed in terms of radicals of these 6 parameters. We also report the constraints on the N coefficients $c_m$ implied by the fact that they are so defined in terms of 6 arbitrary parameters; as well as the explicit determination of these 6 parameters in terms of the N coefficients $c_m$.
