Abstract:For a composition $f=f_1\circ\cdots \circ f_r$ of polynomials $f_i\in \mathbb Q[x]$ of degrees $d_i\geq 5$ with alternating or symmetric monodromy group, we show that the monodromy group of $f$ contains the iterated wreath product $A_{d_r}\wr \cdots\wr A_{d_1}$. A similar property holds more generally for polynomials that do not factor through $x^d$ or Chebyshev. We derive consequences to arithmetic dynamics regarding arboreal representations, and forward and backward orbits of such $f$. In particular, given an orbit $(a_n)_{n=0}^\infty$ of $f$ as above, we show that for "almost all" $a\in \mathbb Z$, the set of primes $p$ for which some $a_n$ is congruent to $a$ mod $p$ is "small".

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the monodromy groups of polynomial compositions and their applications in arithmetic dynamics. Specifically, the authors are concerned with the properties of the monodromy group of the entire composition \( f \) when the polynomial \( f \) is a composition of several polynomials \( f_i \), and the monodromy group of each \( f_i \) is an alternating group or a symmetric group. They show that in this case, the monodromy group of \( f \) contains a specific iterated wreath product, and use this result to explore some important problems in arithmetic dynamics, such as the properties of arboreal Galois representations, the behavior of orbits, and the prime density problems related to these orbits. ### Main research problems: 1. **Properties of monodromy groups**: - For a polynomial composition of the form \( f = f_1 \circ \cdots \circ f_r \), where the degree \( d_i \geq 5 \) of each \( f_i \) and the monodromy group is an alternating group or a symmetric group, study the structure of the monodromy group of \( f \). - Prove that the monodromy group of \( f \) contains an iterated wreath product \( A_{d_r} \wr \cdots \wr A_{d_1} \). 2. **Applications in arithmetic dynamics**: - Study the behavior of the forward and backward orbits of the polynomial \( f \) modulo \( p \), especially the congruence properties of these orbits modulo \( p \). - Explore the conditions under which for most \( a \in \mathbb{Z} \), the set of primes \( p \) such that some \( a_n \) is congruent to \( a \) modulo \( p \) is "small". 3. **Arboreal Galois representations**: - Study the properties of the images of arboreal Galois representations under certain specializations, especially how these images are embedded in the monodromy group of the polynomial. - Use these properties to derive results about the prime density of forward and backward orbits. ### Specific problem examples: - **Forward orbits**: - Given a polynomial \( f(x) \), such as \( f(x) = x^2 - x + 1 \) or \( f(x) = x^2 \), study the behavior of its forward orbit \( (a_n)_{n = 0}^\infty \) modulo \( p \). - For example, when \( f(x) = x^2 - x + 1 \), \( a = 0 \), and \( a_0 = 2 \), study the density of primes \( p \) such that \( a_n \equiv 0 \pmod{p} \). - **Backward orbits**: - Study the irreducibility of the backward orbit \( (f^n)^{-1}(a) \) of the polynomial \( f \) modulo \( p \). - For example, study the density of primes \( p \) such that \( f^n(x) - a \) is irreducible modulo \( p \). ### Conclusion: By studying the monodromy groups of polynomial compositions and their applications in arithmetic dynamics, the authors provide a series of important theoretical results. These results not only deepen our understanding of polynomial compositions but also provide new tools and methods in the field of arithmetic dynamics.
