Abstract:In this paper, we derive explicit formulas for computing the roots of $ax^{2}+bx+c=0$ with $a$ being not invertible in split quaternion algebra. We also imitate the approach developed by Opfer, Janovska and Falcao etc. to verify our results when the corresponding companion polynomials are not identically vanishing.

In general speaking, it is hard to find the solutions of equations in algebras containing zero divisor. In this paper, we manage to derive explicit formulas for computing the roots of $x^{2}+bx+c=0$ in split quaternion algebra.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to show how the problem of finding the zeros of unilateral n-order quaternionic polynomials can be solved by determining the eigen-vectors of the corresponding companion matrix. This approach, probably superfluous in the case of quadratic equations for which a closed formula can be given, becomes truly useful for (unilateral) n-order polynomials. To understand the strehgth of this method, we compare it with the Niven algorithm and show where this (full) matrix approach improves previous methods based on the use of the Niven algorithm. For the convenience of the readers, we explicitly solve some examples of second and third order unilateral quaternionic polynomials. The leading idea of the practical solution method proposed in this work can be summarized in following three steps: translating the quaternionic polynomial in the eigenvalue problem for its companion matrix, finding its eigenvectors, and, finally, giving the quaternionic solution of the unilateral polynomial in terms of the components of such eigenvectors. A brief discussion on bilateral quaternionic quadratic equations is also presented.

Abstract:In comparison to quaternions, split quaternions exhibit a more intricate algebraic structure, characterized by the presence of nontrivial zero factors. Furthermore, in various fields such as geometry and electromagnetism, split quaternions serve as more convenient research tools than quaternions. This paper aims to establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of (anti‐) η ‐Hermitian solutions to a novel system of matrix equations formulated over split quaternions. We also provide the general expression of such solutions when the system is solvable, along with the least squares (anti‐) η ‐Hermitian solution in the case of inconsistency. To illustrate the key findings of this paper, numerical examples are presented.

In this paper, by the formulas of solving the equations $ax=b$ and $ax^2+bx+c=0$ over split quaternions, we make an attempt to understand the left spectrum of a split quaternion matrix of order 2.

Abstract:When one expands a Schur function in terms of the irreducible characters of the symplectic (or orthogonal) group, the coefficient of the trivial character is 0 unless the indexing partition has an appropriate form. A number of q-analogues of this fact were conjectured in math.QA/0112035; the present paper proves most of those conjectures, as well as some new identities suggested by the proof technique. The proof involves showing that a nonsymmetric version of the relevant integral is annihilated by a suitable ideal of the affine Hecke algebra, and that any such annihilated functional satisfies the desired vanishing property. This does not, however, give rise to vanishing identities for the standard nonsymmetric Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials; we discuss the required modification to these polynomials to support such results.

Abstract:Concerning quartics, two particular quantifier elimination (QE) problems of historical interests and practical values are studied. We solve the problems by the theory of complete discrimination systems and negative root discriminant sequences for polynomials that provide a method for real (positive/negative) and complex root classification for polynomials. The equivalent quantifier-free formulas are obtained mainly be hand and are simpler than those obtained automatically by previous methods or QE tools. Also, applications of the results to program verification and determination of positivity of symmetric polynomials are showed.

Abstract:The purpose of this manuscript is to derive the Hoffman-Wielandt inequality and its most general form for quaternion matrices. Diagonalizabilty of the block companion matrix of certain quadratic (linear) quaternion matrix polynomials is brought out. As a consequence, we prove that if $Q(\lambda)$ is another quadratic (linear) quaternion matrix polynomial, then under certain conditions on the coefficients, a generalization of the Hoffman-Wielandt inequality for their corresponding block companion matrices holds. We also prove that if $P(\lambda)$ is a quaternion matrix polynomial with unitary coefficients, then any right eigenvalue $\lambda_0$ of $P(\lambda)$ lies in the annular region $\frac{1}{2} < |\lambda_0| < 2$.

Abstract:The manuscript presents the $LU$ approach to matrix biorthogonal polynomials when all the even ordered entries in the Gram matrix are zero. This arises in case of a quadratic transformation which is briefly discussed. Further, the main diagonal of the Gram matrix is a zero diagonal and we present the theory that follows from this fact. Precisely, we discuss the Christoffel transformation and matrix representations of the kernel polynomials, usually called the ABC Theorem. Finally, we provide an illustration of our results assuming the Gram matrix has Hankel symmetry.

Abstract:Polynomial factorization and root finding are among the most standard themes of computational mathematics. Yet still, little has been done for polynomials over quaternion algebras, with the single exception of Hamiltonian quaternions for which there are known numerical methods for polynomial root approximation. The sole purpose of the present paper is to present a polynomial factorization algorithm for division quaternion algebras over number fields, together with its adaptation for root finding.

Abstract:We design several real representations of split quaternion matrices with the primary objective of establishing both necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions within a system of split quaternion matrix equations. This includes conditions for the general solution without any constraints, as well as solutions and -(anti-)Hermitian solutions. Furthermore, we derive the expressions for the general solutions when it is solvable. As an application, we investigate the solutions to a system of five split quaternion matrix equations involving . Finally, we present several algorithms and numerical examples to demonstrate the results of this paper.

Abstract:In this paper, according to the classical LSQR algorithm for solving least squares (LS) problem, an iterative method is proposed for finding the minimum-norm pure imaginary solution of the quaternionic least squares (QLS) problem. By means of real representation of quaternion matrix, the QLS's correspongding vector algorithm is rewrited back to the matrix-form algorthm without Kronecker product and long vectors. Finally, numerical examples are reported that show the favorable numerical properties of the method.

Abstract:We consider polynomials of bi-degree $(n,1)$ over the skew field of quaternions where the indeterminates commute with each other and with all coefficients. Polynomials of this type do not generally admit factorizations. We recall a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a factorization with univariate linear factors that has originally been stated by Skopenkov and Krasauskas. Such a factorization is, in general, non-unique by known factorization results for univariate quaternionic polynomials. We unveil existence of bivariate polynomials with non-unique factorizations that cannot be explained in this way and characterize them geometrically and algebraically. Existence of factorizations is related to the existence of special rulings of two different types (left/right) on the ruled surface parameterized by the bivariate polynomial in the projective space over the quaternions. Special non-uniqueness in above sense can be explained algebraically by commutation properties of factors in suitable factorizations. A necessary geometric condition for this to happen is degeneration to a point of at least one of the left/right rulings.

Abstract:In this paper, we find the roots of lightlike quaternions. By introducing the concept of the Moore-Penrose inverse in split quaternions, we solve the linear equations $axb=d$, $xa=bx$ and $xa=b\bar{x}$. Also we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for two split quaternions to be similar or consimilar.

Abstract: We clarify the linear algebra used in the quaternionic pluripotential theory so that proofs of several results there can be greatly simplified. In particular, we characterize and normalize real $2$-forms with respect to the quaternionic structure, and show that the Moore determinant of a quaternionic hyperhermitian matrix is the coefficient of the exterior product of the associated real $2$-form. As a corollary, the quaternionic Monge-Amp\`{e}re operator is the coefficient of the exterior product of the Baston operator.

Abstract:We exhibit an explicit formula for the cardinality of solutions to a class of quadratic matrix equations over finite fields. We prove that the orbits of these solutions under the natural conjugation action of the general linear groups can be separated by classical conjugation invariants defined by characteristic polynomials. We also find a generating set for the vanishing ideal of these orbits.

Abstract:We consider bivariate polynomials over the skew field of quaternions, where the indeterminates commute with all coefficients and with each other. We analyze existence of univariate factorizations, that is, factorizations with univariate linear factors. A necessary condition for existence of univariate factorizations is factorization of the norm polynomial into a product of univariate polynomials. This condition is, however, not sufficient. Our central result states that univariate factorizations exist after multiplication with a suitable univariate real polynomial as long as the necessary factorization condition is fulfilled. We present an algorithm for computing this real polynomial and a corresponding univariate factorization. If a univariate factorization of the original polynomial exists, a suitable input of the algorithm produces a constant multiplication factor, thus giving an a posteriori condition for existence of univariate factorizations. Some factorizations obtained in this way are of interest in mechanism science. We present an example of a curious closed-loop mechanism with eight revolute joints.
