Abstract:In this paper we create a definition for prime gaps in the Gaussian integers using a boxcar metric. From this we used numerical methods to derive an asymptotic upper bound for the gaps in this scenario, namely O(log^2|p_{n}|).

Abstract:The Gaussian moat problem asks whether it is possible to find an infinite sequence of distinct Gaussian prime numbers such that the difference between consecutive numbers in the sequence is bounded. In this paper, we have proved that the answer is `No', that is an infinite sequence of distinct Gaussian prime numbers can not be bounded by an absolute constant, for the Gaussian primes $p=a^2+b^2$ with $a,b\neq0$. We consider each prime $(a,b)$ as a lattice point on the complex plane and use their properties to prove the main result.

Abstract:We show that almost all sectors of the disc $\{z \in \mathbb{C}: |z|^2\leq X\}$ of area $(\log X)^{15.1}$ contain products of exactly two Gaussian primes, and that almost all sectors of area $(\log X)^{1 + \varepsilon}$ contain products of exactly three Gaussian primes. The argument is based on mean value theorems, large value estimates and pointwise bounds for Hecke character sums.

Abstract:We study the first occurrences of gaps between primes in the arithmetic progression (P): $r$, $r+q$, $r+2q$, $r+3q,\ldots,$ where $q$ and $r$ are coprime integers, $q>r\ge1$. The growth trend and distribution of the first-occurrence gap sizes are similar to those of maximal gaps between primes in (P). The histograms of first-occurrence gap sizes, after appropriate rescaling, are well approximated by the Gumbel extreme value distribution. Computations suggest that first-occurrence gaps are much more numerous than maximal gaps: there are $O(\log^2 x)$ first-occurrence gaps between primes in (P) below $x$, while the number of maximal gaps is only $O(\log x)$. We explore the connection between the asymptotic density of gaps of a given size and the corresponding generalization of Brun's constant. For the first occurrence of gap $d$ in (P), we expect the end-of-gap prime $p\asymp\sqrt{d}\exp(\sqrt{d/\varphi(q)})$ infinitely often. Finally, we study the gap size as a function of its index in the sequence of first-occurrence gaps.

Abstract:Assuming the Riemann hypothesis, this article discusses a new elementary argument that seems to prove that the maximal prime gap of a finite sequence of primes p_1, p_2, ..., p_n <= x, satisfies max {p_(n+1) - p_n : p_n <= x} <= c1((logx)^2)/loglogx, c1 > 0 constant. Equivalently, it shows that the very short intervals (x, x + y] contain prime numbers for all y > c2((logx)^2)/loglogx, c2 > 0 constant, and sufficiently large x > 0.

Abstract:The Gaussian Moat problem asks whether one can walk to infinity in the Gaussian integers using the Gaussian primes as stepping stones and taking bounded length steps or not. In this paper, we have analyzed the Gaussian primes and also developed an algorithm to find the primes on the $\mathbb{R}^2$ plane which will help us to calculate the moat for higher value. We have also reduced a lot of computation with this algorithm to find the Gaussian prime though their distribution on the $\mathbb{R}^2$ plane is not so regular. A moat of value $\sqrt{26}$ is already an existing result done by Genther <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. The focus of the problem is to show that primes are getting lesser as we are approaching infinity. We have shown this result with the help of our algorithm. We have calculated the moat and also calculated the time complexity of our algorithm and compared it with Genther-Wagon-Wick's algorithm. As a new ingredient, we have defined the notion of primality for the plane $\mathbb{R}^3$ and proposed a problem on it.

Abstract:We show that there exists some $\delta > 0$ such that, for any set of integers $B$ with $B\cap[1,Y]\gg Y^{1-\delta}$ for all $Y \gg 1$, there are infinitely many primes of the form $a^2+b^2$ with $b\in B$. We prove a quasi-explicit formula for the number of primes of the form $a^2+b^2 \leq X$ with $b \in B$ for any $|B|=X^{1/2-\delta}$ with $\delta < 1/10$ and $B \subseteq [\eta X^{1/2},(1-\eta)X^{1/2}] \cap \mathbb{Z}$, in terms of zeros of Hecke $L$-functions on $\mathbb{Q}(i)$. We obtain the expected asymptotic formula for the number of such primes provided that the set $B$ does not have a large subset which consists of multiples of a fixed large integer. In particular, we get an asymptotic formula if $B$ is a sparse subset of primes. For an arbitrary $B$ we obtain a lower bound for the number of primes with a weaker range for $\delta$, by bounding the contribution from potential exceptional characters.

Abstract:Let $p_{n}$ denote the $n$th prime and for any fixed positive integer $k$ and $X\geq 2$, put \[ G_{k}(X):=\max _{p _{n+k}\leq X} \min \{ p_{n+1}-p_{n}, \ldots , p_{n+k}-p_{n+k-1} \}. \] Ford, Maynard and Tao proved that there exists an effective absolute constant $c_{LG}>0$ such that \[ G_{k}(X)\geq \frac{c_{LG}}{k^{2}}\frac{\log X \log \log X \log \log \log \log X}{\log \log \log X} \] holds for any sufficiently large $X$. The main purpose of this paper is to determine the constant $c_{LG}$ above. We see that $c_{LG}$ is determined by several factors related to analytic number theory, for example, the ratio of integrals of functions in the multidimensional sieve of Maynard, the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions to large moduli, and the coefficient of upper bound sieve of Selberg. We prove that the above inequality is valid at least for $c_{LG}\approx 2.0\times 10^{-17}$.

Abstract:The structure of the group (ℤ/nℤ)* and Fermat’s little theorem are the basis for some of the best-known primality testing algorithms. Many related concepts arise: Euler’s totient function and Carmichael’s lambda function, Fermat pseudoprimes, Carmichael and cyclic numbers, Lehmer’s totient problem, Giuga’s conjecture, etc. In this paper, we present and study analogues to some of the previous concepts arising when we consider the underlying group Gn:= {a + bi ∈ ℤ[i]/nℤ[i]: a2 + b2 ≡ 1 (mod n)}. In particular, we characterize Gaussian Carmichael numbers via a Korselt’s criterion and present their relation with Gaussian cyclic numbers. Finally, we present the relation between Gaussian Carmichael number and 1-Williams numbers for numbers n ≡ 3 (mod 4). There are also no known composite numbers less than 1018 in this family that are both pseudoprime to base 1 + 2i and 2-pseudoprime.

Abstract:In a recent joint work with D.A. Goldston and C.Y. Yildirim we just missed by a hairbreadth a proof that bounded gaps between primes occur infinitely often. In the present work it is shown that adding to the primes a much thinner set, called almost prime powers, the union of the set of primes and almost prime powers contains already infinitely many bounded gaps. More precisely it is shown that if we add to the set of primes either almost prime squares having exactly two, nearly equal prime factors or if we add to the set of primes almost prime cubes having exactly three, nearly equal prime factors, then the resulting set contains already infinitely many bounded gaps.

Abstract:Baker, Harman, and Pintz showed that a weak form of the Prime Number Theorem holds in intervals of the form [x-x0.525,x]$$[x-x^{0.525},x]$$ for large x. In this paper, we extend a result of Maynard and Tao concerning small gaps between primes to intervals of this length. More precisely, we prove that for any δ∈[0.525,1]$$\delta \in [0.525,1]$$ there exist positive integers k, d such that for sufficiently large x, the interval [x-xδ,x]$$[x-x^\delta ,x]$$ contains ≫kxδ(logx)k$$\gg _{k} \frac{x^\delta }{(\log x)^k}$$ pairs of consecutive primes differing by at most d. This confirms a speculation of Maynard that results on small gaps between primes can be refined to the setting of short intervals of this length.

Abstract:We generalise Zhang's and Pintz recent results on bounded prime gaps to give a lower bound for the the number of prime pairs bounded by 6*10^7 in the short interval $[x,x+x (\log x)^{-A}]$. Our result follows only by analysing Zhang's proof of Theorem 1, but we also explain how a sharper variant of Zhang's Theorem 2 would imply the same result for shorter intervals.

Abstract:Combining the Hardy-Littlewood k-tuple conjecture with a heuristic application of extreme-value statistics, we propose a family of estimator formulas for predicting maximal gaps between prime k-tuples. Computations show that the estimator a(log(x/a)-b) satisfactorily predicts the maximal gaps below x, where a is the expected average gap between the same type of k-tuples, a=O(log^k x). Heuristics suggest that maximal gaps between prime k-tuples near x are approximately a*log(x/a), and thus have the order O(log^{k+1}x). The distribution of maximal gaps around the trend curve a*log(x/a) is close to the Gumbel distribution. We explore two implications of this model of gaps: record gaps between primes and Legendre-type conjectures for prime k-tuples.

Abstract:We derive a refined conjecture for the variance of Gaussian primes across sectors, with a power saving error term, by applying the <i>L</i>-functions Ratios Conjecture. We observe a bifurcation point in the main term, consistent with the Random Matrix Theory (RMT) heuristic previously proposed by Rudnick and Waxman. Our model also identifies a second bifurcation point, undetected by the RMT model, that emerges upon taking into account lower order terms. For sufficiently small sectors, we moreover prove an unconditional result that is consistent with our conjecture down to lower order terms.

Abstract:Suppose that $n$ is $0$ or $4$ modulo $6$. We show that there are infinitely many primes of the form $p^2 + nq^2$ with both $p$ and $q$ prime, and obtain an asymptotic for their number. In particular, when $n = 4$ we verify the `Gaussian primes conjecture' of Friedlander and Iwaniec. We study the problem using the method of Type I/II sums in the number field $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. The main innovation is in the treatment of the Type II sums, where we make heavy use of two recent developments in the theory of Gowers norms in additive combinatorics: quantitative versions of so-called concatenation theorems, due to Kuca and to Kuca--Kravitz-Leng, and the quasipolynomial inverse theorem of Leng, Sah and the second author.

Abstract:Based on the primes less than 4×1018 , Oliveira e Silva et al. ( Math. Comp. , 83(288):2033–2060, 2014) conjectured an asymptotic formula for the sum of the k th power of the gaps between consecutive primes less than a large number x . We show that the conjecture of Oliveira e Silva holds if and only if the k th moment of the first n gaps is asymptotic to the k th moment of an exponential distribution with mean log n , though the distribution of gaps is not exponential. Asymptotically exponential moments imply that the gaps asymptotically obey Taylor's law of fluctuation scaling: variance of the first n gaps ∼ (mean of the first n gaps) 2 . If the distribution of the first n gaps is asymptotically exponential with mean log n , then the expectation of the largest of the first n gaps is asymptotic to ( log n)2 . The largest of the first n gaps is asymptotic to ( log n)2 if and only if the Cramér-Shanks conjecture holds. Numerical counts of gaps and the maximal gap G n among the first n gaps test these results. While most values of G n are better approximated by ( log n)2 than by other models, seven exceptional values of n with Gn>2e−γ( log n)2 suggest that lim supn→∞Gn/[2e−γ( log n)2] may exceed 1.

Abstract:Given natural numbers $n$ and $k$, with $n>k$, the Prouhet-Tarry-Escott (PTE) problem asks for distinct subsets of $\Z$, say $X=\{x_1,...,x_n\}$ and $Y=\{y_1,...,y_n\}$, such that \[x_1^i+...+x_n^i=y_1^i+...+y_n^i\] for $i=1,...,k$. Many partial solutions to this problem were found in the late 19th century and early 20th century. When $n=k-1$, we call a solution $X=_{n-1}Y$ ideal. This is considered to be the most interesting case. Ideal solutions have been found using elementary methods, elliptic curves, and computational techniques. In 2007, Alpers and Tijdeman gave examples of solutions to the PTE problem over the Gaussian integers. This paper extends the framework of the problem to this setting. We prove generalizations of results from the literature, and use this information along with computational techniques to find ideal solutions to the PTE problem in the Gaussian integers.

Abstract:We study analogies between the rational integers on the real line and the Gaussian integers on other lines in the complex plane. This includes a Gaussian analog of Bertrands Postulate, the Chinese Remainder Theorem, and the periodicity of divisibility. We also computationally investigate the distribution of Gaussian primes along these lines and leave the reader with several open problems.

Abstract:In 1999, Balog, Brüdern, and Wooley (1999) showed there are infinitely many prime gaps $p-q$ that are $(\log p)^{\frac{3}{4}}$-smooth, and infinitely many consecutive prime gaps that are $(\log p)^\frac{7}{8}$-smooth. Advancements made since then by Zhang (2014), Maynard (2014), and Polymath8b (2014) towards resolving the twin prime conjecture have given us the tools to lower the bounds made by Balog, Brüdern, and Wooley to 47. Moreover, we can show there are infinitely many $m$-tuples of primes whose gaps are all $y_m$-smooth for a calculable prime $y_m$.
