Abstract:The book chapter will aim at introducing the background knowledge, basic theories, supporting techniques, numerical results, and future research for the high-order symplectic finite-difference time-domain scheme. The theories of symplectic geometry and Hamiltonian are reviewed in Section 2 followed by the symplectiness of Maxwell's equations presented in Section 3. Next, the numerical stability and dispersion analyses are given in Section 4. Then, in Section 5, we will make a tour of the supporting techniques but do not discuss them in detail. These techniques involve source excitation, perfectly matched layer, near-to-far-field transformation, inhomogeneous boundary treatments, and parameter extractions. The numerical results on propagation, scattering, and guided-wave problems are shown in Section 6. The high-order symplectic finite-difference time-domain scheme demonstrates the powerful advantages and potentials for the time-domain solution of Maxwell's equations, especially for electrically-large objects and for long-term simulation. Finally, the conclusion and future research are summarized in Section 7.

Abstract:Generalizing local Gromov-Witten theory, in this paper we define a local version of symplectic field theory. When the symplectic manifold with cylindrical ends is four-dimensional and the underlying simple curve is regular by automatic transversality, we establish a transversality result for all its multiple covers and discuss the resulting algebraic structures.

Abstract:The mathematical theory underlying Hamiltonian mechanics is called symplectic geometry. So symplectic geometry arose from the roots of mechanics and is seen as one of the most valuable links between physics and mathematics today. Symplectic geometry in its simplest possible case is the geometry of the plane. Surprise is, we can hardly find relevant publications regarding that simple 2D case. Primary goal of this paper is to discuss the suitability of symplectic geometry in the plane for solving standard geometric and mechanical problems in physics and engineering education.

Abstract:Many interesting physical systems have mathematical descriptions as finite-dimensional or infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Poincare who started the modern theory of dynamical systems and symplectic geometry developed a particular viewpoint combining geometric and dynamical systems ideas in the study of Hamiltonian systems. After Poincare the field of dynamical systems and the field of symplectic geometry developed separately. Both fields have rich theories and the time seems ripe to develop the common core with highly integrated ideas from both fields. We discuss problems which show how dynamical systems questions and symplectic ideas come together in a nontrivial way.

Symplectic fermions in general domains

Abstract:In this note, we construct a logarithmic conformal field theory in general domains of the complex plane. The theory of interest is the symplectic fermions because of its links to models of statistical mechanics. We provide an explicit construction of its space of fields as a logarithmic Fock space, and discuss its logarithmic structure as a representation of the Virasoro algebra at $c=-2$. The correlation functions of the theory are explicitly constructed following the ideas of the conformal bootstrap.

Abstract:This work provides a general overview for the treatment of symmetries in classical field theories and (pre)multisymplectic geometry. The geometric characteristics of the relation between how symmetries are interpreted in theoretical physics and in the geometric formulation of these theories are clarified. Finally, a general discussion is given on the structure of symmetries in the presence of constraints appearing in singular field theories. Symmetries of some typical theories in theoretical physics are analyzed through the construction of the relevant multimomentum maps which are the conserved quantities (by Noether's theorem) on the (pre)multisymplectic phase spaces.

Abstract:Results on symplectic spinors and their higher spin versions, concerning representation theory and cohomology properties are presented. Exterior forms with values in the symplectic spinors are decomposed into irreducible modules including finding the hidden symmetry (Schur--Weyl--Howe type duality) given by a representation of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ in this case. We also determine ranges of the induced exterior symplectic spinor derivatives when they are restricted to bundles induced by the irreducible submodules mentioned. This duality is used to decompose curvature tensors of covariant derivatives induced by a Fedosov connection to a symplectic spinor bundle, for characterizing a subcomplex of the de Rham complex twisted by the spinors and for proving that the complex is of elliptic type. Part of the dual is used to characterize Fedosov manifolds admitting symplectic Killing spinors and for relating the spectra of the symplectic Rarita--Schwinger and the symplectic Dirac operator of Habermann. Further, we use the Fomenko--Mishchenko generalization of the Atiyah--Singer index theorem to prove a kind of Hodge theory is valid for elliptic complexes with differentials on projective and finitely generated bundles over the algebra of compact operators and certain further ones.

Abstract:There have been several attempts in recent years to extend the notions of symplectic and Poisson structures in order to create a suitable geometrical framework for classical field theories, trying to achieve a success similar to the use of these concepts in Hamiltonian mechanics. These notions always have a graded character, since the multisymplectic forms are of a higher degree than two. Another line of work has been to extend the concept of Dirac structures to these new scenarios. In the present paper we review all these notions, relate them and propose and study a generalization that (under some mild regularity conditions) includes them and is of graded nature. We expect this generalization to allow us to advance in the study of classical field theories, their integrability, reduction, numerical approximations and even their quantization.

Abstract: In this article, we initiate a geometric measure theoretic approach to symplectic Hodge theory. In particular, we apply one of the central results in geometric measure theory, the Federer-Fleming deformation theorem, together with the cohomology theory of normal cur- rents on a differential manifold, to establish a fundamental property on symplectic Harmonic forms. We show that on a closed symplectic manifold, every real primitive cohomology class of positive degrees admits a symplectic Harmonic representative not supported on the entire mani- fold. As an application, we use it to investigate the support of symplectic Harmonic representatives of Thom classes, and give a complete solution to an open question asked by Guillemin.

Abstract:In symplectic field theory (SFT), the moduli spaces of $J$-holomorphic curves can be oriented coherently (compatible with gluing). In this note, we correct the signs involved in the generating function $\mathbf H$ in SFT so that the master equation $\mathbf H \cdot \mathbf H = 0$ holds assuming transversality. The orientation convention that we use is consistent with that of Hutchings-Taubes from [HT09].

Abstract:Symplectic and Poisson geometry emerged as a tool to understand the mathematical structure behind classical mechanics. However, due to its huge development over the past century, it has become an independent field of research in differential geometry. In this lecture notes, we will introduce the essential objects and techniques in symplectic geometry (e.g Darboux coordinates, Lagrangian submanifolds, cotangent bundles) and Poisson geometry (e.g symplectic foliations, some examples of Poisson structures). This geometric approach will be motivated by examples from classical physics, and at the end we will explore applications of symplectic and Poisson geometry to Lie theory and other fields of mathematical physics.

Field Theory via Higher Geometry I: Smooth Sets of Fields

Abstract:The physical world is fundamentally: (1) field-theoretic, (2) smooth, (3) local, (4) gauged, (5) containing fermions, and last but not least: (6) non-perturbative. Tautologous as this may sound, it is remarkable that the mathematical notion of geometry which reflects all of these aspects -- namely, as we will explain: "supergeometric homotopy theory" -- has received little attention even by mathematicians and remains unknown to most physicists. Elaborate algebraic machinery is known for perturbative field theories, but in order to tackle the deep open questions of the subject, these will need to be lifted to a global geometry of physics. Our aim in this series is, first, to introduce inclined physicists to this theory, second to fill mathematical gaps in the existing literature, and finally to rigorously develop the full power of supergeometric homotopy theory and apply it to the analysis of fermionic (not necessarily super-symmetric) field theories. To warm up, in this first part we explain how classical bosonic Lagrangian field theory (variational Euler-Lagrange theory) finds a natural home in the "topos of smooth sets", thereby neatly setting the scene for the higher supergeometry discussed in later parts of the series. This introductory material will be largely known to a few experts but has never been comprehensively laid out before. A key technical point we make is to regard jet bundle geometry systematically in smooth sets instead of just its subcategories of diffeological spaces or even Fréchet manifolds -- or worse simply as a formal object. Besides being more transparent and powerful, it is only on this backdrop that a reasonable supergeometric jet geometry exists, needed for satisfactory discussion of any field theory with fermions.

Abstract:A Lagrangian field on a symplectic manifold $M$ is a family $\Lambda=\{\Lambda_x|x \in M\}$ of pointed Lagrangian submanifolds of $M$. This notion is a generalization of a real Lagrangian polarization for which each $\Lambda_x$ is the leaf containing $x$. Two Lagrangian fields $\Lambda$ and $\tilde \Lambda$ are called transversal if $\Lambda_x$ intersects $\tilde\Lambda_x$ transversally at $x$ for every $x$. Two transversal Lagrangian fields determine an almost para-Kähler structure on $M$. We construct a local symplectic groupoid on a neighborhood of the zero section of $T^\ast M$ from two transversal Lagrangian fields on $M$. The Lagrangian manifold of $n$-cycles of this groupoid in $(T^\ast M)^n$ has a generating function whose germ around the diagonal of $M^n$ is given by the $n$-point cyclic Calabi function of a closed (1,1)-form on a neighborhood of the diagonal of $M^2$ obtained from the symplectic form on $M$.

Abstract:A taming symplectic structure provides an upper bound on the area of an approximately pseudoholomorphic curve in terms of its homology class. We prove that, conversely, an almost complex manifold with such an area bound admits a taming symplectic structure. This confirms a speculation by Gromov. We also characterize the cone of taming symplectic structures numerically, prove that complex 2-cycles can be approximated by coarsely holomorphic curves, and provide a lower energy bound for such curves.

Abstract:This is an invited contribution to the 2nd edition of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, that provides a very short survey of derived symplectic geometry. Derived symplectic geometry studies symplectic structures on derived stacks. Derived stacks are the main players in derived geometry, the purpose of which is to deal with singular spaces, while symplectic structures are an essential ingredient of the geometric formalism of classical mechanics and classical field theory. In addition to providing an overview of a relatively young field of research, we provide a case study on Casson's invariant.
