Abstract:Generalizing local Gromov-Witten theory, in this paper we define a local version of symplectic field theory. When the symplectic manifold with cylindrical ends is four-dimensional and the underlying simple curve is regular by automatic transversality, we establish a transversality result for all its multiple covers and discuss the resulting algebraic structures.

Abstract:We study 1-parameter families of holomorphic curves with Lagrangian boundary in Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We show that the expected codimension-1 phenomena can be organized to match the HOMFLYPT skein relations from quantum topology. It follows that counting holomorphic curves by the class of their boundaries in the skein module of the Lagrangian gives a deformation invariant result. This is a mathematically rigorous incarnation of Witten's assertion that boundaries of open topological strings create line defects in Chern-Simons theory. Using this theory, we rigorously establish the following prediction of Ooguri and Vafa: the coefficients of the HOMFLYPT polynomial of a link in the three-sphere count the holomorphic curves in the resolved conifold, with boundary on (a pushoff of) the link conormal.

Abstract:A Lagrangian field on a symplectic manifold $M$ is a family $\Lambda=\{\Lambda_x|x \in M\}$ of pointed Lagrangian submanifolds of $M$. This notion is a generalization of a real Lagrangian polarization for which each $\Lambda_x$ is the leaf containing $x$. Two Lagrangian fields $\Lambda$ and $\tilde \Lambda$ are called transversal if $\Lambda_x$ intersects $\tilde\Lambda_x$ transversally at $x$ for every $x$. Two transversal Lagrangian fields determine an almost para-Kähler structure on $M$. We construct a local symplectic groupoid on a neighborhood of the zero section of $T^\ast M$ from two transversal Lagrangian fields on $M$. The Lagrangian manifold of $n$-cycles of this groupoid in $(T^\ast M)^n$ has a generating function whose germ around the diagonal of $M^n$ is given by the $n$-point cyclic Calabi function of a closed (1,1)-form on a neighborhood of the diagonal of $M^2$ obtained from the symplectic form on $M$.

Abstract:A taming symplectic structure provides an upper bound on the area of an approximately pseudoholomorphic curve in terms of its homology class. We prove that, conversely, an almost complex manifold with such an area bound admits a taming symplectic structure. This confirms a speculation by Gromov. We also characterize the cone of taming symplectic structures numerically, prove that complex 2-cycles can be approximated by coarsely holomorphic curves, and provide a lower energy bound for such curves.

Abstract:A closed string worldsheet of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures can be presented as a contact interaction in which $n$ semi-infinite cylinders are glued together in a specific way via the Strebel differential on it, if $n\geq1,\ 2g-2+n>0$. We construct a string field theory of closed strings such that all the Feynman diagrams are represented by such contact interactions. In order to do so, we define off-shell amplitudes in the underlying string theory using the combinatorial Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates to describe the moduli space and derive a recursion relation satisfied by them. Utilizing the Fokker-Planck formalism, we construct a string field theory from which the recursion relation can be deduced through the Schwinger-Dyson equation. The Fokker-Planck Hamiltonian consists of kinetic terms and three string interaction terms.

From quantum curves to topological string partition functions II

Abstract:We propose a geometric characterisation of the topological string partition functions associated to the local Calabi-Yau (CY) manifolds used in the geometric engineering of $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric field theories of class $\mathcal{S}$. A quantisation of these CY manifolds defines differential operators called quantum curves. The partition functions are extracted from the isomonodromic tau-functions associated to the quantum curves by expansions of generalised theta series type. It turns out that the partition functions are in one-to-one correspondence with preferred coordinates on the moduli spaces of quantum curves defined using the Exact WKB method. The coordinates defined in this way jump across certain loci in the moduli space. The changes of normalisation of the tau-functions associated to these jumps define a natural line bundle playing a key role in the geometric characterisation of the topological string partition functions proposed here.

Abstract:We study two related invariants of Lagrangian submanifolds in symplectic manifolds. For a Lagrangian torus these invariants are functions on the first cohomology of the torus. The first invariant is of topological nature and is related to the study of Lagrangian isotopies with a given Lagrangian flux. More specifically, it measures the length of straight paths in the first cohomology that can be realized as the Lagrangian flux of a Lagrangian isotopy. The second invariant is of analytical nature and comes from symplectic function theory. It is defined for Lagrangian submanifolds admitting fibrations over a circle and has a dynamical interpretation. We partially compute these invariants for certain Lagrangian tori.

Symmetries in the Hamiltonian formulation of string theory

Abstract:In the context of the Hamiltonian formulation of string theory, a widely acknowledged issue is the inability of the first-class constraints to accurately reproduce the Lagrangian symmetry transformations. We take a critical look at the Hamiltonian formulation of the Polyakov string and demonstrate, using Castellani's procedure, that diffeomorphism and Weyl symmetries naturally emerge without using any field-dependent reparametrization, thus preserving the theoretical consistency between Hamiltonian and Lagrangian descriptions. Additionally, we will review the standard Hamiltonian analysis of the symmetries in terms of lapse and shift functions and show that the reason behind this failure is not due to the non-canonicity of the variables but rather because this parametrization fails to preserve general covariance.

Geometric Topology

Abstract:This paper is an exposition of the new subject of String Topology. We present an introduction to this exciting new area, as well as a survey of some of the latest developments, and our views about future directions of research. We begin with reviewing the seminal paper of Chas and Sullivan, which started String Topology by introducing a BV-algebra structure on the homology of a loop space of a manifold, then discuss the homotopy theoretic approach to String Topology, using the Thom-Pontrjagin construction, the cacti operad, and fat graphs. We review quantum field theories and indicate how string topology fits into the general picture. Other topics include an open-closed version of string topology, a Morse theoretic interpretation, relation to Gromov-Witten invariants, and "brane'' topology, which deals with sphere spaces. The paper is a joint account of the lecture series given by each of us at the 2003 Summer School on String Topology and Hochschild Homology in Almeria, Spain.

Relations with conformal field theory, topological field theory and topological gravity are studied. For each field theory, an algebraic counterpart, the (homotopy) algebra satisfied by the tree level correlators, is constructed.

Abstract:We provide a string theory embedding for $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 superconformal field theories defined by bipartite graphs inscribed on a disk. We realize these theories by exploiting the close connection with related $ \mathcal{N} $ = 2 generalized (A k−1 , A n−1) Argyres-Douglas theories. The $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 theory is obtained from spacetime filling D5-branes wrapped on an algebraic curve and NS5-branes wrapped on special Lagrangians of $ {{\mathbb{C}}^2} $ which intersect along the BPS flow lines of the corresponding $ \mathcal{N} $ = 2 Argyres-Douglas theory. Dualities of the $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 field theory follow from geometric deformations of the brane configuration which leave the UV boundary conditions fixed. In particular we show how to recover the classification of IR fixed points from cells of the totally non-negative Grassmannian $ \mathrm{Gr}_{k,n+k}^{\mathrm{tnn}} $. Additionally, we present evidence that in the 3D theory obtained from dimensional reduction on a circle, VEVs of line operators given by D3-branes wrapped over faces of the bipartite graph specify a coordinate system for $ \mathrm{Gr}_{k,n+k}^{\mathrm{tnn}} $.

Abstract:This thesis presents several new insights on the interface between mathematics and theoretical physics, with a central role for fermions on Riemann surfaces. First of all, the duality between Vafa-Witten theory and WZW models is embedded into string theory. Secondly, this model is generalized to a web of dualities connecting topological string theory and N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories to a configuration of D-branes that intersect over a Riemann surface. This description yields a new perspective on topological string theory in terms of a KP integrable system based on a quantum curve. Thirdly, this thesis describes a geometric analysis of wall-crossing in N=4 string theory. And lastly, it offers a novel approach to construct metastable vacua in type IIB string theory.

Abstract:The symposium held in honour of the 60th birthday of Graeme Segal brought together leading physicists and mathematicians. Its topics were centred around string theory, M-theory, and quantum gravity on the one hand, and K-theory, elliptic cohomology, quantum cohomology and string topology on the other. Geometry and quantum physics developed in parallel since the recognition of the central role of non-abelian gauge theory in elementary particle physics in the late seventies and the emerging study of super-symmetry and string theory. With its selection of survey and research articles these proceedings fulfil the dual role of reporting on developments in the field and defining directions for future research. For the first time Graeme Segal's manuscript 'The definition of Conformal Field Theory' is published, which has been greatly influential over more than ten years. An introduction by the author puts it into the present context.

Abstract:We construct chain-level $S^1$-equivariant string topology for each simply connected closed manifold. This amounts to constructing a Maurer-Cartan element for the canonical involutive Lie bialgebra (IBL) structure on the dual cyclic bar complex of its de Rham cohomology which is unique up to ${\rm IBL}_\infty$ gauge equivalence. The construction involves integrals over configuration spaces associated to trivalent ribbon graphs, which can be seen as a version of perturbative Chern-Simons theory in arbitrary dimension.

Abstract:Topological invariants such as winding numbers and linking numbers appear as charges of topological solitons in diverse nonlinear physical systems described by a unit vector field defined on two and three dimensional manifolds. While the Gauss-Bonnet theorem shows that the Euler characteristic (a topological invariant) can be written as the integral of the Gaussian curvature (an intrinsic geometric quantity), the intriguing question of whether winding and linking numbers can also be expressed similarly as integrals of some intrinsic geometric quantities has not been addressed in the literature. In this paper we provide the answer by showing that for the winding number in two dimensions, these quantities are torsions of the two evolving space curves describing the manifold. On the other hand, in three dimensions we find that in addition to torsions, intrinsic twists of the space curves are necessary to obtain a nontrivial winding number and linking number. These new results arise from the hitherto unknown connections that we establish between these topological invariants and the corresponding appropriately normalized global anholonomies (i.e., geometric phases) associated with the unit vector fields on the respective manifolds. An application of our results to a 3D Heisenberg ferromagnetic model supporting a topological soliton is also presented.

Symplectic structures on the space of space curves

Abstract:We present symplectic structures on the shape space of unparameterized space curves that generalize the classical Marsden-Weinstein structure. Our method integrates the Liouville 1-form of the Marsden-Weinstein structure with Riemannian structures that have been introduced in mathematical shape analysis. We also derive Hamiltonian vector fields for several classical Hamiltonian functions with respect to these new symplectic structures.

Abstract:We revisit the 3d ${\cal N}=5$ Chern-Simons-Matter theory with orthosymplectic gauge group and its gravity dual from the perspective of generalized symmetries. We derive the corresponding 4d symmetry topological field theory from the gravity dual and relate the allowed boundary conditions to the different variants of the 3d theory. Concentrating on a specific variant that has a discrete non-abelian global symmetry, we explain how the structure of this symmetry arises from brane dynamics.

Abstract:The topological string captures certain superstring amplitudes which are also encoded in the underlying string effective action. However, unlike the topological string free energy, the effective action that comprises higher-order derivative couplings is not defined in terms of duality covariant variables. This puzzle is resolved in the context of real special geometry by introducing the so-called Hesse potential, which is defined in terms of duality covariant variables and is related by a Legendre transformation to the function that encodes the effective action. It is demonstrated that the Hesse potential contains a unique subsector that possesses all the characteristic properties of a topological string free energy. Genus $g\leq3$ contributions are constructed explicitly for a general class of effective actions associated with a special-Kähler target space and are shown to satisfy the holomorphic anomaly equation of perturbative type-II topological string theory. This identification of a topological string free energy from an effective action is primarily based on conceptual arguments and does not involve any of its more specific properties. It is fully consistent with known results. A general theorem is presented that captures some characteristic features of the equivalence, which demonstrates at the same time that non-holomorphic deformations of special geometry can be dealt with consistently.
