Abstract:Polyfold theory was developed by Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder by finding commonalities in the analytic framework for a variety of geometric elliptic PDEs, in particular moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves. It aims to systematically address the common difficulties of compactification and transversality with a new notion of smoothness on Banach spaces, new local models for differential geometry, and a nonlinear Fredholm theory in the new context. We shine meta-mathematical light on the bigger picture and core ideas of this theory. In addition, we compiled and condensed the core definitions and theorems of polyfold theory into a streamlined exposition, and outline their application at the example of Morse theory.

Abstract:Work of Hofer--Wysocki--Zehnder has shown that many spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves that arise when studying symplectic manifolds may be described as the zero set of a polyfold Fredholm section. This framework has many analytic advantages. However the methods they develop to extract useful topological information from it are rather cumbersome. This paper develops a general construction of a finite dimensional space of multivalued perturbations of a polyfold Fredholm section such that almost all elements are regularizing. These perturbation are globally structured and explicitly described, and, in cases where the moduli space has no formal boundary, permit a transparent definition of its (rational Cech) fundamental class.

Abstract:This text is an expanded version of the lectures delivered by the authors at the CIME summer school “Symplectic 4-manifolds and algebraic surfaces,” Cetraro (Italy), September 2–10, 2003. The aim of these lectures were mostly to introduce graduate students to pseudo-holomorphic techniques for the study of isotopy of symplectic submanifolds in dimension four. We tried to keep the style of the lectures by emphasizing the basic reasons for the correctness of a result rather than by providing full details. Essentially none of the content claims any originality, but most of the results are scattered in the literature in sometimes hard-to-read locations. For example, we give a hands-on proof of the smooth parametrization of the space of holomorphic cycles on a complex surface under some positivity assumption. This is usually derived by the big machinery of deformation theory together with Banach-analytic methods. For an uninitiated person it is hard not only to follow the formal arguments needed to deduce the result from places in the literature, but also, and maybe more importantly, to understand whyit is true. While our treatment here has the disadvantage to consider only a particular situation that does not even quite suffice for the proof of the Main Theorem (Theorem 9.1) we hope that it is useful for enhancing the understanding of this result outside the community of hardcore complex analysts and algebraic geometers. The last section discusses the proof of the main theorem, which is also the main result from [SiTi3]. The logic of this proof is a bit difficult, involving several reduction steps and two inductions, and we are not sure if the current presentation really helps in understanding what is going on. Maybe somebody else has to take this up again and add new ideas into streamlining this piece. Finally there is one section on the application to symplectic Lefschetz fibrations. This makes the link to the other lectures of the summer school, notably to those by Auroux and Smith.
Geometry of symplectic flux and Lagrangian torus fibrations

Abstract:Symplectic flux measures the areas of cylinders swept in the process of a Lagrangian isotopy. We study flux via a numerical invariant of a Lagrangian submanifold that we define using its Fukaya algebra. The main geometric feature of the invariant is its concavity over isotopies with linear flux. We derive constraints on flux, Weinstein neighbourhood embeddings and holomorphic disk potentials for Gelfand-Cetlin fibres of Fano varieties in terms of their polytopes. We also describe the space of fibres of almost toric fibrations on the complex projective plane up to Hamiltonian isotopy, and provide other applications.

Abstract:These are a set of lecture notes on generalized global symmetries in quantum field theory. The focus is on invertible symmetries with a few comments regarding non-invertible symmetries. The main topics covered are the basics of higher-form symmetries and their properties including 't Hooft anomalies, gauging and spontaneous symmetry breaking. We also introduce the useful notion of symmetry topological field theories (SymTFTs). Furthermore, an introduction to higher-group symmetries describing mixings of higher-form symmetries is provided. Some advanced topics covered include the encoding of higher-form symmetries in holography and geometric engineering constructions in string theory. Throughout the text, all concepts are consistently illustrated using gauge theories as examples.

Abstract:Symplectic and Poisson geometry emerged as a tool to understand the mathematical structure behind classical mechanics. However, due to its huge development over the past century, it has become an independent field of research in differential geometry. In this lecture notes, we will introduce the essential objects and techniques in symplectic geometry (e.g Darboux coordinates, Lagrangian submanifolds, cotangent bundles) and Poisson geometry (e.g symplectic foliations, some examples of Poisson structures). This geometric approach will be motivated by examples from classical physics, and at the end we will explore applications of symplectic and Poisson geometry to Lie theory and other fields of mathematical physics.

Abstract:Generalizing local Gromov-Witten theory, in this paper we define a local version of symplectic field theory. When the symplectic manifold with cylindrical ends is four-dimensional and the underlying simple curve is regular by automatic transversality, we establish a transversality result for all its multiple covers and discuss the resulting algebraic structures.

Abstract:We review some links between Lie-theoretic polytopes and field theories in physics, which were proposed in the 1990's. A basic ingredient is the Coxeter Plane, whose relation to integrable systems and the Stokes Phenomenon has only recently come to light. We use this to give a systematic mathematical treatment, which gives further support to the physical proposals. This article is based on a talk which was scheduled to be given at the workshop "Representations of Discrete Groups and Geometric Topology on Manifolds", Josai University, 12-13 March 2020.

Abstract:These lecture notes are devoted to formal and phenomenological aspects of F-theory. We begin with a pedagogical introduction to the general concepts of F-theory, covering classic topics such as the connection to type IIB orientifolds, the geometry of elliptic fibrations and the emergence of gauge groups, matter and Yukawa couplings. As a suitable framework for the construction of compact F-theory vacua we describe a special class of Weierstrass models called Tate models, whose local properties are captured by the spectral cover construction. Armed with this technology we proceed with a survey of F-theory grand unified theory (GUT) models, aiming at an overview of basic conceptual and phenomenological aspects, in particular in connection with GUT breaking via hypercharge flux.

Coherent orientations in symplectic field theory revisited

Abstract:In symplectic field theory (SFT), the moduli spaces of $J$-holomorphic curves can be oriented coherently (compatible with gluing). In this note, we correct the signs involved in the generating function $\mathbf H$ in SFT so that the master equation $\mathbf H \cdot \mathbf H = 0$ holds assuming transversality. The orientation convention that we use is consistent with that of Hutchings-Taubes from [HT09].

Abstract:We describe a very general (nonlinear) Fredholm theory for a new class of ambient spaces, called polyfolds. Abstract: In this article, we initiate a geometric measure theoretic approach to symplectic Hodge theory. In particular, we apply one of the central results in geometric measure theory, the Federer-Fleming deformation theorem, together with the cohomology theory of normal cur- rents on a differential manifold, to establish a fundamental property on symplectic Harmonic forms. We show that on a closed symplectic manifold, every real primitive cohomology class of positive degrees admits a symplectic Harmonic representative not supported on the entire mani- fold. As an application, we use it to investigate the support of symplectic Harmonic representatives of Thom classes, and give a complete solution to an open question asked by Guillemin.

Abstract:This is an elementary set of lectures on generalized global symmetries originally given at the Jena TPI School on QFT and Holography, designed to be accessible to the reader with a basic knowledge of quantum field theory. Topics covered include an introduction to higher-form symmetries with selected applications: Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories in the continuum and on the lattice, statistical mechanical systems, the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly from the point of view of non-invertible symmetry, and magnetohydrodynamics. Mathematical formalism is kept to a minimum and an emphasis is placed on understanding the global symmetry structure present in well-known models.

Abstract:In this lecture note, we give a basic introduction to the rapidly developing concepts of generalized symmetries, from the perspectives of both high energy physics and condensed matter physics. In particular, we emphasize on the (invertible) higher-form and higher group symmetries. For the physical applications, we discuss the geometric engineering of QFTs in string theory and the symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in condensed matter physics. Abstract:Datasets of online communication often take the form of contact sequences -- ordered lists contacts (where a contact is defined as a triple of a sender, a recipient and a time). We propose measures of attractiveness and activity for such data sets and analyze these quantities for anonymized contact sequences from an Internet dating community. For this data set the attractiveness and activity measures show broad power-law like distributions. Our attractiveness and activity measures are more strongly correlated in the real-world data than in our reference model. Effects that indirectly can make active users more attractive are discussed.

Subsystem Symmetry Fractionalization and Foliated Field Theory

Abstract:Topological quantum matter exhibits a range of exotic phenomena when enriched by subdimensional symmetries. This includes new features beyond those that appear in the conventional setting of global symmetry enrichment. A recently discovered example is a type of subsystem symmetry fractionalization that occurs through a different mechanism to global symmetry fractionalization. In this work we extend the study of subsystem symmetry fractionalization through new examples derived from the general principle of embedding subsystem symmetry into higher-form symmetry. This leads to new types of symmetry fractionalization that are described by foliation dependent higher-form symmetries. This leads to field theories and lattice models that support previously unseen anomalous subsystem symmetry fractionalization. Our work expands the range of exotic topological physics that is enabled by subsystem symmetry in field theory and on the lattice.
