Abstract:We show that the group $\langle a,b,c,t : a^t=b,b^t=c,c^t=ca^{-1} \rangle$ is profinitely rigid amongst free-by-cyclic groups, providing the first example of a hyperbolic free-by-cyclic group with this property.

Abstract:We obtain a homological characterisation of virtually free-by-cyclic groups among groups that are hyperbolic and virtually compact special. As a consequence, we show that many groups known to be coherent actually possess the stronger property of being virtually free-by-cyclic. In particular, we show that all one-relator groups with torsion are virtually free-by-cyclic, solving a conjecture of Baumslag.

Abstract:Let $G = H_1 * ... * H_k * F_r$ be a torsion-free group and $\phi$ an automorphism of $G$ that preserves this free factor system. We show that when $\phi$ is fully irreducible and atoroidal relative to this free factor system, the mapping torus $\Gamma = G \rtimes_{\phi} \mathbb{Z}$ acts relatively geometrically on a hyperbolic CAT(0) cube complex. This is a generalisation of a result of Hagen and Wise for hyperbolic free-by-cyclic groups.

Namely, if $\phi_1, \ldots , \phi_k $ is a collection of exponentially growing outer automorphisms with a common invariant \emph{subgroup system} such that any conjugacy class in the complement of this system grows exponentially under iteration by all $\phi_i$, then such a subgroup system can be used to construct a collection of peripheral subgroups relative to which, the extension of $\mathbb F$ by the free group generated by sufficiently high powers of $\phi_1, \ldots , \phi_k $, will be hyperbolic.

Abstract:A free-by-cyclic group $F_N\rtimes_\phi\mathbb{Z}$ has non-trivial centre if and only if $[\phi]$ has finite order in ${\rm{Out}}(F_N)$. We establish a profinite ridigity result for such groups: if $\Gamma_1$ is a free-by-cyclic group with non-trivial centre and $\Gamma_2$ is a finitely generated free-by-cyclic group with the same finite quotients as $\Gamma_1$, then $\Gamma_2$ is isomorphic to $\Gamma_1$. One-relator groups with centre are similarly rigid. We prove that finitely generated free-by-(finite cyclic) groups are profinitely rigid in the same sense; the proof revolves around a finite poset $\mathbf{fsc}(G)$ that carries information about the centralisers of finite subgroups of $G$ -- it is a complete invariant for these groups. These results provide contrasts with the lack of profinite rigidity among surface-by-cyclic groups and (free abelian)-by-cyclic groups, as well as general virtually-free groups.

Abstract:A group $G$ is said to be equationally Noetherian if every system of equations in $G$ is equivalent to a finite subsystem. We show that all free-by-cyclic groups are equationally Noetherian. As a corollary, we deduce that the set of exponential growth rates of a free-by-cyclic group is well ordered. Along the way, we prove that free-by-cyclic groups with polynomially growing monodromies of infinite order admit non-elementary 4-acylindrical actions on trees. We show that the splittings arising from the improved relative train track machinery of Bestvina-Feighn-Handel are 2-acylindrical when the growth is at least quadratic.

Failure of quasi-isometric rigidity for infinite-ended groups

Abstract:We prove that an infinite-ended group whose one-ended factors have finite-index subgroups and are in a family of groups with a nonzero multiplicative invariant is not quasi-isometrically rigid. Combining this result with work of the first author proves that a residually-finite multi-ended hyperbolic group is quasi-isometrically rigid if and only if it is virtually free. The proof adapts an argument of Whyte for commensurability of free products of closed hyperbolic surface groups.

Abstract:Let S be either a free group or the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic surface. We show that if G is a finitely generated residually- p group with the same pro- p completion as S , then two-generated subgroups of G are free. This generalises (and gives a new proof of) the analogous result of Baumslag for parafree groups. Our argument relies on the following new ingredient: if G is a residually-(torsion-free nilpotent) group and is a virtually polycyclic subgroup, then H is nilpotent and the pro- p topology of G induces on H its full pro- p topology. Then we study applications to profinite rigidity. Remeslennikov conjectured that a finitely generated residually finite G with profinite completion is necessarily . We confirm this when G belongs to a class of groups that has a finite abelian hierarchy starting with finitely generated residually free groups. This strengthens a previous result of Wilton that relies on the hyperbolicity assumption. Lastly, we prove that the group is profinitely rigid within finitely generated residually free groups.

Abstract:We prove that the topological complexity of a finite index subgroup of a hyperbolic group is linear in its index. This follows from a more general result relating the size of the quotient of a free cocompact action of hyperbolic group on a graph to the minimal number of cells in a simplicial classifying space for the group. As a corollary we prove that any two isomorphic finite-index subgroups of a non-elementary hyperbolic group have the same index.

Abstract:In this note we show that any homomorphism from a pure surface braid group to a torsion-free hyperbolic group either has a cyclic image or factors through a forgetful map. This extends and gives a new proof of an earlier result of the author which works only when the target is a free group or a surface group. We also prove a similar rigidity result for the pure braid group of the disk.

Abstract:We prove that the Gromov hyperbolic groups obtained by the strict hyperbolization procedure of Charney and Davis are virtually compact special, hence linear and residually finite. Our strategy consists in constructing an action of a hyperbolized group on a certain dual CAT(0) cubical complex. As a result, all the common applications of strict hyperbolization are shown to provide manifolds with virtually compact special fundamental group. In particular, we obtain examples of closed negatively curved Riemannian manifolds whose fundamental groups are linear and virtually algebraically fiber.

Abstract:The main result of this paper is that the outer automorphism group of a free product of finite groups and cyclic groups is semistable at infinity (provided it is one ended) or semistable at each end. In a previous paper, we showed that the group of outer automorphisms of the free product of two nontrivial finite groups with an infinite cyclic group has infinitely many ends, despite being of virtual cohomological dimension two. We also prove that aside from this exception, having virtual cohomological dimension at least two implies the outer automorphism group of a free product of finite and cyclic groups is one ended. As a corollary, the outer automorphism groups of the free product of four finite groups or the free product of a single finite group with a free group of rank two are virtual duality groups of dimension two, in contrast with the above example. Our proof is inspired by methods of Vogtmann, applied to a complex first studied in another guise by Krstić and Vogtmann.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a natural class of groups that act as affine transformations of $${\mathbb {T}}^N$$. We investigate whether these solvable, “abelian-by-cyclic," groups can act smoothly and nonaffinely on $${\mathbb {T}}^N$$ while remaining homotopic to the affine actions. In the affine actions, elliptic and hyperbolic dynamics coexist, forcing a priori complicated dynamics in nonaffine perturbations. We first show, using the KAM method, that any small and sufficiently smooth perturbation of such an affine action can be conjugated smoothly to an affine action, provided certain Diophantine conditions on the action are met. In dimension two, under natural dynamical hypotheses, we get a complete classification of such actions; namely, any such group action by $$C^r$$ diffeomorphisms can be conjugated to the affine action by $$C^{r-\varepsilon }$$ conjugacy. Next, we show that in any dimension, $$C^1$$ small perturbations can be conjugated to an affine action via $$C^{1+\varepsilon }$$ conjugacy. The method is a generalization of the Herman theory for circle diffeomorphisms to higher dimensions in the presence of a foliation structure provided by the hyperbolic dynamics.
