Abstract:We exhibit free-by-cyclic groups containing non-free locally-free subgroups, including some word hyperbolic examples. We also show that these groups are not subgroup separable. We use Bestvina-Brady Morse theory in our arguments.

Abstract:We obtain a homological characterisation of virtually free-by-cyclic groups among groups that are hyperbolic and virtually compact special. As a consequence, we show that many groups known to be coherent actually possess the stronger property of being virtually free-by-cyclic. In particular, we show that all one-relator groups with torsion are virtually free-by-cyclic, solving a conjecture of Baumslag.

Abstract:A group $G$ is said to be equationally Noetherian if every system of equations in $G$ is equivalent to a finite subsystem. We show that all free-by-cyclic groups are equationally Noetherian. As a corollary, we deduce that the set of exponential growth rates of a free-by-cyclic group is well ordered. Along the way, we prove that free-by-cyclic groups with polynomially growing monodromies of infinite order admit non-elementary 4-acylindrical actions on trees. We show that the splittings arising from the improved relative train track machinery of Bestvina-Feighn-Handel are 2-acylindrical when the growth is at least quadratic.

Abstract:We show that a free-by-cyclic group with a polynomially growing monodromy is subgroup separable exactly when it is virtually $F_n \times \mathbb{Z}$. We also prove that random deficiency 1 groups are not subgroup separable with positive asymptotic probability.

Abstract:We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a free-by-free group to be relatively hyperbolic with a cusp-preserving structure. Namely, if $\phi_1, \ldots , \phi_k $ is a collection of exponentially growing outer automorphisms with a common invariant \emph{subgroup system} such that any conjugacy class in the complement of this system grows exponentially under iteration by all $\phi_i$, then such a subgroup system can be used to construct a collection of peripheral subgroups relative to which, the extension of $\mathbb F$ by the free group generated by sufficiently high powers of $\phi_1, \ldots , \phi_k $, will be hyperbolic.

Abstract:We construct a hyperbolic group with a finitely presented subgroup, which has infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements. We also use a version of Morse theory with high dimensional horizontal cells and use handle cancellation arguments to produce other examples of subgroups of CAT(0) groups with infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements.

Abstract:Consider a one-ended word-hyperbolic group. If it is the fundamental group of a graph of free groups with cyclic edge groups then either it is the fundamental group of a surface or it contains a finitely generated one-ended subgroup of infinite index. As a corollary, the same holds for limit groups. We also obtain a characterisation of surfaces with boundary among free groups equipped with peripheral structures.

Abstract:Let $G = H_1 * ... * H_k * F_r$ be a torsion-free group and $\phi$ an automorphism of $G$ that preserves this free factor system. We show that when $\phi$ is fully irreducible and atoroidal relative to this free factor system, the mapping torus $\Gamma = G \rtimes_{\phi} \mathbb{Z}$ acts relatively geometrically on a hyperbolic CAT(0) cube complex. This is a generalisation of a result of Hagen and Wise for hyperbolic free-by-cyclic groups.

Abstract:We initiate the study of torsion-free algebraically hyperbolic groups; these groups generalise torsion-free hyperbolic groups and are intricately related to groups with no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. Indeed, for groups of cohomological dimension $2$ we prove that algebraic hyperbolicity is equivalent to containing no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. This links algebraically hyperbolic groups to two famous questions of Gromov; recent work has shown these questions to have negative answers in general, but they remain open for groups of cohomological dimension $2$. We also prove that algebraically hyperbolic groups are CSA, and so have canonical abelian JSJ-decompositions. In the two-generated case we give a precise description of the form of these decompositions.

On Diamond-Free Subgroup Lattices

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a particular lattice of subgroups called a "cyclic-diamond" and show that every finite non-cyclic group contains a cyclic-diamond as a sublattice of its lattice of subgroups. Turning to the infinite case, we show that an infinite abelian group does not contain a cyclic-diamond in its subgroup lattice if and only if all of its finitely generated subgroups are cyclic or isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}_{2^N}$ for some $N$.

On the Bowditch boundary of a free group with random cyclic peripheral groups

Abstract:The topology of the Bowditch boundary of a relatively hyperbolic group pair gives information about relative splittings of the group. It is therefore interesting to ask if there is generic behavior of this boundary. The purpose of this article is to show that in the case of a non-abelian free group with cyclic peripheral structure, there is not a generic case. This goal is accomplished by showing the minimal size of cut sets in the boundary increases as the lengths of the random words generating the peripheral structure go to infinity.

Abstract:A group G is almost cyclic if there is an element x in G, such that for all g in G, there is an element y in G and an integer n with ygy^{-1} = x^n (that is, every element is conjugate to some power of x). W. Ziller asked whether there are finitely-presented almost cyclic groups which are not cyclic in connection with work on closed geodesics. V. Guba constructed an infinite (non-cyclic) finitely generated almost cyclic group. The principal results of this paper are: Solvable almost cyclic groups are cyclic, and one-relator almost cyclic groups are cyclic.
On the virtually cyclic dimension of normally poly-free groups

Abstract:In this note we give an upper bound for the virtually cyclic dimension of any normally poly-free group in terms of its length. In particular, this implies that virtually even Artin groups of FC-type admit a finite dimensional model for the classifying space with respect to the family of virtually cyclic subgroups.

Abstract:We define analogues of the graphs of free splittings, of cyclic splittings, and of maximally-cyclic splittings of $F_N$ for free products of groups, and show their hyperbolicity. Given a countable group $G$ which splits as $G=G_1\ast\dots\ast G_k\ast F$, where $F$ denotes a finitely generated free group, we identify the Gromov boundary of the graph of relative cyclic splittings with the space of equivalence classes of $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. A tree is \emph{$\mathcal{Z}$-averse} if it is not compatible with any tree $T'$, that is itself compatible with a relative cyclic splitting. Two $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees are \emph{equivalent} if they are both compatible with a common tree in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. We give a similar description of the Gromov boundary of the graph of maximally-cyclic splittings.

Elliptic subgroups in cyclic splittings of a free group

Abstract:We use Gersten's generalization of Whitehead's algorithm to determine whether a given finitely generated subgroup of a free group $F$ is elliptic in an elementary cyclic splitting of $F$. We provide a similar result for all elementary cyclic splittings of a free group of rank two and partial results towards an algorithm for ellipticity in elementary cyclic splittings of $F$ as an HNN-extension.

Abstract:In this note we show that any homomorphism from a pure surface braid group to a torsion-free hyperbolic group either has a cyclic image or factors through a forgetful map. This extends and gives a new proof of an earlier result of the author which works only when the target is a free group or a surface group. We also prove a similar rigidity result for the pure braid group of the disk.

Abstract:We prove that hyperbolic groups with logarithmic separation profiles split over cyclic groups. This shows that such groups can be inductively built from Fuchsian groups and free groups by amalgamations and HNN extensions over finite or virtually cyclic groups. However, we show that not all groups admitting such a hierarchy have logarithmic separation profile by providing an example of a surface amalgam over a cyclic group with superlogarithmic separation profile.
