Abstract:We prove that in the moduli space Md of degree d2 rational maps, any hyperbolic component in the disconnectedness locus and of Cantor circle type is a finite quotient of R4d-4-nxTn, where n is determined by dynamics. The proof uses some ideas from Riemann surface theory (Abel's Theorem), dynamical system and algebraic topology.

Abstract:We give conditions of an extension of a free group to be hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic using the dynamics of the action of $\out$ on the complex of free factors combined with the weak attraction theory. We work with subgroups of exponentially growing outer automorphisms and instead of using a standard pingpong argument with loxodromics, we allow fixed points for the action and investigate the geometry of the extension group when the fixed points of the automorphisms on the complex of free factors are sufficiently far apart.

On the geometry of a proposed curve complex analogue for $Out(F_n)$

Abstract:The group $\Out$ of outer automorphisms of the free group has been an object of active study for many years, yet its geometry is not well understood. Recently, effort has been focused on finding a hyperbolic complex on which $\Out$ acts, in analogy with the curve complex for the mapping class group. Here, we focus on one of these proposed analogues: the edge splitting complex $\ESC$, equivalently known as the separating sphere complex. We characterize geodesic paths in its 1-skeleton algebraically, and use our characterization to find lower bounds on distances between points in this graph. Our distance calculations allow us to find quasiflats of arbitrary dimension in $\ESC$. This shows that $\ESC$: is not hyperbolic, has infinite asymptotic dimension, and is such that every asymptotic cone is infinite dimensional. These quasiflats contain an unbounded orbit of a reducible element of $\Out$. As a consequence, there is no coarsely $\Out$-equivariant quasiisometry between $\ESC$ and other proposed curve complex analogues, including the regular free splitting complex $\FSC$, the (nontrivial intersection) free factorization complex $\FFZC$, and the free factor complex $\FFC$, leaving hope that some of these complexes are hyperbolic.

Abstract:We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a free-by-free group to be relatively hyperbolic with a cusp-preserving structure. Namely, if $\phi_1, \ldots , \phi_k $ is a collection of exponentially growing outer automorphisms with a common invariant \emph{subgroup system} such that any conjugacy class in the complement of this system grows exponentially under iteration by all $\phi_i$, then such a subgroup system can be used to construct a collection of peripheral subgroups relative to which, the extension of $\mathbb F$ by the free group generated by sufficiently high powers of $\phi_1, \ldots , \phi_k $, will be hyperbolic.

Abstract:The free splitting graph of a free group $F_n$ with $n\geq 2$ generators is a hyperbolic ${\rm Out}(F_n)$-graph which has a geometric realization as a sphere graph in the connected sum of $n$ copies of $S^1\times S^2$. We use this realization to construct submanifold projections of the free splitting graph into the free splitting graphs of proper free factors. This is used to construct for $n\geq 3$ a new hyperbolic ${\rm Out}(F_n)$-graph. If $n=3$, then every exponentially growing element acts on this graph with positive translation length.

Abstract:We establish the following non-abelian analogue of the Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry: the natural map from ${\rm{Aut}}(F_n)$ to the automorphism group of the free-factor complex $\mathcal{AF}_n$ is an isomorphism. We also prove the corresponding theorem for the action of ${\rm{Out}}(F_n)$ on the complex of conjugacy classes of free factors.

Abstract:We prove that the Gromov hyperbolic groups obtained by the strict hyperbolization procedure of Charney and Davis are virtually compact special, hence linear and residually finite. Our strategy consists in constructing an action of a hyperbolized group on a certain dual CAT(0) cubical complex. As a result, all the common applications of strict hyperbolization are shown to provide manifolds with virtually compact special fundamental group. In particular, we obtain examples of closed negatively curved Riemannian manifolds whose fundamental groups are linear and virtually algebraically fiber.

Abstract:The complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Gamma=\Delta_{4,\infty,\infty;\infty}$ acting on the complex hyperbolic plane ${\bf H}^2_{\mathbb C}$ is generated by complex reflections $I_1$, $I_2$, $I_3$ such that the product $I_2I_3$ has order four, the products $I_3I_1$, $I_1I_2$ are parabolic and the product $I_1I_3I_2I_3$ is an accidental parabolic element. Unexpectedly, the product $I_1I_2I_3I_2$ is a hidden accidental parabolic element. We show that the 3-manifold at infinity of $\Delta_{4,\infty,\infty;\infty}$ is the complement of the chain link $8^4_1$ in the 3-sphere. In particular, the quartic cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold $S^3-8^4_1$ admits a spherical CR-uniformization. The proof relies on a new technique to show that the ideal boundary of the Ford domain is an infinite-genus handlebody. Motivated by this result and supported by the previous studies of various authors, we conjecture that the chain link $C_p$ is an ancestor of the 3-manifold at infinity of the critical complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta_{p,q,r;\infty}$, for $3 \leq p \leq 9$.

Abstract:Carrier graphs of groups representing subgroups of a given relatively hyperbolic groups are introduced and a combination theorem for relatively quasi-convex subgroups is proven. Subsequently a theory of folds for such carrier graphs is introduced and finiteness results for subgroups of locally relatively quasiconvex relatively hyperbolic groups and Kleinian groups are established.

Abstract:We obtain a homological characterisation of virtually free-by-cyclic groups among groups that are hyperbolic and virtually compact special. As a consequence, we show that many groups known to be coherent actually possess the stronger property of being virtually free-by-cyclic. In particular, we show that all one-relator groups with torsion are virtually free-by-cyclic, solving a conjecture of Baumslag.

Abstract:We give a simple combinatorial criterion, in terms of an action on a hyperbolic simplicial complex, for a group to be hierarchically hyperbolic. We apply this to show that quotients of mapping class groups by large powers of Dehn twists are hierarchically hyperbolic (and even relatively hyperbolic in the genus 2 case). Under residual finiteness assumptions, we construct many non-elementary hyperbolic quotients of mapping class groups. Using these quotients, we reduce questions of Reid and Bridson-Reid-Wilton about finite quotients of mapping class groups to residual finiteness of specific hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:We define analogues of the graphs of free splittings, of cyclic splittings, and of maximally-cyclic splittings of $F_N$ for free products of groups, and show their hyperbolicity. Given a countable group $G$ which splits as $G=G_1\ast\dots\ast G_k\ast F$, where $F$ denotes a finitely generated free group, we identify the Gromov boundary of the graph of relative cyclic splittings with the space of equivalence classes of $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. A tree is \emph{$\mathcal{Z}$-averse} if it is not compatible with any tree $T'$, that is itself compatible with a relative cyclic splitting. Two $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees are \emph{equivalent} if they are both compatible with a common tree in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. We give a similar description of the Gromov boundary of the graph of maximally-cyclic splittings.

Abstract:Let $G = H_1 * ... * H_k * F_r$ be a torsion-free group and $\phi$ an automorphism of $G$ that preserves this free factor system. We show that when $\phi$ is fully irreducible and atoroidal relative to this free factor system, the mapping torus $\Gamma = G \rtimes_{\phi} \mathbb{Z}$ acts relatively geometrically on a hyperbolic CAT(0) cube complex. This is a generalisation of a result of Hagen and Wise for hyperbolic free-by-cyclic groups.

Abstract:Let $\Phi$ be a pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphism of a compact (possibly non-orientable) surface $\Sigma$ with one boundary component. We show that if $b \in \pi_1(\Sigma)$ is the boundary word, $\phi \in {\rm{Aut}}(\pi_1(\Sigma))$ is a representative of $\Phi$ fixing $b$, and ${\rm{ad}}_b$ denotes conjugation by $b$, then the orbits of $\langle \phi, {\rm{ad}}_b \rangle\cong\mathbb{Z}^2$ in the graph of free factors of $\pi_1(\Sigma)$ are quasi-isometrically embedded. It follows that for $N \geq 2$ the free factor graph for ${\rm{Aut}}(F_N)$ is not hyperbolic, in contrast to the ${\rm{Out}}(F_N)$ case.

From pure braid groups to hyperbolic groups

Abstract:In this note we show that any homomorphism from a pure surface braid group to a torsion-free hyperbolic group either has a cyclic image or factors through a forgetful map. This extends and gives a new proof of an earlier result of the author which works only when the target is a free group or a surface group. We also prove a similar rigidity result for the pure braid group of the disk.
