Abstract:In this short note, using a result of Brock-Masur, we show that the genus two separating curve complex is hyperbolic in the sense of Gromov, answering a conjecture of S. Schleimer in the affirmative.

Abstract:Further geometry and topology for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex Grassmannians Gn(CN) are studied. Some curvature pinching theorems for pseudo-holomorphic curves with constant Kahler angles in G(m)(C-N) are obtained, so that the corresponding results for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex projective spaces are generalized.

Abstract:For the genus 1 surface with n punctures F 1, n , we show that the Hatcher–Thurston complex HT(F_1,n) is hyperbolic. For the genus 2 closed surface F 2 , we show that the Hatcher–Thurston complex HT(F_2) is strongly relatively hyperbolic with respect to a family of its subspaces X γ , where γ ranges over all separating curves of F 2 , and each X γ is isometric to the product of two Farey graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:We prove that in the moduli space Md of degree d2 rational maps, any hyperbolic component in the disconnectedness locus and of Cantor circle type is a finite quotient of R4d-4-nxTn, where n is determined by dynamics. The proof uses some ideas from Riemann surface theory (Abel's Theorem), dynamical system and algebraic topology.

Abstract:Let $N$ be a connected finite type nonorientable surface with or without boundary components and punctures. We prove that the graph of nonseparating curves of $N$ is connected and Gromov hyperbolic with a constant which does not depend on the topological type of the surface by using the bicorn curves introduced by Przytycki and Sisto. The proof is based on the argument by Rasmussen on the uniform hyperbolicity of graphs of nonseparating curves for finite type orientable surfaces.

Abstract:The paper is a contribution of the conjecture of Kobayashi that the complement of a generic plain curve of degree at least five is hyperbolic. The main result is that the complement of a generic configuration of three quadrics is hyperbolic and hyperbolically embedded as well as the complement of two quadrics and a line.

Abstract:We prove that the separated curve complex of a closed orientable surface ofgenus g is (g-3)-connected. We also obtain a connectivity property for aseparated curve complex of the open surface that is obtained by removing afinite set from a closed one, but it is then assumed that the removed set isendowed with a partition and that the separating curves respect that partition.These connectivity statements have implications for the algebraic topology ofthe moduli space of curves.

Abstract:We show that for any surface of genus at least 3 equipped with any choice of framing, the graph of non-separating curves with winding number 0 with respect to the framing is hierarchically hyperbolic but not Gromov hyperbolic. We also describe how to build analogues of the curve graph for marked strata of abelian differentials that capture the combinatorics of their boundaries, analogous to how the curve graph captures the combinatorics of the augmented Teichmueller space. These curve graph analogues are also shown to be hierarchically, but not Gromov, hyperbolic.

Abstract:We study the algebraic hyperbolicity of the complement of very general degree $2n$ hypersurfaces in P^n. We prove the Algebraic Green-Griffiths-Lang Conjecture for these complements, and in the case of the complement of a quartic plane curve, we completely characterize the exceptional locus as the union of the flex and bitangent lines.

Abstract:In the present paper, we show a new result on the geometrically $2$-step solvable Grothendieck conjecture for genus $0$ curves over finitely generated fields. More precisely, we show that two genus $0$ hyperbolic curves over a finitely generated field $k$ are isomorphic as $k$-schemes (up to Frobenius twists) if and only if the geometrically maximal $2$-step solvable quotients of their étale fundamental groups are isomorphic as topological groups over the absolute Galois group of $k$.

Abstract:Igusa proved in 1958 that the polynomial determining the supersingularity of elliptic curve in Legendre form is separable. In this paper, we get an analogous result for curves of genus $2$ in Rosenhain form. More precisely we show that the ideal determining the superspeciality of the curve has multiplicity one at every superspecial point. Igusa used a Picard-Fucks differential operator annihilating a Gauß hypergeometric series. We shall use Lauricella system (of type D) of hypergeometric differential equations in three variables.

Abstract:We prove several analogs of Gromov's macroscopic dimension conjecture with extra curvature assumptions. More explicitly, we show that for an open Riemannian $n$-manifold $(M,g)$ of nonnegative Ricci (resp. sectional) curvature, if it has uniformly positive scalar curvature and it is uniformly volume noncollapsed, then the essential (resp. Hausdorff) dimension of an asymptotic cone, as a notion of largeness, has a sharp upper bound $n-2$, which is $2$ less than the upper bound for an open Riemannian manifold with only nonnegative Ricci curvature. As a consequence, the dimension of space of linear growth harmonic functions of $M$ has upper bound $n-1$ which is also $2$ less than the sharp bound $n+1$ when $M$ only has nonnegative Ricci curvature. We also prove the first Betti number upper bound is $n-2$ if $M$ is compact, and $n-3$ if $M$ is non-compact. When $M$ is compact we show a fibration theorem over torus, and a rigidity theorem for the fiber when the first Betti number upper bound is achieved.

Abstract:Browning and Vishe used the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to show the moduli space of rational curves on smooth hypersurfaces of low degree is irreducible and of the expected dimension. We reinterpret the circle method geometrically and prove a generalization for higher genus smooth projective curves. In particular, we explain how the geometry of numbers can be understood via the Beauville-Laszlo theorem in terms of vector bundles on curves and their slopes, allowing us to prove a higher genus variant of Davenport's shrinking lemma. As a corollary, we apply this result to show the Fujita invariant of any proper subvariety of a smooth hypersurface of low degree is less than 1.

Separating semigroup of genus 4 curves

Abstract:A rational function on a real algebraic curve $C$ is called separating if it takes real values only at real points. Such a function defines a covering $\mathbb R C\to\mathbb{RP}^1$. Let $c_1,\dots,c_r$ be connected components of $\mathbb R C$. M. Kummer and K. Shaw defined the separating semigroup of $C$ as the set of all sequences $(d_1(f),\dots,d_r(f))$ where $f$ is a separating function and $d_i(f)$ is the degree of the restriction of $f$ to $c_i$. In the present paper we describe the separating semigroups of all genus 4 curves. For the proofs we consider the canonical embedding of $C$ into a quadric $X$ in $\mathbb P^3$ and apply Abel's theorem to 1-forms obtained as Poincaré residues at $C$ of certain meromorphic 2-forms on $X$.

Abstract:We prove a quantitative closing lemma for the horocycle flow induced by the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-action on the moduli space of Abelian differentials with a double-order zero on surfaces of genus 2. The proof proceeds via construction of a Margulis function measuring the discretized fractal dimension of separation of a horocycle orbit of a point from itself, in a direction transverse to the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit. From this, we deduce that small transversal separation guarantees the existence of a nearby point with a pseudo-Anosov in its Veech group. This is reminiscent of the initial dimension phases in Bourgain-Gamburd for random walks on compact groups, Bourgain-Lindenstrauss-Furman-Mozes for quantitative equidistribution in tori, and quantitative equidistribution of horocycle flow for a product of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ with itself due to Lindenstrauss-Mohammadi-Wang, and multiple other works.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate basic geometric quantities of a random hyperbolic surface of genus g$g$ with respect to the Weil-Petersson measure on the moduli space Mg$\mathcal {M}_g$. We show that as g$g$ goes to infinity, a generic surface X is an element of Mg$X\in \mathcal {M}_g$ satisfies asymptotically: the separating systole of X$X$ is approximately 2logg;$2\log g\hbox{\it ;}$there is a half-collar of width approximately logg2$\frac{\log g}{2}$ around any separating systolic curve on X;$X\hbox{\it ;}$the length of the shortest separating closed multi-geodesics on X$X$ is approximately 2logg$2\log g$.(1)(2)(3)As applications, we also discuss the asymptotic behavior of the extremal separating systole, the non-simple systole, and the expected length of the shortest separating closed multi-geodesics as g$g$ goes to infinity.

Abstract:In this paper we begin to study curves on a weighted projective plane with one trivial weight, ${\mathbb P}(1,m,n)$, by determining the genus of curves of Fermat type. These are curves defined by a ``homogeneous'' polynomial analagous to the one from Fermat's last theorem. We begin by finding local coordinates for the standard affine cover of the plane, and then prove that the curve is smooth. This is done by pulling the curve up to the surface's desingularization. Then a map from the curve to ${\mathbb P^1}$ is constructed, and it's ramification divisor is determined. We conclude by applying Hurwitz's theorem to this map to obtain $C$'s genus.

Abstract:We introduce a new approach to the geometric Bombieri--Lang conjecture for hyperbolic varieties in characteristic 0. The main idea is to construct an entire curve on a special fiber of a variety over a complex function field from an infinite sequence of rational points of the variety. The construction relies on the classical Brody lemma in complex geometry and is conditional on a non-degeneracy conjecture of partial heights. In particular, we prove the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture for hyperbolic projective varieties which have finite morphisms to abelian varieties over function fields of characteristic 0.
